It has been announced that Jason Heyward has just inked an 8 YR deal with the Chicago Cubs for $184 MIL deal. The contract calls for a player opt out after 3 years, but for now he is tied with Joe Mauer for 13th overall in total dollars during a deal.
Whether Heyward is worth that kind of dough in AAV is beside the point. At 26, he was one of the youngest Free Agent players of all time that could garner that type of cash.
No question about the man’s defensive prowess being unique in the game right now. He has also cut down on the amount of Strikeouts from early in his career.
Who knows the way contracts are being flung out – $23 MIL a year might not be that top heavy in a few more years. I think it is a good play for the Cubs, as this may have been lunacy for about 26 of the teams considering the money.
Heyward is a Career 3 Slash of .268/.353/.431 so far in 6 seasons played. Sure he might accelerate more now with his prime years coming up. His numbers suggest he may be a 20 HR/20 SB guy for several campaigns upcoming.
Theo Epstein would take those totals in a heart beat. Now you have Ben Zobrist, Heyward, Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo, Kyle Schwarber at the to of your lineup who all draw walks with a high OBP, and have great Extra Base power.
The bottom of the Cubs lineup is solid as well with a mixture of Miguel Montero, Jorge Soler and Addison Russell. With Chris Coghlan and Javier Baez as bench players you have dramatically increased the depth.
Rumors persist around for a Soler or Baez to Cleveland deal for a Starting Pitcher. I would not part with Baez who could play Second Base.
This franchise is now set for years to come. They are the favorite to win the World Series and one of these years the actual front runner to win the Fall Classic will do so. I think 2016 may be the year.

I am happy to be back at the helm of the MLB Reports, after completing my record 224 Games in the MLB Trip in 2015. It was the 4th time I have seen all 30 MLB Parks since 2008.
During that time away I was fortunate to do 100 Media Interviews and be named the Baseball Blogger Alliance President.
