Who Owns October (#WOO) Tallies Updated For October 16, 2018

Jackie Bradley Jr. is hitting the hardest .200 I’ve ever seen in a series. He doesn’t get many hit, but MAN he makes them count.
The Red Sox were already up 4-2 when he came up with the bases loaded and two outs in the 8th. J. D. Martinez and Steve Pearce already made their marks with the bat. Nathan Eovaldi continued to be the ace of the post season.
But Jackie Bradley Jr.’s grand slam put the game away and suddenly put the Red Sox, who looked over matched in the series opener, in the driver’s seat.
Meanwhile, the Dodgers took a 13th inning thriller to make sure their NLCS will be a potential classic. Cody Bellinger didn’t start the game, but he made sure to end it.
So who owned October?
Each winning team for every post season game gets a pitcher and a hitter who earn a full WOO (Who Owns October.)
And at my discretion, I award a 1/2 WOO’S to a worthy player on the losing team.
At the end of the post season, we will see who had the highest WOO total as a pitcher and a hitter.

ALCS Game 3:
NLCS Game 4:
Receiving 1 WOO
Cody Bellinger came off the bench to go 2 for 4, including the walk off 13th inning single, giving the Dodgers a 2-1 win over the Brewers.
Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a 2 out 8th inning grand slam that broke the game wide open, giving the Red Sox an 8-2 victory over the Astros.
Nathan Eovaldi threw 6 strong innings, holding Houston to 2 runs, earning the 8-2 decision for the Red Sox.
Kenley Jansen threw a pair of critical shutout innings in relief to set up the Dodgers dramatic 2-1 extra inning defeat of the Brewers.
Receiving 1/2 WOO
Jose Altuve reached base three times and scored both Astros run but they would fall to Boston, 8-2.
Ryan Braun collected 3 hits but was stranded each time in the Brewers 2-1 extra inning loss to the Dodgers.
Dallas Keuchel worked through early trouble to give the Astros 5 innings, allowing 2 Boston runs. The bullpen would drop the 8-2 final.
Freddy Peralta came out of the bullpen during a second inning emergency. He responded with a 3 inning shutout and no hit post season debut, striking out 6 Dodgers along the way. The Brewers would fall in 13 innings, 2-1.

Jose Altuve sparked a wild comeback with a walk and later in the same inning launched a homer, reaching base 4 times altogether in the wild 10-5 Astros win over the Angels.
Trea Turner got on base 3 times,homered and stole a base as the Nationals blanked the Mets, 6-0.
Justin Verlander threw 6 innings of 1 hit, shutout ball, striking out 11 Angels. He did not get the decision but he set up the 10 Houston victory.
Rich Hill struck out 7 Padres in 7 innings, allowing 1 run as the Dodgers held onto their Division Lead with a 7-2 final.

Corey Kluber allowed 1 hit over 7 shutout innings as the Indians blanked the White Sox, 12-0.
Javier Baez went 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored and a stolen base to lead the Cubs past the Dodgers, 4-0.
Jon Lester pitched 7 scoreless innings, allowing 5 Dodger hits and earned the 4-0 decision for the Cubs.

Mike Trout had the best offensive night of his career, which is saying something. He went 5 for 5 with 3 doubles, a homer and 4 RBI to lead the Angels past the Yankees, 11-4.
Scooter Gennett also collected 5 hits, including a homer, as the Reds held on to take a 6-5 thriller in Colorado.
Daniel Mengden threw a complete game 2 hit shutout, striking out 5 Diamondbacks in the A’s 3-0 final.
Aaron Nola took a no hitter into the 7th, finishing with 6 2/3 innings, 1 hit and 1 run while striking out 10 Blue Jays. He did not get the decision but set up the Phillies’ 2-1 win.

Justin Verlander and Jose Altuve Owned October (Final #WOO Tally and Results)

The World Series is over. The Houston Astros have their first ever title in franchise history. And it is appropriate that the two players with the highest WOO (Who Owns October) score would be heroes for Houston.
Mapping the entire post season, Justin Verlander won a game in the Division Series as a starter and another as a reliever over Boston, clinched the ALCS MVP by dominating the Yankees and pitched well in the World Series over the Dodgers.
Meanwhile Altuve homered 3 times in the opening game of the Division Series and finished the 4 game defeat of Boston with a .533 average and an OPS of 1.765. His slugging continued in the ALCS with 3 homers, a .974 OPS and big plays against the Yankees.
His stats in the World Series were not as robust but he still homered twice, including a dramatic 3 run game tying shot in the wild Game 5 victory and drove in 6 runs in the 7 game series.
While Verlander and Altuve got the highest totals, they were by no means the only October heroes.
Verlander’s 4 1/2 WOO total beat out Clayton Kershaw’s 3 1/2 and Kenley Jansen’s 3.
Altuve’s final of 4 barely beat Aaron Judge, who had 3 1/2 despite not even playing in the World Series. George Springer, who took the World Series MVP and Justin Turner, who had a huge post season, also had 3 1/2, barely behind Altuve’s total.
Looking back at the final tally is odd because it encompasses the entire post season. So yes, Trevor Story of the Rockies and Brian Dozier of the Twins are on there from their Wild Card Game losses. There are Yankee, Red Sox and Nationals players with a WOO total who saw their managers let go before the October tallies were done.
But in the end, Verlander and Altuve were good representatives of owning October. They certainly led Houston to the greatest baseball moment in the city’s history.

Toughest WOO call I’ve had in a long time was between Charlie Morton’s 5 inning start and Lance McCullers Jr’s 4 inning save. I went with Morton but nothing bust respect for McCullers and clinching the pennant.

2017 ALCS Game 7:
Receiving 1 WOO
Jose Altuve reached base twice, homered and made several dazzling plays on the field to lead the Astros to a 4-0 pennant clinching victory over the Yankees.
Charlie Morton set the tone for the Astros with 5 shutout innings, striking out 5 Yankees along the way, earning the 4-0 decision.
Receiving 1/2 WOO
Greg Bird smacked a double, the Yankees last extra base hit of the season, but was thrown out at home trying to score the tying run. He would also fly out to end the ALCS and clinch the pennant for the Astros, 4-0.
David Robertson threw 2 shutout innings, striking out 3 Astros but the Yankees bats were dormant in the 4-0 ALCS finale.

Justin Verlander tossed 7 dominating shutout innings, striking out 8 Yankees and saving the Astros season with a 7-1 final.
Receiving 1/2 WOO
Chad Green stopped the surging Astros with 2 1/3 no hit shutout innings. But it wasn’t enough as the Yankees fell, 7-1.
Aaron Judge homered for the Yankees only run in their 7-1 crushing by the Astros.

So we are now living in a world where the YANKEES are the plucky Underdog, trying to upset the 100 win Indians and Astros.
That’s strange. And Jose Altuve is having nothing of it. He is turning the 2017 post season into his own personal legend building tour.
Think of this. Between the Division Series and ALCS, Altuve is batting .579 with an OPS of 1.705. If he slugs Houston to a title and continues to put up 200 hit seasons throughout his career, he would have the Hall of Fame resume that only requires piling up stats.
In other words, we may be watching a legend being born. Pay attention.

Dallas Keuchel shut down the strong New York lineup with 7 innings of shutout ball, striking out 10 and earning the 2-1 decision for the Astros.

Greg Bird got two hits and broke up the shutout with a 9th inning homer that was not enough as the Yankees fell to the Astros, 2-1.
Masahiro Tanaka held the Astros to 4 hits and 2 runs over 6 solid innings but he absorbed the hard luck 2-1 Yankee loss.

Chris Sale, the Red Sox best hope for a victory in the post season, pulled his best Clayton Kershaw in October impersonation, and that is no compliment.
Meanwhile Terry Francona held back his ace one day but got an ace like performance from the replacement starter. The Indians took Game 1 and have a rested and ready Corey Kluber for Game 2.

Jean Segura Isn’t the Only Hitter Fighting Regression Following a Unique Performance
After being a pleasant surprise at the plate for the Milwaukee Brewers during the 2013 season, Jean Segura‘s production completely went down the drain — until he got a fresh start in 2016 with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
He didn’t earn an All-Star selection for his efforts, but it was such a unique performance that the Seattle Mariners acquired him in one of the 1,000 trades they made this winter.
How unique was it, exactly? Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto accurately put the middle infielder’s accomplishments into perspective to Bob Dutton of The News Tribune:
“The year that he had is one of just five seasons in this century where a hitter was able to throw out 200 hits, a .300 batting average, 20 home runs, 40 doubles, 30 stolen bases and 100 runs scored.”
Since he literally doubled his wRC+ (63 in ’15 to 126 in ’16), there’s a lot of attention on Segura with his new team. Is this the type of hitter they can expect to see moving forward? Dipoto said himself that given the rarity of this particular performance, it wouldn’t be realistic to expect it to be sustainable.
While Seattle’s new shortstop is one of just five players this century to produce like he did in the above six categories, he wasn’t the only hitter to do it in 2016 — Jose Altuve also accomplished the same feat.
2017 MLB Regular Season Player Prop Bet Odds Part 1
On this list of player over/unders it may be worth a well solution to wager over on all bets across the board and go for about a 60 percent win factor. I did bet a few unders on the sheet towards the end. I continue to find value on the whole gambling aspect of listed odds. I will throw down some more money on these selections. I am just hoping that I don’t become too over-confident for my own good.
With less than 2 months until the regular season begins, we are starting to see some prop bets show up online and in Las Vegas.
Come back by the start of March to see Over/Under wins for all 30 MLB clubs, and also when they decide to implement individual player prop bets.
With so many MVP candidates and Cy Young type pitchers, we are favoring Over a lot more than Under yet again in 2017.
We compiled a 6 – 0 individual player bet prop record, and were not so hot on these props listed, but we still managed a .500 record even for those.

6 MLB Teams That Will Benefit The Most By The New CBA
The Toronto Blue Jays have had to contend with the overspending in the last 25 years by the Yankees and Red Sox. With stiffer penalties now imposed on the higher payroll clubs. coupled with their recent back to back ALCS Appearances, the franchise draws enough to spend more money on total team salary in the next few years. It will come down to the management’s ability on player personnel that should determine their success for the next 5 years and not sheer finances.

I am calling the Nationals, Mariners, Astros, Jays, Cardinals and Giants the immediate victors under the new format.
When i was thinking about more the past two days, the new structure seems to favor mid level payroll teams more than the lower or higher payroll clubs.
With the new penalties for spending way more money than the Luxury Tax Threshold, the Yankees, Dodgers, Red Sox and Tigers are going to find that the impact will run pretty steep on their roster decisions for the next 5 years.
Being that that all of those franchises are still going to dole out the kind of money on player contracts they are, I am not calling them losers for the new CBA either. Read the rest of this entry
Seattle Mariners Showing A Riverboat Gambler Mentality With The Segura Deal: Why Not Covet Chris Carter Next?
The Seattle Mariners at a massive fork in the road for their franchise. The bulk of the roster is right at the peak of their careers, and with the A’s and Angels rebuilding. -and perhaps the Rangers taking a step back, GM Jerry DiPoto trading a young SP with a ton of potential in Taijuan Walker, in order to secure the biggest weakness the club suffered down the stretch in the 2016 season. In landing Jean Segura, the brass is hoping they have found the Leadoff man/Shortstop that will hep the break the longest MLB Playoff Drought currently.

i love the Jean Segura trade for the Martiners. In a deal announced over Thanksgiving, the M’s picked up the 2016 All – Star 2B/SS, along with Mitch Haniger and Zac Curtis for a return of Ketel Marte and Taijuan Walker.
The real meat of this trade boils down to Segura vs Walker.
I definitely think the SS position was a sore spot for Seattle down the stretch in 2016 – with Marte slumping after a hot start to begin the campaign.
Yes pitching is at a premium in the market place right now, however Walker, now 24, hasn’t delivered to the hype he came into the MLB with – and Seattle had him pegged as the #3 Starter on the Depth Chart, despite Ariel Miranda outperforming him last season.
Segura led the NL with hits in 2016 (203) – and featured a career best .319/.368/.499 – with an astounding 71 XBH (20 HRs, 7 = 3B and 41 Doubles.) This helped the 26 Year Old tally 102 Runs Scored, while swiping 33 Bases.
Even though projecting a repeat performance out of Segura in 2017 may be a huge stretch, this man posted an incredible overall year and it may be one of the most underrated campaigns for an offensive player in the Majors this past campaign. Read the rest of this entry

Noah Syndergaard struck out 11 Nationals in 7 innings, allowing 1 run. He did not get a decision but helped set up the Mets 4-3 extra inning win.
T. J. Rivera went 3 for 4 including a 10th inning homer that put the Mets up for good, 4-3 over Washington.

MLB Most Undervalued Player: Jose Altuve
Jose Altuve, 26 years old, has a very good chance at winning the American League MVP Award in 2016. So how in the world could a potential MVP Award winner be undervalued? In 2013, the 5’4 Houston Astros’ second baseman signed a four year/$12 million contract. The contract also has a $6 million fifth year club option and a $6.5 million sixth year club option. Since signing the contract in 2013, Altuve has earned the honors of being an American League All-Star in 2014, 2015, and 2016.
I think it’s hard to say a player is undervalued if they are still under team control or arbitration eligible, but Altuve’s long-term contract is way under his specific value. He is one of the best all-around players in all of baseball. He is currently batting .346, with 22 home runs, 95 runs, 90 RBIs, 26 stolen bases, .409 OBP, and a .557 slugging percentage. Out of all players in baseball, I can’t think of any other players who put up similar all-around numbers outside of Mike Trout and Mookie Betts. Altuve also won a Gold Glove award last year, which shows his value is much more than just his bat.

Joey Votto, Jose Altuve Aren’t the Only MLB Hitters Enjoying a Huge Second Half
The MLB regular-season schedule is a grind, and there’s a reason why they call it the “dog days of August.” For some reason, Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto and Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve aren’t paying much attention to that as they each chase history with torrid runs through the second half.
Basically, no opposing pitcher is safe, as they’re each looking to become the first hitters to hit over .400 after the All-Star game since some guy named Ichiro Suzuki did it in 2004.
While they’re grabbing all the headlines, they’re not the only ones tearing the cover off baseballs since the league’s brightest stars met up in San Diego. In fact, Votto and Altuve are just two of seven hitters with at least 30 second-half games played and a batting average higher than .350. Here’s a look at the list with some stats for perspective:

Daniel Murphy, Jose Altuve on Track to do Something we Haven’t Seen Since 2004
With about two months of play to go, the National League and American League playoff races are just starting to get interesting. However, the batting races appear to be all but finished thanks to the raking Daniel Murphy and Jose Altuve have done all season.
Entering action on Friday, each second baseman has a stranglehold on their respective league’s leaderboard when ranked by batting average. What’s so special about this? Well, I was looking through the box scores this week and kept thinking to myself, “God, these guys are still hitting close to .360? In August? When was the last time the batting champ in both leagues finished with an average over .350?”
As it turns out, this particular scenario isn’t as common as it used to be. Between 1990 and 2004, it happened eight different times.
A handful of batting champs have come close to reaching this benchmark since 2004, but haven’t quite gotten there. Is this .350 benchmark rather arbitrary? Probably, but oh well. This gets more interesting upon seeing the similarities between Murphy and Altuve, both with regard to the season they’re enjoying and the current situation they find themselves in. Here are four that stood out:
Daily Fantasy MLB DFS Picks For DraftKings 8/5/16
P- Jeremy Hellickson (vs. San Diego Padres): $9,300. Many people believed Hellickson was going to be traded at the trade deadline, but the Phillies decided to hang on to him. He has been dominant on the mound recently. Over his last three starts, he has a 2-0 record, 1.83 ERA, and 11 strikeouts in 19.2 innings pitched.
P- Blake Snell (vs. Minnesota Twins): $8,700. Snell has been fantastic on the mound since the All-Star break. His last three starts have come against very tough opponents and he has faired very well. In that time span, he threw 18 innings, with a 2-0 record, 2.00 ERA, and 22 strikeouts.

Daily Fantasy MLB DFS Picks For DraftKings 7/23/16
P- Max Scherzer (vs. San Diego Padres): $13,100. In 112 career at bats against Scherzer, the Padres’ lineup is batting .134, with four RBIs, and a .190 OBP. Over his last nine starts, Scherzer owns a 1.61 ERA, with 81 strikeouts, and 13 walks in 61.1 innings pitched. Needless to say, he is a great start on Saturday.
P- Kendall Graveman (vs. Tampa Bay Rays): $7,900. Over his last seven starts, Graveman owns a 4-0 record, with a 2.64 ERA. While he hasn’t faced the Rays’ lineup very much throughout his career, he has shown some success by holding them to a .213 batting average and a .368 slugging percentage.
