These 5 Young MLB Players Took a Huge Step Back in 2016

MLB players enter a new year with the best intentions, but this is baseball, and things don’t always go exactly as planned. In fact, they almost never do.

To have a successful regular season and a shot at clinching a playoff berth, managers need production from every corner of their respective rosters. It also helps to get unexpected sources of production, as we touched upon a couple weeks ago.

The following five players have recently shown potential to be a significant contributor at the big-league level. Each of them were expected to be an important piece in 2016, but that didn’t happen. Now, they’ll be looking ahead to 2017 for another opportunity to solidify themselves in the big leagues.

Daily Fantasy MLB DFS Picks For DraftKings 8/6/16

P- Aaron Sanchez (vs. Kansas City Royals): $10,800. Over the last seven games, Kansas City has struggled at the plate. They have a .202 batting average, .251 OBP, and a .300 slugging percentage. Sanchez has been dominant all year long and it shouldn’t be any different on Saturday as he faces this mediocre Royals’ offense.

P- Jose Berrios (vs. Tampa Bay Rays): $7,100. Tampa Bay’s offense has been lackluster in 2016. Berrios has struggled in his rookie season, but he continues to rack up the strikeouts. In 2016, the Rays have struck out 971 times, which is ranked 26th in baseball. Berrios has the potential to put up a huge game on Saturday if he can stay ahead in counts and keep the Rays lineup off balanced.

  1. Alex Reyes (STL, 21 Years Old, RHP): If you are looking for a frontline starter, look no further. Reyes has the upside of a top-10 pitcher in the next few years. He has an elite fastball-breaking ball combination and his changeup has developed quite nicely. He has been known to touch 102-103 MPH with his fastball, so that speaks for itself. He has struggled this season at Triple-A, but that doesn’t take away from his potential. In 55 innings pitched, he owns a 5.07 ERA, 51 hits against, 79 strikeouts, and 27 walks. He has an elite strikeout rate, but his walk rate does scare me. He was just scratched from his most recent start in the minors, so many people believe the Cardinals are preparing to call him up to the big leagues.

What Is Up With Miguel Sano?

The Minnesota Twins are 8 -2 3, a 120-loss pace. If it weren’t for the Atlanta Braves, the Twins would be the worst team in Major League Baseball.  These are the same Twins who finally came into a season with a reason to smile.

The Twins want to be this year’s 2014 Royals and come from nowhere to win the AL Central. They think they have the offense to do it and with Miguel Sano and others, they might be right. But I’m very suspicious about their pitching staff.

Max went on to discuss Ervin Santana and the huge potential range of possible outcomes for their underwhelming pitching staff. Sure, its was always possible for the Twins pitchers to greatly exceed their admittedly average expectations, but it never seemed all that likely.

Well, to this point, they’ve underperformed. The Twins have the worst collective ERA in the American League.  6 of the 8 pitchers who have made at least 1 start have an ERA of at least 4.70.  You don’t get to an 8 – 23 record without “contributions” from the whole roster.

But far more worrisome for the long-term Twins’ plans are their young prospects’ struggles.  Jose Berrios, their top pitching prospect, sports a 6.75 ERA after his first two starts.  Byron Buxton, once the top prospect in all of baseball, has a .497 OPS.  And Miguel Sano, the 23-year old slugger who actually produced in his limited time last year, is 200 points off of his 2015 OPS so far into his sophomore season.

P- Jake Arrieta (vs. Milwaukee Brewers): $13,800. Arrieta has not slowed down since his Cy Young Award-winning season in 2015. Through 4 starts in 2016, he has thrown 31 innings (7.75 innings per game), with a 0.87 ERA, 26 strikeouts, 6 walks, 15 hits given up, and a 4-0 record.

He comes at a very steep price, but he is worth it based on his success this season and the great match-up on Wednesday.  Arrieta is facing a Brewers’ offense who is ranked as the 18th best in run production, 29th in hits, and 25th in strikeouts in Major League Baseball.

Arrieta will exploit this team and should put up at least 20 points on Wednesday. He is averaging 32.3 points per game on Draft Kings this season. He comes at a very steep price, but his point production is worth it.

P- Jose Berrios (vs. Cleveland Indians): $6,900. For those of you who don’t know me, I’m a huge Jose Berrios fan. He will be making his MLB debut against the Cleveland Indians.

Throughout his minor league career, he is averaging 9.5 strikeouts per 9 innings with a 2.91 ERA. Many pitchers are rushed to the bigs, which can hurt their development, but the Twins have taken their time with Berrios.

He is very ready for this step in his career and I think he is a steal at only $6,900. Be aware that they will limit his innings, so don’t expect him to go past 6 innings on Wednesday. Luckily for daily fantasy owners, his strikeout ability should counteract the innings limit.

Five Minor League Prospects Who Will Be Fantasy Baseball Stars In 2016 And Beyond

Trey Rose (Featured BBBA Fantasy Baseball Writer/Owner – dynastydigest.sportsblog.com)

1. Lucas Giolito (RHP; 21 Years Old; Washington Nationals): Giolito is commonly known as the top pitching prospect in the minor leagues. After recovering from Tommy John surgery in 2012, he has done nothing but impress every baseball scout, fan, and especially the Washington Nationals organization.

Since his surgery, he has thrown 261 innings, with a 2.58 ERA, 83 walks (2.9 per nine innings), and 288 strikeouts (9.9 per nine innings). While his numbers are great, his physical projection is what makes him an elite prospect.

Giolotu stands 6’6 and weighs 255 pounds. His body-type projects for a hard fastball, a nasty slider, and an exciting future. He throws his fastball in the mid to high 90’s and compliments that with one of the most elite breaking balls in the minor leagues.

Assuming he can stay healthy, he has the ability to be a top 10 pitcher at his prime. He should get a promotion to the big leagues in 2016, but the Nationals will limit his innings this year as his career high (in 2015) is only 117 innings.

Before you know it, Giolito will be the household name in Washington, not Max Scherzer.
