Notable HRs On Friday May 30th: Donaldson, Mesoraco, Bautista, Willingham, Seager + Stanton

Josh Donaldson continued his assault on AL pitching with his 2nd Multi HR effort of the year. 

By virtue of him collecting his 15th HR, he ties idle Jose Abreu for 3rd place in the AL HR race.

Jose Bautista not only hit a jack for the 2nd straight game, but he kept himself tied for 5th with  Albert Pujols in the AL by doing so.

Josh Willingham is finally healthy for the Twins – and he has big flies in 2 straight contests.

Kyle Seager of the Mariners put forth his 2nd HR in as many games for Seattle.  Read the rest of this entry

Yankees Hanging In the AL East + Wild Card Race

The New York Yankees have managed to stay afloat among injuries, old age and lackluster play at home so far.  A lot of it can be attributed to Mashahiro Tanaka, the Bullpen as a whole, timely hits from bench players, a few streaks by Teixeira, and for unheralded players like Yangervis Solarte and Dellin Betances.  The Bronx Bombers will have a tough time competing without the likes of Sabathia, Nova and Pineda for the next stretch, and will not see Nova for the whole year.

The Yankees spent $503 MIL on player salaries in the offseason, and half of the roster is comprised of different guys from last year.

It was a team that also splashed the biggest International signing plus posting fee with their 7 YRs/$175 MIL pact with acquiring Masahiro Tanaka.

Going into the second game of a 7 game homestand versus the Twins (3), a makeup game vs Mariners on Monday, then concluding with a 3 game set against Oakland., the Bronx Bombers are 28 – 25, and 2.5 Games Behind AL East leading Toronto.

While it is too early for the standings really, if the playoffs were to start today, the Yankees would be playing against the Angels in the Wild Card playoff spot.

Fresh from a 5 – 4 road trip through Chicago (both teams) and St. Louis, the team did well to salvage the trip after dropping the 1st two contests to begin with.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (May.30) – Updated MLB Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

Madison Bumgarner threw 7 three hit shutout innings, striking out 10 while only walking 1 Cardinal batter, leading the Giants to a 9-4 win.

Devin Mesoraco hit a second inning grand slam and later added a solo shot, providing most of the spark for Cincinnati’s 6-4 victory in Arizona.

Corey Kluber pitched into the 8th inning, finishing with 5 hits over 7 1/3, striking out 12 and walking 1 as the Indians topped Colorado, 5-2.

Josh Donaldson had another amazing day at the plate. He got on four times, including a pair of homers and 4 RBI as Oakland topped the Angels, 9-4

Notable HRs On May 29th: EE Makes History!

Edwin Encarnacion hit his 16th HR of the month last night, as part of his 5th Multi HR effort since May 8th.

EE is has been on fire for the last 20 games, and has effectively tied Mickey Mantle for the most HRs ever hit in May.

For his part, Encarnacion jumped to just 1 back of Nelson Cruz for the MLB and AL Lead.

Jose Bautista also did yard work for the 13th time in his season.  Along with EE, Joey Bats helped stake the Jays to a lead. 

The OF even through out Billy Butler on a single to right at 1st base.  Unfortunately the Toronto club lost the game on an error, and said adios to their 9 game win streak.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (May.29) – Updated MLB Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

Josh Collmenter faced the minimum 27 batters in his brilliant 3 hit no walk complete game shutout against the Reds, earning the 4-0 win in Arizona.

Michael Morse homered and drove in the go ahead runs with an 8th inning double as the Giants came from behind to beat the Cardinals, 6-5.

Brad Peacock threw 6 solid innings, striking out 8, walking no Orioles and allowing just one run. He did not get the win but he kept Houston in the game long enough to top Baltimore 3-1 and extend their winning streak to 6 games.

Erick Aybar went 3-5 with a homer, a stolen base and 3 RBI, leading the Angels to a 7-5 win in Seattle.

They owned baseball on May.29, 2014.

Nelson Cruz hit 2 HRs to increase his MLB and AL lead to 19 for the year.  He also put forth his 2nd Multi HR game, and 5th different consecutive HR streak of the year. 

Cruz is on pace for 60 HRs as of now, the Orioles OF has also increased his RBI lead in the AL to 48. 

He also leads the AL in SLG% (.663) OPS (1.039) and TB (128)

George Springer hit his 6th HR in as many games, and narrowly missed having a 6 game HR streak by not clubbing a Tater Trot the game previously. Read the rest of this entry

2014 MLB Runs Survivor: 19 Teams Complete, 11 Left

This should turn out to be quite fun.  A lot of gambling establishments have this sort of deal, and it will be fun to see the results.

What Runs Survivor is, a MLB team scoring 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9, 10 or (10+) in different games throughout the course of the season.

Once a club has one of these run totals once, you cross it off and keep going until they complete the 11 different variations.  We are going to keep tracking this category – until all 30 MLB clubs are finished this season!

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (May.28) – Updated MLB Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

Felix Hernandez came within an out of a complete game, finishing with 8 2/3 innings of 4 hit, 1 walk and 9 strikeout ball. He got the 3-1 win for the Mariners over the Angels.

Josh Donaldson made his second hit of the game count. He clocked a 3 run, bottom of the 9th, come from behind walk off homer that stunned the Tigers and made the A’s 3-1 winners.

Bartolo Colon pitched shutout ball into the 8th inning. He threw 7 1/3 innings, striking out 9 and walking just one Pirate, earning the 5-0 victory for the Mets.

Paul Goldschmidt missed the cycle by a triple, driving in 3 and scoring 2, leading the Diamondbacks in a 12-6 bombing of the Padres.

The San Fran players are using the ‘someone is always on fire’ offense.  Even Brandon Hicks is clobbering HRs out of 2B.  Depth prevails here.  4 Games up on the Dodgers.

2.  ***Oakland Athletics 31 – 20 (2) 8 – 5:  The A’s did lose 3 straight to the Blue Jays, however they had scored 76 runs in 11 Games prior, and pasted 10 on the board yesterday.

Brandon Moss is an underrated slugger, and Josh Donaldson has 4 separate game HR streaks this year.

A.J. Pollock finished a 3 hit day with a 2 out, bottom of the 9th, 2 run walk off homer to give Arizona a 7-5 win over the Padres.

Hyun-jin Ryu tried to make it back to back no hitters for the Dodgers. He took a perfect game into the 8th against the Reds before needing help from the bullpen. He would finish with 7 1/3 strong innings and a 3-2 win over the Reds.

Jonathan Schoop went 3-5 with 2 homers, leading the Orioles in a 7-6 come from behind win in Milwaukee.

Tommy Milone pitched shutout ball into the 7th inning, letting up 4 hits and helped the A’s trounce the Tigers, 10-0.

Notable HRs On May 25th, 2014

Nelson Cruz took the Overall lead in the AL by himself with his 16th HR of the season.

Edwin Encarnacion smacked his 14th HR to take over 3rd.  It was also his 12th Tater Trot in May.

George Springer is the only batter in the MLB to have a consecutive game HR streak in the MLB heading into action today.

The Astros RF belted his 4th HR during his 3 game HR streak on Sunday in a Houston 4 – 1 win over the Seattle Mariners, to split the 4 game series 2 – 2.

Justin Upton took over sole possession of 3rd place in the NL with his 13th HR yesterday.

Evan Gattis added his 2nd Multi HR Game of the year, and padded his season total to 10 for 2014.

Josh Beckett threw the first no hitter of 2014 and the first Dodger no no since 1996 as he dominated the Phillies, 6-0.

Evan Gattis homered twice, driving in 3 runs and led the Braves to a 7-0 victory against the Rockies.

Dallas Keuchel pitched a complete game victory, letting up just one unearned run, walking none, as the Astros topped the Mariners, 4-1/

Derek Jeter had a 4 hit game in the Yankees 7-1 thrashing of the White Sox.

The first no hitter of the year!

Josh Beckett tosses a no no against the Phillies and joins the Dodger legends like Valenzuela, Koufax and Bill Singer. The 6-0 blanking of the Phillies gives him his great Dodger highlight (going along with clinching the World Series for the Marlins and being a playoff MVP for the Red Sox.)

Still no San Diego Padres nor Washington Nationals no hitter yet (although the Nationals franchise have no hitters as the Expos and the city of Washington had some with the Senators.)

It is time to update my list!

MLB HRs Of Note Saturday May 24, 2014

George Springer has only clubbed 2 HRs and added 6 RBI through his 1st 19 Games Played, while hovering near ,200 - and Striking out plenty.  The Astros 11th Overall Pick in the 2011 MLB Amateur Draft had hit 37 HRs and added 45 SB in 492 Minor League AB during the 2013 campaign.  If Springer continues this emergence, it would really be the start of the Houston squads rebuild.  The RHB hit jacks in his 1st 2 AB last night at Safeco, both were completely obliterated long into the Seattle night.  this kid has phenomenal power.

Having been in attendance personally to watch George Springer light up Brandon Maurer for HRs in his 1st 2 AB, this guy is starting to be in the zone.

After a slow start, the Astros 24 YR old RF is starting to crush the baseball around the yard, with 6 HRs and 14 RBI in his last 14 Games Played.

Springer only had 2 HRs and 6 knocked in during his 1st 19 contests.

Not only did he have the only Multi HR effort yesterday in the bigs, He added his name to four fresh faces that have HRs in two straight games.

Pablo Sandoval hit a Tater Trot for his last 2 games, and has clubbed 4 HRs in his last 6 Games Played overall.

The rotund Giants 3B has a long way to go in order for his stats to resemble the back of his baseball card, but the San Francisco team had maintained in 1st place while waiting for the Panda’s emergence. Read the rest of this entry

Rougned Odor went 4-5 with 5 RBI including a pair of triples helping the hobbled Rangers blow out the Tigers, 12-2.

R. A. Dickey pitched into the 9th innings, giving the Blue Jays 8 1/3 innings of 5 hit, 1 walk, 2 run ball. He got the victory over Oakland, 5-2.

Ben Revere went 4-4, including a double, drove in a run and scored 3, leading the Phillies to a 5-3 over the Dodgers.

Stanton + Cruz Take Over NL + AL Leads For HRs: 3 Hit Multi HRs FRI – 0 HR Streaks For Sat

It is scary to only think the Giancarlo Stanton is just 25 years of age.  This man is asserting himself as the premiere HR hitter in the National League in 2014 with 14 HRs so far, The Marlins OF has also netted 47 RBI. and 114 Total Bases, both of which are NL leading.  Teams have already intentionally walked him 9 times, which is another league leading category for him.  Miami is 25 - 24 on the season, and they owe Stanton a huge amount of thanks for why.

Giancarlo Stanton (don’t call him Mike, even though everyone wants to be like him) had his 3rd Multi HR game of the year, and took over sole possession of 1st place in the NL HR Race.

Stanton’s teammate Garrett Jones also did yard two times (7th teammates of 2014 to accomplish the feat).

Even though these Marlins did this, Mark Reynolds destroyed 2 baseballs over the fence himself, to help the Brewers overcome the 4 HR barrage by the Fish.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (May.23) – Updated MLB Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

Chris Davis got on base 3 times, homered and drove in 4 runs, powering the Orioles to an 8-4 victory over Cleveland.

Felix Hernandez dominated the Astros with 8 strong innings, 5 hits, 1 run, 1 walk and 9 strikeouts as the Mariners rolled, 6-1.

Mark Reynolds homered twice and helped Milwaukee win a slugfest against Miami, 9-5.

Gavin Floyd pitched into the 7th, letting up just 2 runs in 6 2/3 innings, striking out 7 and walking none. He didn’t get the decision but helped set up Atlanta’s 3-2 topping of Colorado.

They owned baseball on May.23, 2014.

Sully Baseball Daily Podcast – May 23, 2014

These are not the best days for the Red Sox. Seven game losing streaks aren’t exactly becoming for a World Series defense.

They should not panic and neither should Red Sox fans. There is help in the farm system and the long term effect of fixing the team from within will be worth it.
