Tigers Trade Justin Upton, Get A Bag of Balls & 9th Best Prospect From Angels

Long, Grayson.jpg

To start, this isn’t a bad trade by Al Avila, but it really takes the wind out of Tigers fans already deflated sails.  Upton, by far the Tigers best player this year got off to a rough start after signing a 6-year $132MM deal last year and not sure he really ever became a fan favorite or really attached to Detroit.  J-Up was one of those Mike Illitch signings where he told Al to go out an sign him no matter what and the team paid for it with a very distressing long-term contract, with an opt-out after this year.

Regardless of the money that would have been tied up and yes, it’s great to get dollars off the books, it still feels like a solid kick to the groin when you lose your best player and seemingly get little in return.

I don’t normally have a person getting a 1/2 WOB as the featured picture of Who Owned Baseball. I think you can understand why I made an exception today as I gave out the most brutal 1/2 WOB EVER.

Mark Leiter Jr. threw 7 innings of one hit shutout ball as the Phillies blanked Miami, 8-0.

Mike Fiers allowed 1 run over 7 innings as the Astros beat the Nationals, 6-1.

Rhys Hoskins doubled, homered and walked, driving in 5, as the Phillies clobbered the Marlins, 8-0.

Eric Hosmer reached base 4 times and launched a 2 out, 9th inning come from behind walk off homer to give the Royals a 6-4 win over Colorado.

Earning 1/2 WOBs:

Rich Hill threw a no hitter. HE THREW A NO HITTER. He pitched 9 innings, allowing no hits, no runs, no walks. He only allowed a base runner via an error in the 9th. That’s it. It was a masterpiece. The problem is the Dodgers didn’t score a run. So he took the no hitter into the 10th and let up a walk off homer. He lost a game where he threw a no hitter through 9. This is the most brutal 1/2 WOB of all time in his 1-0 loss to the Pirates.

Corey Kluber pitched into the 8th, striking out 12 Red Sox and allowing 2 runs over 7 2/3 innings. But he was on the wrong end of the Indians 6-1 defeat.

Joey Votto homered and singled but the Reds could not get past the Cubs, 9-3.

Kevin Kiermaier reached base 4 times, homering twice and driving in 3 but the Rays fell short to Toronto, 7-6.

Giancarlo Stanton is having an unbelievable season playing for the Miami Marlins. Should the Red Sox try to trade for him?

HELL NO!!!

Would YOU sign an injury prone player in his late 20’s to an 11 year contract? At the cost of one of your core players?

I hope not.

That plus I call for the name to be changed for Yawkey Way and I figure out which Cardinals team should have won.

Correcting mistakes of the past on this episode of Sully Baseball.

Remembering Don Baylor as Hitting Coach of the Milwaukee Brewers

The recent passing of MLB player, coach, manager, and all-around good guy Don Baylor made me recall when he spent a couple years as hitting coach of the Milwaukee Brewers. Let’s take a trip back to the late 1980’s and look at his time with the club.

Baylor retired from baseball in 1988 after 17 years. About a year later, on September 5, 1989, he accepted a position in the Brewers front office, becoming the second African American there along with Ray Burris.  Baylor took on a wide range of duties, including scouting players on other major league clubs, working with players in the farm system, talent assessment in and out of the club, and other front office activities.
