I woke up this morning by a text from my Red Sox loving friend Kenny Mack that Jon Lester and Jonny Gomes were dealt to the A’s for Yoenis Cespedes.
Good morning.
Kenny and I discussed the move and the legacies of both teams. We sometimes got off topic.

David Ortiz is incredible based on the consistent numbers he has put forth since everyone thought his career was winding down several years ago. The 38 Year Old DH continues to bash homers, win games, and now with a flurry of trades, the organization has given him some reinforcements in the 1 -9 lineup for a few years.

The Boston Red Sox are smart enough to realize a retool was in order.
To kickstart the festivities, the club made a pair of moves that includes Jon Lester and Jonny Gomes to Oakland for Cuban OF Yoenis Cespedes, followed by dealing Jon Lackey to the Cardinals for 1B/OF Allen Craig and SP Joe Kelly.
These deals have helped the Red Sox be better balanced on offense, and has freed up roster spots for their young prospects to thrive. Read the rest of this entry
Oakland A’s Payroll In 2014 + Contracts Going FWD: Updated For Trade Deadline Deals
Part of the lure in acquiring Samardzija was that he had 1 year left of Arbitration. He will likely cost in the $12 – 15 MIL range for 2015. He tops the list of several A’s players that will be ARB eligible in 2015 like Moss, Donaldson, Cook, Parker, Jaso, Reddick and Gentry. While the club is going for it in 2014, there unloading of Cespdes’s $10.5 MIL 2015 salary will be used to pay these guys raises. Some of the club will be traded or released. The A’s should still have about $25 MIL to spend on 7 or 8 guys next year. Their $95 MIL projected payroll in 2014 is their highest ever recorded for any one year.

Wow. What a roster that has been assembled by Billy Beane in the last 30 days or so.
Make no bones about it, the reason the Money Ball GM was able to this was one from depth strength – coupled with being the master of financial flexibility.
We all know that the A’s have shied away from giving long term pitching contracts, or heck, from lucrative long contracts to positional players.
Ever since the team offered Jermaine Dye a big deal at the time, only to see his production fall off, then to be resurrected in other uniforms, did the management learn to ply their craft.
The team also doled out megabucks for Eric Chavez after that, then to watch him suffer through countless injuries.
Players like Nick Swisher, Miguel Tejada, Johnny Damon, Tim Hudson, Barry Zito, Mark Mulder have left the nest to make fortunes in other locations.
Beane made off like a bandit dealing Rich Harden before he eventually broke down. Oh yeah, the GM received Josh Donaldson for that trade.
It has been a brass that sees about 50 roster transactions every year. The key is to always sell high, and mix in the right amount of Free Agent veterans.
All of that ‘baseball rounding’ afforded the “Moneyball” GM to go for it this year. Read the rest of this entry
Beane Acquires Lester + Gomes For Cespedes: Then Acquires Fuld For Millone
Jon Lester, 30, is in the last year of his contract, which will make him around $4 MIL for the last 2 months of the 2014 season. While there is no way he signs with Oakland past this campaign, this is a calculated move to land a playoff assassin that can front a franchise a #1 starter for a playoff series – or as the pitcher in a Play in Wild Card game should the Angels run the A’s down for the AL West. Much like Samardzija, the Athletics brass knows these guys could never be acquired via Free Agency, and have the wherewithal to know that inking longterm aces to deals past the age of 30 is just not in the cards for the franchise. The A’s were put in the position to rent them because of Beane’s nice deals to build the organization’s depth. Lester features a 2.11 ERA in 76.2 IP worth of work in the Post season lifetime. Lester is 10 – 7, with a 2.52 ERA in 143.2 IP this season in 21 Game Starts.

Billy Beane has been adamant about his team winning the World Series in 2014, and he fired yet another salvo on the July 31st deadline.
The A’s GM acquired Jon Lester and Jonny Gomes for the popular Cuban OF Yoenis Cespedes.
Lets have the finances out of the way 1st.
Jon Lester, 30, is in the last year of his contract, and will be a Free Agent after this year.
There is no shot at the man signing with the Athletics after this year. however the A’s will receive a compensatory pick for giving him a qualifying offer following 2014.
The LHP wll make approximately $4 MIL the rest of the season.
Yoenis Cespedes, 28, is signed through the 2015 at $10.5 MIL per year the next 2 seasons, and will become a Free Agent after next year.
As per the article 20B section of the CBA, he negotiated that he would be free and clear once his original 4 YRs/$36 MIL deal with the A’s was completed – prior to the 2012 campaign.
The 2013 and 2014 HR Derby winner will make just south of $3.3 MIL for the rest of this year.
Jonny Gomes 33, will make about $1.5 MIL for the duration of the 2014 year, and will become a Free Agent this winter. Read the rest of this entry
Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (July 30th) – Updated Yearly #WOB Totals For 2014

Matt Kemp reached base 4 times including a homer and a walk off single in the 10th, giving the Dodgers a 3-2 victory over the Braves.
Nick Castellanos went 2-4 with a homer and 4 RBI in Detroit’s 7-2 win over the White Sox.
Zack Greinke dominated the Braves with an 8 innings, 1 run 13 strikeout performance. The bullpen blew his chance for a decision but the Dodgers walked off 3-2 winners.
Corey Kluber pitched a complete game 3 hit no walk shutout, striking out 8 as the Indians squeaked past the Mariners, 2-0.

When you look at the Philadelphia Phillies lineup, you will see a long history of the club drafting their own players.
Out of the 8 starters right now, only Ben Revere was not brought up by the franchise. He was dealt to the Phigtins, for Vance Worley.
As the Trade Deadline approaches, you can find Revere on his way out of town too.
Five years ago, the Infield was all in their prime, with Ryan Howard, Jimmy Rollins, Carlos Ruiz and Chase Utley manning four of the 5 positions.
They could hit for high averages, and club 100+ HR for those four, and each one of them were franchise players.
Ryan Howard and Jimmy Rollins both have taken home NL MVP Honors.
The organization won the 2008 World Series, appeared in the 2009 World Series, then the 2010 NLCS, and finally made their last appearance in the playoffs during a 1st round upset to St. Louis.
It was a gradual 5 year decline, and it all has happened under the watchful eye of Ruben Amaro Jr.
Pat Gillick was the one who orchestrated the majority of the transactions for the Phils success. Well at least he was the guy in charge.
Amaro has let a few years pass, and is overseeing a core of players now entering their mid 30’s – and rapidly declining in production.
As we stated in our Trade Deadline blog recently, Philadelphia needs to start assembling a re-tool of their franchise by trading some commodities right now while they have any value at all. Read the rest of this entry

Cole Hamels pitched 8 shutout innings, striking out 8 and walking none, beating the Mets, 6-0, in what could be his final start as a Philadelphia Phillie.
Matt Kemp went 3-4 with a pair of homers in what could be HIS final day as a Dodger, helping them to an 8-4 victory over the Braves.
Alex Cobb threw 8 strong innings, allowing just 3 hits, 1 run, striking out 12 and got the 5-1 decision for the surging Rays over the Brewers.
Brett Gardner continued his hot hitting with a 4-5 performance, smacking a homer and a pair of doubles and helping the Yankees hold on in a 12-11 slugfest in Texas.

How All Of The Brewers Hitters Were Acquired: 2014 Roster Tree
Milwaukee had a bad spell for the franchise from 1983 – 2007, where the club didn’t make the playoffs at all. Once Ryan Braun asserted himself on the team, the club started its transformation into a club capable of making it to the playoffs in any season. They made the 2008 postseason for the 1st time in 26 years, and 2011 saw them make it to the NLCS – before bowing out to the Cardinals. Their team had to fight through the Ryan Braun saga’s of 2012 and 2013, and now this team is back leading the NL Central in 2014. The teams lineup has been built with draft picks, smart acquisitions, and key waiver wire pick ups.

Mark Attanasio and Doug Melvin have been aggressive of the brass for the ‘Brew Crew’ over the last half a dozen years.
They have made strides to make the team relevant – by making trades for ALL – Star Pitchers, but they have also done some great drafting on the offensive side.
Ryan Braun, Jonathan Lucroy, Khris Davis, Scooter Gennett and Rickie Weeks were all great draft selections in the lineup, while Carlos Gomez was acquired by trading another great player in J.J. Hardy.
You also have a bench player like Logan Schafer drafted by the squad.
Heck, even Jean Segura was brought in with Zack Greinke (who was brought in with 4 Milwaukee players heading into the other direction.)
Add in some veteran leadership with Aramis Ramirez, Mark Reynolds and Lyle Overbay, and some waiver and low prospect Free Agent deals for Martin Maldonado, Jeff Bianchi and Elian Herrera.

Derek Jeter had 3 base hits in last night’s 4 – 2 loss to the Texas Rangers. In doing so, the man now has 3420 hits for his career.
Carl Yastrzemski had 3419 to hold onto the 8th spot previously, but Jeter’s 3420th hit seems to be confusing when you look at the websites of both http://www.mlb.com and http://www.baseballreference.com
BBREF has Honus Wagner listed at 3420, which would have El Capitan tying that mark for 7th last night, while MLB has Wagner listed at 3430 Career Hits.
All will be a moot point when Jeter passes the 3431 hits plateau in a few weeks, and shortly after that he should nestle into the 6th slot for good, when he passes Cap Anson. (3435)
For those that still don’t give Derek Jeter the respect he deserves, the man also is the Career Hits leader ever for an Infielder.
Of his 3420 base knocks. 3337 have come as a SS and 81 at the DH position, which is ahead of Wagner, Anson, and Eddie Collins.
The other 2 hits come via pinch hitting.

Melky Cabrera reached base three times including 2 homers, 3 runs and 5 RBI, leading the Blue Jays in a 14-1 demolishing of the Red Sox.
Jake Odorizzi pitched 7 innings allowing 3 hits, 1 run and no walks, earning the decision for the Rays 2-1 over the Brewers.
Adeiny Hechavarria went 2-4 including an RBI triple that tied the game in the 9th and scored the walk off run in the Marlins wild comeback 7-6 win over the Nationals.
Vance Worley threw a 4 hit shutout over the Giants and got the 5-0 victory for the Pirates.

With the trade deadline lurking this week, you have to factor this in when you are making bets.
I would be shocked if the Rays trade David Price before July.31, 2014. This team has erased so many deficits since 2008, and they have been the best team in the league for the last 25% of the year.
I would also predict the Royals to add a bat for the last 2 months.
Pittsburgh has a lot of money in their wallets for a few salary dumps even if they have to wait for the non-waiver deadline.
Cincinnati is fading fast and needs to wheel and deal for some replacement help.
St. Louis has never played well without Molina, and while I love the A.J. Pierzynski addition, they must not stay stagnant here.
The Yankees should break the bank on several more trades now that they are going to be Luxury Tax Abusers yet again!
The Braves should do a deal, yet they have been hampered by all of the payroll B.J. Upton and Dan Uggla eat up. Maybe 2014 is not their year.

Terry Francona took over a team that ended up 68-94 after being competitive for the first couple of months of the 2012 season. The team aadded some key offensive FA talent in 2013., but Francona also cultivated the attitude of this young team all the way to a playoff berth and an AL Manager Of The Year Award. His club’s offense was a big reason why the team was able to do this, and the team is competitive again in 2014 with virtually the same roster – and nice power threats.

When we look at how this offense was put together, we saw a lot of decent draft picks, a few nice trades sprinkled in, and a few Free Agents signed along the way.
With Francisco Lindor coming along the way, this is probably the swan song for SS Asdrubal Cabrera, however one can’t forget this franchise fleeced the Mariners for the asset that was Eduardo Perez. to obtain his services.
Cabrera has had a nice stay in Cleveland, with 2 ALL – Star Selections, one Silver Slugger – and has provided nice defense for the last 8 years.
It wasn’t the 1st time Cleveland won out in a trade with Seattle. Does Anybody remember Shin-Soo Choo for Ben Broussard?

Carlos Santana capped off a 9 for 14 series by getting on base 5 times with a pair of homers and 2 RBI helping the Indians top the Royals, 10-3.
Josh Harrison went 4-6 with a double and a homer and a pair of stolen bases as the Pirates won 7-5 in Colorado.
Yohan Pino allowed just 4 hits and 1 walk in 6 innings while striking out 6 White Sox batters. He did not get the decision but set up Minnesota’s 4-3 victory.
Doug Fister pitched 7 shutout innings, giving up just 3 hits and walking 1 as the Nationals took a tense 4-2 game in Cincinnati.

Martin Prado reached base 4 times, , including a double and a homer, and drove in 5 runs. His last RBI put the Diamondbacks ahead for good in the 10th inning of their 10-6 victory in Philadelphia.

How All Of The White Sox Hitters Were Acquired – 2014 Roster Tree: A Nice Job By The Brass To Revamp The Offense
Paul Konerko announced that the 2014 season will be his last. He has 439 career HR, 1409 RBI, and 6 All Star appearances in his 18 year career. What will most likely not be a HOF career, will certainly go down as one of the best in White Sox history. Konerko was the direct replacement for Frank Thomas. Konerko is only 16 HRs behind the 2014 “Hall Of Fame Inductee” for the White Sox franchise record. While he will not reach that mark, his role may increase now with some DH AB If Dunn is traded later this week. Konerko, now 38, was a 1998 trade acquisition – with OF Mike Cameron going back the other way to Cincinnati. While Cameron was a nice Major Leaguer in his time. Konerko should have his number retired by the club, and is the current active leader for HRs hit for just one team. He will soon hand the reigns of the team over to Jose Abreu and CO.

The White Sox have done a fantastic job of reassembling their young offensive core in the last year.
Signing International Free Agent Jose Abreu has expedited the time in which the franchise will have to wait to be competitive again.
Paul Konerko is in his last year in the Majors, and his 17th season with the Pale Hose.

Yasiel Puig tied a 113 year old Dodger franchise record by smashing 3 triples in a single game. He added a double for good measure, driving in 2 and scoring twice as the Dodgers demolished the Giants, 8-1.
Zack Greinke inched the Dodgers closer to first with 7 dazzling shutout innings, striking out 10 (including 4 in one inning) in the 8-1 blow out in San Francisco.
Ben Zobrist did not hit them hard, but he hit them often. His 4 hits helped the Rays beat the Red Sox 6-4 and win their 8th in a row.
David Price threw 8 strong innings, striking out 10 and walking none, topping his arch rival Red Sox for a 6-4 victory in Tampa Bay.

Current Odds (AL/NL) To Win The MLB League Championships In 2014
The American League has a lot more parity than the National League this year – with about 12 teams in contention for the playoffs, as opposed to about 8 realistic chances for the NL. The Tigers should be the ultimate favorite for this odd with the chance of the Angles catching the A’s, but overall, they accessed decent odds across the board in the junior circuit. The wheelhouse for value is within the middle teams like the Royals, Indians, Rays and Orioles.

As you will see in the odds at the end of this point, the NL top 5 teams are not worth betting for the League Odds, but rather the World Series.
I alluded to this earlier in the year.
For example, the Dodgers are +700 to win the World Series, but are favored at just +275. This is almost 2.5 times the amount. In essence, you would need the Dodgers to pay +140 in the Fall Classic, to make the same as winning the LCS, than betting them for the WS.
LA would probably be a great matchup versus any of the AL teams, and likely favored against all except for the Tigers. The pitching staff is too strong.
The AL has 3 teams totally eliminated from even thinking about playoffs in my view, with the White Sox on the cusp of the threshold.
Give me the Orioles at +1000 any time, as they may have an easier time winning the AL, than in a World Series matchup.
I also love the value of the Indians and Royals, as both teams are within earshot of the 2nd Wild Card leading Yankees and Blue Jays. and just behind the Mariners.

Get Ready for Torture Nats Fans
If you’re a baseball fan you’re really going to enjoy these final two months. If you’re a Nationals fan it is going to be pure torture. With the addition of the second Wild Card in 2012 there are now five playoff teams and in the NL there are currently seven teams within three games of each other. If things broke right in three days’ time the Pittsburgh Pirates could have the best record in the NL and the Milwaukee Brewers out of the playoffs entirely. This creates real danger for the teams leading a division.
No NL division leader has more than a three game lead with the Giants and Nationals both being half a game up in their divisions. The current Wild Card leaders are the Dodgers and Braves with the Cardinals and Pirates only a half game back of them. It isn’t hard to imagine one of the current division…

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (July 24th) – Updated Yearly #WOB Totals For 2014

Marcus Stroman pitched a no hitter into the 7th, finishing the game with 7 shutout 1 hit innings, striking out 7 as the Blue Jays thrashed the Red Sox, 8-0.
Brandon Moss got on base 3 times and hit a grand slam (that won me and everyone else in attendance a pizza!) helping the A’s clobber the Astros 13-1.
Matt Garza threw 8 innings of 2 hit ball, allowing just 1 run on a solo homer and earned the 9-1 win for the Brewers over the Mets.
Rene Rivera led a rare offensive outburst for the Padres, going 3-5 with a homer and 3 RBI in the 13-3 drubbing of the Cubs.
They owned baseball on July 24, 2014.

Ruben Amaro JR and the brass of the Phils have to face the facts – and start dismantling their team before they lose any relevant value. Philadelphia sits perched in the basement in the NL East, miles away from .500 – and continents away from a post season berth in 2014.

Ruben Amaro JR. should be fired for his lack of trade deadline movement, for not having knowledge on how OBP works, and basically for assembling a team that is near the bottom of the league despite having a huge payroll.
Someone also needs to tackle all management and ownership, to explain that selling off assets when you are atrocious in a year will not have you seen in a lesser light by your fanbase. It is good business.
You are the Phillies, It is a chance to replenish the organization with assets…It is not like you won’t re-spend the cash you will save – and likely you will become younger in the process before the 2015 campaign.
Philadelphia should be thanking the lucky stars that a lot of their offensive pieces are actually playing decently, so their value may be higher than it was in 2013.
Bare minimum is to trade everyone you can, I understand even if you want to keep Chase Utley and Cole Hamels.
These guys can bridge the gap to the next wave of success, and Ryan Howard isn’t going anywhere with the albatross contract, but he can at least hit near league averages with his power..
Marlon Byrd, Kyle Kendrick. Antonio Bastardo, John Mayberry JR, Jimmy Rollins, Cliff Lee, A.J. Burnett, Ben Revere and Jonathan Papelbon should all be on the trading block.
By virtue of completing any deals with these guys, plenty of dollars will be freed up – and you could receive some decent prospects in return.
Then in the off year, you could make serious runs at players like Jon Lester, Ian Kennedy, Justin Masterson, Asdrubal Cabrera, Nelson Cruz, Ervin Santana and so forth.
The inactivity of this franchise doing anything could set the team back 2 or 3 more years. As they age, their value on lessens.
With Tampa Bay jumping back into the race, you have the most assets to move – and it is a seller’s market. Don’t be foolish…. Read the rest of this entry
