New York Mets Must Improve in These 6 Areas in the 2nd Half
Manager Terry Collins and his New York Mets had to deal with what many viewed as a potentially season-defining 11-game homestand prior to the All Star break. On the surface, they succeeded by going 7-4 against the Chicago Cubs, Miami Marlins and Washington Nationals.
However, it was likely one of the most frustrating 7-4 homestands fans will ever experience because New York missed a golden opportunity.
The importance of this stretch prior to baseball’s midseason break was only magnified because the Mets arrived at Citi Field fresh off losing five of seven to the Nats and Atlanta Braves. The pitching staff continued to do their job for the most part, but it was the offense that resembled the 2015 squad before acquiring Yoenis Cespedes, not after.
This group then came alive by sweeping a four-game set against the Cubs, followed by taking two of three from the Marlins. Things continued looking up on Thursday, as New York battled back with the help of Wilmer Flores to win the series opener against Washington.
Those good feelings faded quickly as Stephen Strasburg, Max Scherzer and Daniel Murphy displayed why they’re All-Stars this year en route to the Nats winning three straight, building their NL East lead to six games.
Finishing the first half with a 47-41 record isn’t bad considering what New York has dealt with since April, but they must improve in these areas if they want to return to the playoffs this October:
[Video] Cubs’ Prospect Makes Catch of the Year, in MLB Futures Game

In Sunday’s MLB All-Star Futures Game Chicago Cubs’ prospect Eloy Jimenez launched himself over the railing and made an unbelievable catch in the MLB All-Star Futures Game.
Playing for the World Team, in the bottom of the 7th inning with 2 outs there was foul ball that nobody should have caught but Jimenez did just that. Even Matt Vasgersian couldn’t believe the catch. If anyone has played MLB The Show for Playstation the announcing made it sound like we were listening to the in-game broadcast. Couple that with the video game type catch, this was a heck of a showcase we look to continue watching the Cubs in the future.

The Black Prince of Baseball- Hal Chase and the Mythology of the Game: A Review
Before Babe Ruth, another mega star dominated the baseball landscape. His name was Hal Chase and he was a supremely talented and flawed athlete and human, who was ultimately overtaken by his demons and unceremoniously cast out of the majors because of his penchant for gambling and allegedly throwing games—which possibly included involvement in the 1919 Chicago Black Sox scandal. Detailing his rise and fall is Donald Dewey and Nicholas Acocella, with their excellent The Black Prince of Baseball: Hal Chase and the Mythology of the Game (University of Nebraska Press, 2004/2016).
Jose Altuve Taking a Page out of Bryce Harper’s Book During Monster Year
Just when it looked like Houston Astros second baseman (and now four-time All-Star) Jose Altuve couldn’t get much better at the plate, he proves us wrong.
Since debuting in 2011 as a 21-year-old, Altuve has displayed quite the ability to collect base hits. Not only does he already have a batting title under his belt, but also no American League player has collected more hits than him since 2014. As Houston continued building a powerful lineup around him, he was incredibly valuable to the club has a top-of-the-lineup table setter.
From 2014-15, he posted a .327/.365/.456 triple slash with 22 homers, 87 doubles, 125 RBI, 171 runs scored and 94 stolen bases. It can’t get much better than that, right? Since Altuve is in the midst of his sixth MLB season, we tend to forget that he’s still young and can actually improve.
That’s exactly what he’s done this year as a 26-year-old, and it seems like he’s taken a page straight out of Bryce Harper’s book in the process.
Chances are slim he actually chatted with Harper about it – and Harper isn’t the first young player to experience the kind of jump in production he did in 2015 – but it’s interesting to see two very different hitters experience similar results with regard to a similar shift in plate approach.

Minor League Baseball Remains a Budget-Friendly Entertainment Option
Minor League Baseball issued the following press release today:
Minor League Baseball Remains a Budget-Friendly Entertainment Option
Family of four can attend a game for an average of less than $65
PETERSBURG, Florida — Minor League Baseball announced today that attending one of its games is, yet again, one of the most economical forms of family entertainment available. The average cost for a family of four to enjoy a Minor League Baseball game this season is only $64.97; a price that includes parking, two adult tickets, two child tickets, four hot dogs, two sodas and two beers.
MLB Bans Red Sox From Signing Fat, Bad Players
Straight off the heels of their scandal of signing international amateur prospects against Major League Baseball rules, the Commissioner’s Office has set yet another ban to the Boston Red Sox disallowing the team from signing fat, crappy players for a full calendar year.
The Red Sox nearly violated the widely known rules against a team signing too many fat, crappy players when they signed third baseman Pablo Sandoval. “We realize what signing too many fat, crappy players can do to the competitive balance of the league,” said Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred. “If an organization has free rein to sign as many tubby lards as they want, then it gives all the other teams an unfair advantage to outrun, out endure, and just stay hydrated enough to finish a baseball game.”
Manfred added, “Luckily, Sandoval injured his shoulder so the other teams wouldn’t get too much of an edge.” Commissioner Manfred then impressively scarfed down an entire bowl of chili.
The penalty came as a surprise to the Red Sox organization. Some players praised the move, like current third baseman Travis Shaw.
“I’m just glad we have room on the bus to sit in our own seats because when some of our old fat, crappy players were on the team bus, there were only 25 seats on the bus, filling our 25-man-roster, and since our fattest, crappiest player took up two seats I had to stand,” Shaw said.

STUDS
Drew Pomeranz- Dodgers don’t hit very well vs. lefties. On a small slate, Pomeranz stands out as the top option with a high potential for strikeouts.
Trevor Bauer- Since the start of June he owns a 1.81 ERA and a WHIP under 1.00. He faces a Yankee offense that…..well, is just bad.
MID RANGE
Danny Duffy- Over 10 strikeouts per 9 innings and a WHIP under 1.00. Seattle is just middle of the pack vs. lefties.
Jason Hammel- Current Braves hitters actually have good numbers vs. him, but they are the Braves and haven’t been very good this year. I’d consider him a low owned tournament play.
VALUE
Doug Fister- Oakland bats really don’t scare me here and Fister has quietly been a solid arm this year, with an ERA of 3.66. Won’t strikeout many but could you a W if the Astros can get to Hill.

For Baseball Hall-of-Famer Fred Clarke, Mustaches Were a Hairy Subject
Facial hair is all the rage these days for those many, who spend inordinate amounts of time and money cultivating beards, mustaches and other elaborate whiskery concoctions. Although many ball players currently sport all manners of hair on their faces, it’s something that has not always been tolerated. An early opponent was Hall of Famer Fred Clarke, who came out swinging heavily in the press in 1905 when the question of mustaches was broached with his team.
It’s Time for the Colorado Rockies to Trade Carlos Gonzalez & Maximize Their Return
When it comes to being a Colorado Rockies fan, there are four guarantees in life: death, taxes, lots of runs being scored at Coors Field and Carlos Gonzalez trade rumors. The only difference now is CarGo doesn’t have the pleasure of Troy Tulowitzki joining him in those rumors because he’s already gone.
After posting a 92-70 record in 2009, the organization hoped their franchise cornerstones would help deliver winning baseball on a consistent basis in the Mile High city, but that hasn’t happened. Actually, it’s been the complete opposite – after going 83-79 in 2010, Colorado hasn’t sniffed a .500 record since.
It’s not surprising to see Colorado nearing the All-Star break with a 38-45 record. However, despite being a likely insurmountable 13.5 games behind the San Francisco Giants in the NL West, they’re a not-totally-crazy seven games back for the final NL Wild Card spot.
Even though they’re “technically” in the Wild Card race, getting another year of lackluster results should spur the Rockies to become sellers before the August 1 non-waiver trade deadline. It looks like the front office will eventually do that instead of fighting to earn a spot in a play-in game, according to Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post. The problem is Saunders doesn’t think Gonzalez will be one of the players they’ll deal. He also thinks the outfielder will still be on the roster in 2017. If this ends up being true, it’s a huge mistake given the circumstances.

STUDS
Johnny Cueto- Averaging 7 innings a start and 7.8 k per 9, and the Rockies fan at a 25% clip vs. right handlers on the road.
Sonny Gray- With DeGrom facing a Marliins team that has hit him fairly well, Gray facing a weak hitting Twins lineup puts him into consideration as one of the top options today.
MID RANGE
Jeremy Hellickson – Facing a Braves team that’s a combined 16-71 off him.
Tanner Roark – Brewers fan a ton, especially vs. RHP
VALUE
Shelby Miller – Almost anyone facing the Padres becomes an option. Arizona facing Rea gives him a shot at a win.
Michael Pineda – Been raking up the K’s after a slow start. Could make a case to flip flop Pineda and Hellickson, but Pineda was so bad early I’m considering him a value play. 6 innings with 10 K and a win could easily be reached in this one.

STUDS
Carrasco, Price, and MadBum…… All with sketchy match ups. I’m personally fading all three, if I had to choose one, I’d go Carrasco. He’s kept the Tigers in check with exception of Miggy, but the Tigers can blow up at any time. More of a tourney play.
MID RANGE
Masahiro Tanaka– Whitesox hitting a combined .224 vs him and he’s been pretty reliable this year.
AJ Griffin– Current Sox 9-38 off him and he’s limited the HR’s this year. Sox do appear to be heating up, so there’s some risk but he could pay off nicely,
VALUE
Tim Lincecum- Rays have made a lot of below average pitchers look good this year, they K a bunch vs righties and its in the Trop. Not high upside here, but 6 innings, 2 ER with 5-6 K’s and the W is a reachable line. And his price could allow you some big bats.

10. Tom Seaver (1967-1986)

George Thomas “Tom” Seaver was nicknamed “Tom Terrific” and “The Franchise.” He pitched from 1967-1986 for 4 total teams in his career.
MLB Stats:
311 Wins
3,640 strikeouts
61 shut outs
2.86 Career ERA.
Teams:

Cincinnati Reds (1977-1982)
New York Mets (1983)

These numbers are amazing and in 1992 Hall of Fame voters thought so as well. Seaver was inducted by the second highest percentage ever at 98.84% of the vote. Seaver and Mike Piazza are the only 2 Mets in the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown so far and Seaver and Gil Hodges are the only 2 Mets players who have had their numbers retired.
Career highlights and awards:
12x All-Star (1967-1973, 1975-1978, 1981)
1969 World Series Champion
3x NL Cy Young Award (1969, 1973, 1975)

No-Hitter (06/16/1978)
New York Mets Hall Of Fame
Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame
As you can see, Seaver had an established career and this is why he has made our list at Number 10.

Legendary Catcher Ray Schalk’s Escape as a Hostage From a Bowling Alley Armed Robbery
Ray Schalk has one of the most impressive baseball resumes one can find when combing through the annals of the game. The catcher had a distinguished 18-year playing career and was a “Clean Sox” on the infamous 1919 Chicago Black Sox before moving on to a career in coaching. He was ultimately inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1955 but nearly didn’t live to see that moment because of the time he was taken hostage by armed robbers at his bowling alley.

10 Hilarious Twitter Reactions to Bobby Bonilla Still Getting Paid by the Mets
While most people in America are preparing to celebrate the nation’s birthday, Bobby Bonilla is busy enjoying his second Christmas.
The New York Mets — who are in the midst of an important home series against the Chicago Cubs — have more important things to worry about, but they’ll never be able to escape this inevitable story when the calendar flips to July 1. While the former outfielder last played for the Amazins in 1999 and finished his MLB playing career in 2001, he’s still on New York’s payroll…until 2035. Since 2011, he’s been getting annual installments of $1,193,248.20 every July 1.
But why? Darren Rovell of ESPN broke down exactly how this all happened. Do the Mets get roasted for this every year because they’re the only MLB team doing this? Nope, they’redefinitely not alone there. It still gets everyone laughing/frustrated/some kind of emotion and Bonilla ends up trending on Twitter once a year.
There have been some awesome reactions, but these 10 have made me laugh the most:
The Cleveland Indians are only getting better with Zimmer and Frazier
Wayne Cavadi's Online Portfolio
The Cleveland Indians are red hot. The have an exciting young pitching staff, with an exciting double-play combo lighting things up atop their batting order. As they currently sit at 46-30 — amid an 11-game winning streak — with a commanding lead in the American League Central with the All-Star Break in sight, the best may actually be yet to come.
Centerfielder Tyler Naquin has played very well in his big league debut, and he is joined by nice pieces in Jose Ramirez and Lonnie Chisenhall in the Indians outfield, but they have two of the best outfield prospects in baseball working their way up the pipeline. Bradley Zimmer and Clint Frazier are learning the ropes side by side in Akron with the RubberDucks.
Frazier came to the Indians in 2013, when Cleveland drafted him fifth overall. After a solid half-season debut, the Indians were excited to see what the…
