Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (May.19) – Updated MLB Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

Michael Brantley got on base 4 times and launched a walk off, bottom of the 10th home run to give the Indians a 5-4 win over the Tigers.
Dallas Keuchel threw a shutout into the 9th before needing some help to finish the game. He ended up with 8 2/3 innings, 5 hits, 2 runs, 8 strikeouts and walked just one Angel, earning the 5-2 victory for the Astros.
Jason Heyward got on base 4 times, stole a pair and scored in two of the Braves rallies as they topped the Brewers 9-3.
Mike Leake pitched into the 7th inning, finishing with 6 2/3 innings of 1 run ball. He did not get the decision but helped set up the Reds’ extra inning 4-3 win over Washington.

Jose Fernandez simply dominated the Atlanta Braves. He pitched 8 shutout 2 hit innings, striking out 8 and walking 2. He also made an amazing fake throw to draw off a runner from third and record an out at the plate. The best baseball show in Miami won the game, 9-0.
Lyle Overbay got two RBI singles, including one in the 11th inning that gave the Brewers a 5-4 lead they would not give up against the Cardinals.
John Lackey threw another solid game, going 8 innings, letting up 2 runs and walking just 1. He got the decision for Boston’s 7-4 win against Tampa Bay.
Mike Zunino collected 4 hits, driving in a run and scoring another, leading the Mariners to a 6-3 win against the Yankees.

Kyle Seager had yet another multi homer game. He drove in 4 runs, including a 3 run, come from behind, 8th inning shot that gave the Mariners a stunning 6-5 win over the Rangers.
Starlin Castro went 3-4 with a pair of homers, leading the Cubs to a 4-0 victory over the high flying Milwaukee Brewers.
Collin McHugh pitched into the 9th, going 8 2/3 innings, letting up just 2 hits and 3 walks, getting the win as the Astros beat Oakland, 5-1.
Dillon Gee pitched 8 three hit innings, getting the 4-0 decision for the Mets over the Marlins.

Phil Hughes was terrific over 7 innings, letting up 4 hits, 1 earned run and no walks. He got the decision in the Twins’ 5-3 win over the Tigers.

John Jaso came off the bench to hit a dramatic 2 run homer that gave the A’s a 3-2 win in Anaheim.
Roenis Elias dominated the Rangers, pitching into the 7th, letting up just 1 run as the Mariners bats exploded to a 7-1 win..

Scott Kazmir dominated the Mariners with 6 innings of 2 hit shutout ball. He struck out 9 and walked none. While he didn’t get the win, he set up Oakland’s dramatic 3-0 victory.
Adrian Gonzalez homered in his 4th straight game, going 2-5 and drove in 3 as the Dodgers topped the Diamondbacks in Arizona (not Australia), 8-6.
Alexei Ramirez hit a 2 run, walk off, come from behind homer to give the White Sox a dramatic 4-3 win over the Indians.

Yu Darvish pitched amazingly well over 8 1 hit innings against the Astros. He struck out 9 and let up no runs. He got no decision but the Rangers won 1-0.
Grady Sizemore went 2-4 including a dramatic 3 run homer, giving the Red Sox a 4-2 win over the Yankees in the Bronx.

Jordan Lyles dominated the White Sox completely and in all ways. He pitched into the 7th inning, letting up 1 run and 5 hits over 6 2/3 innings. He also went 3-3 with a double and 2 runs batted in as the Rockies clobbered Chicago, 8-1.
Troy Tulowitzki contributed to the Colorado 8-1 blow out of the White Sox with a 3-3 performance. He doubled, homered and walked, missing the cycle by a triple.
Jackie Bradley Jr. had the second three hit game of his career. He drove in Boston’s first two runs and his bunt single led to a run scoring error. He would later score another run as he sparked the Red Sox 5-1 victory over the Rangers.
Jason Vargas pitched into the 9th inning, keeping the Rays off of the scoreboard until the final frame. He would finish with 8 plus innings, 4 hits and 1 walk, letting up only a solo homer as the Royals topped Tampa 4-2.

Alfredo Simon‘s start since he was on the 2011 Orioles was a gem. He went 7 innings, letting up 4 hits and only 1 walk and 1 run, getting the 2-1 Cincinnati win over the Mets.
Joe Mauer reached base 4 times, going 3-4 with a walk and scored twice as Minnesota topped Cleveland, 10-7.
Hanley Ramirez helped lead the Dodger attack against the Giants with a pair of homers, a double, 3 runs scored and 2 RBI. LA topped their rivals, 6-2.

Justin Masterson pitched seven shutout innings, letting up just 3 hits and 1 walk. He got a no decision, but his gem set up Cleveland’s 2-0 victory, spoiling the Oakland A’s home opener.
Anthony Rendon doubled in a run and scored the tying run in the 7th and broke open the game with a home run in the 10th as the Nationals came from ehind and stunned the Mets in their home opener, 9-7.
Adam Wainwright pitched seven shutout 3 hit innings, striking out 9 Cincinnati batters. He got the tense 1-0 win for the Cardinals in a sometimes bitter NL Central showdown on the road.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (March 30) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

Chris Denorfia got a pair of hits, drove in the go ahead run and an insurance run and made a nice running catch in right field, leading the Padres to a come from behind 3-1 win over Los Angeles.
Andrew Cashner looked sharp as San Diego’s opening day starter. He went 6 innings, letting up a single run, 4 hits and struck out 5. He got a no decision as the Padres beat the Dodgers 3-1.
Hyun-Jin Ryu deserved better than a no decision. In his second start of the season, the Dodger left hander threw 7 scoreless innings, surrendering just 3 hits and 3 walks, striking out 7. The bullpen coughed up the lead and the Padres won 3-1. But Ryu earned a 1/2 WOB.

Paul Goldschmidt’s 2 hits were in a losing effort for Arizona against Los Angeles in Sydney, but worthy for 1/2 a WOB.

For the second year in a row, I will be doing my own personal metric for the player and pitcher of the year.
It is called “WOB”.
I explained it last year HERE, but let me do my best to explain again, because I made some adjustments for the new season.
So what is WOB?
“Who Owns Baseball?” is my own personal “SullyMetric” for determining which player had the best performance of the day.
At the end of each day, I figure out which American League and which National League pitcher had the most memorable and admirable day. I declare each one of them as the ones who “Owned Baseball” for that day.
And because I am an absolute lunatic, I keep a tally for the whole season and see which player has the highest “WOB”.
It is not a random selection. Statistical analysis plays a big part in determining who adds to their WOB total. But there are other factors. Read the rest of this entry

Today on The Sully Baseball Daily Podcast, I review the finalists for the off season awards and give a good long look at the results of Who Owns Baseball (WOB.)
WOB was my great experiment to try and track players value based upon how they became the big performer of individual days, taking in account stats and the significance of the game.
Four of the final names very well might line up with the real awards.
But why are Matt Moore and R. A. Dickey there? Is that a flaw in WOB? Or is it a flaw in US?

“Who Owns October?” An explanation for the newest “SullyMetric”

The season is over and so ends the tally of my regular season stat “Who Owns Baseball” or WOB. The explanation for that stat can be found HERE.
In a nutshell, I gave credit to a National League pitcher and hitter and an American League pitcher and hitter every night who deserved a special spotlight. Some times it went to obvious recipients. A no hitter or hitting for the cycle was a surefire way to be recognized.
But sometimes a great relief performance or a clutch hit that didn’t shine in the highlights would earn a WOB.
Well now it is October and the stakes are high and a new metric is needed.
I was originally going to call it “Who Owns The Playoffs?” but I am half Italian in my ancestry and could not endorse “WOP.”
A follower of The Sully Baseball Daily Podcast named Daryl Spitzer (Twitter handle @yacitus) suggested “Who Owns October?”

Well that clinched it for me.
So it is “Who Owns October?” or “WOO.”
And here is how it works.
Each winning team of a post season game gets a pitcher and a hitter awarded a “WOO.”
The losing teams can get a pitcher and hitter to get 1/2 a “WOO” if they stood out in a losing cause. They will be awarded at MY discretion.
Why do I get that kind of power? Because it is MY stat.
So we will see at the end of the World Series who has piled up enough full or half WOO’s to claim October as their own.
Keep checking in and I will get the tally up to date tonight and update it after every playoff game.
There is no reason to yell WOO! after each game.

David Price went the distance, wiggling out of trouble and letting up just 2 runs as he beat the Rangers, 5-2 and gave the Rays one of the two Wild Card spots.
Evan Longoria nearly hit for the cycle, going 3-4, driving in a pair with a homer and was the offensive hero in the Rays 5-2 playoff ticket punching victory in Texas.
They all owned baseball on September 30, 2013.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (September.29th) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

Henderson Alvarez threw the 6th no hitter in Marlins history. He needed help from a run scoring wild pitch to end the game which he won and put himself in the history books, 1-0.
Hunter Pence brought the Giants back into the game with a 2 run single in the 7th then ended it with a walk off single in the 9th, polishing off a 7-6 win over the Padres.

Brad Miller homered twice and drove in 5 runs as the Mariners beat the AL West Champion A’s, 7-5.
Nathan Eovaldi pitched well over 6 innings, wiggling out of trouble and yielding only a single run against the Tigers. He did not get the decision but his pitching performance set up the Marlins 2-1 extra inning triumph.
Neil Walker launched a pair of home runs that sparked the Pirates power outburst while winning against the Reds 8-3 and clinched home field in the Wild Card Game..

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (September.27th) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

A.J. Burnett pitched 8 terrific innings against rival Cincinnati, earning the victory after yielding only 1 run and 5 hits. Pittsburgh topped the Reds 4-1 and put them on the verge of home field in the Wild Card game.
Matt Holliday reached base 5 times, homered and scored twice, leading the Cardinals to a 7-0 drubbing of the Cubs and a clinching of the NL Central title.
James Shields finished his first season in Kansas City with another terrific game. He went 7 innings, 4 hits, 1 runs, walked just one White Sox batter and struck out 10, earning his 13th win, 6-1.
Drew Stubbs powered the Indians a little closer to the Wild Card by getting on base 3 times, scoring all three times including a homer. The Tribe topped the Twins 12-6.

Jurickson Profar came off the bench to crush a walk off homer that kept the Rangers in the Wild Card hunt by topping the Angels, 6-5.
Tommy Medica got on base 3 times and scored the winning run in the bottom of the 11th, giving Padres fans something to cheer about in PetCo’s season finale, 3-2 over Arizona.
Alex Cobb was not intimidated by an emotional Yankee Stadium crowd. He kept New York off the scoreboard with 7 innings of 3 hit shutout ball, giving Tampa Bay the 4-0 victory and inched closer to the post season.
Tim Lincecum pitched what could have been his final game as a member of the Giants. He made it a good one, letting up only 2 runs over 7 innings. He did not get the decision but was the star of San Francisco’s 3-2 victory over the arch rival Dodgers.
