JULIE JACOBSON/AP

JULIE JACOBSON/AP

The Mets are up 2-0… who saw THAT coming? (If you raised your hand, you are a liar.)

Time to figure out who owns October!

Each winning team for every post season game gets a pitcher and a hitter who earn a full WOO (Who Owns October.)

And at my discretion, I award a 1/2 WOO’S to a worthy player on the losing team.

At the end of the post season, we will see who had the highest WOO total as a pitcher and a hitter.

A complete description of the rules can be found HERE.

From October 18th. NLCS Game 2:

Receiving 1 WOO’s

Curtis Granderson singled and walked, stealing 2 bases, scoring twice and stole a home run with a highlight reel catch to lead the Mets to a 4-1 victory over the Cubs.

Noah Syndergaard struck out 9 Cubs batters over 5 2/3 innings, allowing only 3 hits, 1 run and 1 walk, earning the 4-1 decision for the Mets.

Receiving 1/2 WOO’s

Dexter Fowler reached base 3 times and scored the Cubs only run in their 4-1 loss to the Mets.

Mike Moustakas tied the game with an RBI single and opened it up with another run scoring hit in the 8th to help the Royals come from behind against Toronto, 6-3.

Daniel Murphy homered to give the Mets an early 1-0 lead and made a diving play to end the 4-2 victory over the Cubs.

Starlin Castro hit a game tying double in the 5th but it would be as close as the Cubs would get as they fell to the Mets, 4-2.

Jon Lester pitched into the 7th and kept the Cubs in the game. But the Mets would get to him and Lester would be saddled with the 4-2 loss.

Troy Tulowitzki went 2 for 4 including an RBI double in the Blue Jays 6-3 loss to the Royals.

Driving past the old Johnny Carson studios, I started thinking about how the consumption of baseball has changed since 1985, 1986 and 1993, the last times the Royals, Mets and Blue Jays won the World Series.

Also I talked about the not exactly eventful Game 1 of the ALCS.

Heeeeeere’s Sully on The Sully Baseball Daily Podcast!

That is your Division Series round. Not a bad opening act!

From October 15th. NL Division Series, Game 5:

Receiving 1 WOO’s

Jacob deGrom did not have his best stuff but he gutted his way through 6 innings, striking out 7 and allowing only 2 runs to earn the Mets series clinching 3-2 win over the Dodgers.

Daniel Murphy  pulled off the gutsy steal of third that set up the tying run and then homered off of Greinke for the go ahead run as the Mets stunned Los Angeles 3-2 and won the Division Series.

Receiving 1/2 WOO’s

Zack Greinke pitched into the 7th and finished with 9 strikeouts and 1 walk over 6 2/3 innings, allowing just 3 runs to score. He would be saddled with a tough luck 3-2 loss as the Mets eliminated the Dodgers.

Justin Turner capped a brilliant Division Series with 3 more hits, including 2 doubles, and a stolen base to finish with a .526 average. He would be stranded each time he reached base and the Dodgers lost 3-2 to the Mets.

A throw back from the catcher gone wrong, Canadians gone nuts, Rangers infield gone bad and a bat flip heard from Canada started the day. Johnny Cueto adding tens of millions of dollars to his off season value ended the day. The ALCS is set and the state of Texas has a lot of reasons to be sad.

Marcus Stroman pitched 6 strong innings, allowing 2 hits, 1 walk and 4 strike outs. He did not get a decision but set up Toronto’s 6-3 clincher over Texas.

Receiving 1/2 WOO’s

Cole Hamels pitched into the 7th, allowing 2 earned runs over 6 1/3 innings, striking out 8. The Rangers errors were his undoing as he got a hard luck 6-3 loss in Toronto.

Rougned Odor  collected 2 hits and alertly scored on a deflected throw from the catcher and briefly gave the Rangers the lead. The Blue Jays would come back and win, 6-3.

Luis Valbuena homered and gave the Astros an early 2-0 lead.  The Royals would come all the way back and win the game 7-2 and clinch the Division Series.

For the first time since 2009, a team other than the Giants or Cardinals will represent the National League in the World Series. And the Cubs have people in Chicago dreaming of their first World Series appearance since 1945. Meanwhile Clayton Kershaw forgot it was the post season.

Kyle Schwarber got 2 hits including a towering homer to help the Cubs clinched the Division Series, 6-4 over St. Louis.

Justin Turner smacked a 2 run double that was the difference in the Dodgers 3-1 series tying victory over the Mets.

Receiving 1/2 WOO’s

Bartolo Colon pitched a pair of shutout innings in relief to keep the Dodgers from padding the lead. The Mets bats went silent and they lost 3-1.

Daniel Murphy hit a home run that accounted for all of the Mets scoring in their 3-1 loss to the Dodgers.

Stephen Piscotty reached base twice including a 2 run homer. But in the end it was not enough as the Cardinals fell to the Cubs 6-4.

At the end of the post season, we will see who had the highest WOO total as a pitcher and a hitter.

A complete description of the rules can be found HERE.

From October 12th. AL & NL Division Series:

Receiving 1 WOO’s

Jake Arrieta did not have his best stuff. But his 9 strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings was enough to earn the 8-6 Cubs victory over St. Louis.

Travis d’Arnaud broke open a close game with a 2 run homer, finishing the game with three hits, three runs scored and three RBI as the Mets demolished the Dodgers 13-7.

Wade Davis threw a 6 out save, squelching any hope for a Houston comeback and sealing the 9-6 victory for the Royals.

R. A. Dickey allowed 5 hits, 1 run and no walks over 4 2/3 innings. He was taken out before he was eligible for the win, but was pitching just fine in Toronto’s 8-4 win against the Rangers.

Matt Harvey may not have looked like an ace, but he pitched well enough to win. He struck out 7 in 5 innings, allowing 3 runs, 2 earned and got the 13-7 decision for the Mets over the Dodgers.

Eric Hosmer went 2 for 5 with a homer and 3 RBI and helped the Royals dizzying comeback against Houston, 9-6.

Kevin Pillar collected 3 hits including a homer, driving in 3 to help the Blue Jays stay alive in the series, 8-4 against Texas.

Jorge Soler  reached base 4 times, including a homer, driving in 2 and leading the Cubs in an unexpected slug fest win, 8-6 over St. Louis.

Receiving 1/2 WOO’s

Shin-Soo Choo got 3 hits and scored twice in Texas’ 8-4 loss to the Blue Jays.
Carlos Correa went 4 for 4 with a double and a pair of homers, driving in 4, but also made an error in the Royals 9-6 come from behind victory in Houston.
Adrian Gonzalez reached base 3 times, including a homer, in the Dodgers 13-7 loss to the Mets.
Jason Heyward doubled and homered, driving in 2 of St. Louis runs but they came up just short against the Cubs, 8-6.
Lance McCullers pitched into the 7th allowing 2 hits and 2 runs over 6 1/3 innings, striking out 7 along the way. The Astros bullpen would collapse, however, and Kansas City would take the game, 9-6.

The last 4 game day of the year should be a great one! Plus the Utley suspension comes through and a devoted fan got married.

It is a full day of playoffs on this episode of The Sully Baseball Daily Podcast.

Who Owns October In MLB Playoffs 2015? (#WOO) Tallies Updated For October 11, 2015

The Blue Jays win will ensure one more day where 4 games are played. Meanwhile I don’t think Houston has loved Dallas this much EVER!

From October 10th. NL Division Series Game 2:

Receiving 1 WOO’s

Chris Carter collected 3 hits including a double and a homer to lead Houston’s attack as they beat the Royals 4-2.

Marco Estrada went into the 7th and finished with 6 1/3 innings, allowing 5 hits 1 runs and no walks and earned a season saving victory for the Blue Jays over Texas, 5-1.

Dallas Keuchel  pitched 7 strong innings, striking out 7 and allowing 5 hits, including a solo homer for his only earned run, and was credit with the Astros 4-2 win over the Royals.

Troy Tulowitzki reached base 3 times, broke open the game with a 3 run homer and drove in 4 of the Blue Jays 5 runs as they won in Texas 5-1.

Receiving 1/2 WOO’s

Lorenzo Cain homered and walked but his Royals fell to the Astros, 4-2.

Rougned Odor drove in the Rangers only run and helped turn 3 double plays in the field in the Blue Jays 5-1 victory.

I missed the craziness and the controversy that happened at Dodger Stadium with Chase Utley.

Why?

Because I was at my 25th high school reunion.

Afterwards, in the parking lot of my old high school, I tried to piece together what happened at Dodger Stadium through the haze of the social media outrage.

And yes, I wore a Red Sox hat in my senior picture.

I could poke the flames and rattle some cages and say Chase Utley owned October, but even I won’t do THAT!

Time to figure out who owns October!

A complete description of the rules can be found HERE.

From October 10th. NL Division Series Game 2:

Receiving 1 WOO’s

Zack Greinke pitched 7 strong innings, allowing 5 hits, 2 runs on a pair of solo homers, striking out 8 and walking no Mets batters. He was the beneficiary of some strange calls that helped him earn the 5-2 victory for the Dodgers.

Jorge Soler reached base 4 times with a double, a homer and a pair of RBI to lead the Cubs past the Cardinals, 6-3.

Justin Turner doubled twice, driving in one and scoring another in the bizarre 5-2 come from behind Dodger win over the Mets.

Travis Wood threw 2 1/3 shutout innings, allowing 1 hit and no walks while striking out 2 and earning the decision in relief as the Cubs topped St. Louis, 6-3.

Receiving 1/2 WOO’s

Yoenis Cespedes homered in the second inning to put the Mets on the board. They would be defeated in the 7th as the Dodgers rallied and won 5-2.
Noah Syndergaard struck out 9 in 6 1/3 innings but came unglued in the surreal 7th inning mess and was charged with the 5-2 Mets loss by the Dodgers.
Kolten Wong homered in the Cardinal’s 6-3 loss to the Cubs.

THIS is more like it! 4 games. All were hotly contested. Some controversy was had in one game. A bone headed managerial decision was in another.

From October 8th. AL and NL Division Series:

Receiving 1 WOO’s

Wade Davis slammed the door in the 9th with a key pick off thrown in for good measure as he earned the 5-4 save for Kansas City over Houston.

Jacob deGrom simply dominated the Dodgers with 7 shutout innings, allowing 5 hits and 1 walk while striking out an eye popping 13 batters and pitching the Mets to a dramatic 3-1 Game 1 victory.

Delino DeShields went 3 for 7, doubled, scored in the first and drove in a run in the 14th to help the Rangers win a wild and controversial 14 inning 6-4 game in Toronto.

Cole Hamels pitched a solid game, allowing 2 earned runs and 2 unearned runs over 7 innings, walking none. He got a no decision but the Rangers went on to beat the Blue Jays, 6-4 to 14 innings.

John Lackey dominated the Cubs by pitching into the 8th, finishing with 7 1/3 shutout innings, 2 hits, 1 walk and 5 strikeouts, earning the 4-0 decision for St. Louis.

Salvador Perez homered, singled and walked, driving in 2 runs and helping the Royals come from behind to beat the Astros, 5-4.

Stephen Piscotty doubled and homered, driving in 2 and helped turn a one run game into a 4-0 Cardinals shutout of the Cubs.

David Wright walked and smacked a 2 out, 2 run single in the 7th to give the Mets all the insurance runs they needed as they stole Game 1 in Los Angeles, 3-1.

Receiving 1/2 WOO’s

Howie Kendrick doubled, singled and scored the Dodgers only run in their 3-1 loss to the Mets.

Clayton Kershaw struck out 11 and gave up just a solo homer going into the 7th. He walked the bases full in the 7th and was pulled after only 6 2/3 innings. The bullpen allowed a pair of his runners to score and got the decision in the Dodgers 3-1 loss to the Mets.

Jon Lester allowed just 1 run to the Cardinals over the first 7 innings. But he gave up a pair of insurance runs in the 8th, finishing with a solid 7 1/3 innings, 9 strikeouts, 1 walk and 3 run performance but took the 4-0 Cubs loss.

Colby Rasmus reached base 3 times, including a homer and a double, driving in a pair. But the Astros would blow their lead and fall to KC, 5-4.

Ben Revere collected a pair of hits, drove in a run and stole a base in the Blue Jays 6-4 extra inning loss to the Rangers.
Kyle Schwarber got on base 3 times, getting 2 of the 3 Cubs hits. He was never driven in as the Cardinals took Game 1, 4-0.
Marcus Stroman pitched into the 8th, finishing with 7+ innings, 5 hits and 2 walks. Unfortunately for him, the bullpen blew his lead and Toronto fell to Texas, 6-4.

4 games in. So far none of them have been exactly classics. The road team has won each game by taking early leads and not looking back. At least today had scoring on both sides!

From October 8th. AL Division Series Game 1:

Receiving 1 WOO’s

Jose Altuve went 3 for 5 with a run scored and an RBI to spark the Astros offense past the defending AL Champion Royals, 5-2.

Delino DeShields drove in the first run of the game and came around to score another, collecting a single and a double and leading the Rangers to a stunning 5-3 series opening win in Toronto.

Jake Diekman pitched a perfect 7th and 8th innings, keeping the strong Blue Jays attack from mounting a rally and set up the Rangers taking the series opener, 5-3.

Collin McHugh pitched 6 strong innings, including sitting through an extended rain delay, allowing 2 runs, 4 hits and 1 walk to earn a victory in Game 1 of the Division Series for the Astros, 5-2 in Kansas City.

Receiving 1/2 WOO’s

Edwin Encarnacion went 2 for 4 with an RBI but the mighty Blue Jays came up short against Texas, 5-3.

Kendrys Morales provided all of the Royals offense with a pair of solo homers in the 5-2 loss to the Astros.

Chris Young came out of the pen after the rain delay to throw 4 innings, striking out 7 and allowing just 1 run on a solo homer. The damage had been done, however, and Houston beat the Royals, 5-2

The Pirates won 98 games. Their reward? Jake Arrieta and a one and done Wild Card loss.

If they wanted to avoid that, they could have won 3 more games over the course of the season.

Essentially they lost this game in early April.

Shelby Miller finally recorded another win, throwing 8 shutout innings, allowing 3 hits and 7 strikeouts, as Atlanta was victorious over St. Louis, 6-0.

Max Scherzer threw his second no hitter of the season, walking none and striking out 17 Mets along the way for the 2-0 Washington final.

Corey Kluber struck out 9 over 8 shutout innings, allowing 3 hits and 2 walks and earning the 2-0 decision for the Indians over Boston.

Christian Yelich had a terrific double header. In all he went reached base nine times, going 5-5 in one game and 3 for 4 with a walk in the other, combining for 3 runs scored and 2 RBI as the Marlins beat the Phillies twice, 7-6 and 5-2.

Colby Rasmus homered twice and added a single to lead the Astros closer to a playoff spot, 6-2 over the Diamondbacks.

They all owned baseball on October 3, 2015

Earning 1/2 WOBs on losing efforts.

Noah Syndergaard allowed 2 hits and 1 run and 1 walk while striking out 10 Washington batters. But the Mets were no hit, 2-0.

Marco Estrada pitched into the 7th, finishing with 6 2/3 innings, striking out 9 while giving up 3 hits and walking none. He would get a no decision as the Blue Jays lost to Tampa Bay 4-3.

Paul Goldschmidt reached base 3 times and homered in the Diamondbacks 6-2 loss to the Astros.

Josh Hamilton‘s two homers off the Angels (on their dime) was almost the greatest middle finger in recent years. Unfortunately for him, the Angels made a dramatic rally in the 9th inning to put the Division Clinching on hold and beat the Rangers 11-10.

The Most Recent No Hitter For Each Franchise (Updated for Max Scherzer, October 3, 2015 )

AL BELLO/GETTY IMAGES

AL BELLO/GETTY IMAGES

TWO NO HITTERS IN ONE YEAR!!

Well you can not blame Max Scherzer for the Nationals’ woes! He came to DC and found himself getting two no hitters in the same year!

The last time someone did two in one year it was Roy Halladay doing one in the regular season and another in the the Division Series.

Scherzer had the second game of a lifetime and Washington has its third no hitter since the last day of the 2014 season after not having one since 1931.

Not a bad way to say goodbye to the season for Scherzer.

It is time to update my list!
