Evan Gattis Or Jonathan Lucroy Could Be The Houston Astros Answer Behind The Plate

Jonathan Lucroy played like an MVP for the 1st half of the 2014 season, and ended up 4th overall in MVP voting that year, based on 68 Extra Base Hits an .837 OPS. Lucroy has only two years left of Team Control and the club would be in be in prime position to acquire a load of prospects if they were to deal him. The Astros have plenty of guys to land him – including several 1B prospects – in which the Brew Crew needs longterm. The two clubs have a history of doing deals too.

While it is very early in the 2016 season, it is becoming very apparent that the Houston Astros are lacking success at the catcher position. Right now the Houston Astros are carrying two catchers, Jason Castro and Erik Kratz.
Through five games, Castro is hitting .071 and Kratz is hitting .000. Unfortunately, this rough catching production has been a trend over the past two years. In 2014 and 2015, Castro hit .222 and .211 respectively. He has also seen a 63% reduction in his power production from 2013 to 2015.
I will admit that Castro’s defensive ability and leadership in the clubhouse is huge for the Astros’ success, but his offensive struggles are hurting the team.
It could be time for the Houston Astros to start looking for some alternatives behind the plate. Please click the link below to read the rest of the article:

Yanks Get Blanked To Be Eliminated In MLB Shutout Survivor (With B Lineup) + MLB Run Scoring Survivor Update

I get that the Bronx Bombers will need to rest their veterans on certain days, but to not have Beltran and A-Rod in the lineup at the same time is not cool. Why not switch days they were not playing on Friday and Saturday? New York was blanked 4 – 0 by the Tigers and Zimmermann yesterday. Dustin Ackley made a critical mental error at First Base, and he and back up OF Aaron Hicks both went hitless in the matchup.

The Yankees became the 4th club to be blanked this year yesterday afternoon in Detroit. While some teams have not played their 4th games already. their placement could be higher than 27th. however this was to be expected.
I hate the fact they cashed it in as a fan. Sitting Alex Rodriguez and Carlos Beltran all in the same game – just four games into the schedule is pretty dumb.
I have no problem with the guys excusing A-Rod with a pass versus the tough right hander in Jordan Zimmermann, but really the club could have started Mark Teixeira at First Base and had Beltran as the DH. Are they really that frail that they can’t even make it through half a week?
At worst, why not rotate who takes the contest off. They better all be in the lineup today against Mike Pelfrey.
It is completely understandable for Joe Girardi to give the veterans the day off, no worries there, but to field a lineup that possessed Dustin Ackley and Aaron Hicks is ridiculous. They should have just thrown CC Sabathia in this match if they were putting out the “B” lineup.
Regardless here – the Yankees are gone from this competition. At least they crossed off another variation in their MLB Runs Scoring Survivor. Read the rest of this entry

Odds To Win The MLB Divisions In 2016: Best Value Bets

It seems about once every 3 years Ubaldo Jimenez puts together a Cy Young caliber type of year. If he can find all the stars aligned in the right direction he could throw like a suitable #1 pitcher in the league. The problem with the rotation is that Jimenez and Tillman are up and down – while Gausman and Bundy are unproven at the big league. At least the potential is there for one year. Decent Innings were thrown by both starters this week, and Bundy worked a nice frame out of the Bullpen last night.

So less than a week of play has occurred and we are seeing some early trends. They jumped from +1300 to +900 in 3 games, and I still believe that is great value.
1st impressions are I am glad I bet a lot of money on the Baltimore Orioles for the Division and the American League Pennant overall. Yes they swept a Twins club at home, and have yet to play on the road, but the pitching looks decent.
Chris Tillman and Ubaldo Jimenez look decent in their limited work, and the offense has come up clutch.
If the O’s are able to get that Cy Young caliber type of chucker Jimenez seems to wharf into for half a year (for once every 3 seasons), than maybe Baltimore has a fighting chance to win the AL East in 2016.
Baltimore was 47 – 31, and played one of the weirdest home games ever in front of no fans after the Baltimore riots. For those scoring at home too, the Rays hosted 3 games with the civil unrest, and that is why there were only 78 games played at Camden Yards in 2015.
The Orioles were 34 – 50 on the road. If they are able to win some games away from home cooking, they will compete. Read the rest of this entry
How Do You Define A Sports Dynasty In Baseball History And Now?

I’ve been wanting to write this piece for forever – I’ve started and I’ve stopped but this picture is an inspiration to finally write the story I need to write.
The “even year” San Francisco Giants are NOT a dynasty and the above picture illustrates that, but I have examples beyond that, that help prove my point.
DEFINITION OF A DYNASTY:
According to the dictionary this is the definition of a dynasty:
- a succession of rulers who are members of the same family
- the period during which a certain family reigns
That can be applied to sports teams …. I define a sports dynasty as follows:
Dynasties are teams that are DOMINANT over a significant period of time.
For further examples and information on sports dynasties and why they qualify as dynasties ….

THURS NIGHT: Tonight is a rough night for Cubs fans. Young superstar, Kyle Schwarber, was carted off the of the field after a collision with fellow outfielder, Dexter Fowler, against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Nobody knows the severeness of the injury, but typically nothing good can come from being carted off the field. Based on the collision, it looks like there could be an injury to Schwarber’s upper leg (femur area), but that is a guess coming from a baseball blogger and not a doctor.
Hopefully this injury isn’t serious because this could be a huge loss for the Chicago Cubs offense. To read the rest of the article for updates and to see the collision (no apparent graphic content), click the link below:

Offensive Outburst Conceals Poor Outing By Pineda: Yankees Win 16 – 6 Over Astros

Last night, the Yankees rebounded from their flat performance on the previous night. In that game the team looked rather uninspired as they fell 5-3 to the Houston Astros.
Last night the outcome was way better as the Yankees beat the Astros 16-6. A slugfest showed exactly the opposite of what the Yanks showed on Tuesday.
Six multiple base hits (two doubles, a triple and three homeruns) drove in eleven runs.
Of the starters, only A-Rod and Brett Gardner did not collect a hit. Most hits collected Starlin Castro, who went 4 for 5 with 5 runs batted in. Didi Gregorius got three singles out of five at bats but did not drive in a run.
This slugfest totally concealed the poor outing of Michael Pineda. The tall Dominican right hander needed 87 pitches in only five innings.
In the first inning he gave up a solo homerun to Carlos Correa already and in the next inning he gave up a grand slam homerun to George Springer after he hit Jose Altuve with a pitch. If that wasn’t bad enough, Pineda also gave up Carlos Corea’s second homerun of the game.

Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion are both free agents after this season. Will this fact translate into big years for the two?
Every Toronto Blue Jays fan knows that 2016 marks the end of both Jose Bautista an Edwin Encarnacion’s contracts. Both players set the start of the new season as their deadline to sign an extension. Neither one has signed a new contract with the Blue Jays.
If both Jose and Edwin stick to their words, it is likely that neither one will be a Toronto Blue Jay come 2017. Recognizing this fact, many sportswriters have been predicting that both sluggers will have monster seasons, if for no other fact than this is their “walk year” and a big season will translate into a big “payday”.
However, do players tend to have big years in the last year of their contract? In order to try and answer this question, I needed some comparisons to look at.

Top Ten Things We Learned About the National League On Opening Day 2016

Opening Day has come and gone. Sure the pageantry of Opening Day will still be there for some of the teams that Mother Nature has forced to wait a day, but the day that we circled on the calendar back in November is behind us.
We’re about to enter the grind of daily baseball contests and there are a lot of things to learn in these first few weeks back in the fold. Here are the top 10 things I picked up yesterday about the National League landscape while watching all (or parts of all) the games:
- Cedric Hunter is a baseball player. Hunter started yesterday for the Philadelphia Phillies, which by definition makes him one of the top 30 baseball players to have started in left field on Opening Day 2016. Hunter is actually a really good story. He made the Opening Day roster of the Padres back in 2011, and went 1 for 5 before being sent back down. In the scuffle of authenticating the ball from his first Major League hit, Hunter lost the ball. It’s been 5 years and Hunter is still looking for a ball that he hit for a Major League hit. He went 0 for 4 yesterday.
- The rebuilding Phillies seem to have a type. They’ve paired Cedric Hunter in the outfield with Odubel Herrera.Toss in Cesar Hernandez, Freddy Galvis and Carlos Ruiz and you have 5 of the 8 position players listed at under 6′ tall. They’re not all burners, but the Phillies seem to be cornering the market on sub-6 foot athletic baseball players. It’s not a bad strategy, considering these guys could be undervalued by the other organizations.

Yasiel Puig: No Bravado, Just Baseball + Off To A Quick Start

Yasiel Puig is 6 for his 10 AB, with 1 HR, 2 Triples, 4 RBI and 5 runs scored through his 1st 3 games. His club outscored the Padres 25 – 0 in sweeping San Diego. This is somewhat reminiscent of 2013, when the Cuban player took the league by storm when he first made his debut. The better part if that he is doing it quietly. The 4th year player leads the league in BA, SLG and OPS through his 1st 3 games played.

The Dodgers have come blasting out of the opening gates, and the “Wild Horse,” Yasiel Puig, is leading the charge. In the first three games, Puig has been on base in 9 out of 13 Plate Appearances, including a Little League home run as well as an easy three-bagger, two walks, and a hit-by-pitch where he didn’t even so much as glance at the pitcher (first time ever?).
He has also knocked in 4 runs and scored 5. Puig showed us this explosiveness when he first hit the scene in 2013, but there is something different about this Puig and it could be the key to the Dodgers’ season…

Doubleheader Master Schedule For MLB Parks In 2016 By Ground
![]()
Wrigley Field is perfect to double up with games at Miller Park all year. The classic move is the Friday 1:20 game, then head up to Miller Park by ground for a 7:10 contest. You can even catch an Amtrak Train from Union Station that leaves at 5:09 weekdays, and arrives in downtown Milwaukee at 6:35. You avoid the horrible traffic that way.
Chuck Booth (BBBA President) Follow @chuckbooth3024
Follow The BBBA On Twitter Follow @baseballblogs
As an expert in Major League Doubleheaders (I attended 47 of them in 2015, including one Triple Header, and have gone to 75 overall in the last 7 years), I have to say there is fewer opportunities to see 2 games in one day this year than last years schedule.
In 2015 alone, I started off seeing 37 games in April despite their only being 25 days of game action – as part of my 224 total games seen live.
Some of the previous years I really went all out with crazy flight doubleheader scenarios.. These are not really pragmatic unless you are chasing a world record.
Most of the criteria is to be able to see most (if not all) of both games of the twin bill.
There are 2 New York Doubleheaders on June 30th and Aug 27, and 1 all Chicago Doubleheader move on Sept 15, 2016.
Oakland and San Francisco represent the 3rd closest home parks to the New York and Chicago Parks. There are 2 opportunities to see the BAY area 2 fer.
On May 21st, the Yankees are in Oakland at 1:05, and the Giants host the Cubs at 5:05 on the ESPN SUNDAY NIGHT GAME. With a quick run to the BART station after the 1st game, you could conceivably make both contests for the duration.
On June 15th, a more friendly timed doubleheader goes 12:45 at AT & T Park, with a 7:05 start for o.co coliseum.
Several of the doubleheaders with big drives like STL/KC, CIN/STL and CLE/CIN are all feasible to see most of the action for each, and a quick game may result in every pitch seen.
![]()
Yankee Stadium sees plenty of Doubleheaders every season with Citi Field and Citizens Bank Ball Park. Throw in multiple ESPN Sunday Night Games, and I have even same doubleheaders with Nationals Park. Camden Yards, Fenway Park and the Rogers Center (by air). Using Amtrak, Megabus and Greyhound Busses are a cheaper alternative method than driving – and paying a ton of tolls, along with gas.
There will be more doubleheaders forthcoming with more ESPN Sunday Night Games TBD, and other start times for games have not been posted yet other.
There are always cancellations that will also spawn more chances to Say “Let’s Watch Two.”

Citizens Bank Ball Park hosts the most doubleheader chances every year. They are compatible with both New York Parks for doubleheaders, as well as Nats Park and Camden Yards. The best method to use is Amtrak here. but you can still drive to park from all, with Miles ranging from 100 – 135. The Phillies play enough 1:05 games, and those eastern seaboard clubs also see a lot of matinees each season.

I am happy to be back at the helm of the MLB Reports, after completing my record 224 Games in the MLB Trip in 2015. It was the 4th time I have seen all 30 MLB Parks since 2008.
During that time away I was fortunate to do 100 Media Interviews and be named the Baseball Blogger Alliance President.

Wrigley Field is perfect to double up with games at Miller Park all year. The classic move is the Friday 1:20 game, then head up to Miller Park by ground. You can even catch an Amtrak Train from Union Station that leaves at 5:09 weekdays, and arrives in downtown Milwaukee at 6;35. You avoid the horrible traffic that way.

As an expert in Major League Doubleheaders (I attended 47 of them in 2015, including one Triple Header, and have gone to 75 overall in the last 7 years.)
I have to say there is fewer opportunities to see 2 games in one day this year than last years schedule.
In 2015 alone, I started off seeing 37 games in April despite their only being 25 days of game action – as part of my 224 total games seen live.

Carlos Correa has lived up to all of his hype since his arrival to the big leagues in 2015. Yesterday the hype increased even more. In the sixth inning, Correa hit an opposite field home run to tie the game against the New York Yankees.
He finished the day with one home run, two runs, two RBIs, and two stolen bases on the way to a 5-3 victory for the Houston Astros. It is very apparent that he is one of the best in the game and the sky is the limit for Correa.
Time will only tell how good he will be, but in his short time in the big leagues, this 21 year old has proved that he is here to shatter expectations. To read the rest of the article, click the link below:
