Who Owns October (#WOO) Tallies Updated For October 21, 2017

FS1

Toughest WOO call I’ve had in a long time was between Charlie Morton’s 5 inning start and Lance McCullers Jr’s 4 inning save. I went with Morton but nothing bust respect for McCullers and clinching the pennant.

So who owned October?

Each winning team for every post season game gets a pitcher and a hitter who earn a full WOO (Who Owns October.)

And at my discretion, I award a 1/2 WOO’S to a worthy player on the losing team.

At the end of the post season, we will see who had the highest WOO total as a pitcher and a hitter.

A complete description of the rules can be found HERE.

From October 21

2017 ALCS Game 7:

Receiving 1 WOO

Jose Altuve reached base twice, homered and made several dazzling plays on the field to lead the Astros to a 4-0 pennant clinching victory over the Yankees.

Charlie Morton set the tone for the Astros with 5 shutout innings, striking out 5 Yankees along the way, earning the 4-0 decision.

Receiving 1/2 WOO

Greg Bird smacked a double, the Yankees last extra base hit of the season, but was thrown out at home trying to score the tying run. He would also fly out to end the ALCS and clinch the pennant for the Astros, 4-0.

David Robertson threw 2 shutout innings, striking out 3 Astros but the Yankees bats were dormant in the 4-0 ALCS finale.

Hey look at that! The Astros are back. After being shutout for the first 4 innings, Houston’s bats finally woke up. Verlander and Altuve did their thing and now we have a do or die Game 7.

You know the Dodgers are happy about these teams beating the tar out of each other.

So 40 years and a day after Reggie Jackson sunk the Dodgers with 3 homers, Enrique Hernandez picked the Dodgers on his back with 3 homers of his own.

The Dodgers are World Series bound and it wasn’t even close tonight. The player known as Kiki etched his name into Dodger lore and Clayton Kershaw is now 4 team wins away from erasing any doubt of his Cooperstown legacy.

Meanwhile the Cubs… well, they showed just how hard it is to repear.

Enrique Hernandez tied single game post season records with 3 homers and 7 RBI, including a grand slam, to mash the Dodgers into the World Series with an 11-1 drubbing of the Champion Cubs.

Clayton Kershaw threw 6 strong innings, allowing 3 hits and 1 run, striking out 5 Cubs to earn the 11-1 decision for the pennant winning Dodgers.

Receiving 1/2 WOO

Kris Bryant homered to provide all the Cubs offense as they were hammered by the Dodgers, 11-1.

Brian Duensing was the only Cubs pitcher to prevent the Dodgers from scoring, tossing a pair of shutout innings as the defending champs saw their reign end in an 11-1 blowout.

Ohhhh boy. This classic Yankee hater is bracing for a Bronx Pennant which I was NOT prepared for this year.

But Gary Sanchez and company are making it a magical fall for a team that has upset one 100 win team and on the verge of beating another one.

Meanwhile the defending Champs are alive for another day… now here comes Kershaw.

If the Astros bullpen did not have an epic meltdown, we might have a pair of clinchers tomorrow.

Instead the Yankees are VERY much in it and Houston should be a little nervous.

Meanwhile the Cubs dreams of a repeat could be over in less than 24 hours and the Dodgers post season remains perfect. Remind me about September momentum again?

Yu Darvish struck out 7 Cubs in 6 1/3 innings, allowing 1 run to get the 6-1 win for the Dodgers.

Sonny Gray allowed 1 hit, 1 earned run and 1 unearned run over 5 plus strong innings. He did not get the decision but helped set up the Yankees 6-4 victory against the Astros.

Aaron Judge  put the Yankees on the board with a 7th inning homer and then tied the game with an 8th inning RBI double. He would score on the go ahead double to complete the Yankees 6-4 comeback over Houston.

Chris Taylor homered and tripled, driving in 2, to lead the Dodgers past the Cubs, 6-1.

Receiving 1/2 WOO

Yuli Gurriel smacked a 3 run double that looked like it put the Astros up for good. But the Yankees came back for a 6-4 win.

Lance McCullers Jr. dominated the Yankees over 6 shutout innings, allowing 1 hit. He gave up a homer in the 7th and gave way to the Houston bullpen who melted down and gave up the 6-4 final.

Kyle Schwarber homered, walked and threw a runner out at second but the Cubs were no match for the Dodgers and fell 6-1.

Well, it is safe to say Joe Maddon did NOT own October. At least Wade Davis is really rested. And I am guessing that John Lackey isn’t going to pitch in Game 3… or maybe ever again.

Meanwhile Justin Turner has etched himself into Dodger lore by hitting a walk off on the anniversary of the Kirk Gibson shot.

It is looking more and more like the Dodgers year.

So who owned October?

Each winning team for every post season game gets a pitcher and a hitter who earn a full WOO (Who Owns October.)

Who Owns October (#WOO) Tallies Updated For October 14, 2017

verlander

Well it is safe to say that Justin Verlander has worked out as a nice trade for Houston. Both he and Kershaw are former Cy Young winners trying to exorcise their October demons. One of them threw a complete game victory.

Meanwhile Carlos Correa and Yasiel Puig showed a flair for the dramatic, especially with homers that juuuuuuust cleared the wall.

2017 ALCS Game 2:
2017 NLCS Game 1:

Receiving 1 WOO

Carlos Correa drove in the Astros first run with a home run and ended the game with a walk off double in the 9th to top the Yankees, 2-1.

Kenley Jansen struck out all 4 batters he faced to close out the save as the Dodgers took game 1, 5-2, over the Cubs.

Yasiel Puig put the Dodgers on the board with an RBI double and added his first ever post season homer to seal the 5-2 victory over the Cubs.

Justin Verlander threw a dominating complete game, striking out 13 Yankees with only 1 walk to earn the 2-1 decision for Houston.

Receiving 1/2 WOO

Albert Almora Jr. hit a 2 run homer to give the Cubs an early lead. They could not hold it and fell short to the Dodgers, 5-2.

Todd Frazier hit a bizarre game tying double that got stuck in the fence. It wasn’t enough as the Yankees fell to the Astros, 2-1.

Tommy Kahnle was pressed into service early because of Severino’s injury. He responded with 2 innings of no hit shutout ball in the Yankees 2-1 loss to the Astros.

N.Y. Post: Charles Wenzelberg

So we are now living in a world where the YANKEES are the plucky Underdog, trying to upset the 100 win Indians and Astros.

That’s strange. And Jose Altuve is having nothing of it. He is turning the 2017 post season into his own personal legend building tour.

Think of this. Between the Division Series and ALCS, Altuve is batting .579 with an OPS of 1.705. If he slugs Houston to a title and continues to put up 200 hit seasons throughout his career, he would have the Hall of Fame resume that only requires piling up stats.

In other words, we may be watching a legend being born. Pay attention.

2017 National League Division Series Game 5:

Jose Altuve kept on hitting. He went 3 for 4, stole a base and scored the first run to help Houston edge the Yankees, 2-1.

Dallas Keuchel shut down the strong New York lineup with 7 innings of shutout ball, striking out 10 and earning the 2-1 decision for the Astros.

Receiving 1/2 WOO

Greg Bird got two hits and broke up the shutout with a 9th inning homer that was not enough as the Yankees fell to the Astros, 2-1.

Masahiro Tanaka held the Astros to 4 hits and 2 runs over 6 solid innings but he absorbed the hard luck 2-1 Yankee loss.

There goes my “Indians vs. Nationals World Series” pick! Man, the heart break in Washington right now must be intense. (As in Cleveland too.) But the beat goes on for the Cubs who look to be the first repeat champion since the 1998-1999-2000 Yankees.

Man, that’s quite a change from Billy Goats.

Willson Contreras got on base 3 times, scored a pair of runs and made a game turning snap throw to first that was eventually called an inning ending pick off that took the wind out of the Nationals sails and set up the Cubs clinching 9-8 victory.

Wade Davis came into the 7th for a 7 out save. He got some help from a double play and  a pick off that was reviewed and overturned but he went 1-2-3 in the 9th to seal the wild 9-8 Cubs win to eliminate the Nationals.

Receiving 1/2 WOO

Sean Doolittle struck out a pair and threw a 1-2-3 ninth inning to give the Nationals a chance to clinch in the bottom half of the inning. They came up short to the Cubs, 9-8.

Michael Taylor reached base 3 times, homered and drove in 4 in the Nationals heart breaking 9-8 loss to the Cubs.

We live in a world where the Yankees played the Indians… one team was a group of scrappy new comers and the other was the World Series bound super power… and the scrappy new comers won. And the roles are reversed. Didi Gregorius homered twice off of Corey Kluber and one of the great upsets in recent playoff history was complete.

Meanwhile Stephen Strasburg has his critics and guess what? HE ANSWERED THEM!

Ohhhh we were so close to a Game 5 in Houston with no clue what pitchers were available. Ah well… congrats to the Astros and nice season Red Sox.

The Dodgers have their groove back and finished the only sweep so far. I guess the Diamondbacks weren’t the threat we all thought they were going to be.

Meanwhile Max Scherzer wanted to make history. Instead the Nationals are almost history themselves.

The Yankees of all teams have pushed the mighty Indians to the brink

Cody Bellinger reached base 3 times, homered and made a highlight reel catch to help the Dodgers clinch with a 3-1 victory over Arizona.

Alex Bregman launched a stunning game tying homer off of Sale in the 8th inning and saved the Division Series for the Astros in the 5-4 win against the Red Sox.

Yu Darvish allowed 2 hits and 1 run over 5 innings, striking out 7 Arizona batters in the process as the Dodgers swept the Diamondbacks with a 3-1 win.

Ken Giles closed out an epic Division Series match up with a six out save that clinched the 5-4 Houston victory in Boston.

Aaron Judge doubled home a pair to pad the lead and help the Yankees stun Cleveland, 7-3.

Jose Quintana struck out 7 Nationals over 5 2/3 innings where he allowed 1 unearned run. He did not get the decision but the Cubs won 2-1.

Anthony Rizzo singled home the go ahead run in the 8th inning to push the Cubs past Washington, 2-1.

Luis Severino redeemed his Wild Card Game disaster with 7 innings of 4 hits ball, striking out 9 Indians, winning 7-3 and giving the Yankees a chance to clinch with a Game 5.

Receiving 1/2 WOO

Andrew Benitendi hit a 2 run go ahead homer to give Boston hope. But the Astros came back to win 5-4 and clinch.

Archie Bradley threw 2 2/3 innings of 1 hit shutout ball to keep the Diamondbacks in the game but the Dodgers topped them 3-1 to finish the series.

Daniel Descalso homered to give the Diamondbacks their only run which was not enough to keep the Dodgers from sweeping the series with a 3-1 final.

Chris Sale kept the Astros scoreless for 4 brilliant innings out of the bullpen. But he could not stretch it to a 5th when he was charged with 2 runs, lost the 5-4 decision and saw the Red Sox get eliminated.

Carlos Santana hit a run homer but it wasn’t enough as the Indians could not close out the Yankees with a 7-3 final.

Max Scherzer took a no hitter into the 7th, whiffing 7 Cubs along the way. He would give up one hit and be charged with one run and the Nationals bullpen took the 2-1 defeat.

Ryan Zimmerman doubled home the Nationals only run as they were pushed to the brink by the Cubs, 2-1.

Well… we have at least ONE more day where all of the playoff series are alive. At least ONE more day where we will have four playoff games within 24 hours. The Red Sox, who looked dead from the neck up and down 3-0 before they even came to bat, woke up and clobbered Houston.

Meanwhile the Yankees bats were silent but Joe Girardi couldn’t find a way to bungle THIS one run game.

All four series are alive and well (even though 3 can end tomorrow!)

With 2 swings of a bat the entire post season changed for the Nationals. They were about to go down 0-2 and looked limp heading to Wrigley. Now they are tied with Max Scherzer in the bump.

2017 American League Division Series Game 2:

Receiving 1 WOO

Kris Bryant broke up a no hitter in the 6th with a 2 out RBI single and would later come around to score as the Cubs blanked the Nationals, 3-0.

Carlos Correa homered, doubled and walked, driving in 4 as the Astros rolled again over Boston, 8-2.

Yan Gomes got on base 3 times including a dramatic walk off single in the bottom of the 13th in Cleveland’s wild 9-8 win against the Yankees.

Kyle Hendricks threw 7 shutout innings to earn the 3-0 decision for the Cubs over Washington.

Clayton Kershaw pitched into the 7th, allowing 5 hits and striking out 7 at the Dodgers took the opener against Arizona, 9-5.

Dallas Keuchel struck out 7 Red Sox in 5 2/3 innings to get the 8-2 victory for the Astros.

Josh Tomlin came out of the bullpen in the 12th and retired all 6 Yankees he faced, striking out 3 and setting up the walk off 9-8 finale in Cleveland.

Justin Turner homered in the first inning, reached base 4 times altogether, driving in 5 runs to lead the Dodgers past Arizona, 9-5.

Receiving 1/2 WOO

Zack Godley was pressed into service in the second inning and gave the Diamondbacks 5 frames of relief, allowing 2 earned runs and striking out 5. But it was too little too late as Los Angeles took the game, 9-5.

J. D. Martinez got 3 hits, including a homer, in the Diamondbacks 9-5 loss to the Dodgers.

David Price came out of the bullpen to throw 2 2/3 shutout innings and stop the bleeding. Nothing else worked however and the Astros clobbered the Red Sox, 8-2.

Gary Sanchez hit a startling 2 run homer off of Kluber in the first inning and added another hit. But the Yankees had an equally shocking meltdown and fell in 13 innings to the Indians, 9-8.

Stephen Strasburg took a no hitter into the 6th and allowed just 2 unearned runs and 3 hits over 7 innings, striking out 10 Cubs along the way. He would be charged with the hard luck 3-0 decision for the Nationals.

Christian Vazquez reached base 3 times and scored but the Red Sox were once again pounded by Houston, 8-2.

Well… it is safe to say Jose Altuve is ready for the big stage. When you hit 3 homers in a game, you join names like Babe Ruth, Reggie Jackson, George Brett, Albert Pujols and Adrian Beltre for all time players to smash a trio of taters. (Oddly Adam Kennedy is also on that list.)

Chris Sale, the Red Sox best hope for a victory in the post season, pulled his best Clayton Kershaw in October impersonation, and that is no compliment.

Meanwhile Terry Francona held back his ace one day but got an ace like performance from the replacement starter. The Indians took Game 1 and have a rested and ready Corey Kluber for Game 2.

Good Luck Yankees.

Man, it has been a rough post season for starting pitchers so far. EVERYONE’S bats are on fire. Hell, even an Arizona RELIEVER got an RBI triple tonight.

It was a wild game but Arizona held on and sadly the prospect of a World Series played in Denver and Minnesota will have to wait another year.

So who owned October?

Each winning team for every post season game gets a pitcher and a hitter who earn a full WOO (Who Owns October.)

Receiving 1/2 WOO

Chris Rusin threw 2 1/3 shutout innings of relief, fanning 3 Diamondbacks and stopped the bleeding for a while. The Rockies could not complete the comeback and fell, 11-8.

Well… for 1/2 an inning, everything looked perfect for Minnesota, didn’t it? Then they were out scored 8-1 after that 3 run uprising. It was fun while it lasted for Twins fans and no doubt they will be back as contenders.

But last night was about the Yankees power and their tremendously deep bullpen. The playoffs have begun.

Brian Cassella – Chicago Tribune

The Cubs have won their first World Series game since Game 6 of the 1945 World Series. Meanwhile Terry Francona lost a World Series game for the first time ever as a manager.

So who owned October and the World Series?

Each winning team for every post season game gets a pitcher and a hitter who earn a full WOO (Who Owns October.)

And at my discretion, I award a 1/2 WOO’S to a worthy player on the losing team.

But the World Series deserves its own stats. WOWS (Who Owns the World Series.)

At the end of the post season, we will see who had the highest WOO total as a pitcher and a hitter. The WOWS total will be kept separately. Each game now counts towards both tallies.
