Let’s see owned baseball on May 3, 2019

Earning Full WOBs:

Kyle Hendricks only needed 81 pitches to toss a complete game, 4 hit, no walk shutout of the Cardinals, giving the Cubs a 4-0 final.

Josh Phegley doubled twice, homered and singled, driving in 8 runs and scoring 2 as the A’s rolled, 14-1, in Pittsburgh.

Trent Thornton threw 7 shutout innings, allowing 1 hit and striking out 5 Rangers. He did not fare in the decision as the Blue Jays won 1-0 in 12 innings.

Steven Vogt came off the bench to single, double and hit a dramatic 2 out, 9th inning homer to tie the game and set up a wild 12-11 come back 11 inning victory in Cincinnati.

Earning 1/2 WOBs:

Derek Dietrich homered twice, added another hit and stole a base. But the Giants made a stunning comeback to beat the Reds in extra innings, 12-11.

Justin Miller stopped the Phillies attack with a pair of shutout innings out of the bullpen. But the Nationals could not rally and lost 4-2.

Mike Minor shutout the Blue Jays over 8 solid innings, striking out 9 along the way. The Rangers bats were dead and dropped the 1-0 game in 12.

Jorge Soler went 3 for 3 with a homer in the Royals 4-3 defeat in Detroit.

This has been the most successful run in Rangers history in the last 4 years.  2 World Series Appearances (albeit losses) – and the club has 4 straight 90+ Win Seasons.

Nolan Ryan envisioned this kind of progress when he anchored the current regime.  While he has left the nest, many of the players have been stocked up in the Minors and Majors.

The Rangers have many young players like Jurickson Profar, Leonys Martin, Martin Perez and Elvis Andrus that are entering their prime.

The greatest job done by the brass was to assemble a pitching unit of homegrown products, as this has kept the teams payroll within reason – even as some of these guys mature. Read the rest of this entry

The Los Angeles Dodgers had a rollercoaster 2013 campaign.  After a late season 2012 trade, the club went on a spending bonanza to enter the 2013 year.

In late May. it looked bleak. The franchise wanted to fire Don Mattingly, Matt Kemp and Hanley Ramirez were battling various injuries, and the club was 23 – 32.

Enter Yasiel Puig with his historic 1st month, and the team then went on a torrid pace at that hadn’t been done in nearly 60 years.

The crux of this crestwave, was a 42 – 8 stretch that saw the club bypass all 4 Division foes, putting a stranglehold on the NL West once and for all.

The Players In All Of The San Diego Padres Organization: Affiliates, Prospects + Depth Charts (MLB + MiLB) Fall 2013

The Padres have not made the playoffs since 2006, and have only authored 2 winning seasons in the last 7 years. It is not from a lack of the coach, rather the NL West has far superior talent, while the San Diego franchise has been trying to replenish the farm, went through an ownership change, and now the team needs to make some decisions this offseason, that will shape the fortunes of the club for the next several years.

The Padres didn’t have very much go right for them in terms of organizational prospects panning out at the Major League Level.

Although, the franchise must be stoked about the development of Andrew Cashner.

Trading away Adrian Gonzalez was tough enough, and right after that, the club flipped Anthony Rizzo to the Cubs, after a sub – par rookie campaign.

The Padres have a tough hoe ahead of them – competing with mega spending Los Angeles will prove very tough considering that team has a payroll in the $230 MIL range, while the ‘Pods’ are not in the $100 MIL range.

Having said that, the team still competed all year, and put up 76 Wins on the board.

They have one of the better skippers in the game with Bud Black.

The key will be the youth of the franchise, as that is how they can keep their payroll down, is to have their top prospects work out, be under team control – much like the way of the Oakland Athletics and Tampa Bay Rays models.

The Nationals were everyone's Preseason favorite to get to the 2013 World Series. A litany of injuries, with a few slumps from some key Veterans - have caused them to only be hovering around .500. They still have a chance to rundown the Atlanta Braves in the NL East if they can put together the kind of winning baseball they put forth during the 2012 campaign. Even if it doesn't come to fruition this year, the club looks solid in the coming years. Only a World Series Championship will forever cement their legacy as a great club.

The Texas Rangers have been the most consistent American League Franchise since Nolan Ryan took over as CEO of the club midway through 2010. They made the World Series in 2010 and 2011 - losing to the St. Louis Cardinals and San Francisco in back to back years. The club has done a great job assembling a Minor League system full of talent - and a great amount of talent via Free Agency.
