In order to accommodate our Coors Field lineup, we are going to forego any expensive pitcher on Monday, and go with flamethrowing Aaron Sanchez of the Jays against Jake Peavy in San Francisco

Peavy has bee the ultimate gong show the last several outings, and despite being back in the comfort of AT & T – it will still be tough to tame the high powered Blue Jays

While I am going with the clubs second tier offensive players you could certainly skip picking the Coors Field game – and implement Jose Bautista, Edwin Encarnacion against Peavy.

I am using the top of the Rockies lineup to bludgeon Rubby De La RosaCarlos Gonzalez at $3900 vs a RHP at home might be the value play of the night.

It would be nice if Russell Martin could kickstart his offense this year  I keep playing him as a cheap option on fantasy – but he has failed to deliver  Like teammate Troy Tulowitzki though, at least he doesn’t cost much money.  The latter I refuse to play now until he goes over the Mendoza Line for BA.

Love Aaron Sanchez in a big ballpark with Kevin Pillar running the ball down in the OF.  The Giants have a decent lineup of LHB, but Joe Panik has been hurt, and Brandon Crawford not to his 2015 standards yet.  Brandon Belt does scare me, but he is a different hitter at home.

Sanchez can strike out players at least – which will be crucial for this play.

I will be checking to see if they do switch EE in at 1B for Smoak, in which case I would switch to underperforming Prince Fielder vs Miguel Gonzalez (for $2700).

Disclaimer:  We based these rankings on best strength to win the World Series.  Therefore some teams that have an easier division to play in, with the least path of resistance to the postseason overall may be ranked a lot higher than a club who is equally talented, yet may play in a juggernaut of a division.

(1) (1)  Chicago Cubs (E) (24 – 6) :  A real bad day for the Cubs is battling with a team like Washington on Sunday, to see whether or not they are going to sweep them or go 3 – 1 in a series.

Yep, they swept the 4 game set in a 13 inning walk off HR by Javier Baez – to cap a 7 – 0 week. They are on pace for about 129 wins right now.

Depth of the Starting Rotation is looking solid with Jake Arrieta, Jon Lester, John Lackey, Jason Hammel (Killer J’s) and Kyle Hendricks.

Hector Rondon is not even needed in most leads, with the team almost at a +100 differential through 30 games,

(2) (3) Chicago White Sox (+1) (22 – 10) ( 4 – 2):  Chris Sale is 7 – 0, and may go Ron Guidry (circa 1979 on us).  If anyone will win 25 games in a year, it would be him or Jake Arrieta.

Bob Welch won 27 games in 1990 for the A’s was the last guy to do that.

Has anyone noticed that Brett Lawrie has an OBP closer to .400 – than his usual .310 – .320?

Jose Quintana is finally receiving some run support.  If Todd Frazier and Jose Abreu start hitting for BA, than look he the hell out.  We could see a “Windy City” World Series for the 1st time since 1906. Read the rest of this entry

MLB Daily Fantasy Picks (DFS) For FanDuel – 5/8/16

If you listened to us yesterday, then you fared extremely well as we did.  We said to play Clayton Kershaw – and stack the Milwaukee Brewers vs Brandon Finnegan with Ryan Braun, Jonathan Lucroy, Chris Carter and oh yes…Aaron Hill.

These guys amassed 5 HRs between them with (Hill clubbing 3 HRs and adding 7 RBI – including a Grand Slam in extra innings), so yeah we won some serious coin on FanDuel.

I am feeling like going against the norm today for the sample lineup.

While I will use Jake Arrieta on Draft Kings, and with other roster, I am betting that he may have a bad day.  The Cubs tend to let down on Sundays, as they have recently losing a few weeks ago to the Rockies.

Chicago also may let down because they have won 3 straight versus the Nats .

Tanner Roark has pitched better of late, and in a crazy bizarro maneuver – I am going to place a few hitters (Bryce Harper, Anthony Rendon and Danny Espinosa) against Arrieta, and also implore Roark against the Cubs.

The difference between the Pitchers was $3800.  That is too much budget to help the offense.

I am also using a stack with the visiting Detroit Tigers at Texas and LHP Martin Perez.  The ‘Motown Boys’ still are bargain value for all of their RHB

In my mix are: Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez, Justin Upton and J.D. Martinez.

Who Owned Baseball May 7, 2016 (Daily #MLB AL/NL Pitcher + Hitter MVP’s) + 2016 #WOB Standings

Bartolo Colon pitched into the 7th, finishing with 6 2/3 solid innings to earn the 6-3 decision for the Mets in San Diego. But most of all, he broke the internet with the first home run of his career that became one of the most joyful moments in recent baseball history.

Aaron Hill slammed three homers, including a 2 run shot that brought the Brewers to within one, a solo blast that tied the game in the 8th and a 10th inning grand slam that was the difference in the 13-7 slug-fest against the Reds.

Ian Kennedy slowed down a red hot Indians team with 7 shutout frames, allowing only 4 hits and 2 walks and got the 7-0 victory for the defending champ Royals.

Robinson Cano hit a pair of homers, including a go ahead blast in the tenth. He added two more hits for ten total bases and led the Mariners past Houston, 3-2.

They all owned baseball on May 7, 2016.

Washington Nationals Victor Robles leading impressive prospect brigade

Deep down on the Washington Nationals farm, there is an exciting trio atop the Hagerstown Suns lineup. Victor Robles, Max Schrock and Kelvin Gutierrez are lighting up the Sally in an offensive barrage that has the Suns sitting at 18-9 heading into the final two games of the weekend.

The Hagerstown Trio sounds more like a 1920s jazz group that an upstart gang of prospects. That is exactly what they are. All three are in the top ten in the South Atlantic League in batting average, and they combine to litter the top ten in nearly every other statistical category.

So, who are they?

Luis Severino’s recent struggles have brought up eerie, unpleasant memories for New York Yankees fans. Phil Hughes. Joba Chamberlain. Ian Kennedy. Ivan Nova. Manny Banuelos. Andrew Brackman. The past five years have heard the Yankees brass convincing people that their next ace was on the horizon, that their pitching prospects were indeed elite. The sad truth is that not since Andy Pettitte have the Yankees produced a starting pitcher with any sort of staying power.

Who Owned Baseball May 6, 2016 (Daily #MLB AL/NL Pitcher + Hitter MVP’s) + 2016 #WOB Standings

Jose Ramirez reached base four times, doubling twice, driving in five to help the Indians clobber their divisional rival Royals, 7-1.

Ben Zobrist got on four times, homering twice and driving in 4 as the Cubs beat the Nationals, 8-6.

Cole Hamels let up a lead off single and then didn’t allow another hit for 7 shutout innings, walking two Tigers and striking out 9 to earn the 5-1 victory for Texas.

Francisco Liriano struck out 10 Cardinals and allowed only 5 hits and 2 walks over 7 innings as the Pirates took the game 4-2.

They all owned baseball on May 6, 2016.

MLB Daily Fantasy Picks (DFS) For FanDuel – 5/7/16

You have to play Clayton Kershaw more now than ever on FanDuel.  It is actually easier to use him on the weekend, where there are day games available – with many bench player options.

While I may suggest players here, you should always check the starting lineups as they filter in tomorrow morning.

In DraftKings you can select more of a cheap 2nd pitcher alternative to compensate for the budget.

Since we did select Kershaw, we are also going to use the Brewers at home, in a right handed heavy stack versus the Reds Brandon Finnegan.

Ryan Braun, Jonathan Lucroy, Chris Carter and Aaron Hill will need to do the bulk of my damage on the lineup.  These guys must produce otherwise there is no chance at hitting on some money.

I searched for a few more bargains, and came up with a couple of veterans off to slow starts, but are capable of multi hi contests in Howie Kendrick and Alex Gordon.  Both priced to buy at $2300 each.

I rounded out the roster with taking a stab that Billy Hamilton will go off for some stolen bases attempts – and finally Nick Ahmed is the cheapest price on the board at $2000.

Despite the extreme heavy dollar number associated with Kershaw – you must play him!

Mission Impossible: Solving Jake Arrieta

His historic 2015 season, which culminated in receiving the NL Cy Young Award, was mind boggling from a statistical standpoint, especially the last two months of the season. During that stretch, which included 12 starts, he allowed just four earned runs in 84 IP (.41 ERA). Batters had a .182 OBP against Arrieta during the last two months of the season.

So far in 2016,  Jake Arrieta has picked up right where he left off last season.  He already has a no-hitter under his belt this season (just nine starts clear of his no-hitter from last season).

Is there a way to solve Arrieta?  I mean, no one certainly has shown that is even a remote possibility, but let’s take a look a bit further at what makes him so good, and see if we can draw any logical conclusions.

Diving into the numbers a bit further, it’s easy to see why Arrieta is so tough.  

In looking at his batted ball statistics, you will see a stark difference between 2015/16 (when seemingly out of no where became the best pitcher in baseball) and his previous seasons in the big leagues, where he found marginal success.

The Pittsburgh Pirates Are Not A Shifty Bunch

Pittsburgh are shifting less in 2016 and their pitching is worse. Are these two related?

The Pittsburgh Pirates have earned a reputation around the league of being a very analytical front office and with good reason. The use of FIP and xFIP to find value starting pitching is well known, but the shift is where the Pirates really earned their stripes as a numbers-centric team.

From 2013-2015, the Pirates shifted a total of 2,446 times, which was good for third in all of baseball behind only the Houston Astros and the Tampa Bay Rays, two teams with sabermetric driven front offices of their own.

M’s Are 5th Team To Complete 2016 MLB Runs Scoring Survivor: Have Won 5 Series In A Row

We are getting to the guts of these teams finally completing all of their scenarios, although it could be months before all 30 clubs get it done.

Last night, the Mariners doubled up the Astros 6 – 3, and are the 5th team to complete the 11th variation.  The best they can hope for is finishing 5th.  Some teams could still pass them with holding games in hand, and being on the verge of completion themselves.

Seattle has been red hot as a squad the last 15 days.  They have won 5 straight series, and have now taken the 1st game of a 4 game set vs Houston this weekend.

The Mariners stand at 1st in the AL West – with a 17 – 11 record, and are 12 – 4 on the road already.

Obviously this teams offensive depth is a lot stronger this year, with Dae Ho Lee, Chris Iannetta and Nori Aoki replacing futile numbers from the C, CF and 1B positions last season.

Robinson Cano has also operated at an MVP caliber clip with and MLB leading 30 RBI in 28 GP – among his 9 HRs and .918 OPS.

The Bullpen is a lot more solid than a lot of folks anticipated – and Taijuan Walker, Hisashi Iwakuma, Nate Karns and Wade Miley have provided Felix Hernandez backup – where the 1st had poor 1st halves to last season, and the last two gentlemen were not even on this Starting Staff in 2015.

With the ‘Stros struggling so mightily out of the gate, and the Rangers still awaiting on Yu Darvish, the M’s could really take the AL West by storm in 2016.

A lot of people predicted this kind of team in 2015, so I am not shocked to see it actually come to fruition early.  I still feel they need to upgrade at the CF position, and possibly at SS midway through the year, but the franchise should have no problem pooling its resources to make that happen.

On the other side of the game last night was Jose Altuve leading off the home half inning with yet another  HR.  It was the 6th time already he has done that, and his 9th jack overall.

For those scoring at home, Altuve is leading the MLB in OPS at 1.104 – and XBH at 23 (has a MLB leading 14 Doubles).  It is a shame that Houston has wasted his early start to a tune of a 10 – 19 record.

We are preparing an article on him later in the day.

What Runs Survivor is: A MLB team scoring 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 or (10+) in different games throughout the course of the season.

Once a club has one of these run totals once, you cross it off and keep going until they complete the 11 different variations.

Is Josh Hader the Milwaukee Brewers next great pitching prospect?

The list of great Milwaukee Brewers pitching prospects who panned out in the major leagues in the 2000s starts with Yovani Gallardo and, well, it pretty much ends right there. The Brewers front office did a lot of work this offseason to replenish a barren farm system. In doing so, they may have found that next great pitching prospect, as Josh Hader is off to a hot start in 2016.

So, who is Josh Hader?

Hader was drafted in the 19th round of the 2012 draft by the Baltimore Orioles. Selected 581st overall, the 6-foot-3 lefty has been well traveled ever since. He was first traded to Houston in the deal that brought Bud Norris to the Inner Harbor in 2013, only to be traded by Houston last season at the deadline to Milwaukee in the Carlos Gomez blockbuster. Who Owned Baseball May 5, 2016 (Daily MLB AL/NL Pitcher + Hitter MVP’s) + 2016 #WOB Standings

Colin Rea took a no hitter into the 7th and a shutout into the 9th.He finished with 8 plus innings, 3 hits and 1 walk to earned the 5-3 decision over the Mets in San Diego.

Kevin Gausman threw 8 innings of 3 hit shutout ball, walking no Yankee batter. He did not get the decision but the Orioles won 1-0 in extra innings.

Trevor Story homered again and got two other hits, driving in 3 as the Rockies humiliated the Giants, 17-7.

Edwin Encarnacion drove in 6 runs, reached base 4 times and homered in the Blue Jays 12-2 blow out of Texas.

They all owned baseball on May 5, 2016.

P – Noah Syndergaard (vs. San Diego Padres): $12,900. This is a no brainer, even at this steep price. Syndergaard is one of the best pitchers in baseball and he is facing the worst offense in baseball.

To top it all off, he is facing this offense in a pitcher’s park. In his first 5 starts, he has thrown 32.1 innings, with a 2.51 ERA, 44 strikeouts, and only 6 walks. Keep an eye on this game though because there is a good chance of rain.

Syndergaard is averaging 26.1 points per game on Draft Kings this season.

P – Danny Salazar (vs. Kansas City Royals): $8,800. Salazar’s price has dropped, but his value continues to rise. He will be facing the Royals offense on Friday, but they haven’t been great this season.

They currently rank as the 16th best offense in the Major Leagues. Also, the weather is in Salazar’s favor. There is a 10 MPH wind towards home plate, which means baseballs should stay in the park.

In 175 at bats against Salazar, the Royals’ lineup is only batting .234, with 42 strikeouts. Salazar is currently averaging 21.6 points per game on Draft Kings this season.

2016 MLB Runs Scoring Survivor: Nats 4th Team To Complete With Drubbing Of KC

Washington knocked off the Royals 13 – 2 to take the series 2 games t0 1 (should have been a sweep – Jonathan Papelbon), and used HRs from Bryce Harper and Daniel Murphy to plate 13 men.

It was the 1st time the Nats had scored 10 runs all year, and in doing so, it eliminated their last scenario out of the 11 in MLB Runs Scoring Survivor.

Seeding is yet to be determined as they have played games more than several other clubs who could still get there before 27 games, but it is done regardless.

Washington joined the winners (Cubs), O’s (AL winners, and only team to finish in Junior Circuit thus far), and the SF Giants as teams that are complete.

Only Atlanta has not scored at least 10 runs during a game in the Senior Circuit.

Surprisingly there are 7 squads in the AL who have score 10 in a contest so far in this campaign.  (Boston and Toronto are the clear outliers here.)

Other clubs yet to have that many are the Tigers, Royals, Twins, A’s and Angels. 

The Cardinals (for example) have done the feat 6 times already, and that is why they are trailing in the variations with 7.

The National League is taking the fight to the American League with this – even with the pitcher slot in the lineup.

6 Big Disappointments So Far During The 2016 MLB Season

One month does not a baseball season make, but it still doesn’t mean we’re not pulling our hair out due to incredibly sluggish starts from normally dependable players.

As the calendar flips to May, those small sample sizes we’ve been talking about are getting big enough to become a legitimate concern.

With five months left on the regular-season schedule, there’s still plenty of time to turn things around, but it’ll take longer for stats to return to career norms.

Based on 2015 and what happened throughout the winter months, there were a bunch of players expected to make a significant impact on the field.

Now that April is in the books, we can see the opposite has happened. Here are six big disappointments so far during this young MLB season.

Tim Lincecum Could Be A Difference Maker For A Rotation In 2016

Tim Lincecum will pitch in front of upwards of 15 to 20 teams on Friday. He has been sidelined since last season due to arthroscopic hip surgery. He has been rehabbing for the last few months, and it looks as if he is finally ready to showcase his talents in front of scouts.

There are reports that he is already throwing in the low 90’s, which is great news for the right-handed pitcher.

As of right now, some of the reported teams who will be in attendance on Friday include the San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, Oakland A’s, Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, Texas Rangers, Houston Astros, Miami Marlins, Washington Nationals, and the Baltimore Orioles.

5 Things About the 2016 Boston Red Sox That Aren’t Being Talked About Enough

After finishing the 2015 season in last place, the Boston Red Sox look much better this year, currently on a pace for 93 wins. While some things have gone very well, there are others that have not.

Despite the chatter that seems to perpetually swirl around the team, some things haven’t received the attention they deserve. Here are five of them (keeping in mind the season is only about a sixth of the way over):

New York Yankees Must Make Changes To Take Advantage Of Their Greatest Asset

The New York Yankees entered 2016 with questions surrounding both the rotation and starting lineup, but nobody questioned one spot of the roster: the bullpen. Dellin Betances,Andrew Miller and Aroldis Chapman would combine for a three-headed monster of potentially historic proportions.

Games against the Bronx Bombers would basically be over before the seventh-inning stretch. Right?

While Chapman is still serving his 30-game suspension and hasn’t debuted yet, a sluggish April has prevented New York from utilizing what we all figured would be its greatest strength.

General manager Brian Cashman has toed the line between getting younger and remaining competitive for quite a while and has done a great job.

He found Derek Jeter’s successor in Didi Gregorius and despite not signing an MLB free agent this past winter, he made what appeared to be solid additions in Chapman, Starlin Castro and Aaron Hicks.

However, the one thing on Cashman’s to-do list that he couldn’t cross off was finding depth (or just better options) for the starting rotation.

He even sacrificed some depth by sending Adam Warren to the Chicago Cubs in the Castro trade.

This area was a cause for concern, but there seemed to be enough positives where an overwhelming bullpen would make up the difference.

It hasn’t.

This was supposed to be a down year for the Philadelphia Phillies. They were supposed to be transitioning from the years of mistakes that Ruben Amaro, Jr. (who incidentally went from GM to first base coach for the Boston Red Sox) made. They were supposed to be a few years away.

One full month into 2016, only four teams in all of baseball have a better record? What is going on in the City of Brotherly Love?

The Phillies can’t get ahead of themselves. This same thing happened to the Atlanta Braves last season. They came out of the gates hot, and even pulled some pieces off the table at the trade deadline when they were “still in it”, like Jason Grilli for example.
