What Masahiro Tanaka’s Injury Means For The Yankees In 2014 + 2015
Posted by chuckbooth3023

With Masahiro Tanaka out for at least 6 weeks with a UCL tear, the Yankees are dealing with 4/5ths of their opening day rotation now on the DL – and their 5th starter (Kuroda) having struggled in the 2nd half of 2013. The club is barely at .500, and must realize there is an opportunity to reset the 50% Luxury Tax Threshold to 0, by slashing some payroll via trades in the next 3 weeks. The worst thing this organization could do would try to salvage this year, like they did in 2013, by adding payroll, flipping prospects, for an ill-advised playoff run that the odds are stacked up against.

I have talked at length about the Yankees precarious position of defining whether or not they are contenders or not, and whether they should seek selling off some assets, to fall below the $189 MIL Luxury Tax Threshold – or if the franchise should run at a postseason berth in Derek Jeter‘s last season.
Seeing that Masahiro Tanaka will be out for at least 6 weeks with a partially torn UCL on his pitching arm, and possibly be out with Tommy John Surgery afterwards, this season outlook is becoming bleak.
Even with the Japanese superstar throwing at a premium level, the club would have a longshot chance to make the playoffs – and do some damage. Read the rest of this entry →

Assessing the Nats – article written By David Huzzard
Call it a guilty pleasure or masochism. It doesn’t matter. For some reason I can’t stop listening to DC sports talk radio. I know I should and with hundreds of XM channels that I pay for every month I really should, but I can’t. I want to hear the dozens of minutes they spend talking about the Washington Nationals each day and the callers they have on the airwaves. Don’t ask me why. These aren’t even the Phil Wood callers who have at least spent the last three hours watching baseball. They may see something completely different from me in the game but at least they’ve watched.
The biggest topic of conversation this entire season is how disappointing the Nationals are in one way or another. For a reminder the Washington Nationals have the third best winning percentage in the NL, the best run differential, have scored the fifth most…

Sully Baseball Daily Podcast – July 11, 2014
Posted by Paul Francis Sullivan
LeBron is coming back to Cleveland. SOMEONE is going to eventually win a title there.
I for one hope it is the Indians who win first.
It is a Cleveland centric episode of The Sully Baseball Daily Podcast.
Clayton Kershaw, Scott Kazmir, Mike Trout, Matt Garza, Ryan Ludwick, Jose Quintana, Adrian Beltre and the immortal Arismendy Alcantara all added to their totals for Who Owns Baseball?
This my plea to Cleveland fans from 2011.

AMERICAN LEAGUE
AL EAST
Analysis: Last month I had the Orioles as my favorite for the Division at +650, and now they are at +130.
With recent injuries to several Blue Jays and Yankees key personnel, and the continued struggles of Tampa Bay and Boston, this is a no-brainer.
Baltimore has a 3 game lead on Toronto and a 4 game lead on the Bronx Bombers.
With the Bronx Bombers missing 4/5ths of their rotation, I actually believe the Rays are in better position to win the AL East. Read the rest of this entry →

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (July 10th) – Updated Yearly WOB Totals For 2014
Posted by Paul Francis Sullivan
Clayton Kershaw saw his scoreless inning streak end at 41, but a single run did not blemish another amazing start. He threw a complete game, allowing just 3 hits, striking out 11 and walking 1 and beating San Diego 2-1 for his 11th win.
Arismendy Alcantara was supposed to be sent to the minors. Instead he went 4-5, missing the cycle by a homer, drove in 3, scored 2 and got a hit in the 12th to spark the game winning rally as the Cubs won 6-4 in Cincinnati.
Scott Kazmir threw 7 shutout 3 hit innings, striking out 9 while walking only one Giant batter, leading Oakland to a 6-1 victory.
Mike Trout led an Angel offensive onslaught with 4 hits, including a homer, 4 RBI and 3 runs scored in a 15-6 thrashing of the Rangers.
They owned baseball on July 10, 2014.

Baseball’s Greatest One Hit Wonders Part 1: The Batters

Phil Plantier made his debut with the Boston Red Sox in 1990. During the 1992 season, Plantier crushed 11 HRs and added another 35 RBI in just 53 games. He was then traded in the off-season to the San Diego Padres for Jose Melendez. Plantier then thrived in California.
Chuck Booth (Lead Baseball Writer and @chuckbooth3024 on twitter)- Music has one hit wonders, some have even made an entire career out of just one stretch of time where they were deemed relevant. Baseball is like everything else, they have had their fair share of players that fit this mold. In the next two weeks, we will take a look at hitters and pitchers that were really on fire for a stretch before they petered out just as fast. I harken back to the movie ‘Tin Cup” for this next saying, “Greatness Courts Failure.” The difference between…

Chuck Booth (Lead Baseball Writer) Pitching is the most unnatural motion I can think of. The human arm is not meant to throw 90-100 MPH repeatedly over and over. It is for this reason why I am never surprised when Pitchers go out for any injury. When I was 15, I was the catcher for former Major League Pitcher Chris Reitsma on our ALL-Star Team. I witnessed this kid throwing 90 MPH as a teenager. Honestly, no one could hit the guy. As a catcher for 10 years and having a a decent baseball IQ, I was mad that the coach never let me call his pitches for him. Why he would even throw sliders, curves and breaking balls is beyond me and it cost us some games versus some California and Arizona teams. There was no denying that he was a mega talented pitcher. The New York Yankees are Major League Baseball’s most renowned and successful franchise. Baseball greats such as Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, and Derek Jeter have all worn the famous navy blue and white pinstripes. The Yankees have won 27 World Series championships, and 29 players who spent at least a year with the team have been inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. With so many Hall of Famers to choose from, selecting the best players in the history of the franchise might seem impossible; yet that is exactly what Robert W. Cohen has done in The 50 Greatest Players in New York Yankees History.
This book carefully examines the careers of the players who made the greatest impact on the most successful franchise in the…

The Blue Jays have used their system well to acquire several key pieces from other organizations via trade over recent years.
Despite all of the prospects that have left, several are still on their way to the Majors for the big club and several are highly touted.
In 2014, the Blue Jays will try to erase a 21 year playoff drought. Will the franchise part with some more of its youth, or may they hold steady with the personnel in the MiLB?
If you are a fan, get to know these players we list in the post, and follow their progress in the Minors. if you click their name, it will take you to baseballreference.com’s player page of them. Read the rest of this entry →

Sully Baseball Daily Podcast – July 8, 2014

The All Star Starters line up surprisingly well with the leaders of Who Owns Baseball.
While I congratulate All Star and friend of the podcast, Sean Doolittle, I make a few radical suggestions on how to vote for All Stars on today’s episode of The Sully Baseball Daily Podcast.
Manny Machado, Chase Utley, James Shields, Ian Kennedy, Adrian Beltre, Chris Coghlan, Kevin Correia and Charlie Morton all added to their totals for Who Owns Baseball.

Odds To Win The 2014 World Series Currently + Best/Worst Value Bets
Posted by Jonathan Hacohen

The Rays are not strangers to being out of the playoff picture by 9 or 10 games at this point in the season.- and ultimately qualifying for a spot with a huge run in the 2nd half of the year. At 100/1 Odds right now, you can pick them for a massive value wager. Put 10 bucks on them, and then bet against them tonight for a wager of $12, taking Jason Vargas and KC at – 113. If they lose tonight, you are up about 60 cents, and still have the bet for the whole year. Keep betting like this all week, bet to win $10 a night versus them. If this team goes 4 – 1 or 5 – 0 for the rest of the week, they are in the hunt.- and you may be down $30 – $40, but the worth is still there for the World Series odd, and the team could be kept together with a run. 3 – 2 is still okay. If the club goes 2 – 3 or worse, they may heat up the David Price chatter over the All – Star break.

It was a 4 – 4 – 2 predicting record for the week, however I nailed the top bet and worst bet on the board. The Reds continue to battle in the NL Central, and now have gone up to +3500. Currently they are tied with Pittsburgh and for 14th best odd.
I think the value is right about where it should be.
Crazy enough on the Brewers, they are now the 10th favored team to win the WS- while the Cards have shot up to 7th on the board. This despite the Brew Crew still possessing a 4 game lead on the Red Birds.
Weird enough, I won the Boston Red Sox value pick, even though they are plummeting down the standings faster than any other AL East team. They have no business being 17th on the list.
If you are a believer in the Rays making a comeback like they seem to do every year. they are at 1000/1 to win the Fall Classic. They will be my best value play for the year.
Another absurd notion is that the Orioles are +2000, while the Blue Jays sit at +1400 now to win the World Series. Talking about no pulse for what is happening. Encarnacion is hurt, Baltimore has a 3 game lead, and expect a big 2nd half from Chris Davis. Read the rest of this entry →
