Nobody better come within 10 feet of Arizona Diamondbacks 1st Baseman Paul Goldschmidt because he is on complete fire. In the last weeks
With apologies to the slugging duo of Troy Tulowitzki and Carlos Gonzalez of the Rockies, or Reds teammates Brandon Phillips and Joey Votto, based on the last week of play – Goldchmidt has cruised to the best player in the National League so far in 2013.
What is even better is that he is doing this act solo. Sure he is being helped by Gerardo Parra, Didi Gregorius, and a cast of other Diamonbacks players, but for the most part, the 25 Year Old is carrying the Arizona club to 1st place in the NL West
There is one thing that all successful baseball teams have in common, and that is they have one player in their line up that strikes fear into the heart of opposing teams.

When you think of players that can do this, the first couple of names that comes to mind are Miguel Cabrera of the Detroit Tigers and Joey Votto of the Cincinnati Reds.
The reason they are so dangerous is that opposing pitchers have to be perfect with every pitch that is thrown to them. They make one mistake, and that could mean the difference between winning and losing a game.
The Arizona Diamondbacks have that player in first baseman Paul Goldschmidt. The one thing that he showed in his career in the minors was that he could hit for power, as indicated by his 83 HRs through three seasons in the Diamondbacks farm system.
The one concern as with most young players that show the ability to drive the ball is their propensity to strikeout. Goldschmidt did strikeout 130 times last season, and that was expected with opposing pitchers learning how to attack him.
The thing that separates good players from great players is that they learn to adjust. He has made the giant leap from a player that has potential, to someone that can be a perennial All-Star and MVP candidate for years to come.
The one area where his game has improved is his pitch recognition at the plate. The thing that sets him apart from other power hitters in baseball is his willingness to take pitches and draw walks. Another quality he possesses is that he takes what the opposing pitcher will give him, and does not try to do too much.
Arizona has had to deal with numerous injuries to key players this season, and other players have started off slow for them. The one constant is the performance of Goldschmidt this season, as indicated by his .332/.411/1.021 triple-slash. He performs even better when there are runners in scoring position, with a .439/.478/1.407 triple-slash.
