We are ramping up our coverage on DFS play at MLB Reports, and will include some strategy articles in the forthcoming days and weeks.  We come from a high level of handicapping backgrounds, and have been given the go ahead from the braintrust at MLB Reports to start sharing some of these with you.

Of course Chuck Booth (MLB Reports Majority Owner) and I spearheaded this movement back a few years ago with just regular baseball futures.  We were not sure if we wanted to go ahead with the MLB DFS Fantasy at all, but were finally convinced for demand by a couple of our BBBA writers (Josh Robbins and Trey Rose).  The need is there and we are looking to deliver.

I have played DFS long enough to be the guy who writes the posts here.  The gambling philosophy championed by Booth in the 90’s is brilliant for any sources of tournaments or gambling period! 

It weaves the Martingale Betting System (progressive betting with the double up theory) and it fosters it with several other techniques so you don’t bet against yourself.

One of the biggest blunders made by many gamblers is betting against themselves.  We are going to simplify the process, so if you win, you can really win – none of this barely break even nonsense.

MLB Fantasy Daily (DFS) Picks For DraftKings – 5/16/16

I am loving the Jays rallying around the Jose Bautista incident on Sunday to absolutely crush Drew Smyly in Tampa Monday Night.  I will use a 4 hitter stack of RHB including Edwin Encarnacion. Jose Bautista, Troy Tulowitzki and Josh Donaldson (who is 7 – 14 – with 3 HRS career vs the Rays Southpaw).

By the way here, the Jays are awesome (GVP’s – Great Value Plays) with EE, Joey Bats and TULO at $3700 each, while the reigning AL MVP is listed low at $4300.  I suppose a lot of the pricing has to do with possible suspensions, however I fully expect these guys to appeal, which would grant them a stay of execution for tonight.

There is a misconception that Smyly is an elite pitcher.  He often yields one homer per start.  In his 29 career Innings worth of work versus Toronto, he has given up 6 HRs.  I am calling for 2 HRs versus Smyly int his contest from these four gentlemen.

I also will use J.A. Happ to slow down the Rays lineup.

Jon Niese is to be used in the 2nd pitcher slot – because quite frankly, the Braves are 9 – 27, on the year, so Poppa Smurf has a chance to victimize the lineup.

By using the Pirates starter tonight, it affords me to use Giancarlo Stanton, Mookie Betts and Dustin Pedroia.  I like the Boston 1 and 2 hitters because they have been swiping bags in addition to helping the Red Sox lineup.

MLB Daily Fantasy Picks (DFS) For FanDuel – 5/15/16

Sunday is always a crapshoot with everything involved, so make sure you check your starting lineups, weather and backup Catcher roles.

The game I am keying on more than others today is the game at Camden Yards.   With contests in Coors Field, Chase Field and Miller Park also featuring on massive hitter friendly venues, I will be playing a roster on all of them.

The Tigers are still criminally underpriced on FanDuel right now, as their losing streak has a ton more to do with their horrific Late Inning Relief of late.

I am waiting for Justin Upton to start cracking the ball, and will play him on a roster for 2 – 3 weeks once he starts rolling.  He is a type of guy who will bash 10 HRs in a month at least once in a baseball year.

In the same game, I am running with Jonathan Schoop, who clubbed 2 jacks Saturday – and could easily go yard again on Sunday.

Adam Jones is also on fire – after early season struggles, and is a nice bargain at $2800. Manny Machado took a goose egg for FPP – and I simply can’t think he will do this two games in a row.

Tentatively, I also have put Nolan Reimold into the lineup, should he not be played, I am going to use Yasiel Puig on a wildcard throw out there at $2400.

I would have loved to have implored the Jays lineup – however they were all way out of whack for the price – so I am only going to use Troy Tulowitzki.

The Tigers are facing Kevin Gausman, yet have several hitters that just lace fastballs.

As for my pitcher – I am going with Masahiro Tanaka.  The White Sox have guys that whiff in their lineup something fierce, and I like Tanaka over Miguel Gonzalez in this matchup.

Red Sox + Padres Have Completed 2016 MLB Runs Scoring Survivor, 23 Teams Left

Waited 32 games to score 10 or more runs, then did the feat 2 times in 3 nights thanks to the heroics of Jackie Bradley JR. and a crazy good lineup.

We are starting to get down to the nitty gritty of this contest.  7 of the 23 clubs have now completed their 11 different run variations, now that the Red Sox and Padres have accomplished the feat over the last few days.

Boston finishes 6th, and unless the Indians knockout run scores of 8 and 9 runs in any order over the next 2 contests.

San Diego looked to end as one of the last to finish this category early in the year being shutout 3 straight games to start the campaign, and also 5 of their 1st 11 matches.  They have been better as an offense of late.

The Padres swept a twinbill versus the mighty Cubs on Wednesday, and are just 2.5 Games Behind the Giants and Dodgers for the NL West lead at 15 – 20.  Good rally for these guys to finish in the top 10.

The Red Sox waited until game 32 to score more than 10 runs, and then they did the maneuver 2 nights later versus the A’s yet again, with another 2 HR, 6 RBI game from Jackie Bradley JR.

Most of the teams now have 9 or 10 variations covered, with the trailing squad in the whole MLB being the Philadelphia Phillies with just different 7 totals.

The Phightins’ are at least one of 4 rosters still alive in the MLB Shutout Survivor (A’s. Rockies and Pirates). Read the rest of this entry

MLB Daily Fantasy Picks (DFS) For FanDuel – 5/12/16

Clayton Kershaw won me a lot of money last start, and I will use him every time he is Starting.

I like using an affordable stack alongside the LHP, so I am using the struggling Tigers at hitter friendly Camden Yards tomorrow night.

Again, love FanDuel with using Victor Martinez as a Catcher. he can go in a 4 player stack with J.D. Martinez, Miguel Cabrera and Justin Upton.

In order to afford this lineup, I am using the KC Royals in another mini stack, imploring the use of Alcides Escobar, Alex Gordon and Omar Infante.  All 3 men are decent contact free swingers, who can do damage against Nate Eovaldi.

Since Aaron Hill crushed it last Saturday night with Kershaw’s start in the same day – I put him in the lineup again.  Not bad value for $2100 the way he has performed recently.

P – Kevin Gausman (vs. Minnesota Twins): $8,200. Gausman has proven he is a great play in daily fantasy over his first few starts in 2016. He is currently averaging 18.8 points per game on DraftKings this season.

He will be facing the 26th ranked offense on Tuesday, whom ranks as the 4th worst in the MLB when it comes to striking out. To top it all off, there is an 11 MPH wind blowing towards home plate, so the baseball should stay in the ballpark on Tuesday.

P – Derek Holland (vs. Chicago White Sox): $6,200. Holland hasn’t been spectacular in 2016, but Tuesday could be the day to turn it around. He is facing the Chicago White Sox, whom are ranked as the 18th overall offense in the MLB. When it comes to facing left-handed pitching, the White Sox are hitting a mediocre .237.

There will also be some very favorable weather for Mr. Holland on Tuesday. In Texas, it is expected to see winds upwards of 20 MPH towards home plate, which means there is a very slim chance of any power production.

MLB Daily Fantasy Picks (DFS) For FanDuel – 5/9/16

In order to accommodate our Coors Field lineup, we are going to forego any expensive pitcher on Monday, and go with flamethrowing Aaron Sanchez of the Jays against Jake Peavy in San Francisco

Peavy has bee the ultimate gong show the last several outings, and despite being back in the comfort of AT & T – it will still be tough to tame the high powered Blue Jays

While I am going with the clubs second tier offensive players you could certainly skip picking the Coors Field game – and implement Jose Bautista, Edwin Encarnacion against Peavy.

I am using the top of the Rockies lineup to bludgeon Rubby De La RosaCarlos Gonzalez at $3900 vs a RHP at home might be the value play of the night.

It would be nice if Russell Martin could kickstart his offense this year  I keep playing him as a cheap option on fantasy – but he has failed to deliver  Like teammate Troy Tulowitzki though, at least he doesn’t cost much money.  The latter I refuse to play now until he goes over the Mendoza Line for BA.

Love Aaron Sanchez in a big ballpark with Kevin Pillar running the ball down in the OF.  The Giants have a decent lineup of LHB, but Joe Panik has been hurt, and Brandon Crawford not to his 2015 standards yet.  Brandon Belt does scare me, but he is a different hitter at home.

Sanchez can strike out players at least – which will be crucial for this play.

I will be checking to see if they do switch EE in at 1B for Smoak, in which case I would switch to underperforming Prince Fielder vs Miguel Gonzalez (for $2700).

If you listened to us yesterday, then you fared extremely well as we did.  We said to play Clayton Kershaw – and stack the Milwaukee Brewers vs Brandon Finnegan with Ryan Braun, Jonathan Lucroy, Chris Carter and oh yes…Aaron Hill.

These guys amassed 5 HRs between them with (Hill clubbing 3 HRs and adding 7 RBI – including a Grand Slam in extra innings), so yeah we won some serious coin on FanDuel.

I am feeling like going against the norm today for the sample lineup.

While I will use Jake Arrieta on Draft Kings, and with other roster, I am betting that he may have a bad day.  The Cubs tend to let down on Sundays, as they have recently losing a few weeks ago to the Rockies.

Chicago also may let down because they have won 3 straight versus the Nats .

Tanner Roark has pitched better of late, and in a crazy bizarro maneuver – I am going to place a few hitters (Bryce Harper, Anthony Rendon and Danny Espinosa) against Arrieta, and also implore Roark against the Cubs.

The difference between the Pitchers was $3800.  That is too much budget to help the offense.

I am also using a stack with the visiting Detroit Tigers at Texas and LHP Martin Perez.  The ‘Motown Boys’ still are bargain value for all of their RHB

In my mix are: Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez, Justin Upton and J.D. Martinez.

To round out my roster, I have hot hitting Rougned Odor, who is hitting lead off for the Rangers. Read the rest of this entry

MLB Daily Fantasy Picks (DFS) For FanDuel – 5/7/16

You have to play Clayton Kershaw more now than ever on FanDuel.  It is actually easier to use him on the weekend, where there are day games available – with many bench player options.

While I may suggest players here, you should always check the starting lineups as they filter in tomorrow morning.

In DraftKings you can select more of a cheap 2nd pitcher alternative to compensate for the budget.

Since we did select Kershaw, we are also going to use the Brewers at home, in a right handed heavy stack versus the Reds Brandon Finnegan.

Ryan Braun, Jonathan Lucroy, Chris Carter and Aaron Hill will need to do the bulk of my damage on the lineup.  These guys must produce otherwise there is no chance at hitting on some money.

I searched for a few more bargains, and came up with a couple of veterans off to slow starts, but are capable of multi hi contests in Howie Kendrick and Alex Gordon.  Both priced to buy at $2300 each.

M’s Are 5th Team To Complete 2016 MLB Runs Scoring Survivor: Have Won 5 Series In A Row

We are getting to the guts of these teams finally completing all of their scenarios, although it could be months before all 30 clubs get it done.

Last night, the Mariners doubled up the Astros 6 – 3, and are the 5th team to complete the 11th variation.  The best they can hope for is finishing 5th.  Some teams could still pass them with holding games in hand, and being on the verge of completion themselves.

Seattle has been red hot as a squad the last 15 days.  They have won 5 straight series, and have now taken the 1st game of a 4 game set vs Houston this weekend.

The Mariners stand at 1st in the AL West – with a 17 – 11 record, and are 12 – 4 on the road already.

Obviously this teams offensive depth is a lot stronger this year, with Dae Ho Lee, Chris Iannetta and Nori Aoki replacing futile numbers from the C, CF and 1B positions last season.

Robinson Cano has also operated at an MVP caliber clip with and MLB leading 30 RBI in 28 GP – among his 9 HRs and .918 OPS.

The Bullpen is a lot more solid than a lot of folks anticipated – and Taijuan Walker, Hisashi Iwakuma, Nate Karns and Wade Miley have provided Felix Hernandez backup – where the 1st had poor 1st halves to last season, and the last two gentlemen were not even on this Starting Staff in 2015.

With the ‘Stros struggling so mightily out of the gate, and the Rangers still awaiting on Yu Darvish, the M’s could really take the AL West by storm in 2016.

A lot of people predicted this kind of team in 2015, so I am not shocked to see it actually come to fruition early.  I still feel they need to upgrade at the CF position, and possibly at SS midway through the year, but the franchise should have no problem pooling its resources to make that happen.

On the other side of the game last night was Jose Altuve leading off the home half inning with yet another  HR.  It was the 6th time already he has done that, and his 9th jack overall.

For those scoring at home, Altuve is leading the MLB in OPS at 1.104 – and XBH at 23 (has a MLB leading 14 Doubles).  It is a shame that Houston has wasted his early start to a tune of a 10 – 19 record.

We are preparing an article on him later in the day.

This should turn out to be quite fun.  A lot of gambling establishments have this sort of deal, and we will keep a running total of this on a daily basis (just for fun though), in addition to MLB Shutout Survivor, Who Owned Baseball (Daily MVP of the pitcher/hitter in both the American and National League) and also our Interleague results.

What Runs Survivor is: A MLB team scoring 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 or (10+) in different games throughout the course of the season.

Once a club has one of these run totals once, you cross it off and keep going until they complete the 11 different variations.

P – Noah Syndergaard (vs. San Diego Padres): $12,900. This is a no brainer, even at this steep price. Syndergaard is one of the best pitchers in baseball and he is facing the worst offense in baseball.

To top it all off, he is facing this offense in a pitcher’s park. In his first 5 starts, he has thrown 32.1 innings, with a 2.51 ERA, 44 strikeouts, and only 6 walks. Keep an eye on this game though because there is a good chance of rain.

Syndergaard is averaging 26.1 points per game on Draft Kings this season.

P – Danny Salazar (vs. Kansas City Royals): $8,800. Salazar’s price has dropped, but his value continues to rise. He will be facing the Royals offense on Friday, but they haven’t been great this season.

They currently rank as the 16th best offense in the Major Leagues. Also, the weather is in Salazar’s favor. There is a 10 MPH wind towards home plate, which means baseballs should stay in the park.

In 175 at bats against Salazar, the Royals’ lineup is only batting .234, with 42 strikeouts. Salazar is currently averaging 21.6 points per game on Draft Kings this season.

2016 MLB Runs Scoring Survivor: Nats 4th Team To Complete With Drubbing Of KC

Washington knocked off the Royals 13 – 2 to take the series 2 games t0 1 (should have been a sweep – Jonathan Papelbon), and used HRs from Bryce Harper and Daniel Murphy to plate 13 men.

It was the 1st time the Nats had scored 10 runs all year, and in doing so, it eliminated their last scenario out of the 11 in MLB Runs Scoring Survivor.

Seeding is yet to be determined as they have played games more than several other clubs who could still get there before 27 games, but it is done regardless.

Washington joined the winners (Cubs), O’s (AL winners, and only team to finish in Junior Circuit thus far), and the SF Giants as teams that are complete.

Only Atlanta has not scored at least 10 runs during a game in the Senior Circuit.

Surprisingly there are 7 squads in the AL who have score 10 in a contest so far in this campaign.  (Boston and Toronto are the clear outliers here.)

Other clubs yet to have that many are the Tigers, Royals, Twins, A’s and Angels. 

The Cardinals (for example) have done the feat 6 times already, and that is why they are trailing in the variations with 7.

The National League is taking the fight to the American League with this – even with the pitcher slot in the lineup.

P – Kevin Gausman (vs. New York Yankees): $6,900. Gausman was impressive in his first 2 starts in 2016. He will be facing a mediocre, New York Yankees, offense on Thursday.

Due to lack of games on the slate, Gausman’s price is what made him so attractive.

His strikeout potential makes him a decent play on Thursday. This is a bit of a risky pick, but he has showed a lot of promise over his first few starts. He is averaging 16.1 points per game on Draft Kings this season.

P – Jacob deGrom (vs. San Diego Padres): $11,400. deGrom will be facing the worst offensive team in Major League Baseball on Thursday, the San Diego Padres.

He will also be pitching in San Diego’s park, which is known as a pitcher’s park. For those two reasons, he is a must play on Thursday. He is averaging 21.5 points per game on Draft Kings this season.

P – Steven Matz (vs. Atlanta Braves): $9,200. He is facing the 25th overall offense in baseball on Wednesday. His strikeout rate against a mediocre offense should be a great play. The wind will also be blowing towards home plate around 10 MPH, so this should limit and potential long balls against Matz.

P – Felix Hernandez (vs. Oakland A’s): $10,700. he is facing the 24th overall offense in baseball on Wednesday. In 275 career at bats against King Felix, the A’s are hitting .229 with a .264 OBP and only 5 home runs.

Based on his B v. P, I think King Felix is a great play on Monday.

Last night was burned by Dallas Keuchel not pulling his weight on the mound.  I am laying off Collin McHugh tonight, as I feel there is to be lots of runs scored against the Twins – with Alex Meyer on the bump, and McHugh toting an over 6 ERA.

I also am feeling the Nationals breaking out the lumber versus Chris Young, and in particular Bryce Harper, who has had a slower 7 day stretch after a torrid pace the 1st 3 weeks.

I am still going to use the Buster Posey, Hunter Pence tandem versus Jon Moscot.

In order to field a huge amount of firepower, that comes with a Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa, George Springer stack versus Meyer, I used bargain bids of the night in Matt Carpenter ($3900) and Brandon Moss ($2700) against 2nd year man Aaron Nola. Read the rest of this entry

P – Michael Wacha (vs. Philadelphia Phillies): $9,000. Wacha will be facing the 22nd ranked offense of the Philadelphia Phillies at home on Tuesday.

In Wacha’s first 5 starts, he is 2-1, with a 3.07 ERA, 24 strikeouts, and 9 walks in 29.1 innings. He should thrive in this game since he is pitching against a mediocre offense and he is at home.

P – Matt Harvey (vs. Atlanta Braves): $10,300. Harvey will be facing the 21st ranked offense of the Atlanta Braves at home on Tuesday.

In Harvey’s first 5 starts, he is 2-3, with a 4.76 ERA, 21 strikeouts, and 9 walks in 28.1 innings. His ERA is very inflated considering his FIP is a 3.56.

This matchup is perfect for Harvey to get back to his old self.
