Who Owned Baseball August 13, 2015 (Daily AL/NL Pitcher + Hitter MVP’s) + 2015 #WOB Standings

Mitch Moreland collected 4 hits including a 2 run double and a 2 run homer, helping the Rangers erase an early 4-0 hole and and win 6-5 in Minnesota.

Mark Buehrle pitched 7 strong innings, allowing 2 runs and striking out 8 to get the 4-2 decision for Toronto who swept Oakland for their 11th straight victory.

Kyle Schwarber reached base 4 times with a pair of homers and 4 RBI, helping the red hot Cubs crush the Brewers 9-2.

Noah Syndergaard allowed a pair of first inning homers and then settled down to keep the Rockies to 3 runs and 4 hits over 7 innings, and earned the 12-3 decision for the first place Mets.

They all owned baseball on August 13, 2015

Earning 1/2 WOBs on losing efforts.

Eric Hosmer singled and homered, scoring twice and driving in a pair in Kansas City’s 7-6 loss to the Angels.

Jeremy Guthrie held the Angels to 2 hits and 1 run over 6 innings. However the Royals bullpen had a very rare meltdown and lost the 7-6 game in the 9th.

Enrique Hernandez went 3 for 4 and added a walk but was stranded every time as the Dodgers lost to the Reds, 10-3.

Stephen Strasburg struck out 8 Giants in 6 innings but also let up a pair of runs and lost the 3-1 game for the Nationals.

Hisashi Iwakuma threw the fifth no hitter in Mariners history, walking 3 Orioles and striking out 7, sealing the 3-0 final.

Clayton Kershaw was perfect into the 6th and finished with 8 innings of 3 hit shutout ball, walking no Washington batter and striking out 8, earning the 3-0 decision for the Dodgers.

Aaron Hicks went 4 for 5 with a homer, four runs scored and a circus catch in centerfield to help the Twins demolish the Rangers, 11-1.

J. T. Realmuto went 3 for 5 with 3 runs scored, 6 RBI, a triple and a grand slam to help Miami win a 14-6 laugher over Boston.

They all owned baseball on August 12, 2015.

Lorenzo Cain went 4 for 4 with a double and a homer to lead the first place Royals to a 6-1 victory over the Tigers.

Yasiel Puig homered, tripled and drove in 5 runs as the Dodgers logged a much needed 5-0 win over Washington.

Carlos Rodon threw 7 shutout innings, allowing 4 hits, 1 walk and striking out 11 Angels batters, earning the 3-0 decision for the White Sox.

Madison Bumgarner threw a complete game allowing 5 hits and 1 walk and striking out 12 Houston batters, winning 3-1 in San Francisco.

They all owned baseball on August 11, 2015.

Johnny Cueto pitched in front of the Kansas City crowd as a Royal for the first time and did not disappoint. He threw a complete game 4 hit shutout, striking out 8 Detroit batters and walking none, earning the 4-0 decision.

Gio Gonzalez went 8 shutout innings, allowing 7 hits, 1 walk and 6 strikeouts, giving the Nationals a much needed easy 8-3 win over the Dodgers.

Avisail Garcia launched a pair of homers, driving in 4, helping the White Sox past the Angels, 8-2.

Wellington Castillo clubbed his 8th homer in 12 games and added a 3 run triple as the Diamondbacks humiliated the Phillies, 13-3.

They all owned baseball on August 10, 2015.

Jackie Bradley Jr. reached base 3 times, including a triple and a homer, drove in 5 runs and made a spectacular back to home plate catch in center field to help the Red Sox top the fading Tigers, 7-2.

Francisco Cervelli singled, tripled and homered, driving in 3 runs and led the Pirates to a wild 13-6 come from behind victory over the Dodgers.

Corey Kluber took a no hitter into the 7th and finished with a three hit complete game 8-1 win over the Twins in Cleveland.

Jake Arrieta pitched shutout ball for 7 2/3 innings, allowing 4 hits, 2 walks and struck out 6 Giants as the Cubs completed the 4 game sweep, 2-0.

They all owned baseball on August 9, 2015.

Andrew McCutchen reached base 4 times, including a double, scored a run, drove in another and stole a base in the Pirates 6-5 win over the Dodgers.

Mike Trout celebrated his birthday by reaching base 4 times, including a homer, scoring twice and throwing a runner out at second, helping the Angels gain a game in the AL West with an 8-4 defeat of the Orioles.

Steven Wright pitched 8 dominating innings, allowing 1 run on a solo homer, h hits, 2 walks and struck out 9 Yankee batters to earn the decision for the Red Sox in a 2-1 thriller.

Chris Davis got 2 hits including a 10th inning grand slam that put the Orioles up for good in a 7-3 victory in Oakland.

Matt Harvey threw 7 innings of 2 hit, no walk shutout ball, striking out 6 Miami batters and helping the Mets extend their Division lead with an 8-6 win.

Yasiel Puig hit a 3 run homer and reached base 2 more times to help lead the Dodgers past the Phillies, 4-3.

They all owned baseball on August 5, 2015.

Kris Bryant is about as sure of a prospect there has been in the last 5 years. Will the Cubs let him start the year in 2015, or will they send him down until the end of April to save service time. All you need to know about the franchises desire to win it all this campaign may be based on this decision. The young slugger had 40 HRs in the Minor League’s last year.

Top 100 Prospects

1-30

These are my top 100 prospects in baseball. There is a lot of talent in the minor leagues right now across almost all levels. Yoan Moncada signed after I wrote this but he would slot in the 8th slot right ahead of Joey Gallo and I do believe Moncada will be a stud.

1. Kris Bryant 3B CHC – He will hit for power and hit for a high average at what is an underrated position. He was the 2nd overall pick in 2013 and has the looks of a perennial all star.

2. Carlos Correa SS Hou- He was having a very nice season at the best hitters park in the minors in Lancaster before he broke his leg. I think he can stay at SS with almost all five tools with power rapidly emerging. He’s the future face of the Astros.

3. Corey Seager SS LAD- There are people who think he may get too big for SS and have to transfer to 3B but I think he has much more value at SS and can stick there for at least a few years. He should have an elite bat with plus plus power. Possibly the next Troy Tulowitzki with a slightly worse glove.

1. Chicago Cubs- They are still one of the top systems even with Javier Baez graduating from the list. I love the bats headed by what maybe the top prospect in baseball in Kris Bryant and high end talent in Addisson Russell, Jorge Soler, Kyle Schwarber and Dan Vogelbach.

They also have upside in Albert Almora, Eloy Jimenez and Jeimer Candelario. The pitching on the farm remains the main concern with a wiry C.J .Edwards, a mid ceiling Paul Blackburn and Pierce Johnson and a very far away Carson Sands.

The best farm system in the league that will see some graduates very soon.

2. Minnesota Twins- Last season was unfortunate for the twins and all of major league baseball as Byron Buxton got injured in spring training and Miguel Sano got TJ surgery.

I believe both of them will bounce back with ease and could be close to the major league level. Pitchers J.O Berrios, Alex Meyer and Kohl Stweart have frontline potential with Meyer possibly a candidate to make the rotation out of spring training.

They took Dee Gordons brother Nick in the first round last year and he can be a complete player. There is upside all over in Lewis Thorpe, Felix Jorge, and 50th overall pick Travis Harrison. A very solid farm that can hopefully bear some fruit this season.

Okay, so it is time to ask old Saint Nick, for some help for teams in the MLB to have their wishes come true.

New York Yankees:

Can someone please knock some sense into the brass in the Bronx to realize they are the friggin Yanks? Since we can’t bring the “Boss” back to kick some ass, maybe a losing season would force the team to pilfer the payroll, and believe it or not, if Cashman behaves himself before Spring Training, the club could get under the Luxury Tax Threshold this year with a few Trade Deals, and go an attack the 2016 Free Agent core of Jason Heyward, Jordan Zimmermann, David Price and Johnny Cueto…

Would it be too much to ask if the team could just release Alex Rodriguez? There is no way he should hit his 660th HR in Pinstripes. Release him before that day, or way prior, and don’t pay him that dumb $6 MIL Bonus. He ain’t worth it. The Twins won World Series in 1987 and 1991 based on a great number of Draft Picks. When the team struggled for a decade after the 91 Title, the club used another core of players drafted for another successful run. Now after a 3 year plus hiatus from contention, the club has been stockpiling great talent in the Minors, and maybe ready for another run really soon.

Quite frankly, the Twins Roster Tree for the hitters was pretty uneventful.

The majority of the players were drafted by the team – or signed as a Free Agent. The greatest form of a chain of transactions revolve around Eduardo Escobar.

The Twins Utility Infielder can be traced all the way back to them drafting A.J. Pierzynski. That trade enabled the franchise for a string of Division wins based on the players brought back.

Joe Nathan and Francisco Liriano were key contributors for almost a decade each. Liriano was dealt in 2012 for the Utility Infielder.

Josh Willingham and Kurt Suzuki highlight the club’s Free Agent signings. These guys may be made available for the pending Trade Deadline.

The Twins are an organization that has built within a couple of separate times for lengthy success runs.

In the late 80’s and early 90’s, the franchise parlayed drafts of Kirby Puckett, Kent Hrbek, Gary Gaetti, Frank Viola, Chuck Knoblauch and Scott Erickson into 2 World Series wins. Read the rest of this entry →

Okay, not much has changed in the last month.

They are about 20 unsigned Free Agents left in the open market pool, Baltimore inked Nelson Cruz and Ubaldo Jimenez – and Chris Capuano is with the Red Sox, Paul Maholm replaces him LA for the 2014 campaign.

Of note of the things I am watching in Spring Training. The Dodger Blue is also experiencing many injuries – and Yasiel Puig showed up to camp overweight.

LA is talking about not sending Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke to Australia in a few weeks.

I can understand with the RHP because he was yanked after four pitches last week, but withholding your star ace from the season opener, and possibly the North America starter the following week. Read the rest of this entry →

Hughes was signed to a 3 YRs/24 Million Dollar Contract by the Twins. The 27 Year Old from Mission Viejo, CA has a career record of 56 – 51, with a 4.54 ERA. But you simply have to dig deeper to find out why he has struggled at points in his career. Hughes finished the 2013 season 4 – 14, with a 5.19 ERA, but a lot of that was due to his clip of 1 – 10, and a 6.39 ERA at Yankee Stadium, compared to a 4 – 5, 3.89 on the road.

The Minnesota Twins have decided to join the fight in the AL Central.

Over the course of the last week, they have added two Veteran Starting Pitchers in Ricky Nolasco and Phil Hughes in respective deals.

It is a sign the organization wants to be perched back up atop of the Division with other teams Detroit, and talented young teams in Kansas City and Cleveland.

With the club awaiting some top prospects, just a few years away, the stop – gap measure of a couple of cagey players is a great idea.

The team is also said to be near another deal with former Catcher A.J. Pierzynksi.

Ron Gardenhire and Tom Kelly have been the only 2 men to manage the Twins in the last 27 years. Having stability in the Manager and GM position lends itself for a proper run franchise in terms of on the field success. The Twins will give Gardenhire the chance to rebuild with this club yet again. Stocked with several young prospects, we could the club turn around to be a contender again in the next few years.

The Minnesota Twins have had 3 – 90+ Losses Seasons in a row. This came right on the heels of the franchise having made the playoffs 6 out of 9 years.

All of those Post Season Appearances were made as Division Champions from the AL Central.

The Twins had enough smarts about them to understand where they were in the 1990’s. The management knew the club was better off building within – rather than spending via Free Agency.

From 1993 – 2000, the team never finished better than 4th in the Division they played. The club drafted really high for this time period, and had a nice renaissance by the time 2001 started.

Kevin Correia is, in my mind, the most likely Twin on the move. Not far behind are Morneau, Willingham, and Burton. Correia isn’t the best Starting Pitcher on the market, but he is pitching well and has shown the same ability in the past. He was an All-Star for Pittsburgh in 2011. He has turned out to be a pretty good sign this off-season by the Minnesota.

Our new ‘Lead Baseball Columnist’ Chris Lacey wrote about the Morneau and Willingham Trade Market yesterday here – and it had me thinking who else could be on the block – and my thoughts on those guys?

Much like the last article I wrote on the Chicago Cubs trade candidates, the Minnesota Twins will be in selling mode too as the 2013 trade deadline approaches.

With that being said, the Twins have less selling to do. Twins fans will remember they already did some of that this past offseason.

The Twins have a record of 36-44 just 7.5 Games Back of 1^st place. However they are in 4^th place only ahead of the Chicago White Sox, and it is my belief that is where they will end the 2013 season.

They won’t upgrade their Major League roster via trade this year, but they may add to the talent in their farm system which is growing to be pretty strong.

The Twins had the 4^th ranked farm system at the start of the season according to Baseball Prospectus.

I’m not sure how much to trust the rankings because they have the Yankees ranked above the Red Sox which is laughable in my opinion, but my points stand, they are still in the rebuilding process and are doing well at it.

Sano is the top prospect in the Minnesota Twins organization. Currently at high-A Fort Myers, Sano excels with his power and speed. His fielding could use a little work and his hitting is coming around good. So far he is hitting .387 this year despite a career average of .286 before this campaign. MLB.com has him ranked as the #12 prospect in all of baseball.

The Minnesota Twins have a Minor League farm system with a lot of depth, there is no questioning that. In fact, minorleaguebaseball.com ranked the Twins as having the 7^th best farm system in all of baseball, and that probably isn’t too far off.

They have hitting, pitching, and fielding, the whole 9 yards. The major league club is already great but with this farm system working their way to the majors they will be major contenders in upcoming years.

Before I show you my top 100 prospects – I want to get you familiar with my grading tactics and styles and what I value most. All prospects have ceilings and very few players reach that ceiling. First lets go through the tools of what I personally value most and where.

Tools:

Bat:1
Power:2
Speed:3
Glove:4
Arm:5
Makeup:?

Those are the 5(6) tools that scouts use and the scale goes from 20-80. 80 being HOF rare like Giancarlo Stanton Power and 20 being absolutely terrible like Bengie Molina has 20 speed. Most people reading this will probably have more than 20 speed so that’s how pathetic it is.

The Dominican Winter League had much more talent this offseason than in recent years. From Oscar Taveras to Miguel Tejada, some of the best baseball the DWL has ever seen was played this winter. In particular, four players have made this year’s DWL class a lot of fun. Hector Luna and Bartolo Colon are both MLB veterans trying to prove to their individual teams what they are capable of. Oscar Taveras and Miguel Sano, two of the top prospects in the minors, are trying to make it clear to the scouting world that they are destined for success. These four players provided numerous highlights and were essential to their team’s success during the DWL Regular Season.

Baseball Movie Review: Ballplayer Pelotero

Sam Evans: “Ballplayer: Pelotero” is a documentary that follows two highly regarded Dominican fifteen year-old baseball players. It’s a story of lies, backstabbing, and MLB’s darker side. I highly recommend “Ballplayer: Pelotero” if you’re at all interested in International Free Agency, and how young prospects can get taken advantage of.

The two players shown throughout the film are Miguel Angel Sano and Jean Carlos Batista. Sano is portrayed as an extremely talented fifteen year-old, who comes from a very poor family. As you may know, Sano is now in the Minnesota Twins organization, and he has more raw power than any other player in the minors. Throughout the film, Batista opens up about the death of his father in a dramatic eye-opening fashion. He ends up signing with the Houston Astros, after a major discovery is made by Major League Baseball that alters his signing bonus.
