SNY

It is Sunday and time for the Sunday Request.

The shift… it is a way to win baseball games. It speeds up the game. What’s not to love?

Several people have asked me, but this was asked by podcasting star and friend of the podcast, Jimmy Pardo.

I am playing the percentages this episode of The Sully Baseball Daily Podcast.

Mr. Perfect Rich Hill, Joey Votto, Masahiro Tanaka, Matt Weiters, Jerad Eickhoff, Jung Ho Kang, Chris Archer and Ryon Healy all added to their totals for Who Owns Baseball yesterday.

Eddie Gaedel: His Meteoric Rise and Tragically Mysterious End

He died too young, passing away at a young age with enormous untapped potential. When he was found in his mother’s house, unresponsive from a beating suffered during a mugging and a subsequent heart attack, he had just turned 36. Despite having had a career in show business, and even a brief stint as a major league baseball player, he never found the comfort or respect most would expect from such opportunities. Insecurity, alcohol and always feeling on the outside all contributed to his lot in life leading up to his final days. As it turned out, Eddie Gaedel wound up being as overlooked in death as he was in his much too brief life.

Rich Hill was lifted after 7 perfect innings, striking out 9 Marlins and throwing 89 pitches. The bullpen would lose the no hitter in the 8th but the Dodgers finished up the 5-0 victory.

Joey Votto continued his torrid second half with 4 hits, including a homer, and a pair of runs scored, as the Reds beat the stumbling Pirates, 8-7.

Masahiro Tanaka threw shut out ball into the 8th, finishing with 1 run in 7 1/3 innings, striking out 10 Rays and earning the 5-1 decision for the white hot Yankees.

Matt Weiters reached base 3 times, homering twice and driving in 5 runs as the Orioles won a critical Wild Card Showdown with Detroit, 11-3.

Hunter Pence reached base 5 times, including 2 doubles, and scored 4 runs and made a few key defensive plays to help the Giants take a 7-6 nail biter against Arizona.

Daily Fantasy MLB DFS Picks For DraftKings 9/10/16

P- Masahiro Tanaka (vs. Tampa Bay Rays): $10,800. Over his last six starts, Tanaka is 5-0 with a 2.08 ERA. That includes a start against the Rays which he gave up four runs over seven innings and struck out eight. While that start isn’t fantastic, Tanaka has pretty much dominated this team over his career. In 84 career at bats against Tanaka, the Rays’ offense is batting .179, with 19 strikeouts, and a .188 OBP.

P- Adam Wainwright (vs. Milwaukee Brewers): $8,100. It looks like Wainwright has finally snapped out of his funk. Over his last three starts, he has a 1-1 record, 3.71 ERA, and 15 strikeouts in 17 innings pitched. That includes a start against Milwaukee where he went seven innings, giving up only three hits, seven strikeouts, and one earned run. In 144 career at bats against Wainwright, the Brewers’ offense is batting .215, with 37 strikeouts, and a .245 OBP.

7 MLB Rookies Who Have Unexpectedly Become X-Factors For Their Teams in 2016

For a Major League Baseball team to experience success, it’s necessary to receive contributions from all 25 men on the active roster. However, because of injuries, lack of production or a combination of the two, it normally takes even more than that to reach the postseason and contend for a World Series title.

That’s why those under-the-radar signings in the winter are so important. You know what else is important? The contributions from rookies, who began their season in the minor leagues, but are ready and able to make a significant impact at the big-league level.

The following seven rookies are in the future plans for their respective organizations, but may have not been expected to do a whole lot in 2016 after starting the year in the minors. Upon getting promoted, they’ve done one of two things:

  1. Fortify the roster for an expected playoff run in October.
  2. Help those far-fetched dreams of reaching the postseason not seem so crazy.

Daily Fantasy MLB DFS Picks For DraftKings 9/9/16

P- Tanner Roark (vs. Philadelphia Phillies): $9,300. Roark has dominated the Phillies this year. In four starts against Philadelphia, Roark has a 0.64 ERA. In his last start against the Phils, he went seven scoreless innings. Over his last three starts, he has a 1-2 record, 3.18 ERA, and 12 strikeouts in 17 innings pitched.

P- Yordano Ventura (vs. Chicago White Sox): $8,600. Over Ventura’s last three starts, he has a 2-0 record with a 2.20 ERA. He has struggled with control at times, but if he can limit his walks, he has the potential to put up a huge game on Friday. Minor League Baseball Announces its August Players of the Month

PRESS RELEASE from Minor League Baseball

PETERSBURG, Fla. — Minor League Baseball today announced the August Player of the Month Award winners for each of its 16 leagues. Each player will receive an award from Minor League Baseball in recognition of the honor.

Lehigh Valley IronPigs (Phillies) right-hander Phil Klein led the International League in strikeouts (46), batting average against (.154) and WHIP (0.65) in August. He was 4-0 with a 1.06 ERA during the month as he allowed 18 hits and four walks over 34.0 innings pitched. Klein, 27, was originally selected by Texas in the 30th round of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft out of Youngstown State University.

Jharel Cotton had a memorable big league, pitching into the 7th, finishing with 2 hits, and 1 run over 6 1/3 innings, earning the 4-1 decision for Oakland over the Angels.

Matt Garza held the mighty Cubs to 3 hits and 1 run over 6 innings. He did not get the victory but the Brewers did, 2-1.

Adam Lind reached base 3 times, homering twice including a grand slam to lead the Mariners past Texas, 8-3.

Jonathan Villar provided all of Milwaukee’s offense with a pair of solo homers. But it was enough to beat the Cubs, 2-1.

Daily Fantasy MLB DFS Picks For DraftKings 9/8/16

P- Ivan Nova (vs. Cincinatti Reds): $9,800. Over his last three starts, Nova has a 2-0 record, 1.71 ERA, and 16 strikeouts in 21 innings pitched. He has been absolutely dominant since joining the Pirates at the trade deadline. In six starts in the Pirates rotation, he is 4-0 with a 2.89 ERA. The Reds offense is average at best, so hopefully Nova can take care of business at his home field on Thursday.

P- Trevor Bauer (vs. Houston Astros): $7,900. Considering there is only seven match-ups on Thursday, there were some very slim pickings for starting pitching. The Houston Astros offense can be dangerous, but Bauer has done a great job against them in his career. In 51 career at bats against Bauer, the Astros are batting .137, with a .226 OBP, and 21 strikeouts.

I’ve been a Red Sox fan my whole life. My Sox fandom can be matched with everyone.

WHY am I still a Red Sox fan?

And what would ever make me a fan of another team.

P- Noah Syndergaard (vs. Cincinnati Reds): $11,000. Syndergaard appears to be back folks. Over his last three starts, he owns a 1.23 ERA with 17 strikeouts in 22 innings pitched. In his last start against the Reds, Thor went 6.2 innings and struck out nine, while giving up three earned runs. If he pitches to his full potential, Syndergaard is easily capable of a 25+ point performance.

P- Marcus Stroman (vs. New York Yankees): $7,400. Stroman has struggled over his last few starts, but he has shown great career success against the Yankees. In his sole start against New York this season, he allowed only two runs over eight innings pitched. In 72 career at bats against Stroman, the Yankees are batting .139, with a .194 OBP, and a .281 slugging percentage. Over the last seven games, the Yankees are ranked 27th in OPS, 24th in OBP, and 27th in slugging percentage.

The Pittsburgh Pirates Should Not Hesitate to Lean on Adam Frazier

The Pittsburgh Pirates are a team that is searching for answers. They may have a ready-made answer in Adam Frazier

Pittsburgh Pirates UT Adam Frazier has been an unexpected surprise in 2016. In a season thought to mark the debut of noted pitching prospects, a do-it-all utility man who had all of 299 plate appearances at Triple-A has shown that he is big-league ready.

So why won’t manager Clint Hurdle pencil him into the lineup more often? To be sure, there is a comfort level that has been built up with players such as Josh Harrison and David Freese. With Gregory Polanco‘s ability to get hot at any given time coupled with Starling Marte‘s consistent play, the formula for consistent playing time for Frazier gets murky.

With the club barely clinging to Wild Card contention, the time may be now for Hurdle to consider scribbling Frazier’s name on his lineup card with regularity, regardless of preference or past performance.

Major-League Ready

Despite having just those 299 PAs at Indianapolis, Frazier has consistently shown to have a major-league capable approach at the plate. A quick glance at several plate discipline and batted ball peripherals shows this to be the case.

The biggest takeaway from these statistics presented here is that Frazier is seeing more pitches in the zone than most other hitters, and doing more with them. An 85.1 percent contact rate versus just a 7.7 percent swinging strike rate shows a very patient hitter who may be more advanced at the plate than initially thought.

frazier

When Frazier does put bat-to-ball, his hard hit percentage is above league average as well as is his line drive percentage. A quality approach breeds quality contact which breeds quality hits.

READ MORE AT PIRATES BREAKDOWN…

Brian Dozier has Literally Been the Only Bright Spot in 2016 for the Minnesota Twins

After surprising most of baseball by finishing second in the American League Central with a 83-79 record last year, there was reason for the Minnesota Twins to feel optimistic in 2016.

In a year in which a lot of things had to go right for second-year manager Paul Molitor, nothing did. Instead of building off 2015’s success, they own MLB’s worst record at 51-87 entering action on Tuesday.

It’s been especially difficult since August 18. Fresh off a two-game sweep of the equally bad Atlanta Braves, Minnesota has lost 16 of its last 18 games, which included a 13-game losing streak. Playing the Twins has almost guaranteed a victory for the opposing team.

Frankly, second baseman Brian Dozier has been the only reason why Twins fans have smiled consistently over the last couple months. He’s been on an incredible run since the All-Star break, and is on the brink of history because of a prolonged power surge.

Daily Fantasy MLB DFS Picks For DraftKings 9/6/16

P- Gio Gonzalez (vs. Washington Nationals): $9,300. Over his last three starts, Gio is 2-0 with a 3.06 ERA, and 17 strikeouts in 17.2 innings pitched. He has yet to win against the Braves this season, but he has a 2.31 ERA against them in his two starts. Atlanta’s offense has actually been pretty successful over their past seven games, but they rank 28th in OPS against left-handed pitchers in 2016. Based on their struggles against lefties and Gio’s career success against the Braves, I think he is a no brainer.

P- Jason Hammel (vs. Milwaukee Brewers): $7,500. Hammel has struggled a bit over the last few starts, but he got back on track after throwing six innings of one run ball against the Pirates his last time on the mound. In 107 career at bats against Hammel, the Brewers’ offense is batting .243, with a .327 OBP, and a .432 slugging percentage. These stats are average, but I think Hammel can take care of business on Tuesday. The main reason I’m starting him is because I think his price is very fair and brings about a lot of value. In three starts against the Brewers this season, Hammel has thrown 18 innings, giving up six runs, and he has struck out 18 batters.

MLB Most Undervalued Player: Jose Altuve

Jose Altuve, 26 years old, has a very good chance at winning the American League MVP Award in 2016. So how in the world could a potential MVP Award winner be undervalued? In 2013, the 5’4 Houston Astros’ second baseman signed a four year/$12 million contract. The contract also has a $6 million fifth year club option and a $6.5 million sixth year club option. Since signing the contract in 2013, Altuve has earned the honors of being an American League All-Star in 2014, 2015, and 2016.

I think it’s hard to say a player is undervalued if they are still under team control or arbitration eligible, but Altuve’s long-term contract is way under his specific value. He is one of the best all-around players in all of baseball. He is currently batting .346, with 22 home runs, 95 runs, 90 RBIs, 26 stolen bases, .409 OBP, and a .557 slugging percentage. Out of all players in baseball, I can’t think of any other players who put up similar all-around numbers outside of Mike Trout and Mookie Betts. Altuve also won a Gold Glove award last year, which shows his value is much more than just his bat.
