Midseason Top 100 MLB Prospect Rankings Analysis (21-30)
Below you can find my analysis for the prospects ranked between 21-30 for the 2016 midseason top prospect list. I will be posting daily analysis of every player listed in the top 100, so please follow my blog and other social media for updates.
- Orlando Arcia (MIL, 21 Years Old, SS): The smooth-fielding shortstop has struggled a little during the 2016 season, but his future remains bright. In 382 plate appearances at Triple-A, Arcia is batting .269, with seven home runs, 44 RBIs, 56 runs, 13 stolen bases, .325 OBP, and a .407 slugging percentage. He still profiles as an above average shortstop in the big leagues, but I’m not convinced he is going to be an elite fantasy baseball player. He has the ceiling to produce 15-20 stolen bases, .270 BA, 10-15 home runs, and a .340 OBP once he reaches the bigs. If he does put up those numbers, I retract my statement about his fantasy baseball value.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (September.16th) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

Alexei Ramirez scored twice in the first inning and reached base five times, homering and missing the cycle by just a triple. He also drove in three as the White Sox embarrassed the Twins, 12-1.
Alex Cobb retired the first 9 batters he faced and gave the Rays 8 strong innings, letting up just 2 runs and striking out 10 Rangers as Tampa Bay finally won a crucial game, 6-2.
Andrew Cashner nearly threw the first no hitter in San Diego Padres history when he held the Pirates hitless for the first six frames. He settled for a 1 hit, 2-0 shutout of Pittsbugh for his first major league complete game.
And Cliff Lee was brilliant on the mound with his 8 inning, 14 strikeout domination of the Marlins. But he is on this list for his bat as he went 3-4 with a triple and 4 RBI, winning the game for the Phillies in every way, 12-2.
They all owned baseball on September 16, 2013.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (September.9th) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

Juan Uribe clubbed 3 of the Dodgers 6 home runs and finished off the night legging out an infield hit, leading the way in Los Angeles’ 8-1 thrashing of the Diamondbacks.
Josmil Pinto continued his hot hitting, smacking 3 doubles and walking, scoring twice and driving in one as the Twins beat the Angels, 6-3.
Chris Sale was outstanding against the Tigers, throwing 8 innings, giving up only 4 hits, 1 walk and 1 run while striking out 8. He got his 11th win, a 5-1 triumph for the White Sox.
Gerrit Cole won a spectacular pitchers duel in Texas by the thinest of margins, throwing 7 shutout innings, winning 1-0 and clinching the Pirates first winning season since 1992. (Yes, I am quite aware of the Nationals/Mets game… the circumstances of the Pirates game was more impressive.)
They all owned baseball on September 9, 2013.

Brandon Moss reached base 5 times, homered twice, scored three times and drove in 6 as the A’s demolished the Tigers in Detroit, 14-4.
Chris Sale struck out 12 Astros, walking only 2 while throwing 8 innings of 4 hit, 1 run ball. He got the decision in the White Sox 6-1 victory.
Jay Bruce led the Reds with a homer and 5 runs batted in as Cincinnati blew out the Cardinals in St. Louis, 10-0.
Ricky Nolasco pitched 8 three hit shutout innings, striking out 11 and walking one as the Dodgers beat the Cubs, 4-0.
They all owned baseball on August 28, 2013.

Chris Herrmann doubled home a run in the first and drove in the winning run in the 8th with another double. He finished 3-5 as the Twins beat the Tigers in Detroit, 7-6.
Jose Tabata went 3-4 with an RBI double, drove in 3 and scored a pair as the Pirates demolished the Giants, 10-5.
Jose Quintana pitched 7 strong innings, letting up only 4 hits, 1 walk and 3 runs, striking out 7. He didn’t get the decision but his strong start set up the White Sox 4-3 12th inning win against the fading Royals.
Mat Latos was wonderful over 8 innings, letting up 1 run and walking none, as the Reds snuck past the Diamondbacks, 2-1.
They all owned baseball on August 22, 2013.

Trade Deadline Wrap – Up: Part I – The Winners

The winners at the trade deadline have something in common. One team used to call Theo Epstein their general manager – and the other currently calls him their President. Both the Red Sox and the Cubs have done a spectacular job at the deadline to meet the needs of their organizations. Boston fully expects to be in a pennant drive for the AL East, so adding a proven Starter like Peavy – is a great insurance move considering the Clay Buchholz injury situation. Unlike last year, the Cubs were able to do some deals with their veterans – to help their team in the future.

July 31, 2013 has come and gone. The non-waiver trade deadline is always one of the more interesting times of the baseball year.
Fans become obsessed with the idea of improving their team’s opportunity to win a World Series, whether it be for the upcoming October or in an attempt to rebuild for future seasons.
The question on everyone’s mind now that the deadline is over: how did your team do at the deadline? Did it get better? Did the organization “win” the transaction and will it translate now or later into more wins on the field?
This will end up invariably being a two-part article because of the depth we need to take to look at these moves. Let’s get right into it with the Winners:
1. Boston Red Sox – The Red Sox are a unique team in that they are concerned both with the current championship window for 2013, but also, a larger window they hope to keep open over the next 3 to 5 years.
In an effort to stabilize their rotation over the next 1 and 1/2 seasons, the Red Sox acquired Jake Peavy from the White Sox. Peavy has pitched very well this season.
His 8.55 K/9 and 1.91 BB/9 are both indicators of an elite level starting pitcher. Peavy is not the same ace that he was during his prime of 2004 through 2007, but his current numbers speak to an adequate No. 1 starter or a very strong No. 2 starter.

As a baseball fan, no matter how bad the team you root for may be, the All-Star Game is the best. As a White Sox fan, I haven’t experienced many really bad seasons in my lifetime. As I’ve written in previous posts, this has not been a good year for my White Sox. And, as a Sox fan, it feels like the sky is falling. Come the ALL-Star break, I try to forget about my team’s struggles, and look forward to the Summer Classic.

So, I’d like to focus on a positive note this time around. Chris Sale. Man is he good.
While young star pitchers like Matt Harvey, Clayton Kershaw, and Stephen Strasburg get a lot of publicity (and rightfully so), Chris Sale doesn’t receive much of the spot light.
And that seems to suit him just fine. Though when the spot light shined its brightest at the MLB All-Star Game last Tuesday night at Citi Field, Sale stepped to the mound for 2 innings of perfect baseball.

The Home Run might be the most exciting aspect of baseball, and this year we have some players who are definitely spoiling us with the shows they have been putting on so far. One of these players is Chris Davis. Davis lead the American League in Home Runs at the All-Star break but he is not the only player who has enjoyed going yard numerous times this season. Who are the best Home Run hitters in the league right now? Here’s my thoughts:

The trade deadline is quickly approaching, and there is very little doubt in the Bronx what the Yankees need. For the first time since 1990, the Yankee offense is one of the worst in baseball. If there is any hope that the Yankees can compete for a playoff spot, the front office has to add pieces to the anemic Yankee lineup. The Bronx Bombers are reeling out of the ALL – Star Break, dropping 3 of 4 – and 5 of their last 7 overall. They need a quick resurgence, as the Rays have won 18 out of 20, while the Orioles have won 5 games in a row to both leapfrog them in the standings. The Yankees begin play today 4.5 Games Behind the Playoff Bar.

The dog days of summer have arrived. Every team has played in excess of 90 games, and the All-Star break has come and gone. At this point, it seems only right that we discuss the Yankees as either buyers or sellers at the trade deadline.
Going into Sunday, the Yankees were 6 games behind the Red Sox for first place and were 8 games over .500, which is good for fourth in the uber-competitive American League East.
Certainly, a playoff spot is still available to the Yankees at this point, and I believe that if you are the Yankees you have to at least examine the market to find what offensive help is available.
The Yankees have pitched well throughout the first half and have both David Phelps and Michael Pineda returning from injury in the next few weeks so the team has enough pitching to get them through the second half and potentially into a playoff spot.
The major issue has been and will continue to be the once vaunted Yankees offense is a shadow of its former self.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (July20th) – Updated Yearly “WOB” Standings
Hanley Ramirez went 3-5 including an RBI double in the 10th that gave the Dodgers the lead for good, topping the Nationals 3-1.
C. J. Wilson pitched shutout ball into the 9th inning, finishing with 8 1/3 innings, no runs and 8 strikeouts as the Angels defeated the A’s, 2-0.
One day after being benched for not hustling, Alex Rios went 3-5 with 5 RBI including a grand slam off of Paul Maholm, leading the White Sox to a 10-6 victory over the Atlanta Braves.
Gio Gonzalez struck out 11 in 6 shutout innings against the Dodgers. He was lifted for a pinch hitter in what was a scoreless tie and did not get the decision in Washington’s 3-1 loss to L.A.
They all owned baseball on July 20th, 2013.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (July.9th) – Updated Yearly “WOB” Standings

Alex Rios tied an American League record with six hits in a 9 inning game, the first 5 against Justin Verlander. Rios also stole a pair of bases and sparked the game winning 8th inning rally as White Sox clubbed their way to an 11-4 win.
James Shields pitched well over 7 innings, giving up only 1 run and 5 hits, winning the game 3-1 for the Royals over the Yankees.
Marlon Byrd broke open a tense, back and forth game against the Giants by blasting an 8th inning grand slam. The Mets prevailed, 10-6.
Wily Peralta threw a complete game shutout against the mighty Cincinnati Reds. He held the defending division champs to 3 hits as the Brewers won a close game, 2-0.
They all owned baseball on July 9th, 2013.

Can Cleveland Keep Pace in the Second Half?

The Cleveland Indians are in second place in the American League Central 3.5 games back of the Detroit Tigers. Jason Kipnis has come out of his shell and is leading the team in Hits, RBI, Average, and On Base Percentage. Kipnis will be an All-Star on July 16th at Citi Field. The pitching is below average ranked throughout the league but for them to keep pace with the Tigers in the second half they will have to pick it up and try to carry the team. Guys like Jimenez, Swisher, Bourn and Kazmir will have to have a great second half for the Indians to make the playoffs. As it sits right now the only way they will make the playoffs is by winning the American League Central and beating the Detroit Tigers.

The Cleveland Indians are three games above .500 but are still 3.5 games behind the first place Detroit Tigers after losing the first two game of the series at home.
New manager Terry Francona has done a great job with this club but he still has a lot more to do in order for them to make the playoffs.
Big names that have produced so far this season are Jason Kipnis and Justin Masterson.
Swisher came over to Cleveland this winter by signing a four-year $56 million contract. The contract includes a fifth year vesting option worth $14 million.
Swisher has given the team a huge boost with his personality but hasn’t produced as much as wanted on the field. Only having 30 RBI has really hurt this club as it has put a lot of pressure on other guys to perform.

The Most Recent No Hitter For Each Franchise

Last season had a flurry of no hitters, ending with Homer Bailey‘s gem that eliminated the Pirates from contention.
This season has been filled with one near miss after another, including close calls from Yu Darvish and Anibal Sanchez. When would the first no hitter of 2013 be thrown?
I guess only Homer Bailey is allowed to throw no-nos now. He threw a gem with only one walk against the punchless Giants and joined the likes of Roy Halladay and Mark Buehrle as a pitcher with multiple no hitters.

Chris Sale allowed only 3 hits over 8 innings, striking out 13. The bullpen prevented him from getting a decision but he set up the White Sox 5-4 walk off win against the Mets.
Rickie Weeks went 3-4 with 2 homers, a double and 4 RBI as the Brewers blasted the Cubs 9-3.
And Kyle Kendrick let up only 2 runs over 8 innings, walking none, as the Phillies came from behind to beat the Padres 6-2.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (June.21) – Updated Yearly “WOB” Standings

Paul Goldschmidt got three hits including a pair of homers as the Diamondbacks won 11-5 over Cincinnati.
Shane Victorino got the Red Sox scoring going with a solo homer . He wound up collecting four hits, driving in five as Boston outlasted the Tigers 10-6.
Héctor Santiago pitched 8 innings letting up 3 hits and 1 run as the White Sox beat the Royals, 9-1.
And Stephen Strasburg threw 7 strong innings against the Colorado Rockies, letting up 1 run, striking out 9 and walking none, getting the win 2-1.
They all owned baseball on June 21st, 2013.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (May.17) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings
Paul Goldschmidt went 4-5 with two homers and four RBI as the Diamondbacks clobbered the Marlins 9-2.
Matt Harvey pitched into the 8th inning and drove in the go ahead run himself as the Mets beat the Cubs 3-2.
Jason Kipnis went 2-4 and hit a walk off 10th inning homer as Cleveland topped Seattle, 6-3.
And Chris Sale pitched 7 2/3 shutout innings in Anaheim, striking out 12, as the White Sox blanked the Angels 3-0.
They all owned baseball on May 17th, 2013

Who Owned Baseball May.12th – Plus Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings
Chris Sale threw the third one hit shutout of the weekend as the White Sox (wearing their wonderfully dreadful 1980’s throwbacks) defeated the Angels 3-0
Jose Bautista homered twice and walked, driving in three runs as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Red Sox in Fenway 12-4.
Marco Scutaro went 2-5 with a homer as the Giants defeated the Braves 5-1.
And Jorge De La Rosa answered the gems pitched by the Cardinals by holding St. Louis hitless into the 7th as the Rockies won 8-2.
They all owned baseball on May 12, 2013
