Johnny Cueto shut down the Giants bats, pitching into the 9th inning and finishing with 8 1/3 innings of 3 hit ball as the Reds won 6-2.

Mike Leake was masterful with 8 innings of 4 hit, 1 run, 12 strikeout ball. He walked only one Giant and earned the 3-1 decision for Cincinnati.
Rick Porcello threw the first complete game shutout of his career, letting up just 3 hits and walked just three Rangers as Detroit won 6-0.

Oh yeah..this club has back to back West Titles, and a deep lineup in a parity league that is the AL. While I don’t endorse them as the favorite for the World Series right now (based on predicting playoffs solely), there is no doubt I ranked them #1 in power rankings

Yoenis Cespedes has the power numbers to be a perfect complement to the top guys, and the bar can always be raised higher.
Sean Doolittle is authoring one of the greatest Bullpen efforts ever for a Closer. A 53/1 Strikeout to Walk ratio is beyond filthy.

Tim Lincecum became the second pitcher in Giants history to throw two no hitters, pitching a 4-0 masterpiece against the San Diego Padres.
David Price threw a shutout into the 9th, finished with 8 1/3 innings, 1 run on 5 hits while striking out 11 Pirates, earning the 5-1 win in Tampa Bay.
Scooter Gennett got a pair of hits, scored a pair of runs and drove in 5, thanks in part to his grand slam, as the Brewers clobbered the Nationals, 9-2.
Michael Brantley got on base 3 times including a pair of triples, scoring twice and driving in a pair and helping Cleveland top the Diamondbacks, 6-1.

John Lackey pitched 9 shutout innings, allowing just 3 hits, 1 walk and struck out 9 Twins. He got a no decision as the game went into extra innings, but the Red Sox walked off as 2-1 winners.
Starlin Castro went 3-5 with a pair of doubles, drove in a pair and scored twice, leading the Cubs past the Marlins, 6-1.
Brian McCann homered, tripled and drove in 5 runs as the Yankees beat the first place Blue Jays, 7-3.

Analysis: I fully expect the Baltimore Orioles to be involved in trade talks to land an ace pitcher, with using either Kevin Gausman or Dylan Bundy as bait. This year represents the teams best chance to win.
If the Yankees fall out of it, they will drop under the $189 MIL Luxury Tax Threshold, by jettisoning players, and will then sign everyone in the offseason with a fresh slate for a salary tax 1st time offense at only 17.5% – instead of a 50% clip now
The X factors are if Chris Davis can find his 2013 swing, and Ubaldo Jimenez remembers how to throw like his 2nd half 2013 self. Toronto has enough bashers to club their way to the Division Title, and their -133 is not a bad odd either to wager on.

The San Fran players are using the ‘someone is always on fire’ offense. Even Brandon Hicks is clobbering HRs out of 2B. Depth prevails here. 4 Games up on the Dodgers.
2. ***Oakland Athletics 31 – 20 (2) 8 – 5: The A’s did lose 3 straight to the Blue Jays, however they had scored 76 runs in 11 Games prior, and pasted 10 on the board yesterday.
Brandon Moss is an underrated slugger, and Josh Donaldson has 4 separate game HR streaks this year.

The Cardinals Struggles In 2014 So Far Might Point To Accumulation Of Roster Changes Since 2011
After St. Louis won the 2011 World Series, they lost their world class 1B Free Agent player in Albert Pujols. It was the right move (10 YRs/$250 MIL is too much), and Michael Wacha was the compensation pick, so one wouldn’t even make the trade for the Cardinals former legend. However much like the Mariners in the late 90’s lost Johnson, Griffey and Rodriguez, that team had a league record 116 wins in 2001. The Cards have back to back NLCS Appearances, and lost the World Series in 2013, however despite being chalked with young talent, is that they still have lost several key components to their team in the last 3 years. Somewhere the franchise might have to slow down for a brief spell.
In no way am I going to slag the best run franchise in the MLB. We are talking about the quintessential template of how to run your team in the modern world of baseball.
All I am projecting in this article is that every team goes through a stretch of play where they may not be performing to capabilities.
Some of these problems may even persist for a whole campaign.
The 2011 Cardinals won the World Series, and then after losing their future hall of fame legend in Albert Pujols, were able to bring in Free Agents Carlos Beltran to help offset the power headed out the door.
The move paved the way for another final four finish. In fact, St. Louis held a 3 – 1 NLCS lead before the Giants won 3 straight.
2013 saw their young players come to fruition at the same time, and it mixed perfectly with their cagey Veteran core.

How All Of The St. Louis Cardinals Roster Was Acquired: 2014 Season
The Cardinals Roster Tree has been the easiest to do by far. This organization has Drafted so incredibly well, that there has been no real need for trading of late. We will still see how drafting J.D. Drew has turned into Adam Wainwright, and how Albert Pujols signing with the Angels, made for the Cards to select young phenom Michael Wacha. St. Louis is made to their 8th NLCS in the last 13 years, and 4th World Series Appearance in the last 10, with a multitude of young stars coming in the horizon. They are going to be players in the National League for some time to come.

St. Louis Cardinals State Of The Union: 2014 Preview
2013 was a stellar year for the Saint Louis Cardinals, just falling short of capturing the franchises 12th World Series title. Though St. Louis may have arguably lost their best offensive power hitter of 2013, Carlos Beltran, St. Louis is well armed and poised to return to the Fall Classic for the 2nd straight season an 5th Fall Classic Appearance since 2004. The franchise has also been to 8 NLCS’s since the turn of the millennium.

Much like the offseason of a year ago, St. Louis made little moves. Despite little deals made, big changes are coming to the way this team operates in 2014.
Just because the Cardinals will look different does not mean you should expect less success than that of their World Series run of 2013.

For all of those websites that put off writing about the Cardinals after the World Series due to fatigue, it is time to brush up on the best run franchise in the Major Leagues.
The majority of the players in the system and in the Majors were developed by the Cardinals franchise.
Last year, I did a Roster Tree of how all of the players were acquired. Something like 18 of the 25 players were Drafted by the club.
That is light years ahead of the next team in the race.
When you see that St. Louis has made it to the final four clubs 8 teams in 13 years, and now has made 4 trips to the World Series in a decade, you are leaving another chapter in the legacy of the franchise. Read the rest of this entry
Cards State Of The Union – Fall 2013: John Mozeliak + STL Brass Are Baseball’s Best ‘Rounders’
The Cardinals are the model NL Franchise, having gone to 8 out of the last 13 NLCS Matchups. They also stand to benefit that the highest revenue teams in the MLB like New York, Boston, Los Angles (x2), Detroit, Texas and San Francisco do not reside in their Division. Their team has been run the best in the MLB for over a decade. At a just north of a $115 MIL payroll, they slightly hover over the Reds for highest team salary in the NL Central. if the Cards continue to display “Rounding techniques” in player acquisitions, they will keep contending every year with the other big boys across baseball. When you add the fact that the brass knows how to run a club like the Oakland A’s and Tampa Bays Rays do, but also have money to spend, then you can see how dangerous this organization has been since 2000.

What is not to like about this team?
The club has appeared in 4 World Series in the last decade, 8 NLCS series since the turn of the millennium, and now with brilliant drafting and trades, the club is in outstanding position to keep it up for the next decade.
While I hated the fact they recently signed Jhonny Peralta, I understand the move because it was so smart.
This franchise addressed their two top needs this offseason, without surrendering any of their top young Pitching prospects, or even Oscar Taveras for that matter.
Did I also mention that when Carlos Beltran signs somewhere else – the club receives another pick?

This is the last day of October but in essence, the month has already been won by David Ortiz and Michael Wacha.
I created the SullyMetric Who Owned October? to determine which player was the dominant force throughout the post season.
I explain the stat HERE, but basically for every post season game, the winning team had a hitter and a pitcher awarded a full WOO based upon how they contributed to the victory.
And, at my discretion, I gave a 1/2 WOO to a player on the losing team if they deserved it.
The idea would be the pitcher and the hitter who had the highest WOO total would be the ones who dominated the post season.
And if the two winners are any indication, it worked in determining the best.
Big Papi David Ortiz finished with a 5 1/2 WOO, the highest total for any batter. Besides his big numbers in the World Series en route to an MVP, he had the highlights throughout the postseason. Read the rest of this entry

Now that the Boston Red Sox have won the 2013 World Series, the oddsmakers have already dropped them, plus fellow 2013 Fall Classic Participants (St. Louis) to be tied for the 3rd seed, with the Washington Nationals.
A massive surprise on the list are the Los Angeles Angels, who will have the 6th favorite slot to win the World Series at +1400.
If you are looking for value, you should consider the Reds (Tied for the 8th seed) at +1600. They are merely a few players, and perhaps a few tweaks from going far in one of these playoffs.

So here it is again in the Playoffs with St. Louis facing elimination. The club is 8 – 1 in their last 9 elimination games (Game 7 of the 2012 NLCS is the only defeat (SF Giants – suffered in that realm since 2011.)
I think they can stave off being sent home on Wednesday as well. It would be really good for the game of Major League Baseball if we could have another Game #7.
While I don’t like the Red Sox (as a NYY fan) – I respect them, and David Ortiz is one of my favorite players in the game today. What he is doing is incredible.

Each winning team for every post season game gets a pitcher and a hitter who earn a full WOO.
And at my discretion, I award a 1/2 WOO to a worthy player on the losing team.

Receiving 1 WOO:
Carlos Beltran went 3-4, driving in a pair and scoring another propelling the Cardinals to a 9-0 win over the Dodgers, clinching the NL Pennant.
Michael Wacha threw 7 shutout innings to earn his second win over the Dodgers and earn NLCS MVP honors.
Receiving 1/2 WOO:
No Dodger earned a 1/2 WOO.
St. Louis Cardinals Current Roster Tree: How All Of The Team Was Acquired
The Cardinals Roster Tree has been the easiest to do by far. This organization has Drafted so incredibly well, that there has been no real need for trading of late. We will still see how drafting J.D. Drew has turned into Adam Wainwright, and how Albert Pujols signing with the Angels, made for the Cards to select young phenom Michael Wacha. St. Louis is in their 8th NLCS in the last 13 years, with a multitude of young stars coming. They are going to be players in the National League for some time to come.

From today’s games:
Receiving 1 WOO:
David Freese doubled off of Clayton Kershaw to start the 5th. He would come around to score the games’ only run as the Cardinals topped Los Angeles, 1-0.
Jhonny Peralta hit a 2 out, 2 strike RBI single to centerfield in the 6th inning to give the Tigers all the runs they would need in their 1-0 victory over the Red Sox. He would finish the game 3-4.
Anibal Sanchez courted history by throwing 6 no hit innings in Fenway Park for Game 1 of the ALCS. His pitch count may have been high and so was his walk total, but the Red Sox could not get a hit until the 9th and he struck out 12 batters including 4 in the first. Sanchez was credited with the 1-0 victory for Detroit.
Michael Wacha shut down the Dodgers bats with 6 2/3 innings of 5 hit shutout ball. He walked only one while striking out 8, earning the 1-0 triumph for the Cardinals.
Receiving 1/2 WOO:
Clayton Kershaw pitched 6 innings of 2 hit ball and let up only an unearned run. He also would collect one of the Dodgers’ 5 hits. He got the loss, 1-0, at the hands of the Cardinals.
Jon Lester was outstanding, pitching into the 7th, going 6 1/3 innings, 1 run and 1 walk in a hard luck 1-0 defeat by Detroit.
Daniel Nava broke up the Tigers’ no hitter in the 9th inning and briefly gave Red Sox fans hope in their 1-0 loss to the Tigers.

Boston is only a -125 favorite to win the ALCS, however this is a better odd than banking on Jon Lester to win Game #1 at -158. If Boston wins tonight’s game, they will have an obvious decisive advantage. Play the better odd here and pick them to win the ALCS>. You will profit .80 Cents on every dollar wagered. If you are a fan of Anibal Sanchez, picking them at +142 is a good value for a guy that won the AL ERA championship this season. While he was lit up by Oakland in the ALDS this year, Sanchez featured a 1.77 ERA – in 3 Game Starts in 2012.

The Sully Baseball Daily Podcast today covers a wild full day of playoff baseball.
A near no hitter, a surreal near brawl, a walk off homer from a most unlikely source and a clinching game that defies description and showed one manager who panicked and another who probably should have.
Alex Cobb, Matt Holliday, Clayton Kershaw, Evan Longoria, Dan Otero, Seth Smith, Juan Uribe and Michael Wacha all earned full WOO’s.
Jose Alvarez, Pedro Alvarez, Jacoby Ellsbury, Freddy Garcia, Charlie Morton and Jhonny Peralta earned half WOO’s.

From today’s games:
Receiving 1 WOO
Alex Cobb was not on top of his game but he kept the Red Sox from breaking open the game in his 5 innings of work and helped set up Tampa’s 5-4 come from behind win.
Matt Holliday provided all the offense the Cardinals with need with his 2 run homer that sparked St. Louis’ 2-1 win over the Pirates.
Clayton Kershaw pitched on short rest and threw 6 innings with 2 unearned runs, 6 strikeouts and 1 walk. He would not get the decision but the Dodgers would prevail, 5-4.
Evan Longoria saved the series with one swing of his bat by launching a 2 out 3 run homer in the 5th that woke the Rays up. Tampa would go on to win 5-4.
Dan Otero worked out of trouble in two scoreless innings from the bullpen and prevented the Tigers from staging a comeback as the A’s won 6-3.
Seth Smith got two hits including a 2 run homer that gave the A’s insurance in their 6-3 win in Detroit.
Juan Uribe launched a 2 run 8th inning go ahead come from behind homer that gave the Dodgers the clinching lead over the Braves that they would not relinquish, 5-4.
Michael Wacha threw a no hitter into the 8th inning and kept the Cardinals alive, defeating the Pirates in Pittsburgh, letting up just 1 run and 1 hit for a final of 2-1.
Receiving 1/2 WOO:
Jose Alvarez stopped the bleeding in Detroit with 3 innings of no hit shutout ball out of the bullpen. It would not be enough as the Tigers could not score or mount a comeback, losing 6-3.
Pedro Alvarez broke up the no hitter with a towering home run that brought the Pirates to within one run. It would be practically all of the Pirates offense in their 2-1 loss.
Jacoby Ellsbury got three hits, two of them doubles, and a stolen base and scored 2 of the Red Sox 4 runs in their 5-4 loss to the Rays.
Freddy Garcia stunned the Dodger Stadium crowd with a wonderful 6 inning performance where his lone blemishes came on a pair of solo homers. He struck out 6 and let up only 2 runs and would have received the win if the bullpen did not melt down in the 8th.
Charlie Morton let only 2 Cardinals score and allowed only 3 hits while pitching into the 6th in the Pirates 2-1 loss.
Jhonny Peralta drove in 1/3 of the Tigers entire run total for the series with his game tying 2 run single in the 4th. The Tigers would lose 6-3.
