MLB Interleague Master Schedule In 2017: AL Looking To Speedbag The NL For A 14th Straight Year

AL vs NL

We go over this every season, but I am shocked to not see that much coverage on the issue.  The American League has absolutely thrashed on the National League in Interleague for the last 13 years.

Don’t tell me this is an anomaly.  This is a massive trend.  Plus no, the answer is not to eliminate MLB Interleague to level out the playing field.

I am already not going to watch the ALL – Star Game this year because it doesn’t mean anything.  Yes. I may be in the minority of the game actually being worth something in the MidSmmer Classic.  For those keep scoring at home, the League that actually won the All Star Game incredibly played 3 less games than the loser thanks to MLB’s brilliant (insert sarcasm here) 2 – 3 – 2 format.

But I guess no one else remember’s guys high fiving each other in the dugout once they were lifted in the ALL – Star Game, so they could catch a plane.  I will watch the HR Derby, and that is it.  I digress. Read the rest of this entry

Once Again: Why The MLB Should Consider A Geographical/Market Size Re-Alignment For The Next CBA:

baseball-map-framed-with-plaque

The new CBA has been a godsend for the mid – market teams, and not so great for the 10 top markets, but even more devastating for the 10 lowest markets.  One thing the CBA did address was to give the players an additional 4 days off during the league year – stretching from 183 Days to 187 – in lieu of expanding the rosters of 25 to 26.

This website has continued its stance since day 1, that while the economics have been a lot more fair to teams in the last 15 years, there is still much work to do.  The best small market teams we have seen in the last 7 years have been the Oakland A’s, Tampa Bay Rays, Pittsburgh Pirates and of course the 2015 World Series winning Kansas City Royals.  Only one of these teams actually were a decent franchise for some time before they took off.

Pittsburgh lost for 22 years before they finally made 3 straight postseason appearances.  With the new CBA not giving them 1st RD Draft Picks for departing players in future seasons like Andrew McCutchen, Gregory Polanco, Starling Marter and Gerrit Cole, this is a sure fire way for the brass to cut the cord on their service team a lot of time ahead of them hitting Free Agency.

Kansas City was a laughable organization from the mid 90’s to 2013 as well, and despite winning back to back pennants in the AL< and being the first small market team to win the World Series since the 2003 Marlins, they will soon start to see their team ripped apart under the same Free Agent terms like the Bucs – with Eric Hosmer, Lorenzo Cain, Danny Duffy and Mike Moustakas likely all not re-signing with the franchise.  Dayton Moore already had to trade ace Closer Wade Davis this past week.

The Tampa Bay Rays were awful from 1998 – 2007, and were able to stockpile #1 overall picks to build up the franchise.  The Joe Maddon era ensued for 6 straight quality years where they competed beautifully, including a World Series Loss in 2008, but now they are at a crossroads again from a 68 win campaign. and teams all spending double what they can. How Many Years Will It Take Of The AL Clubbing The NL In Interleague (On A 12 Year Win Streak) Before Things Change?

AL vs NL

Hunter Stokes (Chief Writer/Part Owner)

Follow The MLB Reports On Twitter

With a modest 4 – 3 lead in the season series heading into yesterday’s action. the National League was in foreign territory by leading the Interleague yearly contest.  You see that have not won a yearly series vs the AL since 2003.  Houston tied the current campaign series at 4 with a 6 – 4 win Satuday.

The Junior Circuit has won the last 12 years of play, and own a decisive .552 win percentage since 2004 (when the 1st 8 years were split 4 – 4 in the seasons, with the NL holding a 30 games wins lead) in that time frame.

I am a bigger fan of the American League game over the National League, yet I am torn because if these splits continue for more seasons, we will never have more Interleague ever. We may stay the same – or god forbid, eliminate Interleague altogether if expansion leads to 32 clubs (16 in each league) and negating an odd amount of teams per league, not necessarily needing to play it anymore.

Right now there are 20 games for each club against the other League. It boils down to just one division playing another division, and then in most cases, a natural geographical rivalry.

Determining how many games there ought to really be, I turn to the “Team Fatigue card” a lot of my fellow westerners have expressed in so much out this way over the years.

I am close enough to see both NL and AL parks play, but there are several cities that are without a league park of the other for hundreds of miles (like Seattle, Arizona, Colorado, Minneapolis), then KC and St. Louis to a lesser extent, but far away enough to classify a full road trip should you partake in a journey to see.

You can add Texas and Houston, with Tampa and Miami in that mix as well. Read the rest of this entry

MLB 162 Game Format Should Be Changed To 154 Games: More Interleague + Less Division Games

For 80 years of their existence, the MLB played a 154 Game Schedule. By going back to this number of games it would ensure that no World Series may be played in November, and would give the league an alternative or two in changing the playoff format if need be. You could also revert the record book back to a 154 Games - and have Babe Ruth being the single season leader all time for HRs at 60. You can effectively rub out the steroid era.

TV Contracts aside, this will never happen.  But baseball should really grandfather in the schedule to be peeled back to 154 Games from the end of the contract of the last year on a deal with a network right now.

So why go to 154 Games?

Gone are the days when clubs sell out every single game.  Fenway Park and Citizens Bank Park both went through huge consecutive sellout steaks in recent vintage.  But recently there are not any clubs that sellout every game for a given year.

Each MLB club could easily withdraw 4 home dates on the calendar each.  I am of the opinion that most teams would not suffer many losses at the gate either. Read the rest of this entry

David Oritz Is Retiring After 2016: It Is A Perfect Time To Eliminate The DH!

David Ortiz has been the quintessential DH in the AL over the last 15 years. Boston is in contention perennially because he put up great #s compared to his competition. Realistically, only he and a few other players are even at the All-Star level, and if given the choice if there were no DH slot in the game, I guarantee you their teams would brave their physical defiencies - in order to keep their bat in the lineup. The AL has had the Designated Hitter Position since the start of the 1973 season.

David Ortiz has announced he is retiring after the next season.  Thus ends the greatest Left Handed DH of ALL-Time, (sorry Harold Baines).

The Designated Hitter Position has been taking a hit for effectiveness more and more over the last several years, and more teams than not use it as a rest for veterans.

Listed on MLB.com, only 5 DH’s qualified for the Batting Title race in 2015.

Billy Butler had a crappy year.

David Ortiz started slowly being hampered by the new foot in the box rule, before settling in to a 37 HRs and 108 RBI campaign – with a .913 OPS. Read the rest of this entry

Interleague 2015 Master Schedule (300 Games) All Times Posted So Far

mlb_mini_pennants_21582big

The National League will be looking to shake an 11 year game losing streak to the American League in 2015.

Among the new things that AL vs NL has to offer, is a return to all teams in action at some point in the season during the time.

Of course the Astros were back in the Senior Circuit then, so there was 16 teams vs just 14 for the Junior Circuit.

Mark it on your calendars – from Monday June 15 – June 18 all 30 teams will take part in a 2 game home and away series versus the same club.  This is sure to be a treat for Interleague fans.

Citizens Bank Ball Park, PNC Park and Fenway Park are the only 3 stadiums to have their venues host AL vs NL as their home openers.

The MLB Reports will try to update the game times as they come in until the start of next campaign.  Read the rest of this entry

At last, we have the majority of all 30 MLB teams scheduled start times.  The Padres, Indians, White Sox and Astros were the last 4 clubs to join the party.  Yes, I will continue to call franchises out on this aspect.. It costs you people from including your park as part of their road trips when they are trying to finagle the landscape of a trip itinerary for time, and you have yet to put them up before other squads.

Having said that, I have no complaints in how the actual times they put forth on their year calendars.  I was stoked about a month ago, as it looked like I had a perfect storm brewing for a World Record Chase for either my own record (ALL 30 MLB Parks, every pitch of every game, in just 23 days).

What happened after that is the Canadian dollar went from hovering 90 cents versus the American Dollar, all the way to just over 80 cents.  The costs were mounting astronomically for an odyssey that requires special kinds of transportation to break the damn thing.

Secondly, I had horrible news (schedule wise) from the Cubs/Brewers, Rays/Marlins, and Giants/A’s all hosting games in their towns in respective areas, only to not have one scheduled available Doubleheader for all of the ballpark chasers to attend every pitch.  I was frustrated at all concerned, and packed in the thought of trying for either. world record journey in 2015. The game of baseball is in decline right? Loved hearing that yet once again from every non-baseball fan.  I tend not to disagree, but to think that no changes going forward is the right call is entirely wrong.

With Bud Selig making his grand exit in 2 months, Rob Manfred has a daunting task of capturing the new age fan, while the core audience grows a little older next year.

Here at the Report we have suggested some radical thought-provoking topics towards how baseball can improve, so I thought I would put them all in one article.

This list coming forth is a compilation of our top personalities – and their stances towards how the game can improve.

In this blog, I am using a lot of (Paul Francis Sullivan) Sully’s ideas.  He is our lead personality on this site, and has the pulse of all sorts of historical and new age references that make sense.

Of course the Astros were back in the Senior Circuit then, so there was 16 teams vs just 14 for the Junior Circuit.

The American League won the season series from the National League for the 11th straight year Thursday night.

By virtue of the Orioles sweeping the Reds in a 3 game Interleague series, it netted the AL a 151 – 128 lead on the campaign, and guarantees the Junior Circuit of a winning year on a 300 game series.

The last time the NL won the season series was in 2003.

This is bad news for those fans looking for an alternative of “home field advantage” in the World Series based on AL vs NL for a year by year basis.  Once again, that honor should go to the team with the best record – and not the winners of the “Midsummer Classic”.

For a brief period in 2014, the NL held a 26 – 17 advantage in May, however have gone 102 – 134 since that day.

The AL’s dominance is also showing up in the runs scored department, with them featuring a Run Differential of +93 (1212 – 1119).

This weekend’s 3 game set of games between the Giants and Tigers is a 2012 World Series rematch, and may just seal the fate for the two teams, as both are fighting for playoff berths. Read the rest of this entry

The Biggest Stretch Of Interleague Has Arrived In the 2014 MLB Season

Here we go….Starting tonight, there is a season 7 games for Interleague in the next two days, and are several more game lists on the docket for the next 15 days (46 Games in all)..

Highlighted by tonight’s LA Series, the Battle of Ohio, the 2013 World Series, and MLB Trade Deadline dance partners BOS @ STL.

Yes, there also duds on the itinerary, as I am sure there are not too many people pining for a Astros @ Phillies series, or a Padres @ Twins, or even the Royals in the desert to take on the D’Backs,

The one other set of games to pique one’s interest is the Braves stumbling into Safeco Field on a 6 game losing streak – and having the daunting task to face Felix Hernandez this evening.

Good luck fella’s, a high strikeout team, facing the best AL Pitcher, (which is a rarity), and in one of the worst hitting ballparks with Seattle. This could be an ugly night.

The fans could not need air conditioning with the amount of wind generated by bats missing balls. Read the rest of this entry

The American League holds a decisive ALL – Time Record on the National League in Interleague play – and perhaps that is why a lot of traditional fans hate the concept even more.

Heading into play in 2014, the AL has won the last decade straight of seasonal play (10 years), and now possess an overall yearly record of 13 – 4 over the Senior Circuit.

It wasn’t always this dominant for the Junior Circuit. 4 of the 1st 7 campaigns were taken by the NL, however ever since the start of 2004, the American League has routinely speedbagged their opposition league.
