From Cuba to Japan, Opening Day to the World Series and the WBC
These 2 MLB Players have Unexpectedly Boosted Their Trade Value This Season
Just like beauty, MLB trade value is in the eye of the beholder. What one interested team deems as desirable may not float the next team’s boat and vice versa.
The non-waiver trade deadline is at the end of July (or in this case, the beginning of August) for a reason. Not only does it allow teams to figure out if they have a chance at contending, but it also gives players time to show whether or not they’re worth the inherent risk that comes with acquiring them.
Some players who carried trade value on Opening Day have either maintained or enhancedit – Jonathan Lucroy and Jay Bruce come to mind – while others lost what little value they appeared to have left – like Matt Kemp.
Then, there’s another group of players that already had zero value, but have surprised everyone with their current performance. And since this level of play has been sustained through the first half of the season, there’s a good chance they’ll be wearing a different uniform within the next few weeks.
Outside of relief pitchers, the midseason trade market may not be as robust as in recent years. Teams in need of a boost must overturn every rock to find the value needed in order to reach the postseason and find success. That can lead front office executives down some unlikely paths, but these two players in particular seem more unlikely than the rest.
Sully Baseball Daily Podcast – June 30, 2016

I recorded a podcast in Willimantic, Connecticut. It is the town where I was born and it means very little to me.
This leads to my wondering why we put so much stock in admiring home grown talent.
It is a “tracing back my roots” episode of The Sully Baseball Daily Podcast.
Brian McCann, Matt Moore, Max Scherzer, Daniel Murphy, Michael Bourn, Eduardo Nunez, and Carlos Martinez all added to their totals for Who Owns Baseball yesterday.

Daily Matchups for 6/30/2016
Pitcher
Madison Bumgarner– This is a dream matchup for MadBum tonight. He’s facing a lackluster Athletics team which he has been able to hold to a .264 BA (23 for 87) with 21 strike outs to 7 walks. He has given up for HRs but this is being played in Oakland and I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets 10 Ks tonight.
John Lackey- Can anyone stop these Cubs? Lackey is facing the Mets who love to strike out lately. He’s held them to a .261 BA (41 for 157) with 29 strike outs, 29 fly outs (spacious Citi Field) and 37 ground outs while only giving up 3 HRs. He’s a middle of the pack priced pitcher with a great matchup who will go overlooked with Bumgarner up as well.
Catcher
Wilson Ramos– Love him against a lefty in Finnegan. He’s 1 for 3 with a HR against him.

Could Jose Altuve Win The American League MVP Award?
Houston Astros’ second baseman, Jose Altuve, has had quite an impressive 2016 season so far. He has been so impressive that he could be a legitimate contender for the American League Most Valuable Player Award. He has some very tough competition that includes Mike Trout, Ian Desmond, Robinson Cano, Xander Bogaerts, David Ortiz and many more.
Altuve’s chances at the MVP award could drastically change considering there are still 84 games left in the season, but he is currently one of the favorites. His biggest competition will more than likely be Mike Trout, but Jose Altuve could have a huge advantage on Trout if the Astros continue to win. If Altuve leads the Astros to a playoff appearance, then he could be at a distinct advantage over Trout since the Angels will more than likely finish in the bottom half of the American League West.

5 Potential Trade Targets for the Dodgers
The Dodgers are quite possibly the most disappointing team in baseball. Despite Clayton Kershaw, who is baseball’s most valuable player by leaps and bounds in 2016, LA sits 8 games behind the Giants entering Tuesday night’s slate of games and are just 5 games over .500.
Max wrote a few weeks ago about how the Dodgers lack of roster balance was killing them and nothing has really changed. Scott Van Slyke and Trayce Thompson are good ball players, but they can’t be starters on a World Series contender, especially not when stars like Adrian Gonzalez and Yasiel Puig aren’t pulling their weight. Howie Kendrick is their left fielder. Kendrick is a second basemen though and the Dodgers are bending over backwards to find ways to get both Kendrick and Chase Utley in the lineup at the same time. That’s distressing because Kendrick is batting only .243 with virtually no power and a negative WAR. That’s not a guy you should be working to find a spot for; you should have better options.
Speaking of options, the Dodgers thought they had a lot of them for the 2-5 spots in their starting rotation. Unfortunately, injury has absolutely devastated their crop of starters and the healthy ones that remain haven’t been great. Scott Kazmir‘s ERA is closer to 5 than 4 and Hyun-Jin Ryu, Brandon McCarthy, Brett Anderson, and Alex Wood are all on the shelf. Anderson and McCarthy are on the way, but Wood was good but inconsistent before getting hurt and Ryu keeps having disappointing setbacks in his minor league rehab.
But all of those options just scream of pretty good. None of those guys are causing opposing managers to stay up at night dreading facing a tough pitcher. The same can be said of the lineup as a whole. It’s made up of a bunch of pretty good players, none of whom are really all that great. The problem with this approach is that the Major Leagues are tough and almost everyone is pretty good. So what’s another word for a majority of the Dodger’s roster right now? Average. Consider: the Dodgers only have three players worth more than 1 Win Above Average and the Dodgers’ 6th, 7th and 8th most valuable batters by that metric are starting pitchers.
Essentially, the Dodgers need an influx of talent to give them a jolt. They need a top half of the rotation starter and a left fielder.

Who Will Be The Next Superstar Baseball Prospect Called Up?
Following the promotion of Lucas Giolito, MLB’s #1 overall prospect, many people are wondering who and when the next superstar prospect will be called up. There are quite a few people who come to mind when pondering this question. Some of those names include Alex Bregman, Manuel Margot, Alex Reyes, Orlando Arcia, Tyler Glasnow, Aaron Judge, and many more.
It is difficult to predict when a prospect is going to be called up, but it can be even harder to predict if that prospect is going to be a superstar. Every one of those guys listed above have the potential to be something special, but who will make that superstar impact this year? Could it be Alex Bregman taking over third base for the Houston Astros? How about Alex Reyes toeing the rubber in St. Louis? Both of those individuals will be superstars, but they are not who I have in mind.

The Atlanta Braves Need To Trade Julio Teheran, But It Might Not Happen
As it gets closer to the trade deadline, Atlanta Braves pitcher, Julio Teheran, is gaining more and more attention. Through five starts in June, Teheran has been absolutely dominant throwing 37.2 innings, with a 1.91 ERA, 17 hits against, 37 strikeouts, and only four walks. The Braves will bring in quite the haul if they decide to deal the right-hander to a competing team at the trade deadline.
So far in 2016, Teheran owns a 3-7 record, with a 2.46 ERA, 70 hits against, 99 strikeouts, and 24 walks in 106 innings pitched. Pay no attention to the record since he is currently playing for the worst team in baseball, but this might not be for long. Many teams have expressed interest in Teheran, including the Boston Red Sox, Miami Marlins, Los Angeles Dodgers, Detroit Tigers, and other teams competing for a spot in the playoffs.
Teheran would help a competing team, but he may not be worth the price the Atlanta Braves are asking for. Not only is the price high, but there are some concerning factors that might show that Teheran’s success in 2016 could be a fluke.

Where Would the St. Louis Cardinals be Without Matt Carpenter?
Each year, there are normally one or two players on each MLB team where fans think, “Man, where would this team be without this guy on the roster?”
Here are some examples:
- How much worse would the Washington Nationals have been in 2015 without Bryce Harper’s MVP performance?
- Where would the New York Mets be right now without Yoenis Cespedes’ bat andNoah Syndergaard’s arm?
- Would the Houston Astros already be back over .500 if Jose Altuve wasn’t their second baseman?
That’s the kind of impact infielder Matt Carpenter has had on the St. Louis Cardinals.
It’s been an uphill battle for all contending NL Central teams not named the Chicago Cubs in 2016, and even with their small slump over the past week, things probably won’t get much easier. For most of the year, manager Mike Matheny has watched his club produce ho-hum results with a 39-36 record. Still, the Cards find themselves right in the thick of the NL playoff picture.
Overtaking the Cubs appears tough – they’re already 10 games back of Chicago – but they’re only 1.5 games behind the final Wild Card spot. Although he’s not that prototypical “superstar” player, St. Louis wouldn’t be where they are without Carpenter’s contributions in the leadoff spot.
We’re in a Golden Age of the Lefty Fastball
The 2016 baseball season is well underway and we’re seeing an even more drastic version of the trends that we saw last year: There are more strikeouts, more homeruns, and more challenges. And, notably, there has also been a steady increase in velocity across the league, assisted by the guys I’ll be highlighting here.
A “steady increase in velocity” might not be reason to stop the presses, but just soak in this Tweet real quick:
We’re basically seeing twice as many pitches thrown 95+ as we were in 2008. ¡2008!
Even left handers, typically a step behind (always a bit of a quirky species, lefties), are chucking it. Across the league, lefties are throwing the ball 95+ mph just around 7.5% of the time. That’s way more often the stereotype of the Tom Glavine-type, soft-tossing, corner-nibbler would have you believe, but it’s 2016 and elite velocity isn’t just left to the elite pitchers anymore (Chris Sale is joined in that 95+ lefty fastball club by some guy named Buddy Boshers out of the bullpen for the Twins).
So… I’m not just interested in guys that throw hard; I want guys who throw hard and make the ball move, and I want them to be left handed. (Truth: that lefty requirement is mostly an excuse so I can hopefully talk about Danny Duffy more, James Paxton for the first time, and because I already covered the right handed side of things with my Charlie Morton post from the start of the season (The Unbelievable Emergence of Charlie Morton), and basically because lefty’s are more fun.)
A common refrain among pitching coaches is that movement is just as important as velocity. Velocity can get you to the majors, but big league hitters will turn around 95+ fast if it’s straight. But when combined with some movement (and even better, control/command) 95+ is a high value commodity.
I’m after what I want to dub the best lefty fastball. Let’s start with the simple stuff: Who out there is throwing it 95+ most frequently? Note that the percentages here are for all pitches thrown, including the off-speed stuff.

The Washington Nationals Reynaldo Lopez on fire in Double-A
Wayne Cavadi's Online Portfolio
Reynaldo Lopez has been one of the more exciting prospects on the Washington Nationals pipeline for a few years now. The problems that plagued him were in showing consistency in his electric stuff, leaving many to wonder in Lopez had a future in the rotation or as a back-end of the bullpen weapon.
He may finally be figuring it out, and answering that question in 2016.
Lopez was signed out of the Dominican Republic in 2012, when he was just 18-years old. His 2013 full-season debut was cut short after just 5.1 innings pitched with arm soreness. Unfortunately, those 5.1 innings weren’t pretty to hang hope on, as he was shellacked for 10 runs on 15 hits, seeing his fastball velocity drop to the 80s.
2014 would see Lopez break out between two levels. Starting in Auburn and finishing in Hagerstown, he posted a 7-3 record behind a 1.08 ERA…

New York Yankees prospect on the rise: Nestor Cortes
Wayne Cavadi's Online Portfolio
The New York Yankees have an interesting pitching prospect developing in the far depths of their farm system. He isn’t on anyone’s top prospect charts. He doesn’t blow you away with awe-inspiring stuff. But he also doesn’t allow runs to score; it is time to take notice of Nestor Cortes.
(UPDATE from the author: This article ran at Today’s Knuckleball over the weekend. Cortes was called up to Double-A Trenton on Sunday, skipping over High-A Tampa in what appears to be an as needed situation in the bullpen. He recored an four inning save, allowing two runs while striking out five. He is still slated to pitch in Charleston this week, so he may still return to Low-A. The analysis remains the same below, as Cortes is an exciting under-the-radar prospect.)
Cortes is the 21-year old left-handed Yankees pitching prospect making a name for himself in the Low-A Charleston…

San Diego Padres Prospect Auston Bousfield Talks Baseball
The San Diego Padres have struggled to find their identity in recent seasons, finishing above .500 just three times in the last decade, entering the 2016 season. They last appeared in the playoffs in 2006 and don’t look like they will break that streak this year. However, if some of their young talent pans out, there may be a very bright future ahead. One of the young players who may play a role in the turnaround is speedy outfielder Auston Bousfield.

Exclusive Interview With 2017 Draft Prospect and UNC Tar Heel, J.B. Bukauskas
J.B. has an electrifying fastball and slider combination, which both have potential to be plus-plus pitches. He is also developing a change-up that many scouts believe could solidify him as a top of the rotation starter one day. It’s hard to say which pitch is his best between his fastball and slider. He sits between 93-96 MPH with his fastball, but his slider could be the best breaking ball in the 2017 draft class. His elite combination of pitches, command, and maturity on and off the mound should make him one of the top prospects in the 2017 MLB Draft.
He is one of the top arms in the Cape Cod League this summer. He is also playing with Team USA this summer in Japan, Taiwan, and Cuba.

Noah Syndergaard and His Fantasy Owners Dodge A Bullet
I checked my phone yesterday, as I got a notification, and my heart skipped a beat. The notification read, “Mets RHP Noah Syndergaard left today’s game after 6 innings because of elbow discomfort, will see team doctor.” First of all, I’m a huge fan of Thor. Second of all, I own him in two of my fantasy leagues. Third of all, I hate to see another young pitcher plagued by the dreaded Tommy John Surgery. Well have no fear folks, all Thor fans have dodged a bullet.

5 MLB Players Who Have Made Their Fast Starts in 2016 a Distant Memory
While getting off to a slow start is every ballplayer’s worst nightmare, getting off to a fast one is a dream come true. However, experiencing a great April doesn’t really matter much when the months to follow are full of struggles.
Just as we recently talked about certain hitters making their slow starts a distant memory, there are plenty of players who had a ton of fun in baseball’s first month of regular season play. Despite the best-case scenario coming true for them, it’s become a distant memory by seeing their overall stats head in the opposite direction — and pretty fast.
Here are five players who wish April never ended:
Astros’ Prospect, Alex Bregman, Hit In The Head By A 94 MPH Fastball
Many Houston Astros and fantasy baseball fans have been wondering when Alex Bregman will finally make his MLB debut. Unfortunately, it might be delayed after taking a fastball to the head on Monday night. Luckily Bregman got up on his own power and he seems to be okay, but he sat out last night as a precautionary measure. Hopefully this event doesn’t hurt Bregman physically or his approach at the plate.

Jen Pawol Assigned to Umpire Games in the Gulf Coast League
A media release from the Gulf Coast League:
PETERSBURG, Florida — The Gulf Coast League (GCL) today announced the hiring of umpire Jen Pawol for the 2016 season. Pawol (pronounced Powell) will be the first female umpire in the GCL since Pam Postema in the 1977-78 seasons, and becomes the first female umpire in Minor League Baseball since 2007.
Please San Diego, Use Ron Burgundy As Part Of The 2016 MLB ALL – Star Game Festivities!!

By Hugh Hawkins:
I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate the Mid-Summer Classic in 2016 by having Ron Burgundy be front and center at Petco Park. Hand him a microphone, and let him address the stands by saying “Stay Classy San Diego” . He couldn’t really say what he said at the lookout point in Anchorman “something about the meaning of San Diego”, but it would be awesome if he said ‘drink it up, it always goes down smooth.’
In a world where we have already seen a ton of cross promotion with celebrities and sporting events, this would be ideal. Will Ferrell (the man who plays Ron Burgundy) already suited up for 10 different teams in 2015 Spring Training, and toted the position of 10 different spots in the lineup, so this is a total no-brainer.
Burgundy is about as 100% sure thing there is for marketing campaigns. In the year following the Dodge Durango commercials featuring him, sales escalated 410% for the vehicle.
Let him throw out the 1st pitch, do interviews during the Home Run Derby, or help Chris Berman out with some strong color commentary. Heck. even bring the whole gang from Anchorman Channel 4 News team, but at least have him there. So as a fan of the character and actor, and for the betterment of humanity and baseball community, make this happen San Diego!
