Tigers Trade Justin Wilson & Alex Avila; Fare A Bit Better
In what was a trade that was a foregone conclusion, the Detroit Tigers have traded closer Justin Wilson and catcher Alex Avila to the Chicago Cubs for minor league infielder Jeimer Candelario and another minor league infielder Isaac Paredes. In addition to the two minor leaguers’ the Tigers will also receive cash or a player to be named later.
The defending champion Cubs have a 2.5 game lead over the surprising Milwaukee Brewers currently, but have struggled mightily with their bullpen and were looking for a catcher after trading away the clubhouse cancer that is known as Miguel Montero.
Justin Wilson came to the Tigers in 2015, when he was acquired from the New York Yankees for Luis Cessa and Chad Green. Wilson had his ups and downs last year, but came out strong to start the season and took over for Francisco Rodriguez as the closer after K-Rod looked like he was throwing BP to the other team. Since taking over as the closer, Wilson has a 3.65 ERA, a .205 average against, with 29 K’s, and 11 saves, blowing 2 saves in 13 chances.

Tigers Fleeced In Trade Of J.D. Martinez
In case you were under a rock yesterday, or at least not on social media, the Tigers finally moved J.D. Martinez in a four player trade to the Arizona Diamondbacks. With Martinez’s free-agency around the corner and a forecasting of a annual salary approaching or exceeding $20MM a year to sign him, the writing was on the wall if the Tigers found themselves out of the race, which of course they are. The Tigers received SS/3B Dawel Lugo, SS/2B Sergio Alcantara, and SS/2B Jose King. Dawel was rated by MLB Pipeline as the 4th best prospect in the organization, with Alcantara 15th, and King outside of the top 30.
The Diamondbacks get what some are referring to as the top bat available at the deadline in J.D., who was hitting .305 with 16 homers after missing the first six weeks of the season and just coming off AL Player of the Week honors. Before this season, J.D. had been averaging 28 homers a year and a .299 average with an OPS of .898. Again though, with the Tigers current payroll issues, and now in a rebuilding mode, it was time for J.D. to go.

Milwaukee Brewers History: July 9-18, 1982
This weekend the Milwaukee Brewers honored the 1982 World Series team with special promotions and ceremonies. I’ve done my fair share of reminiscing of that team over the weekend, and it got me thinking…what exactly were the Brewers up to on these dates in 1982?
I vaguely remembered some of the details from the research for my Brewers book, but started revisiting that specific era (July 14-16, 1982) again to put myself back in the right frame of mind for this blog post. So here are the details…

Sully Baseball Podcast – Thoughts on the All Star Game, Satchel Paige, Jose Reyes and the 1996 Padres – July 12, 2017
The All Star Break lumbers on. I give some All Star Game rule changes and make a suggestion for the Marlins to honor Satchel Paige.
Meanwhile, the Mets stupidly honor Jose Reyes and I figure out which San Diego Padres team should have won.

Sully Baseball Podcast – Making In Memoriam and the Mariners Team That Should Have Won – July 9, 2017
Sitting watching my cousin try out for college baseball coaches, I talk about the making of the In Memoriam video. Plus I figure out which year for the Seattle Mariners would be their team that should have won.

The Curious Case of Clyde Wright
Clyde “Skeeter” Wright had his name etched in the Milwaukee Brewers record books in 1974, although not for what anyone would have expected after he was acquired. Wright became the only Brewers pitcher to lose 20 games in a single season after he posted a 9-20 record.
It has often been argued that to achieve a 20-game loss season in baseball means those specific starters were actually very good. The list of pitchers on the all-time list include 20-game winners and members of the Hall of Fame. Some won and lost 20 games in the same season – the most recent being Phil Niekro of the Atlanta Braves with a 21-20 record in 1979.
