The success of most franchises usually occurs when a huge core is built up through a drafting system, and then the club can piece the rest of the club together.
The 2nd best way to create a winning squad is to trade for players with the organizational pieces you have supplanted in the Minors or Majors.
Then there is the Yankees way of doing things. Hiring Free Agents – and spend boatloads of dollars.
Out of the majority of their hitting roster in 2014, most of them came through the Free Agent route.
Mark Teixeira, Brian McCann, Carlos Beltran, Brian Roberts, Kelly Johnson and Yangervis Solarte were acquired through outright Free Agency.
Ichiro Suzuki and Brendan Ryan were both acquired in deals, then have since re-signed as Free Agents in the open market afterwards.
Alfonso Soriano, was brought over in a deal, and is in the last year of his current contract signed back in 2007.
Yes, he was originally signed by the “Pinstripers”, but the new chain of transaction, had the club giving away a pitching prospect for his services, even though he is still tied to A’Rod.
Derek Jeter, Brett Gardner and Francisco Cervelli stand alone as the only 3 players to have been drafted by the club – and have remained Yanks their whole playing time thus far. Read the rest of this entry
How All Of The San Diego Padres Hitters Were Acquired: (2014 Roster Tree)

As a 2nd RD draft pick (2005) of the franchise, Chase Headley has pretty much been disappointment over the .last 2 seasons after setting the world on fire for the 2nd half of 2012. Headley led the NL with 115 RBI in 2012 amongst 31 HRs, Headley also captured a Gold Glove Award and Silver Slugger in 2012. He ended up finishing 5th in NL MVP voting. He hit 23 HRs and 73 RBI in just 75 Games after the 2012 ALL-Star Game.. Chase Headley actually fared well at Petco Park in 2012 – with a 3 Slash Line of .272/.357/.812. He added 13 HRs and 51 RBI. In 600 AB during 2013, the man only had an OPS of .747 – with 13 HRs. 2014 has been worse, with a .620 OPS, .204 BA – with just 6 HRs in 211 AB. The franchise has been criticized for not capitalizing on his 2012 year via a trade. At least they never gave him a huge extension.

Omar Minaya, A.J. Hinch and Fred Uhlman Jr. took over the “office of the GM” on June 22nd, when the Padres fired Josh Byrnes from his post.
In order to see if the canning was valid, one has to search through the transactions the man did under is tenure at the helm.
Some of the current squad was brought in by Byrnes (hired in Oct of 2011, after Jed Hoyer left to take the GM position with the Chicago Cubs. although through the course of the Roster Tree, you will see some of the players go back to the Kevin Towers era.
Crazy enough is that Byrnes was fired by Towers current team (ARI) as the GM in July of 2010.
Towers is also responsible for some of the assembled roster in 2014 for San Diego. KT is one of several possible replacements candidates for the vacant SD GM job.
It is a franchise that has made several ‘suspect’ trades over the last 10 years, and the drafting record hasn’t netted them the kind of ‘blue chippers’ to sustain a lengthy period of success despite drafting high a lot of years.
San Diego’s club in 2014 is injury prone, hitters and pitchers alike, and are headed for a brutal campaign, already at 35 – 47 heading into games June.30, 2014.
They are already 8.5 games behind the playoff bar. and 11 out of the NL West.
What the Nats Should do in July
A great article by David Huzzard of the CitizensofNatstown.com
The trade deadline is a little over a month away and that means the coming month of July will be filled with speculation, rumors, and excitement but will ultimately end with disappointment. As a baseball fan the trade deadline is a yearly excuse to get excited about trades and rumors that have no realistic chance of coming true. As a first place team with a couple of questions the Nationals have a chance to make some moves and while every other team is chasing one of the Cubs five starters and David Price, the Nationals could go after a position player. Specifically a second or third baseman with Rendon playing whatever position they don’t and Span hitting the bench or being sent off in a separate trade to help replenish the farm system.
The biggest second base name rumored to be on the market is Chase Utley. The 35 year…

So for a little bit of nostalgia, I add an installment of a previous segment we once had, called ATR (Ask The Reports).
Q: I noticed you pulled down the HR leaderboard pages and placed them on a website called www.30mlbteamsreports.com, is this the same ownership of that site?

The A’s Should Trade Jim Johnson To Tampa Bay For Grant Balfour

Billy Beane made some great trades to bolster his Relief Core – and rotation for the 2014 year last winter. Unfortunately 1 move may haunt in more ways than 1 in Jim Johnson.
Billy Beane just hasn’t been on the bad end of many deals in his recent days. Trading for Jim Johnson may turn out to be his worst move ever.
Originally it looked like another genius move, trading away an MiLB player in Jemile Weeks – for a guy who has back to back 50 Save seasons on his resume, but it has been a colossal nightmare for the AL Bay Area franchise.
Johnson was given a 1 YR deal worth $10 MIL. This represents about 12% of the team total payroll of just over $80 MIL for the 2014 campaign.
The dollars doled out hurts the team more than anything else. Had this man just been inept, without carrying a heavy price tag, it would have been a 4th and 40 situation (think what you do in football in that scenario.
What is too bad is that Beane actually looks smart in not giving Grant Balfour his cash for the kind of deal he wanted either. Read the rest of this entry

This gives you a guaranteed amount of 75 games on those 5 nights, and Monday and Thursday are the off days for clubs. As double headers need to be made up for cancellations, some days will exceed 15 games, or be less than 15 in those 5 days stated. Read the rest of this entry

The Diamondbacks are having a brutal season at 30 – 44 thus far, and are now under the microscope of Tony La Russa.
This has to be done for good reason. The club’s transaction record recently is highly suspect even though they are being led by veteran GM Kevin Towers.
When covering this Roster Tree (just for the hitters) I have found a disturbing trend of 2 team and 3 way trades that may not be beneficial to the long term success for the snakes.
The 1st one coming to mind is shipping out Trevor Bauer, Bryan Shaw and Matt Albers for a fringe 1B prospect in Lars Anderson, Reliever Tony Sipp and shortstop Didi Gregorius (even though Chris Owings was already in the system). Read the rest of this entry

How All Of The Texas Rangers Hitters Were Acquired (2014 Roster Tree)

The Rangers had back to back World Series Appearances in 2010 and 2011 – and have 4 straight seasons of collecting 90+ Wins – with 370 victories overall. 2014 has been an injury plagued season, robbing the club perhaps of putting forth a 5th consecutive 90 win campaign. Despite this, the organization has done spade work to be mentioned as a top franchise over the last 5 years. This Roster Tree proves a little of this.

The Rangers set up their franchise for years to come in 2007, when they pulled off a trade of ALL – Star Mark Teixeira – to acquire several players in the franchise that they are still seeing solid returns.
My absolute favorite transaction tree is finding out the Michael Choice branch of trades.
It dates back to the team signing Todd Van Poppel as a Free Agent before the 1998 season.
Out of all of the players the team currently has, only Leonys Martin, Mitch Moreland and Rougned Odor and Jurickson Profar are composed of team draft picks – with the latter being hurt right now,
The rest of them were picked up via another route. Read the rest of this entry

Current Odds To Win The 2014 MLB World Series + Best Value Bets – Week 12

The Tigers were not always the favorite to win the World Series in 2014. At one point, they were listed at +1100 for the Fall Classic. It has been proven that placing money on the paper champion rarely comes to fruition. Regardless, this organization resonated with gamblers with 3 straight AL Central Titles, and appearing in 3 straight ALCS’s. I am not a proponent of the new odd listed, and would have to advise on staying clear of putting down cabbage on Detroit.

The art of placing a good futures bet in Baseball will always require due diligence on anyone’s part. In my next article today, I will reveal all of the bets I placed from Vegas so far this year.
The method to my madness is figuring out when to wager on a team based on their value.
In my set of picks to start the year, I selected TB, TEX and SF. Mind you the 1st 2 look horrid now, but I managed to secure the Giants at a +2500 World Series odd because the LA Dodgers were so heavily favored.
I also pounced on the Tigers having a bad 1st week, and were at +1100 (highest odd on the board this season), before they then jumped out to 27 – 12 for the year.
Detroit has since regressed to a 7 – 18 clip – corresponding with a late plane trip when they left Boston 4 Sundays ago, owners of the MLB best record.
Again gamblers have all the confidence in the “Motown Boys” because they are the 3 time reigning AL Central Champs, have an abundance of premiere talent, and the easiest path of resistance in their own AL Central Division.
I am elated I had the odd at twice the current value.
In the last several days I have hedged a bet with all AL Central teams in forms of a World Series and Division Winner wager. I am divulging all in the next article. Read the rest of this entry

What’s Up With Ian Desmond?
Awesome Nats Blog About Desmond by James O’Hara
Perhaps it’s Ian Desmond’s fan-friendly attitude, or perhaps it’s because many secretly suspected the shortstop couldn’t keep up the gains he made in 2012 and 2013. Whatever it is there has been a surprising lack of attention being paid to the struggles the Nats starting shortstop is having at the plate in 2014. After a 2012 where Desmond batted .292/.335/.511 with a 128 wRC+ and a 2013 where he batted .280/.331/.453 with a 116 wRC+, it’s disappointing to see Desmond sitting around a .225/.295/.413 line with a 97 wRC+ through 241 plate appearances this year. The $7 million question though is what will Desmond produce at the plate through the end of the season?
The answer is a mixed bag. When you look in the right places there are some encouraging signs that Desmond will be able to pick it up over the coming months. Desmond has walked in 7.9%…

In early 2012 I had this plan to venture out on a full season voyage of watching a game in all 30 MLB Parks.
What I ended up doing was breaking my own record for being present for every pitch in all games during a 30 MLB Parks odyssey in just 23 Calendar Days during April of 2012.
I had taken 7 full weeks (3 weeks after, and 1 week before) off of work to not only do this, but to rest up after a bad vehicular accident in 2010, in which a douchebag hit my car going 60 MPH while I was waiting to turn left into a shopping mall from – not moving at all.
From late 2010 until late 2011, I embarked on a brutal path to gain my senses recovering from a concussion.
It was the 8th one of these I had come across, but the 1st in nearly 15 years. Read the rest of this entry
Notable HRs On Friday May 30th: Donaldson, Mesoraco, Bautista, Willingham, Seager + Stanton
Josh Donaldson continued his assault on AL pitching with his 2nd Multi HR effort of the year.
By virtue of him collecting his 15th HR, he ties idle Jose Abreu for 3rd place in the AL HR race.
Jose Bautista not only hit a jack for the 2nd straight game, but he kept himself tied for 5th with Albert Pujols in the AL by doing so.
Josh Willingham is finally healthy for the Twins – and he has big flies in 2 straight contests.
Kyle Seager of the Mariners put forth his 2nd HR in as many games for Seattle. Read the rest of this entry
Yankees Hanging In the AL East + Wild Card Race

The New York Yankees have managed to stay afloat among injuries, old age and lackluster play at home so far. A lot of it can be attributed to Mashahiro Tanaka, the Bullpen as a whole, timely hits from bench players, a few streaks by Teixeira, and for unheralded players like Yangervis Solarte and Dellin Betances. The Bronx Bombers will have a tough time competing without the likes of Sabathia, Nova and Pineda for the next stretch, and will not see Nova for the whole year.
The Yankees spent $503 MIL on player salaries in the offseason, and half of the roster is comprised of different guys from last year.
It was a team that also splashed the biggest International signing plus posting fee with their 7 YRs/$175 MIL pact with acquiring Masahiro Tanaka.
Going into the second game of a 7 game homestand versus the Twins (3), a makeup game vs Mariners on Monday, then concluding with a 3 game set against Oakland., the Bronx Bombers are 28 – 25, and 2.5 Games Behind AL East leading Toronto.
While it is too early for the standings really, if the playoffs were to start today, the Yankees would be playing against the Angels in the Wild Card playoff spot.
Fresh from a 5 – 4 road trip through Chicago (both teams) and St. Louis, the team did well to salvage the trip after dropping the 1st two contests to begin with.
