The Cardinals may have missed the post season last year (barely) and have flown under the radar this off season. But sleep on this team at your own peril. They have a combination of veterans, young players, and a bunch of comeback candidates poised to make 2017 fun for the Red Birds.

Two little birds are perched on a bat for this episode of the Sully Baseball Daily Podcast.

Pitching Prospects– Edwin Diaz, Anderson Espinoza, Michael Fulmer, Taylor Guerrieri, Pierce Johnson, Yoan Lopez, Francis Martes, Alex Reyes, Jack Flaherty, Casey Meisner, Luis Ortiz

While I did finish the season in 2nd, my roster needed some serious improvements. I had a lot of faith in my ability to scout prospects, so I figured it was time to unload some prospects for win-now talent and trust my ability to refill my minor league system with less publicized talent. You can see all of the trades I made in the offseason and during the 2016 season in order from oldest to most recent below (all trades made prior to the season are in bold and in season is in italics):

Daily Fantasy MLB DFS Picks For DraftKings 9/4/16

P- Carlos Martinez (vs. Cincinnati Reds): $10,600. Martinez is coming off one of his best starts of the season after striking out 13 Brewers hitters on Monday. Over his last three starts, he has a 2-0 record, 1.29 ERA, and 25 strikeouts in 21 innings pitched. In 70 career at bats against Martinez, the Reds’ offense is hitting .229 with a .289 OBP and 17 strikeouts.

P- Eduardo Rodriguez (vs. Oakland A’s): $6,500. The Oakland A’s have really struggled over the past week hitting only .184, with a .260 OBP, and a .278 slugging percentage. On the other hand, Rodriguez has been very good recently. In his last three starts, he has a 3.31 ERA, and 14 strikeouts. Since being called up from Triple-A, E-Rod has given up three or less earned runs in seven of his eight starts. Sunday will be his first start against the A’s.

Daily Fantasy MLB DFS Picks For DraftKings 8/29/16

P- Carlos Martinez (vs. Milwaukee Brewers): $10,300. Carlos Martinez has been an incredibly reliable option in daily fantasy throughout the 2016 season. Over his last three starts, C-Mart has a 2-0 record, 2.14 ERA, and 16 strikeouts in 21 innings pitched. He has won both of his starts against the Brewers this season, allowing one run on nine hits in 13 innings pitched.

P- Matt Boyd (vs. Chicago White Sox): $6,700. Boyd has been really good since joining the starting rotation. He is now 5-0, with a 2.38 ERA in eight starts. Over his last three starts, he has a 2-0 record, 1.89 ERA, and 14 strikeouts in 19 innings pitched. If he can pitch like he has been recently, I don’t think the Chicago White Sox offense can touch him.

SEE THE REST OF THE ARTICLE

Daily Fantasy MLB DFS Picks For DraftKings 7/25/16

P- Carlos Martinez (vs. New York Mets): $11,400. Martinez has been very reliable in daily fantasy all year long. In fact, he hasn’t allowed more than three runs in a start since late May. He continues to pitch deep into games, which is great in DraftKings. The Mets offense has been brutal all season long and they have struggled to produce runs over the last seven games, so this should be very favorable for Martinez.

P- Jeremy Hellickson (vs. Miami Marlins): $8,300. In 139 career at bats against Hellickson, the Marlins’ lineup is only batting .216, with a .243 OBP, and a .365 slugging percentage. Hellickson should be on his A-game with the trade deadline right around the corner if he wants to be dealt to a competing team. In his last start against the Marlins, he held them to one earned run, on five hits in eight innings pitched.

SEE THE REST OF THE PICKS

Daily Fantasy MLB DFS Picks For DraftKings – 7/19/16

P – Carlos Martinez (vs. San Diego Padres): $10,200. Martinez has been on fire recently. Over his last six starts, Martinez has allowed a total of six runs, which is just insane. Over his last three starts, he owns a 2.00 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 18 innings pitched. The Padres lineup hasn’t faced CMart very much throughout his career, so this could bring about an element of surprise while he has been red hot.

P – Dallas Keuchel (vs. Oakland Athletics): $8,200. It looks like Keuchel is finally heading in the right direction after a rough start to 2016. Over his last five starts, he owns a 3-0 record, 2.78 ERA, and a 1.18 WHIP. The Astros offense has been red hot recently, so he should get the run support necessary to come out with a win on Tuesday.

Due to the amount of time dedicated to the analysis of my midseason top 100 prospect rankings analysis, which you can find on my blog, I will not be providing reasonings behind my DFS picks for the next few days. I can assure you my picks below have been chosen using the same research methods I use on a daily basis. These methods include weather, B v. P stats, recent success, splits, stacks and much more. If you have any questions or comments, I will be glad to answer via social media (@dynasty_digest).

P – Lance McCullers Jr. (vs. Oakland A’s): $9,700

P – Carlos Martinez (vs. Milwaukee Brewers): $9,300

SEE THE REST OF THE PICKS

Daily Fantasy MLB DFS Picks For DraftKings 6/29/16

P – Max Scherzer (vs. New York Mets): $13,500. Well, you can’t go wrong with this pick. First of all, the Mets offense has been TERRIBLE over the past seven days. They rank 28th in runs, last in slugging, 29th in OBP, and 15th in strikeouts. Second of all, Scherzer has dominated the Mets since joining the Nationals in 2015. In five starts against the Mets, he has a 2.00 ERA. His last start against the Mets, on May 17th, he threw 6.1 innings, giving up two runs, and he struck out 10.

P – Junior Guerra (vs. Los Angeles Dodgers): $7,400. Guerra has been pretty consistent this year. In 10 starts, he owns a 4-1 record, with a 3.67 ERA, 51 hits against, 53 strikeouts, and 19 walks in 61.1 innings pitched. He is facing a Dodgers’ offense that has struggled mightily over the past seven days. During those seven days, the Dodgers are ranked 26th in runs (26), last in OBP (.298), and 24th in slugging (.402).

Get Ready For The ‘Zombie Cardinals’ Version 11.0 In 2016: Cubs Are Favored In Division – But Gap Isn’t Huge

St. Louis has been an elite team in the National League for the last 15 years. While Chicago deserves to be favorite in the NL Central - and to win the World Series, never sleep on the St. Louis Cardinals. This team has 9 LCS Appearances since 2000, and did win 100 win games last campaign. Throw in a championship pedigree - and a brilliant youth movement, aided by a few cagey veterans, and the gap is just not that great compared with the Cubs.

This team has 9 LCS Appearances since 2000, and did win 100 win games last campaign. Throw in a championship pedigree – and a brilliant youth movement, aided by a few cagey veterans, and the gap is just not that great compared with the Cubs.  A huge effort by Adam Wainwright, with less than perfect years from Arrieta and Lester may be all it takes for the RedBirds to remain the kings of the NL Central.

Follow The MLB Reports On Twitter

The Cubs have signed Dexter Fowler and traded away Chris Coghlan yesterday, and the Cards will have another week this winter where they are not the focus of the NL Central.  It probably suits them just fine.

On the heels of a 100 win campaign during 2015, the gambling websites, PECOTA and FanGraphs are all projecting a massive regression for St. Louis in 2016.  I am not one of those people.

I, for one, think the Cardinals are still to be reckoned with.

Switch out a potentially healthy Matt Holliday, coupled with full years from Stephen Piscotty and Randal Grichuk – for the departed Jason Heyward to the Cubs, and I like that.

Throw in Adam Wainwright and Mike Leake, for the loss of Lance Lynn and John Lackey, and I still like that almost as even.

No doubt that Ben Zobrist was a good singing for the Chicago Cubs this offseason, but lets not throw St. Louis over the cliff just yet. Read the rest of this entry
