The journey toward fielding a competitive baseball team can happen in a multitude of ways, but as long as winning is the result, the other details will take care of themselves.
A perfect example of this is what’s going on in Chicago right now with the Cubs and White Sox.
Based on their young roster and improvements made over the winter, the Cubs are a popular pick to win this year’s World Series. Predictions be damned, they still have to go out and prove it.
Even though the season is barely two weeks old, the results have been excellent. Chicago’s National League squad is entering Friday’s game against the Colorado Rockies with an MLB-best 8-1 record.
Meanwhile, the White Sox have seemingly flown under the radar in their own city with an equally impressive 7-2 record. At the moment, they’re tied for first place in the competitive AL Central with the Kansas City Royals.
The schedule is 162 games long for a reason and what happens over the first couple weeks brings no guarantee for the remainder of the year.
Still, it’s interesting to see how these two Chicago teams have taken completely different routes with regard to roster construction and on-field play before seeing similar results through nine games.

Brew Crew + Rays Eliminated From MLB Shutout Survivor 2016 – (19 Teams Left): Cubs/Rangers Step Closer To Win MLB Runs Scoring Survivor 2016
It is no surprise to our website that the Rays are struggling offensively, and were finally knocked out of the Shutout Survivor competition. How does that Infield look now – with Brad Miller and Logan Morrison hit under .100 – and barely hitting the ball at all? We said they lost their 3 best Batting Average players last year (where they still finished 14th in total team offense), and also spoke of the Starting Pitching and Bullpen being overrated – and suffering talent losses as well. We are right thus far, but we will await the rest of the year.

I said it yesterday that last year the clubs were dropping more like flies than this year. Yesterday two more clubs were zeroed off by opponents, and thus eliminated from the MLB Shutout Survivor.
The Brewers were clipped 7 – 0 by Jaime Garcia, and Danny Salazar coupled with some brilliant late inning relief, carved up the Rays for a 6 – 0 bagel. We are still awaiting outcomes for teams that were shutout in Game 8 and Game 9 – as the Tribe is only at 7 games played themselves.
The Padres are clubhouse leaders for Shutouts against for the whole MLB, and are making history in doing so. They are the first club to score jack squat in 5 of their 1st 10 contests. Good news was they played some games at Coors Field last week – or it could have been worse.
Frankly I am amazed this squad lasting so long in this competition with what kind of lineup their putting forth on a daily basis. Milwaukee did start off the 1st 2 series at hitter friendly – Mlller Park. They were handled to the tune of just one hit yesterday in their loss by Jaime Garcia of the Cardinals – who tossed a Complete Game Shutout.
“Stoking The Fire Segment” – Tanaka Will Miss Over A Years Worth Of Work In 7 Year Deal From ‘TJS’ Avoidance
Pitching with a partially torn UCL in his pitching arm since July of 2014, the Yankees and Tanaka’s camp have avoided having Tommy John Surgery thus far, but how far can they go in avoiding the procedure? I also make the point that even if the Yankees ace somehow eludes the injury for the duration of his 7 year contract – that the fans are only seeing him at 85 – 90%. I thought the move was to have TJ Surgery in 2014, and upon returning from it, he would be able to turn it lose like an ace should.

What is better: 5 Years and an average of 200 Innings Thrown, or 6 years of throwing 150 – 165 IP?
The diagnosis of Masahiro Tanaka‘s slightly torn elbow was first disclosed in July of 2014. Had he gone for Tommy John Surgery there for repair, he could be back at full strength right about now in time.
Instead of going ahead with a procedure (that is operating at about an 86% rate of full return for pitchers,) the Japanese born Tanaka has been nursing the injury since the start of the 2015 season.
Having signed a 7 year deal worth $155 MIL – that also included a $20 MIL posting fee, the Yankees were hoping to land an ace that could pivot their rotation from 2014 – 2020.
While it is amazing the man can even throw with this lingering issue, Tanaka authored a great WHIP of 0.994 and a respectable ERA of 3.51 in 24 Game Starts during 2015. Here is the problem though, he missed 2 months of the season when his elbow flared up. Read the rest of this entry

Who Owned Baseball April 14, 2016 (Daily MLB AL/NL Pitcher + Hitter MVP’s) + 2016 #WOB Standings

Jaime Garcia threw a masterful one hit shutout, walking one and striking out 13 Brewers and earned the 7-0 win for St. Louis. (All due respect for Vince Velasquez and his masterpiece.)
Wilson Ramos went 2 for 3 with a homer and a pair of RBI, helping the Nationals keep the Braves winless, 6-2.
Ian Kennedy dominated the Astros with 7 innings of 2 hit, 1 run ball, striking out 7 and earned the 6-2 decision for the World Champion Royals.
Nick Castellanos singled, doubled and homered, driving in 4 and led the Tigers past Pittsburgh, 7-4.
They all owned baseball on April 14, 2016.

P – Zack Greinke (vs. San Diego Padres): $10,000. Greinke will face the San Diego Padres at their home stadium on Friday. Luckily for Greinke, he has dominated the Padres his entire career and the Padres home park is known as a great pitchers park.
In 136 career at bats against Greinke, the Padres offense is hitting .191 with 36 strikeouts. Greinke should get plenty of run support behind him from the DBacks offense to earn him the win on Friday.
P – Garrett Richards (vs. Minnesota Twins): $9,300. Richards will be facing the struggling offense of the Minnesota Twins on Friday. In his only start against the Twins at their field in his career, he threw 8.2 innings, with 7 strikeouts, and 2 earned runs.
Throughout his entire career, the Twins starting lineup has faced him in 48 at bats, totaling a .167 batting average, and 10 strikeouts.
The Twins are currently ranked as the last team in the Major Leagues when it comes to run production (only 13 runs scored in 2016, compared to the second place team with 20 runs), so this could be a great matchup for Richards.

Braves Get Blanked In 8th Straight Loss: 21 Teams Left In 2016 MLB Shutout Survivor + MLB Runs Scoring Survivor Update
The Braves had themselves a bad day as an organization in the District yesterday. Not only the whole Hector Olivera situation, but they fell to 0 – 8, were eliminated from the MLB Shutout Survivor contest, and face Stephen Strasburg today.

So the Braves have 8 straight losses to begin the year (as do the Twins) -but yesterday marked the 1st time they were bageled in those contests. Can either of the Braves or Twins take a run at the 1988 Baltimore Orioles run of 21 straight defeats from the start of a season?
Out of the 9 clubs that been zeroed in the MLB, only 3 have come from the Senior Circuit (Mets, Braves and Padres, but San Diego has seen a donut 4 times on their scoresheet already.)
6 teams have suffered a Shutout in the AL, including the Yankees and Blue Jays – who I thought may have stuck around a long time. Overall shutouts are way down compared to other years. Read the rest of this entry

Who Owned Baseball April 13, 2016 (Daily MLB AL/NL Pitcher + Hitter MVP’s) + 2016 #WOB Standings

Carlos Carrasco threw 8 strong innings, allowing 4 hits and 1 run and earned Cleveland’s 4-1 decision in Tampa Bay.
Jerad Eickhoff struck out 9 Padres over 7 shutout innings, getting a 2-1 victory for the Phillies.
Ryan Goins went 3 for 4 with a run scored and a pair of RBI to help lead the Blue Jays past the Yankees, 7-2.
Nolan Arenado went 4 for 5 and collected 11 total bases, homering twice, driving in 7 and scoring 2 to lead the Rockies 10-6 against the Giants.
They all owned baseball on April 13, 2016.

P- Drew Pomeranz (vs. Philadelphia Phillies) $6,700. I am loving the price of Drew Pomeranz for Thursday. He is facing an offense who is not potent by any means and he has shown a small sample size of success against the Phillies throughout his career.
In only 16 at bats total, he is holding the Phillies to a .188 opposing batting average and 3 strikeouts. I know that isn’t a lot of history, but it’s some success. During his first start of the 2016 season, he threw 5 innings giving up 2 earned runs, walking 3, and striking out 7 at Colorado, which isn’t an easy place to pitch.
I love his K rate, but he must throw 6 to 7 innings to be a big asset on Thursday.
P- Ervin Santana (vs. Chicago White Sox) $8,100. Ervin Santana has dominated the Chicago White Sox lineup throughout his career. In 110 career at bats, the White Sox lineup is only hitting .182 against him with 22 strikeouts.
I expect another strong outing from Santana against a team who he has had no trouble with in the past.
C- Jose Lobaton (vs. Julio Teheran) In 15 career at bats against Teheran, Lobaton is hitting .467 with 2 home runs, 5 RBI’s, 3 XBH, and a .556 OBP. I love Lobaton as a cheap option assuming he starts.
Make sure to follow this game as there is a chance Lobaton doesn’t start considering he is the backup to Wilson Ramos. If he does, he could be a bargain buy at this price.

M’s Get Blanked: 22 Teams Left In 2016 MLB Shutout Survivor + MLB Runs Scoring Survivor Update
The Mariners were blanked last night 8 – 0. Seattle is now 0 – 5 at home, and can’t buy any hits on home turf. 7 runs in 5 games is not the way to start your campaign at Safeco Field. This is not foreign territory for the Mariners, who routinely have the worst batting numbers at home every year. Playing games versus AL West counterparts the A’s and Rangers – they have posted just an .486 OPS while at home in 2016.

A quick start by Robinson Cano has quickly faded into a Batting Average of .182. Dae-Hoo Lee and Adam Lind have collected just 3 hits in the eight total contests thus far.
Kyle Seager and Ketel Marte have provided little punch from the Left side of the infield. I expect Seager to turn himself around, but I was one to always question why the franchise didn’t go outside the squad to bring in a new veteran shortstop.
Both clubs were eliminated from MLB Shutout Survivor, and must get their lineups back in order, or they will also fall way back in MLB Runs Scoring Survivor too, having picked off all of the low run scoring totals.
The Padres were blanked for a 4th time in 8 games, and still only have 3 different variations on their season. This is tied with Tampa and Detroit for the fewest marks off the scoresheet, but they have played one more game than the Rays and 2 more contests than the Tigers, so they are ranked 30th in this competition.
Chicago continues to lead the movement to all 11 runs scored scenarios, with having plated a different amount of guys in every single game thus far. All they need to complete this competition are run totals of 0, 1, 3 and 8.
Oakland, Texas, Arizona and Colorado have 6 out of the 11 run totals, but they all need to knock off some of the higher totals – unlike the Cubs. Read the rest of this entry

Who Owned Baseball April 12, 2016 (Daily MLB AL/NL Pitcher + Hitter MVP’s) + 2016 #WOB Standings

Charlie Morton pitched shutout ball into the 7th, finishing 6 2/3 innings, 3 hits and 7 strikeouts, getting the 3-0 decision for Philadelphia over San Diego.
Trevor Brown continued his surprising power surge with a pair of homers and 4 RBI to lead the Giants to a 7-2 victory in Colorado.
Derek Holland gave the Rangers 6 2/3 shutout innings, allowing 4 hits and striking out 4 in the 8-0 blowout in Seattle.
Justin Upton went 4 for 5 with a homer, 2 RBI and 3 runs scored in the Tigers 8-2 win over Pittsburgh.
They all owned baseball on April 12, 2016.

P- Phil Hughes (vs. Chicago White Sox) $7,300. Today I went with two mid-tier pitchers rather than paying an elite price for an elite arm.
Carlos Carrasco vs. Tampa Bay was the only arm that really appealed to me above Hughes and Lackey, but I rather take a price cut with Hughes and spend my money on my offense.
In 173 career at bats against Hughes, the White Sox offense is hitting .272 against him with 4 home runs, 11 RBI’s, and 36 strikeouts. I think these numbers point in Hughes’ favor, so I’ll stick with him today.
P- John Lackey (vs. Cincinnati Reds) $8,300. Lackey has dominated the Reds lineup throughout his career. In 101 total at bats, the Reds lineup is only hitting .228 against Lackey with 2 home runs, and 18 strikeouts.
Lackey is pitching at home for the first time, which should bring about lots of energy and excitement.
On another note, his run support should be plenty to get the win over the Reds, which will help contribute to his point total.

2016’s 30 MLB Park Home Openers Results: Fans Go Home Disappointed 19 Times
Best home win for all 30 clubs in winning 10 – 1 over the Milwaukee Brewers Monday Apr 11, 2016 9 runs difference was the best run differential for the home clubs.

It was a bad year for the home clubs in MLB Season Openers in 2016. The road clubs won 19 of the 30 MLB Park openers. The worst defeat was at Petco Park (where the Padres lost 15 – 0).
The Cardinals featured the best win for the home side, working over the Brewers for a 10 – 1 win yesterday.
Of note, it was the last home park openers for David Ortiz and the great Vin Scully announced the lineup for his last Dodger Stadium opener, in what was the 30th home opener on the itinerary.
The American League went 5 – 10 and the National League went 6 – 9.
Baltimore, San Francisco, Chicago Cubs and Detroit were the only four clubs that won openers, that also won another home opener to which they were on the road.
The Cardinals had the most lopsided win at home winning 10 – 1, the Giants scored the most runs with 12, and the biggest loss and defeat for a home squad, was San Diego being bageled 15 – 0 by the Dodgers in Game 1 at Petco, in what turned out to be a 3 game home series where they were shutout in all games and outscored 25 – 0.
To end the stats here, the NL Central was the only winning division at 4 – 1, where the Brewers lost the only contest at Miller Park to the Giants.

You’ve already heard this news I’m sure and we all (at least I did) completely saw it coming. Felix Doubront, who was named the Oakland A’s fifth starter in late March, couldn’t even make it through his first exhibition game against the Giants.
The now-interim fifth starter (perhaps permanent, we don’t know!) Eric Surkamp came into the game, pitching seven scoreless innings and helped the A’s win that ballgame.
It was an exhibition game but to hold that San Francisco Giants’ potent offense, keep them from scoring and secure an Athletics’ victory over a despised rival is a pretty big deal.

It was pretty obvious, the outcome off Felix Doubront’s injury. He left the game with forearm soreness ( Tommy John surgery sign number one). He had an MRI (sign number two). Got the doctor’s opinion and decided to seek a second opinion (sign number three and the nail in the coffin of the diagnosis of a torn ulnar collateral ligament and the inevitable, Tommy John surgery).

Milwaukee Brewers – What We Learned In Week 1 Of 2016
New Milwaukee GM David Stearns has his hands full trying to compete in the NL Central for the next several seasons. Really the club should be starting a full scale rebuild that includes trading Ryan Braun. Jonathan Lucroy and potentially Wily Peralta. With dealing with the Cubs, Cards and Bucs all in the NL Central, expect a 100 loss season coming forth for the club. This squad split their 1st 6 game homestand with after being blistered by the Giants, Milwaukee took 2 out of 3 in Interleague play versus the Houston Astros.

With one week in the books, let’s take a look at what Milwaukee Brewers fans have learned so far.
This isn’t last year’s team. GM David Stearns ran off nine trades that netted 16 players after taking the job last year. Stearns has repeatedly said he’s looking to stock up on pitchers – not just arms – but pitchers that throw strikes and get ahead in the count. Stearns also feels the Brewers outfield has a lot of depth and is an area of strength. So if this isn’t the 2015 team that went 68-94, then what can fans expect?

Nats Need Stellar Years From Scherzer/Strasburg Similar To Johnson/Schilling Duo In 2001 – To Win The World Series
Max Scherzer was filthy in the 1st half of 2015 – with a 2.11 ERA heading up to the ALL – Star Break, and Stephen Strasburg ended the 2nd half of the year with a 1.90 in his Post ALL – Star games. If these 2 day aces can be in top form for the whole year, and then carry through to the playoffs, it would go a long with their chances to win a World Series. Since Jordan Zimmermann and Doug Fister left, the rotation is not as deep as it once was, yet these guys could make for an unforgettable 1 -2 punch in the postseason, and combined with Bryce Harper, potentially win the Fall Classic this year.

With Zack Greinke flying the coop in Los Angeles over the winter, all of a sudden, this dynamic pair of Nationals chuckers should be the best back to back starting tandem in the Majors right now.
It is a walk year for Stephen Strasburg. He has shown flashes of brilliance, but has yet to put it together for the whole year. You could say his career has kind of been like Schilling’s prior to his arrival in Arizona.
I think both guys could near 20 wins each. have mid 2 ERA’s – and both compete against the NL’s elite for the NL Cy Young Award.
If they have great seasons, it should equal a playoff berth – and if not the NL East Division. Strasburg’s best two years were in 2012 and 2014, so maybe he is just a better even year pitcher himself.
Scherzer is 53 – 20 with a near 1.00 WHIP and ERA of 3 since the start of the 2013 season. No doubt these 2 guys will pull up awesome numbers in playing the Marlins, Phillies and Braves for almost 40% of their total games. Add in the Brewers, Reds, Padres, Rockies to the fold, and that becomes half of the year.
Should Washington make the playoffs, that is exactly why they doled out $210 over 7 years for Scherzer in the first place. The former Tigers pitcher was pretty damn good in the 1st RD of the postseason for Detroit, going 3 – 1, with an ERA of 2.79 and WHIP of 1.034 in 29 Innings worth of work in the LDS rounds. I think he could take the next step beyond that.
Last year Scherzer threw 2 no-hitters and nearly tossed 2 more. He has shown he can last longer than ever before. He was a workhorse with his 228.2 IP. It was a career high, just like his 276 Strikeouts in that timeframe and his incredible WHIP of 0.918 were.
It is time to for Strasburg to leave it all on the table. Much like his 34 Game Starts in 2014, where he logged 215 Innings and a NL Leading 242 Strikeouts, the former #1 overall pick could really make a fortune in Free Agency with a banner year. Chris Davis drove in five between his two hits, including a three run homer with 2 outs in the 9th to lead the Orioles to a 9-7 win in Boston.
Jeremy Hazelbaker went 4 for 4 with a double and a triple, scoring a run and driving in another to help the Cardinals top the Brewers, 10-1.
Collin McHugh threw 7 shutout innings, allowing 8 hits and 1 walk to lead the Astros past the Royals, 8-2.
Michael Wacha struck out seven Brewers in six shutout innings to lead the Cardinals to a 10-1 final.
They all owned baseball on April 11, 2016.

Odds To Win The 2016 MLB World Series
The Tigers had a nice week of 3 – 1 to start the year. Miguel Cabrera and he offense looked good. The Starting Pitching was given a massive lift with Jordan Zimmermann doling out a Shutout on the Comerica Park opener Friday. In a competitive AL Central, the Motown Boys should still be in contention for a playoff spot all year, and be given respect. Instead, clubs are ahead of them in the AL that shouldn’t be. At +2200 they are a bargain. They are the best bet on the board this week. Having them ranked tied for 14th right now is not where I would put them at.

After the 1st week of action the gamblers have spoken. The Cubs are solidifying their status as the favorite. Despite a slow week – the Jays are still tied with the Royals for the favorites in the Junior Circuit.
They finally have pegged KC at the right mark. In fact, I have no problem with the top 5 odds listed at all.
The first place I have found value is with the Nationals. They went 3 – 1 in the 1st week. and will throw both Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg 2 times each this week versus the Braves ( 4 game series) and Phillies (3 game series). I could see this team winning at least 5 games, which would put them at 8 – 3 or better after next Sunday. Bet them now before their odd jumps to +800.
To begin the year the NL East was rail thin in difference. and with Washington jumping out to a bit better of a start than New York – coupled with the cupcake schedule this week. they are a great value on the board.
Detroit is going to my favorite selection of the week. They win 3 of 4 games, have solid offense – and yet maintain their same odd from last week, when all of the AL West clubs did not have a winning record except for the A’s, and the AL Central and AL East had the usual culprits only playing okay (in addition to Baltimore).
While I received better value at betting the O’s to win the American League Pennant in my preseason picks (At +2800, which is now what they are listed at for the World Series following their 5 – 0 start.) Listen I am happy I made those picks, and the ALCS win was the way to go versus the +5000 bet they had – as I think all AL clubs would be underdogs in the Fall Classic against the top 5 favorites. The Jays won a critical AL Divisional game versus the Red Sox to salvage their weekend – but also knock out one of the favorites not to be shutout before all other clubs. Marco Estrada frustrated and stymied the Beantowers at the Rogers Centre.
With plenty of clubs having not played 5 games yet, Boston could finish higher than 23rd still, if those other clubs get walloped more than 3 – donut.
In MLB Runs Scoring Survivor, the Cubs picked off their 7th variations, and could be the 1st club to complete once they hit games where they score 8, 5, 3, 1 and 0 runs. Perhaps the zero may be the toughest total to reel in for them.
There is a huge logjam at tied for 2nd with 5/11 variations. Washington has only played 4 games, so you will have to forgive them for their low 2 different variations.
The Padres have completed 6 games this year. were shout 3 times to start the season, then scored 16 and 13 runs right after, and then finally place a number between 1 and 9 runs yesterday with 3.
We will take the amount of games played as the factor in determining who wins, so even if a club finishes 1st – all others would have to have passed the mark for them to be deemed the winner. Tiebreakers will go to the clubs who scored the must runs on their final variation. If there is still a tie, the standings for Runs Per Game (in the MLB) will be the next tiebreaker. Who Owned Baseball April 10, 2016 (Daily AL/NL Pitcher + Hitter MVP’s) + 2016 #WOB Standings

Manny Machado went 4 for 4 including a homer and 2 RBI, propelling the Orioles into a 5-3 win over Tampa Bay to continue their perfect start.
Brandon Belt got on three times, including a game tying homer, and drive in three as the Giants took a wild 9-6 game from Los Angeles.
Marco Estrada shut down Boston’s offense with seven scoreless innings, striking out 8 and allowing just 5 hits as Toronto salvaged the final game of the series, 3-0.
Joe Ross threw seven solid innings, allowing 1 run, 5 hits and 2 walks, earning Washington’s 4-2 decision over Miami.
They all owned baseball on April 10, 2016.
