Let’s see owned baseball on September 22, 2019
Earning Full WOBs:
John Means threw 7 strong innings, allowing 1 run as the Orioles edged the Mariners, 2-1.
Seth Mejias-Brean reached base 4 times and ended the 6-4 game in the 10th with a 2 run walk off homer giving San Diego the win over Arizona.
Hyun-Jin Ryu did not walk a batter and struck out 8 Rockies and launched a home run of his own to earn the 7-4 victory for the Dodgers.
George Springer launched 3 homers to power the Astros to a 13-5 thrashing of the Angels and an AL West clincher.
Earning 1/2 WOBs:
Yu Darvish pitched into the 9th inning, striking out 12 Cardinals in 8 1/3 innings. But St. Louis rallied and he absorbed the brutal 3-2 decision for the Cubs.
Marco Gonzales struck out 4 Orioles in 7 innings, allowing 3 hits and 2 runs, but the Mariners came up short, 2-1.
Sam Hilliard went3 for 4 with a homer but the Rockies fell to the Dodgers, 7-4.
Billy McKinney homered twice in the Blue Jays 8-3 loss to the Yankees.

Who Owns October (#WOO) Tallies Updated For October 14, 2018

Well look at what we’ve got here! An ALCS!
The Brewers lost yesterday and the Astros lost today, so nobody is going to have a perfect October, thanks to a funky 2 out wall ball by Jackie Bradley Jr.
Now let’s see if the Red Sox can avoid walking batters when the series heads to Houston.
So who owned October?
Each winning team for every post season game gets a pitcher and a hitter who earn a full WOO (Who Owns October.)
And at my discretion, I award a 1/2 WOO’S to a worthy player on the losing team.
At the end of the post season, we will see who had the highest WOO total as a pitcher and a hitter.

ALCS Game 2:
Receiving 1 WOO
Matt Barnes threw 1 1/3 shutout hitless innings to hold the Houston attack at bay and earn the 7-5 decision for Boston.
Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a dramatic 2 out, 3 run double to put the Red Sox up for good in their 7-5 win over Houston.
Receiving 1/2 WOO
George Springer doubled twice, driving in 2 and scoring another but the Astros fell short in Boston, 7-5.

Brock Holt hit for the cycle and wasn’t even the star of their game! Nathan Eovaldi became the ace of the post season and it is safe to say the Red Sox not only owned October but owned the Yankees.
Meanwhile the Astros and Dodgers advanced with final scores that were more lopsided than the games indicated.
So who owned October?
Each winning team for every post season game gets a pitcher and a hitter who earn a full WOO (Who Owns October.)
And at my discretion, I award a 1/2 WOO’S to a worthy player on the losing team.
At the end of the post season, we will see who had the highest WOO total as a pitcher and a hitter.

From October 7
National League Division Series Game 4
American League Division Series Game 3:
Receiving 1 WOO
Pedro Baez threw 1 1/3 key shutout innings, preventing the Braves from rallying and preserved the lead for the Dodgers as they clinched the Division Series in a 6-2 Game 4.
Nathan Eovaldi dominated the Yankees over 7 innings, allowing 5 hits and 1 garbage time run, to earn the easy 16-1 decision for the Red Sox.
Brock Holt hit the first ever post season cycle, homering in the 9th of Boston’s 16-1 humiliation of the Yankees.
Manny Machado went 2 for 5, homered and drove in 4, as the Dodgers came from behind to top Atlanta 6-2 and advance to the NLCS.
Collin McHugh threw 2 no hit shutout innings, striking out 4 Indians and walking none to earn the 11-3 victory for Houston.
George Springer got 3 hits and 2 homers to lead the Astros in a late charge to eliminate the Indians with an 11-3 final.
Receiving 1/2 WOO
Mike Clevinger struck out 9 Astros over 5 innings, holding the champs to a single run. But the Indians bullpen and defense betrayed him in the 11-3 elimination loss.
Francisco Lindor hit a go ahead homer and added another hit. But the Indians could not hold off the champion Astros, 11-3.
Kurt Suzuki hit a 2 run pinch hit single that briefly gave the Braves the lead. They could not hold the Dodgers, who rallied for a 6-2 win.

Travis Shaw got 3 hits, including a homer and drew a bases loaded walk off walk to spark the Brewers past the Mets, 4-3.
Joe Musgrove tossed 7 shutout innings, striking out 7 Cardinals to earn the 8-1 decision for the Pirates.
George Springer went 3 for 6 with a back breaking 3 run homer as the Astros clobbered Cleveland’s bullpen in a closer than it looked 11-2 final.
James Paxton struck out 11 Twins over 7 innings, giving up 3 hits and 1 run as the Mariners won the 2-1 contest.

Fernando Romero threw 6 shutout innings, striking out 9 as the Twins blanked the Cardinals, 6-0.
Zach Eflin pitched into the 7th, throwing 6 2/3 shutout innings, 4 hits and struck out 9 Giants in the Phillies 11-0 blanking.

Bryce Harper reached base 3 times and hit a highlight reel broken bat home run to help the Nationals stun the Mets, 8-6.
Didi Gregorius homered twice and walked as the Yankees demolished the Marlins, 12-1.
Hyun-Jin Ryu struck out 9 Padres and walked none over 6 innings, allowing 3 hits as the Dodgers won easily, 10-3.
Daniel Mengden threw 8 strong innings, allowing 6 hits and 1 run, striking out 6 White Sox and earned the 8-1 decision for Oakland.

Springer, Verlander, Morton and Kershaw owned the World Series

It may seem strange, seeing Clayton Kershaw on this list. But as it turned out, despite his disastrous Game 5, Clayton Kershaw was tied with the highest WOWS total for a pitcher in the 2017 World Series.
Sure George Springer makes sense. He hit 5 homers and took the World Series MVP trophy. Yeah Charlie Morton makes sense. He was dominant as a starter in Game 4 and pitched 4 brilliant innings out of the bullpen to clinch Game 7. And Justin Verlander pitched well enough to win both Games 2 and 6.
But Morton’s WOWs total was 1 1/2 because of the bullpen meltdown in Game 4. And Verlander took the hard luck loss in Game 6, which also made his WOWs total 1 1/2.
And Kershaw was brilliant in Game 1 and pitched 4 shutout innings in relief in Game 7, earning him a 1 1/2 total.
So while Kershaw continues to lick his wounds and listen to how he is a post season failure, in at least one metric, he was a solid contributor.
This October, Kershaw was 3-0 with a 3.82 ERA. That includes the homers he let up in his victory over the Diamondbacks and his 4th and 5th inning meltdowns in Game 5 of the World Series.
Remember he threw 7 innings, allowing 3 hits, 1 run, no walks and 11 strikeouts in Game 1, seemingly putting his post season woes to rest.
They will stick around another year, but maybe he had a better October than his Game 5 would let on.

I will NOT change it to Who Owns November. October is a state of mind, even if the post season begins in September (as it did in 2014) or ends in November (as it did tonight.)
The Astros are the World Champions… that’s a sentence I think a lot of Houston fans thought they would never be able to say.
Charlie Morton became the unlikely hero to throw the final pitch of the World Series. But he was no “One batter and done” like Mike Montgomery’s surprise save for the Cubs in last year’s World Series. He went long to earn the title.
Meanwhile George Springer matched Reggie Jackson and Chase Utley’s single Series record with 5 homers. The game was a dud but don’t blame the Astros (or Clayton Kershaw for that matter.)
So who owned October and the World Series?

2017 World Series Game 7:
Receiving 1/2 WOO and 1/2 WOWS
Charlie Morton came out of the bullpen to throw 4 solid innings, striking out 4 Dodgers, allowing 2 hits and 1 run. He threw the pitch that ended the 5-1 game for the Astros that clinched the World Series.
George Springer led off the game with a double and scored. He would add his record tying 5th homer of the World Series to seal his MVP as the Astros topped the Dodgers 5-1 to win it all.
Receiving 1/2 WOO and 1/2 WOWS
Clayton Kershaw threw 4 dominant shutout innings, allowing 2 hits while striking out 4 Astros. The Dodgers would fall 5-1.
Joc Pederson singled and scored the only Dodger run as they fell to the Astros, 5-1.

Actually, YES! When Verlander looked damn near unhittable through 5 innings, it looked like it might end with a 1-0 final following up a 13-12 slugfest.
Ah, such is baseball. Rich Hill might not be happy they pulled him early again! But a 7th game is up for grabs for anyone and if they win, the champagne will taste just as good for Mr. Hill

2017 World Series Game 6:
Receiving 1/2 WOO and 1/2 WOWS
Kenley Jansen rebounded from several poor outings to give the Dodgers 6 critical outs, allowing no baserunners and striking out 3 Astros to save the 3-1 final.
Chris Taylor finally solved Verlander’s dominance with a game tying double that set up the go ahead rally as the Dodgers topped the Astros, 3-1.
Receiving 1/2 WOO and 1/2 WOWS
George Springer reached base 3 times, including a homer that briefly gave the Astros the lead but the rest of the lineup was cold in the 3-1 loss to the Dodgers.
Justin Verlander dominated the Dodgers for the first 5 innings before allowing 2 in the 6th. They were enough to take the hard luck 3-1 loss for the Astros.

Um… what the heck just happened? Is the game still going on? Are any pitchers left? (I actually feel badly for Francisco Liriano who STILL hasn’t gotten into a game at this point!)
Too many hitters considered for owning October and the World Series! Almost NO pitcher is worthy of it.
There have been 2 wild out of our mind extra inning games this October. If ANY World Series deserves to go into November, it is THIS one!!!
So who owned October and the World Series?
Each winning team for every post season game gets a pitcher and a hitter who earn a full WOO(Who Owns October.)
And at my discretion, I award a 1/2 WOO’S to a worthy player on the losing team.
But the World Series deserves its own stats. WOWS (Who Owns the World Series.)
At the end of the post season, we will see who had the highest WOO total as a pitcher and a hitter. The WOWS total will be kept separately. Each game now counts towards both tallies.

2017 World Series Game 5:
Receiving 1/2 WOO and 1/2 WOWS
Joe Musgrove was practically the only pitcher who did his job. He threw one scoreless inning and earned the 13-12 decision for the Astros over the Dodgers.
George Springer shone in a game with many offensive stars. He reached base 5 times, hitting a game tying homer, scoring 3 runs and reaching base in the winning 10th inning rally to lead the Astros to a hair raising 13-12 victory against the Dodgers.
Receiving 1/2 WOO and 1/2 WOWS
Cody Bellinger reached base 3 times, including a triple and a homer, driving in 4, but somehow that wasn’t enough in the Dodgers heart breaking 13-12 loss to the Astros.

Well, THAT game was bananas.
The Dodger bullpen was untouchable against Chicago. And look at this! They allowed a a run in the 8th, 9th, 2 in the 10th and 2 in the 11th.
Meanwhile the Dodgers kept tying it, Charlie Culberson thought his homer knotted it up and a pick off attempt that hit an umpire may have turned the tide of the World Series.
Like I said… bananas.

George Springer reached base 4 times including a double and a go ahead 2 run homer in the 11th that put Houston up for good in the wild 7-6 game against Los Angeles.
Justin Verlander allowed 2 hits and struck out 5 over 6 strong innings. He did not factor in the decision but helped set up the Astros 7-6 win in 11 innings over the Dodgers.
Receiving 1/2 WOO and 1/2 WOWS
Corey Seager hit a 2 run homer that briefly gave the Dodgers the lead. They would drop the game in 11 to Houston, 7-6.

Bold Predictions For The MLB In 2017
Every year we do an article called “Bold Predictions”. I love this concept as most of these ideas are so preposterous that none of them will actually happen. I liken it to the “Riverboat Gambler Theory” where you can really get rich quick if it were to come to fruition.
There may not be too many secrets in the National League where the clubs seems to be either really good or really bad. The American League has a lot more parity.
I suppose I could start off by saying that the NL would win the Interleague series versus the AL, but that it is probably not going to happen based on a 13 year losing streak.
Giancarlo Stanton will crack 50+ HRs
Jose Bautista will not be signed until after the June 2017 draft.

Projected Top 5 Home Run Hitters In Major League Baseball For 2017
Having nothing to do with the ALL – Star Game, and a ton to prove after inviting himself to the HR derby in San Diego, we placed a $125 bet on Stanton to win the event at +325 odds – and he won the whole thing. Now only if he could refrain from beingthe DL for 1 campaign. It was another injury plagued season for the veteran in 2016, but I still claim he will lead the league in HRs one of these years and possibly challenge 50 HRs in the process. He is our #1 pick to win the overall MLB HR crown in 2017.
With apologies to the pending Free Agents who cracked 40+ HRs in Mark Trumbo (47) and Chris Carter (41), I just don’t see them duplicating their 2016 campaigns.
I also foresee a bunch of changes to the top 6 Home Run hitters in the American League in 2017.
Newly signed Indians player Edwin Encarnacion is quite possibly the only returning top 5 guy that will be in there back to back seasons for the Junior Circuit.
Chris Carter. actually tied was the co-leader for the HR title with Nolan Arenado in 2016. and then was promptly non-tendered by the Brewers for his efforts.
Mark Trumbo hasn’t been able to parlay his HR title into a Free Agent deal either. I think this may play a huge factor in a 2017 regression of sorts.
Don’t get me wrong. i fully expect these gentlemen to eclipse 30+ HRs each still in 2017.
Since the top 5 overall Major League HR totals all resided in the AL in 2016 – I suspect this won’t be the case next year.
Ultimately, career years from Khris Davis and Brian Dozier will be hard to do again.

6 MLB Teams That Will Benefit The Most By The New CBA
The Toronto Blue Jays have had to contend with the overspending in the last 25 years by the Yankees and Red Sox. With stiffer penalties now imposed on the higher payroll clubs. coupled with their recent back to back ALCS Appearances, the franchise draws enough to spend more money on total team salary in the next few years. It will come down to the management’s ability on player personnel that should determine their success for the next 5 years and not sheer finances.

Tomorrow we will point out the clubs that were hurt most in the short term. today we talk about the winners of the new deal.
I am calling the Nationals, Mariners, Astros, Jays, Cardinals and Giants the immediate victors under the new format.
When i was thinking about more the past two days, the new structure seems to favor mid level payroll teams more than the lower or higher payroll clubs.
With the new penalties for spending way more money than the Luxury Tax Threshold, the Yankees, Dodgers, Red Sox and Tigers are going to find that the impact will run pretty steep on their roster decisions for the next 5 years.
Being that that all of those franchises are still going to dole out the kind of money on player contracts they are, I am not calling them losers for the new CBA either. Read the rest of this entry
Seattle Mariners Showing A Riverboat Gambler Mentality With The Segura Deal: Why Not Covet Chris Carter Next?
The Seattle Mariners at a massive fork in the road for their franchise. The bulk of the roster is right at the peak of their careers, and with the A’s and Angels rebuilding. -and perhaps the Rangers taking a step back, GM Jerry DiPoto trading a young SP with a ton of potential in Taijuan Walker, in order to secure the biggest weakness the club suffered down the stretch in the 2016 season. In landing Jean Segura, the brass is hoping they have found the Leadoff man/Shortstop that will hep the break the longest MLB Playoff Drought currently.

i love the Jean Segura trade for the Martiners. In a deal announced over Thanksgiving, the M’s picked up the 2016 All – Star 2B/SS, along with Mitch Haniger and Zac Curtis for a return of Ketel Marte and Taijuan Walker.
The real meat of this trade boils down to Segura vs Walker.
I definitely think the SS position was a sore spot for Seattle down the stretch in 2016 – with Marte slumping after a hot start to begin the campaign.
Yes pitching is at a premium in the market place right now, however Walker, now 24, hasn’t delivered to the hype he came into the MLB with – and Seattle had him pegged as the #3 Starter on the Depth Chart, despite Ariel Miranda outperforming him last season.
Segura led the NL with hits in 2016 (203) – and featured a career best .319/.368/.499 – with an astounding 71 XBH (20 HRs, 7 = 3B and 41 Doubles.) This helped the 26 Year Old tally 102 Runs Scored, while swiping 33 Bases.

Wade Miley was one out from throwing a complete game shutout. He settled for 8 2/3 innings, allowing 1 run and striking out 11 Diamondbacks, giving the Orioles a critical 6-1 victory.
Clayton Kershaw threw 7 innings of 3 hit shutout ball as the Dodgers clobbered the Rockies, 14-1 and put them on the brink of a division title.
Jose Bautista supplied all the offense with a 3 run homer that pushed Toronto past the Yankees, 3-0.
Josh Reddick reached base 4 times, including a back breaking grand slam, as the Dodgers crushed the Rockies 14-1.

Daily Fantasy MLB DFS Picks For DraftKings 8/27/16
P- Jameson Taillon (vs. Milwaukee Brewers): $9,900. Taillon has been incredibly consistent all year long. He is coming off one of his best performances on the mound this year after throwing eight innings of two run ball against the Houston Astros. His last eight outings have been quality starts. In two starts against the Brewers this season, Taillon has thrown 12 innings while giving up only three runs.
P- Marcus Stroman (vs. Minnesota Twins): $9,100. Stroman struggled mightily throughout the first half of the season, but he has done quite well recently. Over his last six starts, he own a 2.45 ERA and 47 strikeouts over 40.1 innings pitched. He has been racking up the strikeouts over his last few starts, which is obviously great for daily fantasy. Minnesota’s offense has been absolutely terrible over the last few weeks, so this should be great for Stroman.

Daily Fantasy MLB DFS Picks For DraftKings 8/22/16
P- Jon Lester (vs. San Diego Padres): $12,500. Just to warn you, Monday could be a brutal day for pitching match-ups. Some of the top tier starters who find themselves on the bump have been struggling recently (Strasburg and Carrasco specifically). Lester has been very consistent this season though and he is facing a pretty mediocre offense. Over his last three starts, he has a 2-0 record, 2.29 ERA, and 21 strikeouts in 19.2 innings pitched. Over the last seven days, San Diego has the worst OPS in baseball.
P- Zack Godley (vs. Atlanta Braves): $5,500. Like I said, the pitching match-ups are brutal, so I’ve decided to start a pitcher just based off of his opposing team. The Braves offense has been brutal all year long and they have been exceptionally bad over the last seven days with a .236/.305/.380 slash line. Godley hasn’t been spectacular this year, but he is coming off a very good start his last time out against the Mets. He went 7.1 innings, giving up two runs on five hits. This cheap play really opens up the rest of the offensive picks.

Daily Fantasy MLB DFS Picks For DraftKings 8/21/16
P- Jose Quintana (vs. Oakland A’s): $9,900. Unfortunately for Quintana, his team doesn’t give him much run support, which doesn’t lead to a lot of wins. Of course that isn’t great for DraftKings scoring, but he has still been dominant on the mound. He has made six straight quality starts, which is obviously a great sign for Sunday. In 68 career at bats against Quintana, the A’s lineup is batting .162, with 21 strikeouts, and a .239 OBP.
P- Julio Urias (vs. Cincinnati Reds): $5,600. This is a high risk, high reward pick for Saturday. If you are looking for a safer pick, take a look at someone like Ervin Santana (more expensive option) or Matt Garza (cheaper option). Cincinnati’s offense has struggled against left-handed pitching this year (ranked 26th in OPS, 26th in slugging, 30th in OBP, and 28th in batting average). Their offense has also struggled over the last seven days. If Urias can put up six or seven innings of work, his strikeout potential could make for a huge game in daily fantasy.

Daily Fantasy MLB DFS Picks For DraftKings 8/4/16
P- Matt Moore (vs. Philadelphia Phillies): $8,400. Thursday is an absolutely brutal day for potential starting pitcher choices in daily fantasy. I decided to go with Matt Moore as he makes his debut for the San Francisco Giants. Over his last three starts with the Rays, he has a 2-1 record, 2.14 ERA, and 12 strikeouts. Over the last seven games, the Phillies have a .694 OPS, which is ranked 20th in baseball. They also rank 28th in OPS against left-handed pitchers this season, which is a great sign for Moore. If Moore can limit his walks, he could go very deep into this game.
P- Nathan Eovaldi (vs. New York Mets): $7,300. Eovaldi had a terrible June, but he has been very sharp recently. Over his last six appearances, he has only allowed six runs. The New York Mets’ offense has been very lackluster this year, so hopefully Eovaldi shows more success. I would typically go with a more “for sure” option, but the pitching slate is very slim on Thursday.

P- Cole Hamels (vs. Baltimore Orioles): $11,100. Hamels is red hot and the Orioles’ bats are ice cold, seems like a good combination. Over the last seven games, Baltimore is batting .203, with a .272 OBP, and a .332 slugging percentage. Meanwhile, over Hamels’ last three starts he has a 0.84 ERA and a 3-0 record. He has lasted eight innings in two of his last three starts. He has also been absolutely dominant on the road this year, going 8-1 with a 1.71 ERA.
P- Jake Odorizzi (vs. Kansas City Royals): $9,100. Just when you thought Baltimore was ice cold, Kansas City is even worse. Over their last seven games, the Royals are batting .202, with a .255 OBP, and a .304 slugging percentage. Odorizzi has not allowed a run over his last 14.2 innings pitched, so clearly he is throwing the ball well.

P- Brandon Finnegan (vs. San Diego Padres): This month has been great for Finnegan. He is 2-1, with a 2.96 ERA, and he has gone six innings while giving up fewer than two runs in three of the last four starts. On the season, he is 3-5, with a 3.81 ERA,with 59 strikeouts.
