Earning Full WOBs:
Paul Goldschmidt homered 3 times, added a single and walk, driving in 5, leading the Cardinals to a 9-5 victory in Milwaukee.
German Márquez struck out 7 Marlins in 6 innings, holding them to 2 hits, 3 walks and 1 run as the Rockies took the 6-1 final.
Matt Shoemaker shutout Toronto over his 7 innings, allowing 2 hits and striking out 7 to earn the 6-0 decision for Detroit.
Mike Trout reached base 3 times, including a key 2 run double, as the Angels rallied late to win 6-2 over the A’s.
Earning 1/2 WOBs:
Marco Estrada blanked the Angels over 6 innings, scattering 2 hits and 2 walks. The A’s bullpen would blow their lead and lose the 6-2 game.
A. J. Pollock got on base 5 times, including a homer, with 3 RBI, but the Dodgers dropped the 5-4 final to Arizona in 13 innings.
Trevor Richards allowed 1 run and 4 hits, striking out 4 Rockies over 6 strong innings. He would not get the decision as the Marlins were beaten, 6-1.
Domingo Santana singled, homered and walked twice. However his Mariners suffered their first loss of the year as the Red Sox rallied in the 9th, 7-6.

Let’s see owned baseball on March 28, 2019
Earning Full WOBs:
Tim Beckham continued his torrid start, homering twice off of Sale, driving in 3, and making a sparkling defensive play as the Mariners pounded the defending champion Red Sox, 12-4.
José Berríos out dueled Kluber, taking a shutout into the 8th and finishing with 7 2/3 scoreless frames, striking out 10 Indians, giving the Twins a 2-0 opening day victory.
Jacob deGrom struck out 10 Nationals over 6 shutout innings, walking 1 while earning the 2-0 decision for the Mets.
Joc Pederson homered twice and doubled, driving in 4 to help the Dodgers bomb the Diamondbacks, 12-5.
Earning 1/2 WOBs:
Elvis Andrus went 3 for 4 with a homer and 2 RBI but the Rangers were clobbered by the Cubs, 12-4.
Max Scherzer pitched brilliantly into the 8th, striking out 12 Mets in 7 2/3 innings. But he took the hard luck 2-0 loss for the Nationals.
Marcus Stroman shutout the Tigers over 7 strong innings, allowing 2 hits and striking out 7. He would not factor in the decision as the Blue Jays dropped the 2-0 final in 10 innings.
Kolten Wong homered twice in the Cardinals 5-4 defeat by the Brewers.

A New Season Begins… and a New Edition of Who Owns Baseball

The 2019 season is about to begin… and once again it is time to tally Who Owns Baseball.
Last year, Mike Trout took the honors for American League hitters. Javier Baez did for National League Hitters. Max Scherzer took home the title for National League pitchers. Justin Verlander did the trick for American League pitchers.
Will one of them repeat? Will someone else take the title?

Who Owns October and Who Owns the 2018 World Series (#WOO and #WOWS) Tallies Updated For October 27, 2018

What do you do if you have a negative narrative about you in the post season? You come up big in the World Series and rewrite the narrative.
David Price’s postseason woes are over. Done. Kaput. You can’t bring them up again. He ELWAYED them. Now his legacy is beating Verlander for the pennant, Kershaw for the World Series and going deep in both games… you know, like an ace does.
I personally would have given him World Series MVP, but with Steve Pearce launching all of those homers, it was a tough call.
But not tough in terms of figuring out who owned the World Series and October.
Each winning team for every post season game gets a pitcher and a hitter who earn a full WOO(Who Owns October.)
And at my discretion, I award a 1/2 WOO’S to a worthy player on the losing team.
But the World Series deserves its own stats. WOWS (Who Owns the World Series.)
At the end of the post season, we will see who had the highest WOO total as a pitcher and a hitter. The WOWS total will be kept separately. Each game now counts towards both tallies.

From October 28
2018 World Series Game 8:
Receiving 1 WOO and 1 WOWS
Steve Pearce homered in the first inning to put the Red Sox up 2-0 and added another shot in the 8th to put the Dodgers away, earning World Series MVP honors after the 5-1 final.
David Price pitched into the 8th, allowing 3 hits, 1 run and striking out 5 Dodgers in 7 plus innings, earning the 5-1 World Series clinching decision for Boston.
Receiving 1/2 WOO and 1/2 WOWS
David Freese homered on the first pitch of the bottom of the first and added a triple but the Dodgers could not hold off the Red Sox in the 5-1 clincher.
Clayton Kershaw kept the Dodgers in the game over 7 innings. But he let up 3 Boston homers along the way and the offense never woke up in the 5-1 loss.

Steve Pearce will never have to buy a drink in New England again
Between his pinch hit game tying homer in the 8th and the bases clearing insurance double in the 9th, Pearce took a game that looked like was going to knot up the Series to putting Boston on the brink of the title.
If Game 3 was as long as two games, Game 4 FELT like two different games. Part one was a tense pitcher’s duel. Part two was an offensive eruption.
You know a game is odd when it is 0-0 going into the bottom of the sixth, tied going into the 9th and a 2 run homer in the bottom of the 9th just gets a shrug.
Thus is the strange narrative of Game 4 of the 2018 World Series.
So who owned October and the World Series?
Each winning team for every post season game gets a pitcher and a hitter who earn a full WOO(Who Owns October.)

2018 World Series Game 4:
Receiving 1 WOO and 1 WOWS
Steve Pearce hit a game tying home run in the 8th inning and then cleared the bases with a 9th inning double to lead the Red Sox in a dramatic 9-6 comeback victory over Los Angeles.
Eduardo Rodriguez pitched with no days rest and had a shutout with 1 out in the 6th inning. While he tired and let up 4 runs, his effort allowed Boston’s wiped out bullpen a chance to reset and win the 9-6 Game 4 final over the Dodgers.
Receiving 1/2 WOO and 1/2 WOWS
Rich Hill dominated the Red Sox, taking a shutout into the 7th, allowing 1 hit, had one run charged to him because of the bullpen while striking out 7. But the Dodger bullpen had an absolute meltdown and turned a 4-0 LA lead into a 9-6 defeat.
Yasiel Puig launched a towering 3 run homer that gave the Dodgers a seemingly safe 4-0 lead in the 6th. The Red Sox would score 9 unanswered runs to take the game, 9-6.

Is Game 3 Over?
Will anyone be left standing for Game 4?
When Ernie Banks said “Let’s play two”, he meant it as a metaphor. The Dodgers and Red Sox played the equivalent of two and along the way showed how insane the concepts of “Win and Loss Decisions” are.
Walker Buehler pitched brilliantly, throwing 7 shutout innings. No decision.
Nathan Eovaldi threw one of the greatest relief performances in World Series history. Loss.
Alex Wood threw 1 inning out of 18. Victory.
Bananas. The Red Sox were a bad Ian Kinsler throw away from winning and taking a 3-0 series lead. Now they will be forced to start Drew Pomeranz and the Dodgers have images of tying the Series, 2-2 and giving the ball to Kershaw in Game 5.
And oh yeah, Max Muncy hit the first Dodger walk off homer in the World Series since Kirk Gibson’s shot in 1988. Maybe you have seen it.
So who owned October and the World Series?

2018 World Series Game 3:
Receiving 1 WOO and 1 WOWS
Walker Buehler was brilliant, throwing 7 shutout innings, holding the Red Sox to 2 hits, no walks and 7 strikeouts. The bullpen blew his lead but the Dodgers would win the 18 inning marathon, 3-2.
Max Muncy reached base 4 times and ended the 18 inning classic with a walk off homer to give the Dodgers a 3-2 victory over Boston.
Receiving 1/2 WOO and 1/2 WOWS
Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a 2 out game tying homer in the 8th that set in motion the never ending extra inning affair between the Dodgers and Red Sox. He would collect another hit and walk two more times but Boston fell in the 18th, 3-2.
Nathan Eovaldi put on one of the great relief performances in post season history, holding the Dodgers to 1 unearned run and 2 hits over 6 super high pressure innings. But he could not stretch it to 7 as he surrendered Muncy’s homer and took the brutally tough 3-2 loss for Boston in 18.

Who Owns October and Who Owns the 2016 World Series (#WOO and #WOWS) Tallies Updated For October 24, 2018

Now David Price can’t STOP winning post season starts.
He gave the Red Sox good old fashioned quality start while Mookie Betts and company shrugged off a 2-1 hole in the game to put the Dodgers down 2 games to none.
Was this the last game played at Fenway this year? It could be.
So who owned October and the World Series?
Each winning team for every post season game gets a pitcher and a hitter who earn a full WOO(Who Owns October.)
And at my discretion, I award a 1/2 WOO’S to a worthy player on the losing team.
But the World Series deserves its own stats. WOWS (Who Owns the World Series.)
At the end of the post season, we will see who had the highest WOO total as a pitcher and a hitter. The WOWS total will be kept separately. Each game now counts towards both tallies.

2018 World Series Game 1:
Receiving 1 WOO and 1 WOWS
Mookie Betts went 3 for 4 with a double and a run scored to lead Boston’s offensive attack to a 4-2 win over the Dodgers.
David Price gave the Red Sox 6 strong innings, allowing 3 hits and 2 runs while striking out 5 Dodgers and earning the 4-2 decision.
Receiving 1/2 WOO and 1/2 WOWS
Yasiel Puig singled home a run that briefly gave the Dodgers the lead. The Red Sox would come back to take the 4-2 final.

Who Owns the World Series (WOWS) is Back for the 2018 Fall Classic

It is not enough just to own October… One must own the WORLD SERIES!
In the regular season, I had “Who Owns Baseball?” aka WOB. The explanation is here.
Then the post season came about and thus was born “Who Owns October?” aka WOO. A full explanation is here.
The player and pitcher who each winning team gets a WOO. If someone on the losing team has an admirable performance (I’m looking at YOU, Justin Verlander), then they would receive 1/2 a WOO.
But the World Series is different. People complain that postseason stats and World Series stats are combined, resulting in Bernie Williams and David Ortiz‘s stats dwarf Mickey Mantle‘s and Babe Ruth‘s because of the additional rounds.
So back in 2013 in my Twitter feed came this suggestion from one of my most loyal readers and listeners.

I am going to continue to keep track of WOO to see who has the best tally for the entire Postseason.

Yasiel Puig has a tendency to talk a big game. But guess what? He backs it up. And with one swing of the bat he turned a potential Game 7 thriller into a foregone conclusion.
Meanwhile a parade of Dodger relievers kept the Brewers off of the scoreboard after Yelich’s first inning homer.
Dodgers are off to play the Red Sox. The Brewers came oh so close.
So who owned October?
Each winning team for every post season game gets a pitcher and a hitter who earn a full WOO (Who Owns October.)
And at my discretion, I award a 1/2 WOO’S to a worthy player on the losing team.
At the end of the post season, we will see who had the highest WOO total as a pitcher and a hitter.

NLCS Game 7:
Receiving 1 WOO
Ryan Madson threw 1 2/3 clutch innings of shutout relief, allowing just 1 hit, striking out a pair of Brewers and earned the pennant clinching 5-1 decision for the Dodgers.
Yasiel Puig got 3 hits, including the back breaking 3 run shot, that put the game out of reach as the Dodgers clinched the pennant in Milwaukee, 5-1.
Receiving 1/2 WOO
Josh Hader kept the Dodgers off the board with 3 dominating shutout innings, striking out 4. It was too little too late as the Brewers lost, 5-1.
Christian Yelich homered in the first inning to send Milwaukee into a frenzy. It would short lived as the Dodgers rallied to clinch the pennant, 5-1.

As the Red Sox kick their feet up, relaxing from their pennant clinching yesterday, the NLCS is down to a Game 7. I guess it is appropriate after the regular season ended with a pair of Game 163 match ups that the National League title is undecided until the last possible moment.
The Dodgers homered in the opening batter, making Milwaukee wonder if they were done. 4 runs in the first changed all of that.
So thanks to Jesús Aguilar and company, the National League will be decided on Saturday. And Corbin Burnes made sure Josh Hader is rested and ready for Game 7.

Rafael Devers broke the Astros back with a 3 run homer that led the Red Sox to a pennant winning 4-1 victory.
David Price finally won a post season start, throwing 6 shutout frames, striking out 9 Astros as the Red Sox clinched the game and the series, 4-1.
Receiving 1/2 WOO
Marwin Gonzalez homered to provide the lone offensive highlight for the Astros in their 4-1 loss to Boston.
Justin Verlander was solid through 5 innings but allowed a 3 run homer in the 6th and the Astros were eliminated by Boston, 4-1.

I guess Clayton Kershaw is getting sick of the “Kershaw can’t pitch in October” narrative. He was great in the Division Series, not so great in his first outing in the NLCS. But look at what we’ve got here!
Kershaw pitched like an ace, 7 innings, 3 hits, 1 run and 9 strikeouts, putting the Dodgers on the brink of their second straight World Series and a date with the lone hole in his Hall of Fame resume.
Meanwhile Andrew Benintendi should have been credited with the save with an all time brilliant catch with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th to put the Red Sox up 3-1 over Houston.

Receiving 1 WOO
Andrew Benintendi doubled twice, scored twice and made a game saving catch with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th to seal the Red Sox heart stopping 8-6 victory over Houston.
Ryan Brasier got 5 key outs from the bullpen, allowing no runs and helped Boston beat Houston, 8-6.
Clayton Kershaw dominated Milwaukee, striking out 9 in 7 innings and earning the 5-2 victory for Los Angeles.
Justin Turner reached base 3 times, driving in a run and scoring another to help the Dodgers beat the Brewers, 5-2.
Receiving 1/2 WOO
Lorenzo Cain singled, doubled and drove in a run, but the Brewers fell short against the Dodgers, 5-2.
George Springer reached base 4 times, including a homer, but the Astros lost a dramatic 8-6 game to the Red Sox.

Jackie Bradley Jr. is hitting the hardest .200 I’ve ever seen in a series. He doesn’t get many hit, but MAN he makes them count.
The Red Sox were already up 4-2 when he came up with the bases loaded and two outs in the 8th. J. D. Martinez and Steve Pearce already made their marks with the bat. Nathan Eovaldi continued to be the ace of the post season.
But Jackie Bradley Jr.’s grand slam put the game away and suddenly put the Red Sox, who looked over matched in the series opener, in the driver’s seat.
Meanwhile, the Dodgers took a 13th inning thriller to make sure their NLCS will be a potential classic. Cody Bellinger didn’t start the game, but he made sure to end it.
So who owned October?

NLCS Game 4:
Receiving 1 WOO
Cody Bellinger came off the bench to go 2 for 4, including the walk off 13th inning single, giving the Dodgers a 2-1 win over the Brewers.
Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a 2 out 8th inning grand slam that broke the game wide open, giving the Red Sox an 8-2 victory over the Astros.
Nathan Eovaldi threw 6 strong innings, holding Houston to 2 runs, earning the 8-2 decision for the Red Sox.
Kenley Jansen threw a pair of critical shutout innings in relief to set up the Dodgers dramatic 2-1 extra inning defeat of the Brewers.
Receiving 1/2 WOO
Jose Altuve reached base three times and scored both Astros run but they would fall to Boston, 8-2.
Ryan Braun collected 3 hits but was stranded each time in the Brewers 2-1 extra inning loss to the Dodgers.
Dallas Keuchel worked through early trouble to give the Astros 5 innings, allowing 2 Boston runs. The bullpen would drop the 8-2 final.
Freddy Peralta came out of the bullpen during a second inning emergency. He responded with a 3 inning shutout and no hit post season debut, striking out 6 Dodgers along the way. The Brewers would fall in 13 innings, 2-1.

Walker Buehler threw 7 strong innings, striking out 8 Brewers, but he also let up a back breaking homer that sealed the Dodgers 4-0 loss.
Manny Machado reached base 3 times including a double in a 9th inning rally that failed to cash in for the Dodgers who dropped the 4-0 game to the Brewers.

ALCS Game 1:
Receiving 1 WOO
Alex Bregman reached base 4 times, scored twice and made several terrific defensive plays to shut down the Red Sox attack and push the Astros to a 7-2 victory.
Kenley Jansen slammed the door on the Brewers with a scoreless ninth, retiring Yelich with 2 outs and the tying run on, earning the save for the Dodgers 4-3 victory.
Justin Turner got a pair of hits including a dramatic come from behind 2 run homer to lead the Dodgers past Milwaukee, 4-3.
Justin Verlander had one bad inning but dominated the Red Sox for the other 5, allowing 2 hits and 2 runs and striking out 6 to earn the 7-2 decision for Houston.
Receiving 1/2 WOO
Orlando Arcia broke a scoreless tie with a homer. The Brewers fell just short to the Dodgers, 4-3.
Matt Barnes kept the Red Sox in the game with 1 1/3 hitless shutout innings, but the Astros piled on late to win, 7-2.
Steve Pearce got one of the Red Sox three hits and scored one of their two runs in Houston’s 7-2 victory.
Wade Miley threw 5 2/3 shutout innings, walking none and striking out 3 Dodgers. He even got a pair of hits and scored a run. But Milwaukee’s bullpen had a rare off day and blew the game, 4-3.

Didi Gregorius went 2 for 4, drove in a run and kept the Yankees’ 9th inning rally alive with a single but they fell just short to the Red Sox, 4-3.
David Robertson shut down the mighty Boston attack with 1 2/3 innings of no hit shutout ball, striking out 4. It was too little too late as the Yankees were eliminated in the 4-3 Game 4 final.

Brock Holt hit for the cycle and wasn’t even the star of their game! Nathan Eovaldi became the ace of the post season and it is safe to say the Red Sox not only owned October but owned the Yankees.

National League Division Series Game 4
American League Division Series Game 3:
Receiving 1 WOO
Pedro Baez threw 1 1/3 key shutout innings, preventing the Braves from rallying and preserved the lead for the Dodgers as they clinched the Division Series in a 6-2 Game 4.
Nathan Eovaldi dominated the Yankees over 7 innings, allowing 5 hits and 1 garbage time run, to earn the easy 16-1 decision for the Red Sox.
Brock Holt hit the first ever post season cycle, homering in the 9th of Boston’s 16-1 humiliation of the Yankees.
Manny Machado went 2 for 5, homered and drove in 4, as the Dodgers came from behind to top Atlanta 6-2 and advance to the NLCS.
Collin McHugh threw 2 no hit shutout innings, striking out 4 Indians and walking none to earn the 11-3 victory for Houston.
George Springer got 3 hits and 2 homers to lead the Astros in a late charge to eliminate the Indians with an 11-3 final.
Receiving 1/2 WOO
Mike Clevinger struck out 9 Astros over 5 innings, holding the champs to a single run. But the Indians bullpen and defense betrayed him in the 11-3 elimination loss.
Francisco Lindor hit a go ahead homer and added another hit. But the Indians could not hold off the champion Astros, 11-3.
Kurt Suzuki hit a 2 run pinch hit single that briefly gave the Braves the lead. They could not hold the Dodgers, who rallied for a 6-2 win.

Who Owns October (#WOO) Tallies Updated For October 4, 2018

Christian Yelich is still owning baseball even if it is October. He and Giancarlo Stanton have each homered in their first post season game. Little solace for Marlins fans.
Meanwhile Hyun-Jin Ryu has no time for Bull Penning and gave the Dodgers a good old fashioned solid playoff start.
So who owned October?
Each winning team for every post season game gets a pitcher and a hitter who earn a full WOO (Who Owns October.)
And at my discretion, I award a 1/2 WOO’S to a worthy player on the losing team.
At the end of the post season, we will see who had the highest WOO total as a pitcher and a hitter.

From October 4
National League Division Series Game 1:
Receiving 1 WOO
Max Muncy hit a 3 run homer and was walked 3 times to power the Dodgers past Atlanta, 5-0.
Hyun-Jin Ryu threw 7 shutout innings, striking out 8 Braves and walking none to earn the 5-0 win for the Dodgers.
Brandon Woodruff held the Rockies hitless over 3 shutout innings, striking out 3 and helped set up the Brewers 3-2 extra inning victory.
Christian Yelich reached base 4 times, including a 2 run homer that put Milwaukee on the board. The Rockies would tie the game in the 9th but the Brewers walked off 3-2 in the 10th.
Receiving 1/2 WOO
Charlie Blackmon drove in the first run in the Rockies game tying 9th inning rally. The Brewers would come back to win, 3-2 in 10.
Freddie Freeman got one of the few hits off of Ryu and made a fine catch into the stands. But it was not enough as the Braves were blanked by the Dodgers, 5-0.
Sean Newcomb stopped the bleeding by coming out of the bullpen in the 3rd and throwing 2 shutout innings. The Braves were still shutout by Los Angeles, 5-0.
Antonio Senzatela performed well in his surprise start, working around a homer to hold the Brewers to 2 runs over 5 innings. He did not factor in the decision as the Rockies fell in 10, 3-2.

Who Owns October (#WOO) Tallies Updated For October 2, 2018

Not a bad way to start the playoffs, eh? A 13 inning marathon whose great starting pitching was regulated to footnote as one of the most unlikely of players became an October hero.
I almost gave the WOO to Trevor Story, who got 3 hits and scored the eventual winning run. But honoring Wolters was too great to pass up.
So who owned October?

National League Wild Card Game:
Receiving 1 WOO
Kyle Freeland threw a shutout into the 7th, finishing with 6 2/3 innings, no runs and struck out 6 Cubs. He did not get the decision but the Rockies held on to win 2-1.
Tony Wolters did not start the game but delivered the 2 out 13th inning RBI single that put the Rockies up for good as they topped the Cubs, 2-1.
Receiving 1/2 WOO
Javier Baez smacked a double that tied the Wild Game at 1 in the 8th inning. The Cubs would go on to drop the 2-1 final to Colorado.
Jon Lester kept the damage to a minimum after a 1 run first inning. He settled down struck out 9 Rockies in 6 innings and did not get the decision in the Cubs 2-1 extra inning loss.

Well that is it for the regular season. Two down to the wire races for the top pitching spots, one player came from behind to take a hitter’s position and the best player in baseball took control early and never let go.
So Who Owned Baseball in 2018?
AMERICAN LEAGUE HITTER
MIKE TROUT finished with 10 1/2 WOB, finishing ahead of Mookie Betts with 8 and Francisco Lindor with 7.
NATIONAL LEAGUE HITTER
JAVIER BAEZ ended the year at 8 1/2, leap frogging Scooter Gennett at 7 1/2 and Bryce Harper’s 6 1/2. Christian Yelich reached 6 1/2 with his late season surge.
AMERICAN LEAGUE PITCHER
JUSTIN VERLANDER edged out Corey Kluber by a count of 10 1/2 to 10. Carlos Carasco was right behind them at 9. Chris Sale led the league for most of the season but injuries slowed him down and he finished tied for 4th with José Berríos at 8.
NATIONAL LEAGUE PITCHER
MAX SCHERZER took advantage of the full WOB and 1/2 WOB rules and edged Jacob deGrom, 12 1/2 to 12. Aaron Nola was third with 10.

SPECIAL RULES FOR TODAY!
Because of the two Tie Breaker Games, I will treat WOB like the post season. Each game will get full WOBs and 1/2 WOBs as I see fit.

Orlando Arcia went 4 for 4, scoring 2 runs to help the Brewers clinch the Central with a 3-1 Tie Breaker win over the Cubs.
Walker Buehler dominated the Rockies into the 7th, throwing 6 2/3 shutout innings, striking out 3 and getting the 5-2 clinching victory for the Dodgers.
Jhoulys Chacin kept the Cubs from a big inning by allowing only a solo homer over 5 2/3 innings to earn the 3-1 decision for the Brewers.
Max Muncy got 2 hits, including a 2 run homer, to lead the Dodgers past the Rockies in the NL West Tie Breaker, 5-2.

Charlie Blackmon sparked the Rockies into an NL West play in game by hitting for the cycle, driving in 3, in the 12-0 blow out over Washington.
Noah Syndergaard finished a frustrating Mets season with a wonderful complete game 5 hit shutout, blanking the Marlins 1-0.
Jefry Marte reached base 3 times, including a homer and was on base for the walk off homer to end the Angels seasons with a 5-4 win over the A’s.
Roenis Elias allowed 1 hit over 5 shutout innings as the Mariners topped Texas, 3-1.
