Chicago Cubs Win Runs Scoring Survivor 2016 – Then Shutout Reds To Knock Them Out Of MLB Shutout Survivor

Jake Arrieta through his 2nd no hitter in just 12 regular season starts, and effectively eliminated Cincinnati from the quest to be the last team blanked in the MLB.

The Reds will finish no worse than 13th.

Chicago also wrapped up the MLB Runs Scoring Survivor when the Marlins failed to tally either 8 or 9 runs in their 5 – 1 win vs the Nats Thursday.  There are still plenty of things to look forward to in the contest, including who is the last to complete the journey.

What Runs Survivor is: A MLB team scoring 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 or (10+) in different games throughout the course of the season.

Once a club has one of these run totals once, you cross it off and keep going until they complete the 11 different variations.

A Bold Italic illustrates it has been done for runs by the club. We are also doing the MLB Shutout Survivor as well.

The Braves had themselves a bad day as an organization in the Disttict yesterday. Not only the whole Hector Olivera situation, but they fell to 0 - 8, were eliminated from the MLB Shutout Survivor contest, and face Stephen Strasburg today.

So the Braves have 8 straight losses to begin the year (as do the Twins) -but yesterday marked the 1st time they were bageled in those contests.  Can either of the Braves or Twins take a run at the 1988 Baltimore Orioles run of 21 straight defeats from the start of a season?

Out of the 9 clubs that been zeroed in the MLB, only 3 have come from the Senior Circuit (Mets, Braves and Padres, but San Diego has seen a donut 4 times on their scoresheet already.)

6 teams have suffered a Shutout in the AL, including the Yankees and Blue Jays – who I thought may have stuck around a long time.  Overall shutouts are way down compared to other years. Read the rest of this entry

Nats Need Stellar Years From Scherzer/Strasburg Similar To Johnson/Schilling Duo In 2001 – To Win The World Series

Max Scherzer was filthy in the 1st half of 2015 - with a 2.11 ERA heading up to the ALL - Star Break, and Stephen Strasburg ended the 2nd half of the year with a 1.90 in his Post ALL - Star games. If these 2 day aces can be in top form for the whole year, and then carry through to the playoffs, it would go a long with their chances to win a World Series. Since Jordan Zimmermann and Doug Fister left, the rotation is not as deep as it once was, yet these guys could make for an unforgettable 1 -2 punch in the postseason, and combined with Bryce Harper, potentially win the Fall Classic this year.

With Zack Greinke flying the coop in Los Angeles over the winter, all of a sudden, this dynamic pair of Nationals chuckers should be the best back to back starting tandem in the Majors right now.

It is a walk year for Stephen Strasburg.  He has shown flashes of brilliance, but has yet to put it together for the whole year.  You could say his career has kind of been like Schilling’s prior to his arrival in Arizona.

I think both guys could near 20 wins each. have mid 2 ERA’s – and both compete against the NL’s elite for the NL Cy Young Award.

If they have great seasons, it should equal a playoff berth – and if not the NL East Division.  Strasburg’s best two years were in 2012 and 2014, so maybe he is just a better even year pitcher himself.

Scherzer is 53 – 20 with a near 1.00 WHIP and ERA of 3 since the start of the 2013 season.  No doubt these 2 guys will pull up awesome numbers in playing the Marlins, Phillies and Braves for almost 40% of their total games.  Add in the Brewers, Reds, Padres, Rockies to the fold, and that becomes half of the year.

Should Washington make the playoffs, that is exactly why they doled out $210 over 7 years for Scherzer in the first place.  The former Tigers pitcher was pretty damn good in the 1st RD of the postseason for Detroit, going 3 – 1, with an ERA of 2.79 and WHIP of 1.034 in 29 Innings worth of work in the LDS rounds.  I think he could take the next step beyond that.

Last year Scherzer threw 2 no-hitters and nearly tossed 2 more.  He has shown he can last longer than ever before.  He was a workhorse with his 228.2 IP. It was a career high, just like his 276 Strikeouts in that timeframe and his incredible WHIP of 0.918 were.

It is time to for Strasburg to leave it all on the table.  Much like his 34 Game Starts in 2014, where he logged 215 Innings and a NL Leading 242 Strikeouts, the former #1 overall pick could really make a fortune in Free Agency with a banner year. The Jays won a critical AL Divisional game versus the Red Sox to salvage their weekend – but also knock out one of the favorites not to be shutout before all other clubs.  Marco Estrada frustrated and stymied the Beantowers at the Rogers Centre.

With plenty of clubs having not played 5 games yet, Boston could finish higher than 23rd still, if those other clubs get walloped more than 3 – donut.

In MLB Runs Scoring Survivor, the Cubs picked off their 7th variations, and could be the 1st club to complete once they hit games where they score 8, 5, 3, 1 and 0 runs.  Perhaps the zero may be the toughest total to reel in for them.

There is a huge logjam at tied for 2nd with 5/11 variations.  Washington has only played 4 games, so you will have to forgive them for their low 2 different variations.

The Padres have completed 6 games this year. were shout 3 times to start the season, then scored 16 and 13 runs right after, and then finally place a number between 1 and 9 runs yesterday with 3.

We will take the amount of games played as the factor in determining who wins, so even if a club finishes 1st – all others would have to have passed the mark for them to be deemed the winner.  Tiebreakers will go to the clubs who scored the must runs on their final variation.  If there is still a tie, the standings for Runs Per Game (in the MLB) will be the next tiebreaker. The Mets were blanked yesterday by the hapless Phillies for their 1st win of the year.  Both New York clubs are now out of this competition.  One has to think this clubs pitching staff will take many other teams out of this category.

It is a shame too because the legend of Bartolo Colon reaches new heights with his Willie Mays ‘style’ catch on a popout.

Speaking of winless, the Minnesota Twins extended their losing streak to 5 games to begin the year in their loss to the Royals 7 – 0 yesterday.

The only Division not to feature a club with 0 runs in a game for 2016 is now the NL Central.

For the MLB Runs Scoring Survivor, the whole NL West has now had their teams score 10+ runs in a contest.

Incredibly after 3 straight games of being bageled, the Padres have put forth 29 runs in the last 2 games.  It is a good thing they went to Coors Field to kickstart their campaign.  They were also able to end Trevor Story‘s HR streak at 4. (In which he hit 6 jacks).

The Cubs also extended their variations streak to 5 games without having the same run total, and are the favorite to win this competition considering they have a 6, 9, and 10 (or 10+) game already. Read the rest of this entry

Why not switch days they were not playing on Friday and Saturday. New York was blanked 4 - 0 by the Tigers and Zimmermann yesterday. The Yankees became the 4th club to be blanked this year yesterday afternoon in Detroit.  While some teams have not played their 4th games already. their placement could be higher than 27th. however this was to be expected.

I hate the fact they cashed it in as a fan.  Sitting Alex Rodriguez and Carlos Beltran all in the same game – just four games into the schedule is pretty dumb.

I have no problem with the guys excusing A-Rod with a pass versus the tough right hander in Jordan Zimmermann, but really the club could have started Mark Teixeira at First Base and had Beltran as the DH.  Are they really that frail that they can’t even make it through half a week?

At worst, why not rotate who takes the contest off.  They better all be in the lineup today against Mike Pelfrey.

It is completely understandable for Joe Girardi to give the veterans the day off, no worries there, but to field a lineup that possessed Dustin Ackley and Aaron Hicks is ridiculous.  They should have just thrown CC Sabathia in this match if they were putting out the “B” lineup.

In this opening week we had Sully Baseball talk a lot about the Pirates, D’Backs, Cubs and the Cardinals in opening week.  He keyed on where Tim Lincecum may end up, and the opening start for Zack Greinke.  Like everyone else, he also submitted his yearly predictions.

Sully also delivered an emotional podcast where he implores everyone to love their extended family more on April 2, 2016 – because you don’t know when you may lose some one.

Noah Syndergaard was filthy yesterday in the Mets 2 – 0 blanking of the KC Royals.  They are the third team to be eliminated – however plenty of clubs are playing the second game of their schedule, and could be beat up worse than 2 – donut today.

San Diego officially places 30th in the tourney. and LAA was 29th.

Speaking of SD.  For the second straight day “The Friars” were bageled by the Dodgers.  They are seeing more zeroes on the scoreboard than Bill Gates estimated net worth so far this campaign.

They are also the only club in the NL West not to plate ten runs thus far in the season.

In MLB Runs Scoring Survivor – the Tampa Bay Rays scored 3 runs for the 3rd straight contest in their controversial victory against the Toronto Blue Jays last night.  Repeating the same run total this early in the year is a big way to fall back in this competition.

Colorado and  the Chicago Cubs scored 6 runs in their second game. and are the only team with 2 contests to have 2 variations north of 5. Read the rest of this entry

It something small yes, however it took 49 games for the 2014 Los Angeles Angels to be shutout in that campaign. They won this competition. As of right now, they will finish 29th for this category, with being on the back end of a 9 - 0 drubbing in Interleague courtesy of the Chicago Cubs at Angel Stadium last night in Anaheim.

It almost always happens in Game 1 for at least a few clubs.  Last night the Cubs blanked the Angels 9 – 0 and San Diego was massively speedbagged 15- 0 behind the brilliant pitching effort of Clayton Kershaw.

With the Tigers, Marlins, Red Sox, Indians,. Astros and Yankees all yet to play – it would take a 16 – 0 score or higher today for San Diego not to be the loser of this contest.

On the other side of the Survivor Pools was a bunch of high scoring games in the NL West.

The Dodgers,  Giants and the Rockies all plated at least 10 runs or more, with the totals of 15, 12 and 10 respectively in their games.  Scoring 10 or more runs is the second hardest mark to acquire in the contest for the 11 variations of 0 – 10+.

The Cubs racking up a 9 spot on the Angels bodes well for them to complete the quest early.  Scoring 9 men in a game is the single hardest amount. Read the rest of this entry

Joey Votto had his best year since 2010 at the plate in 2015. It couldn't have come at a better time. The Canadian Slugger will make $199 MIL min over the next 8 years and will be counted on to help with a rebuild. Either that, or maybe he could create enough value to be traded and the club could gain some financial flexibility going forward. The Reds finished 64 - 98 in 2015 - and are in the same Division as the top three teams in the MLB.

Homer Bailey was the 1st Pitcher to have a $100 Million Dollar Contract in place and undergo Tommy John Surgery. 

Carl Crawford holding onto a 7 YRs/$142 MIL deal originally signed with the Red Sox was the 1st guy to go down with the TJ Surgery as a position player.

Yes insurance will pay some of the money, but it is not a given that he will comeback and be as effective as he was before he went down with the UCL surgery.

The club is on the hook for Joey Votto to the tune of $199 MIL from 2016 – 2023 – and will jump another $13 MIL if the team picks up a $20 MIL Club Option for 2024.

The Reds are thanking their lucky stars that Votto posted his best baseball season since 2010 in 2015 with a 1.000 OPS and 143 Walks. Read the rest of this entry

With almost $100 MIL tied up in contracts for Sabathia, A-Rod, Teixeira and a potential Tommy John Surgery candidate in Masahiro Tanaka, this New York squad is in some deep trouble for next season. Despite the recent playoff misses, and injury prone players brought in by Brian Cashman, the club saw fit to grant him a 3 year extension last month. It may take a small miracle for them to make a playoff spot next campaign..

Brian Cashman can finally see some relief from some exorbitant contracts plaguing him from the last several years.

2016 sees the last year on deals for Aroldis Chapman,  C.C. Sabathia, Mark Teixeira and Carlos BeltranAlex Rodriguez is still on the book for one more year after this.

Sabathia does have a Vesting Option for $25 MIL if salary guaranteed if he 1) does not end 2016 on the disabled list with a left shoulder injury, 2) does not spend more than 45 days in 2016 on the disabled list with a left shoulder injury or 3) does not make more than six relief appearances in 2016 because of a left shoulder injury.

The Yankees can’t guarantee this will happen. Therefore the club must treat this contract as part of their deal for 2017 as well.  The Buyout would be $5 MIL.

Sabathia’s drinking aside, they are paying for the good years right now, and he is no better than a 5th Starter – and at 36 years of age with 3000+ IP logged for his career, there may be not much left in the tank. Read the rest of this entry

I saw a ton of MLB games live last year.  224 to be exact.  I spent a lot of time listening to music at the park before and after the game.

I was also fed a steady dose of ‘Uptown Funk’ by Bruno Mars, ‘Shake It Off’ by Taylor Swift, and if I hear “Shut up and Dance with me” one more time by Walk the Moon, I am just going to snap.

Baltimore played the best music at the yard hands down.  They were huge into Silento’s Whip, Nae-Nae, but also one can’t not love the “Thank God I’m a country boy” (which I have seen played numerous times at Kauffman Stadium as well.”

During several games at Camden Yards they also played “(Apache – Jump On it”) by Sugarhill Gang, and this little number is played every where.

I started to think of the most common played tunes at the park.

The Baltimore Orioles needed a 5 game winning streak at the year's end just to crack .500 last season. Now they might lose the reigning AL HR king and Wei Yin Chen from last years squad. Dan Duquette needs to be diligent with his roster over this winter otherwise the club could start a free fall back down the AL East Standings circa 1998 - 2011.

It has been announced that Jason Heyward has just inked an 8 YR deal with the Chicago Cubs for $184 MIL deal.  The contract calls for a player opt out after 3 years, but for now he is tied with Joe Mauer for 13th overall in total dollars during a deal.

Whether Heyward is worth that kind of dough in AAV is beside the point.  At 26, he was one of the youngest Free Agent players of all time that could garner that type of cash.

No question about the man’s defensive prowess being unique in the game right now.  He has also cut down on the amount of Strikeouts from early in his career. Read the rest of this entry

When Adrian Beltre arrived in Texas for the 2011 season he had a fine career that was started at age 20 in Los Angeles.  What he has achieved in Arlington was turn a decent lifetime of playing baseball into a Hall of Fame Career.

The 36 year old Third Baseman could hold records for the hot corner for XBH, 2B’s, R, GP, PA, AB, Hits and RBI just to start with – and cement his legacy in Cooperstown.

They must take a realistic approach right now - and trade all of their marketable players - and rebuild for the 2 or 3 years down the road. The Rockies now play in a suddenly tough NL West - where the Dodgers, Giants and surging D'Backs all reside.

They are one of the weirdest franchises in the Major Leagues – and play in an equally weird atmosphere in Denver – that furthers the hard line it is to have a successful franchise.

6 winning seasons in 23 years of existence is very paltry. Despite the shortcomings on the field, the club still draws over 30,000 fans per game.  Maybe the reason is fans love offense.

In 2016 the club will look to end 5 straight years of losing seasons – and also erase a 7 year playoff drought.

Chicago Cubs State Of The Union For 2016

I absolutely love the singing of Zobrist for the Cubs. He is a quality veteran Utility guy for this young versatile club. Zobrist at 35 may have been pricey at the four year deal work, but they were able to trade away Starlin Castro as a result. Zobrist was vital to the Royals postseason run - and is Joe Maddon's favorite all time player. His ability to switch all over the field will give guys like Schwarber, Baez, Soler and Russell all the availability to thrive with matchup maneuvers. The Cubs should not stop here though. They need to acquire a CF - and trade for a #3 starter at some point in the next 8 months.

The Cubs finally threw their names in the ring on the Free Agent front this week by first signing ultra  Utility man Ben Zobrist to a 4 YR/$56 MIL -on the heels of  John Lackey to a 2 YR/$32 MIL deal.

The club also dealt Starlin Castro away for another team controllable pitcher in Adam Warren.  These are significant steps in the right direction to start their run at the 2016 NL Central Division Title,

2015 was a nice breakout season – and the furthest the team has gone in 12 years however this franchise needs to spend as much money and continue to pursue an end to their century plus World Series drought.

Greinke Signs With Arizona: 12th Best Deal ALL – Time Of 50 MLB Richest Contracts.

Zack Greinke opted of his deal after this season, even though he will stay have nearly $26 MIL per year left on his deal running through 2018. There is no doubt in my mind that LA will probably walk away from Greinke. I base that on the comments from GM Andrew Friedman - who isn't looking to spend a lot of money, and also shed payroll. If the brass is able to pull of some swift financing, they should be able to absorb a ne deal with the RHP, and not have the salary for the club be blown out of proportion.

Zack Greinke opted of his deal (6 YRs/$147.6 MIL) after this last season with the Dodgers, even though he will still nearly $26 MIL per year left on his deal running through 2018. The 32 Year Old has been dynamite since moving to Los Angeles, featuring a 60 – 17 (.779) record with a mid 2 ERA since he was dealt to the Angels in mid 2012 from the Brewers.  He just inked the most lucrative deal ever signed for the MLB in AAV at $34.42 MIL per year.

A collective haymaker punch has just been thrown at the rest of the National League West.  The Diamondbacks have inked Zack Greinke to a 6 YRs/$206.5 MIL pact as of last night.

This is the 3rd richest Pitcher contract ever signed behind David Price‘s 7 YRs/$217 MIL deal – and Clayton Kerhsaw’s extension of 7 YRs/$210 MIL.

It is also the highest Average Annual contract  ahead at $34.42 MIL per season, edging out both Price and Miguel Cabrera at a clip of $31 MIL each a campaign for their respective deals.

Greinke, 32, who finished 2nd in NL Cy Young Voting with an incredible 1.66 ERA in 222.1 IP worth of work in 2015 had opted out of his 6 YRs/$147.5 MIL deal with the Dodgers after just 3 years.

The Right Handed Pitcher left 3 years and $77.5 MIL on the table – and this was the right move as he was slated to earn just under $26 MIL a season for that contract.

This is the 12th richest deal of ALL – Time in the Major Leagues – and is also the 12th player to crack the $200 MIL+ barrier.

David Price just inked the richest deal in MLB history with the Boston Red Sox at 7 YRs/$217 MIL.  It is also the 8th richest contract ever doled out.

The question is whether or not it is a worthy investment to put that much dough on the table for a guy that will progressively decline as the deal goes on.

If you follow our Tommy John Surgery Tracker, you will find that 30 or so pitchers are having their names added to the list.  Last season, the first 9 figured player – and top 50 salaried player had their arm go under a TJ Surgery in Home Bailey.

The time is coming again when an even higher profile pitcher will have to go down with it while his name is on a pact for a huge 9 figure salary.

it is the main reason why some clubs just can’t afford the risk.  Boston has the funds to do this, and this clearly was the prudent move for the franchise to do after losing out on Jon Lester last season.

Especially with smaller market teams, having too much invested with your pitchers can be catastrophic.  Even though Jarrod Parker is out for the year with TJ surgery, and A.J. Griffin may not be out of the wood for it either, the club is not hampered long-term financially by their injuries.  It hurts yes, but not as much as it could have.  He was forced into realizing the effects from losing Mulder, Zito and Hudson because the team couldn't afford to re-sign them.  But as you will read, it was a blessing. Tommy John Surgery Thursdays: David “Boomer” Wells

David Wells was the 1st Yankee to throw a perfect game since Don Larsen had thrown one in the 1956 World Series. It was the 15th perfect game in World Series history. This underrated Lefty was a 3 time ALL - Star, 2 time World Series winners and is tied with Kenny Lofton for appearing with 6 teams in the playoffs. He also was the last player to have been carried off at Yankee Stadium.

David Wells is one of the most criminally underrated Left Handed Pitchers of ALL – Time.  I put him right up there with Jamie Moyer for never being recognized for just how good they were.  But it was almost not to be.

David Wells was about the 10th Pitcher to undergo the Tommy John Surgery ever.  This was back in 1985 – before he even made it to the big leagues.

At just age 22, he was also one of the youngest ever to have the procedure done. Only Dwayne Henry of the Mariners was younger at age 20 at the time. Read the rest of this entry

Baseball is really starting to get the picture in some regards.  Today it was announced that the league will open with three games on the first Sunday of the season.

The Pirates will host the Cardinals at 1:05 PM EST
