Who Owned Baseball Yesterday – (July 2nd) – Updated Yearly “WOB” Standings

Homer Bailey threw the first no hitter of the season, holding the Giants to a single run as the Reds won, 3-0.
John Lackey pitched 8 solid innings, letting up a single run, leading the Red Sox to a 4-1 victory over the Padres at Fenway.
Kendrys Morales helped knock the Rangers out of first place by getting three hits, including a pair of homers, driving in 6 as the Mariners prevailed, 9-2.
Yasiel Puig, the man who SHOULD be an All Star, had another remarkable game. He was a triple shy of the cycle, homering and doubling in the Dodgers 8-0 win against the Rockies.
They all owned baseball on July 2nd, 2013.

Dodgers’ Yasiel Puig has been on fire ever since he joined the big club. He is hitting for a 3 Slash Line of .436 with 7 HRs and RBIs through his first 27 games. His 44 Hits collected in the 1st month of his career is 2nd All – Time to the great Joe Dimaggio. There is no doubt that the Cuban Player is one of the best 7 or 8 OF in the National League right now – and it would be blasphemy if he is not given the right to put into the Mid – Summers Classic!

There is no doubt about it, Dodgers’ OF Yasiel Puig has been all over the sports media – and rightfully so.
Puig has only played in 27 games and he is batting an excellent .436 with 7 HRs and 16 RBIs.
The Dodgers are 15-11 during that stretch including 8-2 in their last 10 games.
Puig doesn’t seem like he’s ready to cool off as he has a 5 game hitting streak including a 4 for 5 game against the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday June. 30.

David Lough went 4-4, including three doubles, four runs scored, three RBI and a go ahead 8th inning home run leading the Royals to a wild 9-8 win in Minnesota.
Justin Masterson pitched the Indians into a virtual tie with the Tigers as he tossed a masterful 6 hit shutout of the White Sox, 4-0.
Madison Bumgarner gave the Giants 7 innings letting up only 4 hits and 1 run as the champs halted a six game slide with a 5-2 win over the Rockies.
Yasiel Puig was a home run shy of the cycle, finishing 4-5 and scoring a pair as the Dodgers made quick work of the Phillies, 6-1.They all owned baseball on June 30th, 2013.

The Bucs have won 9 straight games and now possess a record of 51 – 30. You have to think that the club will finally put the nail in the coffin on its 20 year losing streak – with just needing to win 31 of their 81 games remaining. Better yet, ESPN has them listed as a 88 Percent chance to make the playoffs for the first time since the 1992 season. At the halfway point in the season, the Bucs have the best record in the MLB – and have reached #2 in our power rankings.

Lost among the outstanding debuts MLB rookies like Yasiel Puig and Gerrit Cole has been the terrific play of the Mariners new second baseman Nick Franklin. Franklin has hit for power, played nearly flawless defense, and he’s demonstrated
his fantastic plate discipline. However, most of the baseball world has seemingly looked past what Franklin has done for the Mariners. It’s been quite a while since a shortstop comparable to Franklin has been promoted to the Majors and excelled right away.
Here’s a glance at what Franklin has done for the Mariners, what kind of a player he’ll be in the future, and what role he plays in the Mariners future.

Yasiel Puig hit a first inning home run and then broke a 1-1- tie in the 8th with an RBI single as the Dodgers topped the Giants 3-1.
Cliff Lee pitched shutout ball into the 9th inning and was brilliant against San Diego. Unfortunately for him, closer Jonathan Papelbon imploded, letting the Padres tie the game in the 9th. San Diego would win it 4-3 in extra innings.
Michael Brantley hit a 2 run, go ahead single in the 6th inning and then padded the lead with a 2 run homer in the 8th inning to lead Cleveland past Baltimore, 5-2. with a homer and four runs batted in including a two run shot in the second inning as the Blue Jays clobbered the Orioles 13-5.
And Jeremy Hellickson pitched seven brilliant 1 hit innings to stop Toronto’s 11 game winning streak and was credited with the win in Tampa Bay’s 4-1 decision.
They all owned baseball on June 24th, 2013.

The Yankees find themselves in the unfamiliar territory of having to rely on younger players to get the team back to the post-season. Hopefully, the youth movement in the Bronx can help keep the Yankees competitive. Almonte, Adams and Romine, who is exactly are these guys? 3 guys whom have seen regular duty in the lineup over the last few weeks. The Yankees managed to take the 1st 2 games of their weekend series with Tampa before losing the series finale on Sunday. At 41 – 34, they start play today at 2.5 Games Behind the Boston Red Sox in the AL East. A Division in which all teams are over .500.

As I sit here typing this, I feel a bit out of my element. My own life has been very much a roller coaster of late. I’m in the process of moving out of a place I’ve called home for the last four years. I’ve been traveling for most of the month, and generally, I feel about as out of touch with the Yankees as I have in quite a long time.
After preaching patience to Yankee fans everywhere over the last several months, its become abundantly clear that those All-Stars I’ve been waiting on to carry the team back to October may not show up. Mark Teixeira is back on the Disabled List with his bothersome wrist. Curtis Granderson just had pins removed from his hand and has yet to take a rehab swing.
Kevin Youkilis‘ back may end his career. Alex Rodriguez, well, is actually putting on a show in rehab, but god only knows if and when he will face the wrath of Major League Baseball for whatever role he played in this Biogenesis noise. 2013 was supposed to be the final ride of this Yankees group with the serious regrowing pains coming in 2014 and beyond.
In addition to the absolutely atrocious injuries, the glass slipper has shattered for the replacement Yankees, who carried the team through April. Vernon Wells, the most notable of the slumping replacements, has given the team little to no reason to continue to give him run.
After writing several pieces begging for patience and instructing fans to embrace Wells, I will admit to having a bit of mud on my face. Wells is what most people thought he was. An expensive piece with just enough left in his bat to give you a bit of hope. I was hoping for a 1-2 WAR player out of Wells. It is official. I am (and/or was) delusional.

Yasiel Puig wowed the crowd in New York by combining for a 4-9 performance in the Dodgers double header with the Yankees. He homered, reached on a bunt single and nearly threw a man out at first from right field as L.A. split the two games.
Chris Davis homered twice, pushing his big league leading total to 26 and he drove in 5 runs as the Orioles demolished Rick Porcello and the Tigers, 13-3.
Gio Gonzalez pitched 7 innings, letting up only 2 hits and striking out 11, setting up the Nationals extra inning victory over the Phillies, 6-2.
And C. J. Wilson threw seven shutout innings, letting up only 2 hits as the Angels snuck past the Mariners 1-0.
They all owned baseball on June 19th, 2013.

The Dodgers don’t lead the Majors in many categories this year (except for Bench clearing brawls). The 1st incident with the Padres cost them Greinke with a broken clavicle. He will likely be suspended for more games. Who else will be suspended?? We should find out from baseball today. Meanwhile the team is 28 – 37 – and 11 Games behind Arizona.
It is time to call it like it is – and back it up with some cold hard facts. As a former professional oddsmaker, I understand why the ESPN page lists the Blue Jays at a 2.8% chance to make the playoffs – and the Dodgers just slightly better at 2.9%.
The math involved is not even as complicated as Sabermetrics. I will show you how they have derived this notion. The fanbases will always tell you that they are one big winning streak away from jumping back into the mix.
They would be right some of the time (Note the 2007 and 2009 Rockies, the 2012 Athletics, the 2011 Cardinals and Rays also made up around 10 Games deficits for playoff spots even in September).
I can also think of the 2005 Astros flying off the wall in the second half to earn a playoff spot.
Here is why these two teams are deep trouble.

Cuban Outfielder Yasiel Puig was called up on June 2, 2013. As of June 7, 2013 the 22 year old has hit 4 HRs including a two HRs on his on just his second day in the office.
When the Dodgers called up Cuban Outfielder Yasiel Puig on June 2, 2013, it was expected to be one of the most anticipated debuts by a young outfielder since Bryce Harper.
Considering the money the Dodgers have spent to bring him to the United States ($42 million for 7 years), he has definitely not disappointed – and has even brought memories of a somewhat recent player that electrified Dodger Stadium in a very short amount of time. Of course, that player being Manny Ramirez.
In Puig’s debut, a game against the San Diego Padres, Puig went 2 for 4 but what really stole the show was a play he did in the track in right field when he threw Chris Denorfia out at first base…ending the game.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (June 6th) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings
Yasiel Puig continues to dazzle as his grand slam help put the Braves away in the Dodgers 5-0 victory.
Zack Greinke threw 7 shutout innings in that game to beat the Braves.
Adam Rosales doubled and hit a game winning homer as the Oakland A’s beat the White Sox in Chicago, 5-4 in 10 innings.

Domonic Brown remains hotter than a pistol, and it is almost a surprise when he doesn’t hit a HR these days. In his last 13 Games Played, the man from Stone Mountain, Georgia is batting .400 (20 – 50), with 10 HRs, 1 – 3B and 1 – 2B and 19 RBI. His Slugging Percentage is 1.060 and his OPS is 1.494 – while actually having Walked 3 times in the last week. A slight adjustment of moving closer to the plate – and inviting the inside pitch to turn on – is credited for the remarkable turnaround. He was recently named MLB Reports Player Of The Month.

The Phillies arrived in Milwaukee last night having won their previous four games by scoring seven runs in each of the first three games during this streak and finished the home stand with a six-run outburst on Wednesday afternoon.
Tack on another five runs in last night’s solid win over the Brewers and we have ourselves an offense that is officially getting hot in five consecutive wins.
But it’s not just the bats talking the talk, the Phillies are finally walking the walk to the tune of 37 free passes in their last 10 games. That’s 16 more walks drawn than in the previous 10 contests.
Setting the table for the meat of the lineup has been Jimmy Rollins, who has drawn 11 bases on balls in that same period along with Ryan Howard strolling for five.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (June 4th) – Updated Yearly “WOB” Standings
Prince Fielder drove in 4 runs in three different rallies as the Tigers wiped away an early deficit, took the lead and eventually blew out the Rays, 10-1. Fielder went 3-4 with a homer.
David Phelps pitched 6 innings of 1 hit shutout ball, striking out 7 as the Yankees topped the Indians, 4-3.
Josh Collmenter pitched 4 innings of shutout relief, all after the 10th inning on the road. Each pitch he threw to the St. Louis Cardinals could have lost the game. He had base runners in every inning and yet wiggled out of trouble and the Diamondbacks won in 14, 7-6.
And thanks to his two homer, three hit and 5 RBI day, Yasiel Puig has owned baseball every game he has played as the Dodgers came from behind to beat the Padres, 9-7.
They all owned baseball on June 4th, 2013.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (June 3rd) – Updated Yearly “WOB” Standings

Coco Crisp led off the game with a homer and got on base 5 times while going 4-5 in the A’s 10-2 thrashing of the Milwaukee Brewers.
Erik Bedard earned his first win of the year, going 7 innings letting up only one run and 5 hits (none by Albert Pujols) as the Astros finished their shocking 4 game sweep of the Angels in Anaheim.
Bronson Arroyo threw 8 shutout innings , letting up 4 hits and walking none as the Reds beat the Rockies 3-0.
And in his spectacular big league debut, Yasiel Puig led off with a hit, collected another hit and ended the game with a spectacular double play, throwing firing to first after a catch in the outfield to double off the runner and seal the much needed 2-1 victory over the Padres.
They all owned baseball on June 3rd, 2013.

Miguel Cabrera is absolutely unconscious this season so far; He has a 3 Slash Line of .369 (Leads AL)/.445 (Leads AL/1.121 (2nd in AL), with 17 HRs (2nd AL) and a mind – blowing 65 RBI through 54 Games Played. He is on pace for 51 HRs, 195 RBI and about 250 Hits. He keeps getting better every single year if possible. Despite his prominence – and a lineup full of ALL – Star hitters and Pitchers, the Tigers are limping along at just a few games over .500. It certainly isn’t this 30 Year Old’s fault.

The Detroit Tigers were second on the list for moving up rankings with 5 spots. They have overtaken the Indians in the AL Central – and have 5 players that are hitting north of .300. Their top 4 Starters may be the best in the game – and they play in an extremely winnable division where teams can`t match them for payroll or talent. Miguel Cabrera is the best hitter on the planet – and has great support.

The Oakland Athletics are making another run at the expense of the lesser lites in the Division. This team feasts on the Astros and Mariners – and are not half bad at playing the Rangers and Angels either. The goal for them is to continue to pitch. They must try to at least take 2 games versus San Francisco in the 4 game set.
The Kansas City Royals may have rolled up snake eyes in gambling on their 2013 season. Suffering the longest playoff drought in the majors at 28 years, the franchise traded away its best prospect player in Wil Myers for a 2 year pitching solution in James Shields.
The problem is that their nucleus of young talented hitters have failed them. Eric Hosmer and Mike Moustakas are being outpowered by some teams Pitching cores in the NL.
