Every once in a while we will air the (ATR special, like our founder Jonathan Hacohen used to do every week). Sometimes a lot of good questions are asked, all at the same time.
Rather than go on for days on social twitter, it is easier writing in a format that doesn’t limit you to 140 characters:
We had 2 such questions that were good enough to write an article about.
Q: Who do you think should be the MVP in both the AL and NL this year?
A: This one is easier in the AL than the NL, but I would like to point out that the clear-cut favorite (Mike Trout) is not having as good of a year that he did in 2012 and 2013, however this trophy is going his way with the year LA has had.
Will finish with 35 HRs and 110+ RBI, with over 110 Runs scored, (currently has 81 Extra Base Hits for huge MLB Lead) and his stellar defense is definitely the difference separating him from Martinez (a primary DH) and Cabrera.
I will also point out that Victor Martinez (.970 OPS, 30 HRs and 104 RBI) would certainly be right up there if he weren’t playing on the Tigers.
His numbers, contact rate, and overall professionalism as a hitter have saved Detroit’s bacon this year.
V-Mart is hurt by the fact Cabrera is on the same club. For as much as the two time reigning MVP has been dealing with injury,. his so-called “down year” still has him with a 3 Slash Line of .318/.380/.527 with 104 RBI.
The big 1B for Detroit has seen his HRs cut nearly in half, but he is still leading the league in Doubles with 49 – and has 73 Extra Base Hits are even more than he had last year.
The Tigers never running away with the competition also is a drawback for both players. Read the rest of this entry
Who Owned Baseball Sept 19, 2014 (Daily AL/NL Pitcher + Hitter MVP’s) + 2014 #WOB Standings

Jon Lester gave the A’s another stellar outing, going 7 innings, allowing 1 run on a solo homer and striking out 7, earning the 3-1 decision over Philadelphia.
David Ortiz went 3-5 with a pair of homers, including a go ahead shot in the 10th and 3 RBI leading the Red Sox past Baltimore 5-3.
John Lackey went into the 8th, finishing with 7 2/3 innings, allowing 1 run and no walks, inching the Cardinals closer to a post season berth with a 2-1 win over the Reds.
A.J. Ellis reached base 3 times, scored all three times and homered twice, driving in 4 runs as the Dodgers clobbered the Cubs, 14-5, and clinched a post season berth.
They all owned baseball on Sept 19, 2014.

MLB Baseball Is A Great Value Live At The Park
Safeco Field is among the very top valued parks in the MLB. A pair of tickets can be had for $35 – $40 at the most, and there are an unbelievable amount of free parking spots within a mile of the venue. The pricing for the 2014 Post Season is decent as well for those with season ticket holder status. $40 for face valued tickets (LF Bleachers) during the LDS round. That goes to $85 during the ALCS – and only $120 per ticket for the World Series games. I can’t even buy a ‘Standing Room Only’ Ticket for my local NHL Hockey team. to see the worst team in the league for that much!

Stop me if you heard this before…Baseball is dying.. Come on folks, the actual facts don’t suggest that at all. Sure if you are going back to the day when there were 3 networks on TV, and that is it.
I am going to let you in on a little secret here. Back in 2004, I was once a NHL hockey fan. Yeah, let the stereotype stand for living north of the border, but yeah I followed the sport religiously, even more than baseball for a period.
At that point in my life, I had been to about a hundred games live in Vancouver, Montreal and Calgary, and had been to exactly 3 MLB games (1 at Skydome in 1989, and 2 at Olympic Stadium) in the mid 90’s.
Once I went to Safeco Field once in 2005, I was hooked and had the vibe to see all other 29 parks in rapid fashion.
My love for viewing baseball parks escalated from there into 4 world record chases – to become the fastest to see a full game live at all 30 MLB Stadiums.
A lot of my friends and family are often baffled why i don’t just watch hockey, and support the local hockey team. My interest dwindles every year, and especially now that I am more rabid about baseball than ever, doing this website daily. Read the rest of this entry
Who Owned Baseball Sept 18, 2014 (Daily AL/NL Pitcher + Hitter MVP’s) + 2014 #WOB Standings

Felix Hernandez established a career high in strikeouts while throwing 7 shutout innings, allowing 3 hits, 2 walks and fanning 11 Angels. He did not get the decision but the Mariners stayed alive in the playoff chase with a 3-1 victory.
Logan Morrison hit a potential season saving 3 run homer with 2 outs in the 9th inning that gave Seattle a 3-1 win over the Angels.
Gerrit Cole pitched 7 strong inings, giving up 6 hits and 2 runs while walking none and striking out 7. His Pirates would complete the sweep of the Red Sox, 3-2.
Wilin Rosario went 4-5 with a double and a towering 2 run, bottom of the 9th, come from behind walk off homer to give the Rockies a 7-6 win over Arizona.

AL Wild Card Race Heats Up: KC/DET Meetup, For All Others, Just Win This Weekend To Gain Ground
Kansas City might be tied for the #1 wildcard position and just 1/2 game out of the AL Central. however with that 4 – 2 in the 10th inning game resumption against Cleveland pending on Monday, the club must win the series versus the Tigers at home in my opinion, in order to make the playoffs. After the weekend, they finish their last 8 games on the road. If they don’t win the series this weekend, chances are the A’s/and or Mariners may pass them in the standings after Monday Night. The Royals have the hardest schedule left out of the 4 clubs.

The Seattle Mariners won yesterday, and the Athletics lost, to pull all top 4 Wild Card contenders to within 2 games of each other heading into the weekend.
Detroit leads the Central with a 84 – 68 record, and KC is a half game behind at 83 – 68, but really are 90% at 83 – 69. with a 4 – 2 10 inning deficit in that suspended game resumption on Monday Sept 22, 2014 to the Indians.
So while the Royals and Tigers battle for the Division at Kauffman Stadium starting Friday. , the ultimate loser of the AL Central, will need to make the postseason via the Wild Card. Needless to say. these 3 games will be pivotal in deciding that.
Since both of those clubs have to have a loser in each of those 3 games, this is great news for the struggling A’s (83 – 69), and especially for the Mariners (82 – 70), to make up some ground if they have good series from Friday to Sunday.
On the surface, Oakland and Seattle should hope the Tigers win the series versus KC this weekend, as that would put the Royals potentially at best 84 – 71 after that game against the Indians is over on Monday. If the Tigers sweep them, the Royals could be staring at 83 – 72 rather quickly.
Oakland would need just one victory to pass KC, and Seattle would need 1 to tie the Royals and 2 to pass them.
The A’s entertain the lowly Philadelphia Phillies this weekend at O.Co, whereas the best road team in the AL (Mariners, 44 – 30) are in Houston to battle the Astros at Minute Maid Park..
If both clubs can win their series (if not sweep the worse squads they are playing) than they will put themselves in great positions for the playoff in going forward.
I have to think the worst scenario for those two teams – is to see the Royals take just 2 games against Detroit, as that would put the Tigers still at 85 – 70, KC at 85 – 69, with the suspended game still to make – probably seeing the, at 85 – 70 as well. Oakland would need a sweep to have a lead, and win 2 out of 3 to tie the Royals/Tigers. The M’s would require a sweep over the Astros – to land them at 85 – 70. Read the rest of this entry

Adam Wainwright pitched a complete game 7 hit shutout of the Brewers and inching the Cardinals closer to another division title with a 2-0 victory.
Carlos Carrasco tossed a 2 hit, 1 walk, 12 strikeout complete game shutout of the Astros, giving the Indians a 2-0 victory.
Charlie Blackmon led a potent Colorado attacked with a 5 for 5 performance, homering, scoring 4 times and driving in a pair in the 16-2 blow out of the Dodgers.
C.J. Cron broke open a game that was scoreless in the 7th with a 2 out, 3 run homer that helped the Angels beat the Mariners 5-0 and clinch the AL West.
They all owned baseball on Sept 17, 2014.

The Nationals and Orioles both locked down their respective league’s East Division’s last night. Could it be a possible Beltway World Series?
Or how about a Freeway Series (I-5) between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Los Angeles Angels Of Orange County near Disneyland and Fullerton (or whatever Arte Moreno’s team us called now).
If that doesn’t tickle your fancy, maybe iconic close series of 1985 and 1989 respectively, meaning the I-70 series (KC vs STL) or the Bay Bridge (Earthquake Series), between the A’s and Giants.
Both of those winning clubs have not won the Fall Classic since those years.
Even Detroit and Pittsburgh are only 284 Miles apart, should they have a chance meeting.
Who is not here for the 1st time in 20 years – will probably be the Braves (whose playoff chances are on fumes), and the Yankees/Red Sox all failed to have at least one representative of those 3 in the Post Season since 1989, when the Cubs, Dodgers, A’s and Blue Jays made the playoffs.
2009 was the last time teams within close proximity to each other squared off in the World Series – when the Yanks took out the defending champion Phillies in 6 games.
The Yankees/Mets 2000 “Subway Series” was the last time two teams in the same city played in the Fall Classic, something the 2 Los Angeles squad’s could do.

Washington and Baltimore both clinch in an amazing night for the Beltway and both franchises are seeking redemption.
Things get tight in the AL Central, a closer should be put in moth balls and stupidity overshadows what was basically a meaningless Rays and Yankees game.

Who Owned Baseball Sept 16, 2014 (Daily AL/NL Pitcher + Hitter MVP’s) + 2014 #WOB Standings

Jake Arrieta took a no hitter into the 8th and finished with a complete game 1 hit, 1 walk, thirteen strikeout masterpiece of the Reds, giving the Cubs a 7-0 shutout.
Wilmer Flores doubled and homered twice, scoring 3 times and driving in 6, leading the Mets offense in a 9-1 drubbing of the Marlins.
Ricky Nolasco kept the mighty Tigers off the board with 8 shutout innings, allowing 5 hits and 1 walk. He would get a no decision as the bullpen blew the lead but the Twins would come back to win, 4-3.
Adam Eaton went 4-5, missing the cycle by a homer, and scored a pair of runs as the White Sox frustrated the Royals, 7-5.

Last time I did the Odds to win the World Series was the last time I am doing worst odds this year, and furthermore, I am not touching the best value bets for the next few weeks, until the playoffs begin.
I had a subpar week at 5 – 5, after several red hot weeks. The Cardinals and Orioles took great strides in the wins, while I was wrong in predicting a slight retraction for the Angels and Bucs on the loss side.
The Blue Jays actually have played well in September, but have still fallen in odds because of hot streaks for other clubs.
Kansas City has come back to the pack a little.
I was fully wrong on thinking the Braves would take a run at least a playoff spot.
I forecasted the M’s, Yankees and Brewers to go into a bit of a dry spell. Read the rest of this entry
Stop Praising The Yankees For 2014! + Someone Should Be Held Accountable For This Disaster!
The Yankees can’t stop themselves from spending!! A self-imposed cap of under $189 MIL was shot when injuries began to mount. The club should have packed it in for the year, traded veterans near the deadline, with nothing but a hope and a prayer to make the playoffs. Now because they couldn’t fall under the Salary Tax Threshold, it will take a miracle to reach underneath this mark before the 2016 CBA. Welcome to financial hell Yanks, and your team is old – and have no Starting Pitcher’s likely above the #5 slot to begin the 2015 season currently on your 40 man roster under contract, and your payroll is already nearing $175 MIL on just 17 players as it is. Despite all of this, the Yankees are set to offer Cashman an extension? Are they for real?

I am sick and tired of hearing all this praise being bestowed on Brian Cashman for the job he is done.
I will not lump Joe Girardi into this conversation, Heck, he has done a great job manipulating the roster he has been given. With the amount of injuries (which happens to old players – hello!) the Yanks are lucky they are not cellar dwelling with the Red Sox.
Back near the Trade Deadline, Chuck Booth explained the “Pinstripers” were foolish to not take advantage of a seller’s market, giving them the ability to deal some veterans – in order to get under the $189 MIL Luxury Tax Threshold. Miguel Cabrera went 3-5 with a double and a homer in the 9th inning to help the Tigers beat the Twins, 8-6.
Mark Trumbo hit a grand slam and drove in a 5 run, helping the the Diamondbacks top the Giants 6-2.
Matt Shoemaker pitched the Angels into the playoffs with a 7 2/3 inning performance, allowing 5 hits and 1 run, walking none and getting the 8-1 victory over Seattle.
Andrew Cashner threw a complete game 2 hit shuout, winning a tense 1-0 pitchers duel against the Phillies in San Diego.

Josh Harrison hit a 2 run, game tying double, came around to score the go ahead run, collected another hit and in the field started a triple play, leading the current Wild Card Pirates to a 7-3 win over the Cubs.
J. D. Martinez got on base 3 times with a homer and an RBI single, helping the Tigers come from behind and defeat division rival Cleveland, 6-4.
Clayton Kershaw threw 8 solid innings, allowing 2 runs, striking out 9 and walking 1 as the Dodgers put some distance between the Giants, winning 4-2.
Dallas Keuchel pitched no hit ball into the 7th and stopped the Angels 10 game winning streak with his 7 innings, 3 hit, 1 run performance, getting the 6-1 decision for Houston.

Jeremy Guthrie kept Kansas City in the playoff picture with 8 innings of 3 hit no earned run ball to beat the Red Sox, 7-1.
Ian Desmond reached base 4 times, scoring a pair, driving in 3 and stole a pair of bases as the Nationals moved closer to clinching the Division with a 10-3 thrashing of the Mets.
Zack Greinke not only gave the Dodgers 6 strong shutout innings but he got on base 3 times, driving in a pair and homering as Los Angeles throttled San Francisco, 17-0.

Why The Marlins Future Is Very Bright: Team Payroll And Player Options Going Fwd
The Marlins took great strides in the NL East this year – and were on the periphery for the 2nd Wild Card Position until the recent Stanton injury. With the club having plenty of money to spend, and a nice amount controllable players, the organization could vault into contention fast if the brass decides to spend some dough on Free Agent talent this winter.

Why the Marlins Future Is Very Bright
The Fish are right now best known for two things. The first is the potential NL MVP Giancarlo Stanton who has the most raw power in Major League Baseball.
The second is for the “cheap” owner Jeffrey Loria who I think is given to much negative press and bashing.
This is a team that is incredibly young and has a total of ZERO dollars committed to the 2017 payroll and only 8 million to 2016.
Lets not forget about Jose Fernandez who just turned 22 and is coming back from TJ surgery.

It Is Time To Move Miguel Cabrera Permanently To The DH Role
Someone should be tackled if they put Cabrera back in the field for the remainder of the 2014 season. I personally believe he should be transitioned to the DH position permanently. You are speaking about the best pure offensive player in the game. The man has to play for the next decade. Cabrera has fought his off season surgery for a torn groin, to put up decent numbers in 2014 – .310/.370/.514 3 Slash Line with 22 HRs and 101 RBI. Yes, he is leading the league with 45 Doubles, but he will likely fail to hit 30 HRs for the 1st time as a Tiger this campaign. The .885 OPS would also mark his worst total since his rookie year. He has shown this week he can handle the DH role.
I am not talking just about 2014 here. Miguel Cabrera has come off his short rest, to bash out 8 hits in 3 games – since taking the position of DH on the club. So I say…just leave him there forever.
Often I have wondered why more teams don’t just take advantage of the slot in the American League. Instead, for most clubs, the Designated Hitter is used as an off day, or for matchup preferences.
You want to know why Boston has 3 World Series in the last 10 years… I will tell you… David Ortiz!!
Big Papi has been so much more productive than every other player at the role, that having him against the pack gives the Red Sox a clear cut upper hand.
I know Cabrera is making megabucks now, but are you really going to miss his defensive prowess at 1B?
Who cares about piling up AL MVP’s because the voters are always biased about 1 way players. The Tigers should be going for World Series Titles, and what better way to preserve their #1 commodity. Read the rest of this entry
The Nationals Are Not The Team You Think They Are
All of the Nats starting position players last night have an BA of .244 (low with Cabrera) or better (.299 highest (in Span), .300 OBP (low .304 (Desmond), high .383 (Werth) or more, and most important – is that all 8 have an SLG % north of .400 (.401 Ramos is low and LaRoche highest at .468, While those numbers aren’t good for one player, the depth of the team is that good. Span is going to score a 100 runs. The 2 – 5 hitters, Rendon, Werth, LaRoche and Desmond will all near 20 HRs and 90 RBI – while Harper and Ramos surely would have belted 20 HRs each if not for injury. Their 8 hitter, Cabrera, has a career OPS of .742. These guys have the lengthiest offense in the NL. That is not even talking about their Pitching, which may be their biggest asset…

Pick up a newspaper or turn on local sports radio and any conversation about the Nats will eventually devolve to how they are a team of guys all pulling in one direction and doing whatever it takes to win.
The picture being painted is the Nationals as a team of grit and heart and hustle but most importantly a team.
There is a belief that the Nationals have no star players and if you isolated yourself to local coverage it’s easy to believe that but then you’d also believe that the Capitals and Wizards have no star players either and the only star player in Washington DC worthy of praise is Kirk Cousins.

Johnny Cueto pitched 8 shutout innings, allowing just 3 hits and walking one Cardinal batter and won the 1-0 pitchers duel for the Reds.
Chris Sale dominated the A’s over 8 shutout innings, letting up 2 hits, 2 walks while striking out 9 and earned the 1-0 victory for the White Sox.
Anthony Rendon went 3-5 with a homer, 2 runs scored and 2 RBI, helping the Nationals beat the Mets, 6-2 and inch closer to a Division Title.
Chris Young broke up the Tampa no hitter in the 8th with a double and then crushed a walk off, come from behind 3 run homer to win it in the 9th for the Yankees, 5-4.
They owned baseball on Sept 11, 2014.
