Prospects of the Day : Jeimer Candelario’s Aggressive Approach Pays Off

Another day of stud loaded stand out performances continues as Jeimer Candelario logs his third five-RBI game of this short season. Brent Honeywell also continued to show why he is one of the best pitching prospects in baseball with another scoreless outing logging eight strikeouts in seven innings pitched. Lastly, Juan Soto and Albert Abreu continue to enamor scouts and fans with their enormous raw potential lower in the minors and adding fuel to the hype that follows both of them.

Player of the Day

Jeimer Candelario

4-4 2 R 3B BB 5 RBI
The Cubs’ farm is loaded with good hitting prospects and Jeimer Candelario is one of their best hitting prospects. Candelario is only still in the minors because there isn’t a position for him on the Major-league team where he can see regular at-bats and tap into his potential. The left-handed third baseman picked up his third five-RBI game of the young season. The key to his success has come from his coaches stressing him on being more aggressive at the plate especially with runners in scoring position. Swinging early in his at-bats has helped him collected 15 RBI so far and hitting to the tune of .370. His Double-A hitting coach last year Desi Wilson, mentioned that he can see the difference from last year to this year, before he was starting his at bats 0-1 or 0-2 which made it harder for him get a pitch to hit. Last night he hit a triple showcasing his nice line drive swing into the gap of the outfield.

Since joining the Cubs organization in 2010, Candelario’s development has been a roller coaster having superb seasons and then struggling for extended periods. The inconsistency has lead to having to repeat both High A and Double A. Now that he is showcasing a maturity that has produced consistency the Cubs should be trying to find a position for him.

Daily Matchups for 4/13/2017

Top Pitchers

Yu Darvish- Absolutely love his match-up today against Ricky Nolasco and the Angels. Darvish is still looking for his first W of the season and why not tonight? His past two outings he’s combined for 12.1 innings, 8 hits, 5 ERs, 1 HR, 8 Walks, 9 Ks and an 0-1 record. He’s had mild sucess against the Angels in the past and could find himself in the W column after tonight’s game.

Career vs Current Angels Roster

AVG: 0.231 [28 for 121], BABIP: 0.247, K%: 26.2, BB%: 11.3
FIP: 6.14 Strikeout: 36 Single: 17 Groundout: 17Walk: 16 Flyout: 14 Pop Out: 11 Home Run: 9Lineout: 5 Grounded Into DP: 3 Forceout: 2 Hit By Pitch: 2 Field Error: 2 Triple: 1 Sac Fly: 1Double Play: 1 Fielders Choice: 1 Strikeout – DP: 1 Double: 1 Sac Bunt: 1

Madison Bumgarner- Like Darvish, MadBum is still looking for his first win of the season as he’s coming off of a 2-1 loss where he pitched 8 innings, gave up 6 hits, 2 ERs, 2 walks and 5 Ks. In that match-up against the Padres he induced 14 ground balls and 12 fly balls. The Giant’s offense just couldn’t get anything going for him so he looks to regroup and dominate a Rockies’ lineup that didn’t do much offensively in Coors over the past 6 days.

Career vs Current Rockies Roster

AVG: 0.249 [51 for 205], BABIP: 0.289, K%: 22.4, BB%: 9.5
FIP: 4.49 Strikeout: 52 Single: 33 Groundout: 33Flyout: 23 Walk: 21 Pop Out: 13 Lineout: 12Double: 9 Grounded Into DP: 8 Home Run: 8Forceout: 8 Field Error: 5 Sac Fly: 2 Sac Bunt: 2Hit By Pitch: 1 Triple: 1 Intent Walk: 1

Jordan Zimmermann- J-Zimm pitched masterfully against the Red Sox on April 8th with 6 IP, allowing only 4 hits and 1 ER, 1 walk and 3 Ks. He got the W and looks to continue that today against Phil Hughes and the Twins. The Twins can score on anyone this season so far (see Fulmer yesterday) but we like his odds if you’re playing the Early-Only slate.

Career vs Current Twins Roster

AVG: 0.231 [12 for 52], BABIP: 0.333, K%: 34.0, BB%: 1.9

Classic Milwaukee Brewers Opponents – The 1980 Toronto Blue Jays

The Milwaukee Brewers played in the American League East division from 1972-93. In 2017, the Brewers will play many of their old foes from the East in Interleague matchups.  Baltimore, Boston, Toronto, and the New York Yankees are all on the schedule this season.  To celebrate the glory days of the old AL East, I’ve created a “classic opponents” series of blog posts.  I’ll be covering great games, opposing teams, and even individual players from the East, particularly from Milwaukee’s golden baseball era of 1978-82.  I’ll be keeping this series fair and balanced – so Milwaukee isn’t always crushing Toronto or striking Reggie Jackson out four times in a game.

Since the Brewers are in Toronto for an Interleague series this week, let’s kick things off with the 1980 Toronto Blue Jays.

Daily Fantasy MLB DFS Picks For Fanduel & DraftKings 4/12/17

Daily Matchups for 4/12/2017

Top Pitchers

Max Scherzer-   Scherzer is always a stud when he’s on the bump but we like it even better tonight against a struggling St. Louis Cardinals team who have lost 2 in a row, sit on the bottom of the NL Central and look lost at the plate. Scherzer is coming off his dominating performance on April 7th that saw him pitch 6.2 innings, allowed only 4 hits (2 ERs) walking only 2 and striking out 7. He ending up with 98 pitches so it appears he isn’t on any sort of pitch count and absolutely love his numbers against a Cardinals team that used to be really good.

Career vs Current Cardinals Roster

AVG: 0.219 [28 for 128], BABIP: 0.289, K%: 28.1, BB%: 3.0
FIP: 2.05 Strikeout: 38 Flyout: 22Groundout: 20 Single: 18 Pop Out: 9Lineout: 7 Double: 7 Walk: 4 Forceout: 2Home Run: 2 Bunt Groundout: 1 Triple: 1Sac Bunt: 1 Grounded Into DP: 1 Sac Fly:Hit By Pitch: 1

John Lackey- No matter how many times you say his name, it’s still not sexy. Anytime you can take the Cub’s pitcher with the offense behind them, it’s generally a great idea. Lackey is coming off a great game on April 6th against the foe Cardinals where he pitched 6 innings, gave up only 6 his including 4 runs (3 ERs) walking only 2 and striking out 7 on his way to his first win of his season. He’s also dominated the Dodgers to the tune of under a .200 bA in 74 ABs which we will show you below.

Career vs Current Dodgers Roster

AVG: 0.189 [14 for 74], BABIP: 0.237, K%: 18.8, BB%: 10.6
FIP: 2.95 Flyout: 17 Strikeout: 16Groundout: 16 Single: 12 Walk: 9 Pop Out:5 Lineout: 3 Field Error: 2 Triple: 2 Sac Bunt: 1 Hit By Pitch: 1 Forceout: 1

Michael Fulmer-  Stop me if you’ve heard us suggest him before.  Fulmer is coming off of his first start of the season against the feared Red Sox offense where he pitched 6 innings of 4 hit ball, walking 2 and only striking out 4 but coming up with the win. Of course we’d love to see more strike outs out of Fulmer, but a W is a win. Fulmer is going up against a Twins team that somehow is in first place right now but he’s opposing the Twins’ Kyle Gibson.

Career vs Current Twins Roster

AVG: 0.353 [6 for 17], BABIP: 0.385, K%: 16.7, BB%: 5.6
FIP: 6.33 Groundout: 5 Single: 4 Strikeout:3 Pop Out: 2 Walk: 1 Double: 1 Home Run:1 Flyout: 1

Marcus Stroman- Stroman has only seen the Brewers for 18 total at bats so around 1 start and the results have been mixed, but he’s coming off a terrific start against a TB team where he pitching into the 7th inning (6.1) allowing 6 hits and only 1 ER with 5 Ks and getting 11 ground balls to only 6 FBs.

Career vs Current Brewers Roster

AVG: 0.333 [6 for 18], BABIP: 0.385, K%: 18.2, BB%: 13.6
FIP: 6.70 Groundout: 4 Strikeout: 4 Flyout:3 Walk: 3 Double: 3 Single: 2 Home Run: 1Hit By Pitch: 1 Lineout: 1

 Value/Sleeper Pitchers:

Ivan Nova- We suggested Nova last week when he went up against the Atlanta Braves and that worked out very well for us. In that game he pitched 6 innings allowing only 6 hits, 1 run, striking out 4 and getting the W. He’s got another great match-up pitching at home against the Cincinnati Reds who he has fared well against in the past. Would not be the least bit surprised if Nova goes for 7 innings with 6+ strikeouts tonight.

Career vs Current Reds Roster

AVG: 0.250 [17 for 68], BABIP: 0.276, K%: 14.3, BB%: 1.4
FIP: 2.96 Groundout: 19 Flyout: 11Single: 10 Strikeout: 10 Double: 6Lineout: 6 Grounded Into DP: 3 Home Run: 1 Sac Fly: 1 Pop Out: 1 Field Error: 1 Walk: 1

The Top 250 MLB Prospects For 2017

PLAYERS LIKELY RISING THE TOP PROSPECT RANKING

RANK 218 – FRANKLIN PEREZ

Franklin Perez is a tough cookie to quantify. He is 19 years-old with a decent fastball and a curveball that shows hints of elite status and throws at plus on a bad day.

On the surface, I am in love with Franklin Perez and think he has the chance to be something magnificent long-term.

Question marks arise on pitches outside his curve and are primarily geared at the change up. He also needs to clean up his delivery and become more repeatable. He is very early on in the development for a transitional pitcher from third base.

Though this ranking is likely more passive than aggressive, the future for Perez could net him a top 50 grade by season’s end if he showcases improvement in the mentioned areas. At the moment he looks like a potential SP4 with the upside of an SP2.

With his current offerings and age in mind, he didn’t calculate out higher than other names who are younger or hold better offerings. But, that doesn’t mean he can’t beat them out quickly. Read the rest of this entry

PROSPECTS OF THE DAY: MIKE SOROKA POSTING A 12.6 K/9

Soroka was Atlanta’s first-round pick in 2015 out of high school in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and has gone on to climb organizational charts since. After a steady 2016 in a full season of Class-A ball, the Braves brass felt confident promoting Soroka directly onto the Double-A Mississippi Braves roster where he made his 2017 debut on Monday.

Soroka flourished. He mixed in his regular combination of a sinking fastball, slider, and changeup and avoided walking a single batter in five innings of work. He struck out seven batters over those innings – five of his first nine outs recorded – and validated John Hart & Co.’s decision to accelerate his development after that aggressive promotion to Double-A ball earlier than anyone anticipated.

Soroka’s combination of skills allows for optimism regarding his floor. He already exhibits the characteristics of a solid, mid-rotation starter and his early work as a 19-year old in Double-A grants some further hope that he might even be able to take another leap forward toward a front-end slot.

Yesterday’s Top Prospects

Yoenis Cespedes’ Slow Start Hasn’t Been All That Bad

As evidenced by their young starting rotation, the New York Mets are a team — and organization, for that matter — built around starting pitching. However, while having a dominant starting staff is awesome, we’ve seen that offense is just as important toward their eventual success.

After all, you still have to score more runs than the other team to win.

For the Mets, it doesn’t really matter how deep the offense appears on paper because it all flows through Yoenis Cespedes. Considering the fact that he’s slashed .154/.267/.308 in 30 plate appearances thus far — good for a 63 wRC+ — it shouldn’t be totally shocking to see New York scuffling a bit out of the gate because their offense hasn’t gotten into a groove yet.

And yes, there’s no possible way we can draw any conclusions from a seven-game sample size, but there are a couple of encouraging trends from Cespedes now that we’re one week into the regular season.

Wil Myers hit the second cycle in the history of the San Diego Padres, going 4 for 4, driving in 2 and scoring 2 in the 5-3 win in Colorado.

Matt Moore threw 8 innings, allowing 3 hits, no walks and 1 run and earned the 4-1 decision for the Giants over Arizona.

Michael Pineda was brilliant into the 8th, striking out 11 Rays batters, allowing 2 hits and 1 walk and won the 8-1 final for the Yankees.

Chase Headley reached base 3 times, including a homer, scoring twice to help the Yankees past Tampa Bay, 8-1.

The First Cycle of the Year!

Going into 2015, the Padres had never had a no hitter nor a cycle hit. Now they are still waiting for that elusive no hitter, but they can chalk up multiple cycles now.

Wil Myers lined one into left center field and legged it out for a triple, completing the cycle and leading the Padres to a 5-3 victory against the Rockies.

Back in 2015, Matt Kemp legged out HIS cycle with a triple in Coors.

Innnnnnteresting. The Padres are STILL waiting for their first cycle that wasn’t hit in Colorado!

Go figure.

Cole Hamels- I absolutely love Hamels as a pick for cash or GPP tonight. He’s been dominant lately and he draws a terrific match-up against an Angels team that he has dominated in the past. He could easily go for 7+ innings and 40+ FP.

Career vs Current Angels Roster

AVG: 0.212 [48 for 226], BABIP: 0.259, K%: 20.9, BB%: 7.6
FIP: 3.06 Groundout: 58Strikeout: 52 Single: 32 Flyout: 26Walk: 18 Pop Out: 12 Double: 12Lineout: 10 Forceout: 9 Grounded Into DP: 8 Home Run: 3 Bunt Groundout: 2 Sac Bunt: 2 Hit By Pitch: 1 Triple: 1 Intent Walk: 1Fielders Choice Out: 1 Sac Fly: 1

J.A. Happ- It’s true that the Blue Jays have disappointed this season by going 1-5 to start the season but if they can give just a little bit of run support to Happ, he should be able to mow down the Brewers to get them back into the Win column. He’s had success with a 23.7 K% and we’ll show you the numbers here. He might be more of a SP2 or even a GPP play for you, but he should fair well against the Brew Crew.

Career vs Current Blue Jays Roster

AVG: 0.271 [16 for 59], BABIP: 0.265, K%: 11.8, BB%: 11.8
FIP: 6.53 Groundout: 14 Single: 9Strikeout: 8 Walk: 8 Lineout: 6Grounded Into DP: 5 Flyout: 4Double: 4 Forceout: 3 Home Run:3 Pop Out: 2 Sac Bunt: 1 Field Error: 1

 Value/Sleeper Pitchers:

Antonio Senzatela- So obviously there’s no data to go along with the Padres considering Senzatela is making his second start of the season but in his first career start Senzatela held the Brewers to 2 hits in 5 innings, allowing 3 walks and striking out 6. He’s now pitching at home but Jered Weaver is takes the bump opposite of him and should get absolutely dominated to give the Rockies and Senzatela the lead and in line for his first win of his career.

Today in Baseball History – The Indians/Angels Snow Series in Milwaukee

Ten years ago today, the 3-game series between the Cleveland Indians and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, scheduled to be played at Jacobs Field April 10-12, moved to Miller Park.  The Indians had already started the season on the road against the Chicago White Sox, winning 2 of 3 games.  When they came home to Cleveland, Mother Nature had plans that would interrupt their festivities and the next several games.

Bruce Rondon Down, Joe Jimenez Gets The Call

Jimenez, JoeWell, if you watched yesterday’s dumpster fire of a game, you might have seen this coming…Bruce Rondon has been optioned to Triple-A Toledo after giving up 4 runs in the eight inning without getting an out.

This all started for Rondon in spring training after showing a noticeable drop in velocity and incurring a 7.36 ERA in 6 games pitched, where he gave up 6 earned, on 3 homers, with 6 walks, 10K’s, and a .259 average against and a 1.77 WHIP.   Concerns were eased…

The Forgotten Rivalry: The Reds and Dodgers Battle for Supremacy of the ’70s

red-dodgers-lede_orig

Sometimes over the course of the schedule you manage to find that occasional game which encapsulates a club perfectly. One which showcases the superior firepower it’s truly armed with. The type of firepower that comes along once in a generation, if that. For Cincinnati, Saturday, May 19, 1973 was one of those games. As the Reds cruised to a 10-4 pasting of San Diego, Pete Rose banged out two doubles and a triple and scored three runs. Johnny Bench blasted his 10th home run of the year and drove in five runs. Joe Morgan actually got no hits at all – the box score shows him officially going 0-for-0.

That’s because in four trips to the plate, Morgan walked three times and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. He was in the middle of nearly every Cincinnati rally, helping to pad Bench’s RBI total. After walking in the first inning, he induced Padre pitcher Mike Corkins into an errant pick-off throw and wound up on third base, from where he’d score on a Bench groundout. Then in the fourth inning, the Padres decided to walk Morgan intentionally with runners on second and third, which set up Bench’s two-run single. In the sixth, he walked in front of Bench’s homer, though he didn’t score that time because Anderson decided to give him the rest of the afternoon off and pinch-run Chaney, who finished out the game at second base. Starling Marte went 4 for 5 including a 2 run bottom of the 10th, come from behind, walk off home run to push the Pirates past the Braves, 6-5.

Joey Gallo singled and hit a 3 run homer, driving in 5 altogether, leading the Rangers to an 8-1 thrashing of Oakland.

Jake Arrieta struck out 10 Brewers in 7 innings, allowing only 3 hits and 2 walks and earned the 7-4 victory for the Cubs.

Ervin Santana pitched 6 innings of 2 hit shutout ball as the Twins continued their hot start with a 4-1 win over the White Sox.

MLB Power Rankings: Apr 9, 2017: Week 2

There are several teams that you may ask why their rankings are still somewhat high despite poor records, in relation to the Blue Jays, Yankees, Mariners, Giants, or even the Royals for that matter. It is simple….They have not hosted a game at home yet, still have decent players, and all of them did still drop down the power rankings over the last week – and definitely from their year end win totals.

Daily Matchups for 4/10/2017

Top Pitchers

Chris Sale- Just looking at the picture here and seeing the strain on his elbow makes my insides hurt. I have no clue how this 6’10” 150 lb guy hasn’t had to have elbow surgery yet. Besides that, he’s the most expensive player on the slate and had a pretty damn good start to his BoSox career last game by pitching 7 innings giving up only 3 hits, 1 walk, 7 Ks and a QSTART. The only problem is he didn’t get the W but he still managed 46 FP. He’s got a great match-up against the Tigers and we’ll show you the numbers below.

Career vs Current Tigers Roster

AVG: 0.280 [70 for 250], BABIP: 0.331, K%: 23.4, BB%: 8.9
FIP: 4.85 Strikeout: 66 Single:48 Flyout: 38 Groundout: 37Walk: 21 Pop Out: 14 Home Run: 12 Double: 10 Lineout: 9Grounded Into DP: 8Forceout: 7 Intent Walk: 4 Hit By Pitch: 4 Sac Fly: 2 Bunt Pop Out: 1 Sac Bunt: 1

Jon Lester- We absolutely love his match-up against the Dodgers which he has absolutely dominated in his career. Lester gets to come into Wrigley to start the home opener after winning the World
Series and coming off of a great performance last Sunday against the Cardinals where he pitching only 5 innings, allowing 7 hits while only walking 2 with 7 Ks, an ER and 33 FP. Had he gotten the win that would have been an additional 12 FPs which would have dominated. You can even get Lester for $1300 less than Sale which most people will be on but let’s take a look at his numbers!

Career vs Current Dodgers Roster

AVG: 0.186 [26 for 140], BABIP: 0.242, K%: 26.5, BB%: 6.6
FIP: 2.57 Strikeout: 40Groundout: 34 Single: 20Flyout: 13 Lineout: 12 Walk:10 Pop Out: 7 Double: 3 Bunt Groundout: 3 Grounded Into DP: 2 Forceout: 2 Home Run:2 Sac Bunt: 1 Triple: 1 Double Play: 1

Jacob deGrom- He gets his second juicy match-up in as many times this season in the form of the Philadelphia Phillies tonight. He’s coming off a terrific performance against the Atlanta Braves where he pitched 6 innings of 2 hit ball, 6 Ks, a QSTART and 40 FP over at Fanduel. I wouldn’t be surprised if he does even better against the Phillies who he has had more success against.

Career vs Current Phillies Roster

AVG: 0.192 [14 for 73], BABIP: 0.232, K%: 21.1, BB%: 3.9
FIP: 2.68 Groundout: 17Strikeout: 16 Single: 12Flyout: 10 Lineout: 7 Walk: 3Grounded Into DP: 2Forceout: 2 Field Error: 2 Pop Out: 1 Home Run: 1 Double: 1Bunt Pop Out: 1 Bunt Groundout: 1

Value/Sleeper Pitchers:

Charlie Morton- This name isn’t a sexy name when you think of MLB Pitchers that you want to bet your hard earned money on but he has a terrific match-up against a Mariner’s team that has been very lackluster to start the season. Morton actually faced this exact team 5 days ago where he pitched 6 innings giving up only 5 hits, 2 walks, 4 KS, 2 ERs and QSTART and 29 FD FP. We love him again tonight as a sneaky GPP option.

Career vs Current Mariners Roster

AVG: 0.195 [8 for 41], BABIP: 0.200, K%: 11.1, BB%: 4.4
FIP: 4.02 Groundout: 19Single: 7 Strikeout: 5 Flyout: 3Forceout: 2 Hit By Pitch: 2Pop Out: 2 Walk: 2 Grounded Into DP: 1 Home Run: 1Lineout: 1

Catching Up With Former Detroit Tigers Pitcher Steve Searcy

In the mid-1980s the Detroit Tigers were one of the most feared teams in baseball. Winning the World Series in 1984, they had an iconic manager in Sparky Anderson, and a roster full of talent, including the likes of Alan Trammell and Lou Whitaker. Hoping to keep their momentum going, they also focused on stocking their farm system with young talent to sustain their future. Unfortunately, the team slipped as they moved towards the end of the decade and into the 1990s; unable to develop the prospects to build a dynasty. One of those home grown players was left-handed pitcher Steve Searcy, who never became a star but did make it to the majors in Motown.

Daily Fantasy MLB DFS Picks For Fanduel & DraftKings 4/8/17

Saturday brings it the end of the work week, and more baseball than our hearts desire! We have yet another terrific full slate of games which we will break down which pitchers to take and avoid and which pitchers make great pivots to tournament plays. Let’s check it out below!

Daily Matchups for 4/8/2017

Top Pitchers

Masahiro Tanaka- This will be an odd pick because of Tanaka’s struggles in his first start. He’s still a stud and should be able to bounce back in his 2nd start. If Severino was set up for the win before the Yankees’ bullpen blew it, Tanaka should be just fine himself. Let’s look at his stats.

Career vs Current Orioles Roster

AVG: 0.198 [18 for 91], BABIP: 0.182, K%: 20.8, BB%: 4.2
FIP: 5.27 Groundout: 25Strikeout: 20 Lineout: 10Single: 10 Pop Out: 7 Flyout:7 Home Run: 6 Walk: 4Forceout: 2 Grounded Into DP: 2 Double: 2 Sac Fly: 1

Chris Archer- Archer had one hell of an Opening Day last Sunday against the potent Yankees offense and he gets to start once again in Tampa Bay. The dome is a great pitchers park and Archer had the best home ERA last year but was still 2-10 because the Ray’s offense was terrible. They seem to be better this season so far and think he’ll be fine once again. People will be scared to take him against the Blue Jays, but he should be good to go. Let’s check his stats against them.

Career vs Current Blue Jays Roster

AVG: 0.201 [45 for 224], BABIP: 0.232, K%: 25.1, BB%: 8.8
FIP: 4.16 Strikeout: 63Groundout: 50 Single: 28Flyout: 27 Walk: 22 Lineout:16 Pop Out: 15 Home Run: 9Double: 8 Grounded Into DP:5 Hit By Pitch: 2 Sac Fly: 2Forceout: 2 Field Error: 1 Sac Bunt: 1

Kyle Hendricks- I believe a lot of players will see that Kershaw is on the mound and try to roster him but that game is being played in Coors, and regardless of yesterday’s small runs output there, I can’t trust Kershaw. My bold prediction of the season will be that Hendricks is the best pitcher on the Cubs staff. Better than both Arrieta and Lester. Mark my words here today folks!

Career vs Current Brewers Roster

AVG: 0.143 [10 for 70], BABIP: 0.244, K%: 39.7, BB%: 2.7
FIP: 0.60 Strikeout: 29 Groundout: 15 Single: 6Lineout: 5 Flyout: 4 Double: 4 Forceout: 3 Walk:2 Pop Out: 2 Grounded Into DP: 1 Hit By Pitch: 1Bunt Groundout: 1

Happy Birthday Miller Park

Anybody can say they were at Miller Park’s first Opening Day – 42,024 people in fact. That game happened on April 6, 2001.  But only REAL FANS can say they were at the second game.  I went to that game, and I’ll tell you about it after a quick recap of the opener…

In a repeat of the final series at Milwaukee County Stadium the previous year, Cincinnati again met the Brewers. Jeff D’Amico started both games for the Crew, and his first pitch in that first MP game was a strike to Barry Larkin.  At 7:17 p.m. under a closed roof, the action was underway.  It was just 43 degrees outside, but 72 degrees comfortable inside for fans – as had been promised all along.  Talk of a new stadium started over ten years prior to that first pitch, and the construction phase lasted well over four years.

“Every Day Chucker” – Podcast: Episode #4: MLB Should Go To 154 Games + Recognize All Record Holders From Pre 1961 Again

(Note: I meant to say Joe Dimaggio‘s 56 game hit streak, not Ted Williams in this podcast.  I was talking about the .406 season back in 1941 in this show.)

While the podcast name is still applicable (with full pun intended), due to internet problems and real life issues, my big streak of 3 days in a row with a show ended right there.

I had finished a full podcast but it failed to upload successfully and I lost it outright.  I had even done show #5 (now #4) right after. Yes I could have used that one to make 4 days in a row, but I did not have the time to pound another one out in time for Friday

I am also not sure when I will do my next podcast.  It has been a fun experiment, and I am sure when the mood strikes me next, I now have a platform to use.

Today’s theme was moving the 162 game MLB format each year to 154 Games and keep separate records for both of the totals,

Even with the 8 extra games – many old time records still hold up.  Only Barry Bonds with his 73 bombs in 2001 and Ichiro Suzuki breaking George Sisler‘s 257 hits with 262 in 2004- with Nolan Ryan‘s 383 Strikeouts are the new holders in the last 55 – 56 years.

We could effectively end the steroid era, Or at least have them separate moving forward.

Babe Ruth would be the HR king at 60, although Barry Bonds and Mark McGwire did break the record for that mark much quicker.

Still it would be a true test to see that happen.  It may also extend the LDS rounds to best of 7, and also have enough wiggle room to complete tiebreakers when the season extends by four more off days in 2018.

Prospects Of The Day: Brent Honeywell Starts Off Dominant

On this opening day, we see a lot of studs being studs and players living to the hype that was seen in them over the offseason. Brent Honeywell, Cody Bellinger, and Forrest Wall are all touted names over the last few years but Cedric Mullins continues to showcase his potential. Andrew Moore continues to showcase why he is still among the nation’s best pitchers despite having the electric stuff that normally turns the heads of both scouts and fans.

Players Of The Day

Brent Honeywell

6.0 Innings Pitched – 3 Hits – 2 Earned Runs – 12 Strikeouts – 1 Walk

In an amazing effort that ends in a loss for Montgomery Brent Honeywell was electric in his 2017 Double-A debut. He started off strong striking out Mauricio Dubon on a foul tip and finished the inning striking out Michael Reed. He then went on to strike out every batter in the second. The damage came in the fourth inning when he walked Michael Reed and then proceeded to let both Victor Roache and Jacob Nottingham with hit by pitches. With the bases loaded Honeywell allowed a single to Angel Ortega that drove in Michael Reed and Victor Roache. He escaped the inning by catching Jacob Nottingham in what is logged as a stolen base attempt but ended in a pickle.

Honeywell is one of the nation’s best pitching prospects and rated as our #23 overall prospect in our initial Top 250 MLB Prospects list. The Rays pitching situation is one of the worst in baseball for him in terms of reaching the majors. Nonetheless, Honeywell is more than likely going to see the field in Tampa in 2017. He is still working to develop a true out pitch and needs to find a way to break away from righties.

Daily Fantasy MLB DFS Picks For Fanduel And DraftKings 4/7/17

This is a much better slate we have for Friday as opposed to the terrible pitching and weather related slate we had yesterday which was an absolute mess.

That brings us to Friday slate, and our first slate for our MLB Friends League which you can find the link to sign up HERE.

Max Scherzer Scherzer is making his first start of the season against the Phillies in Philadelphia on Friday. The reason he wasn’t the open day starter was he was injured a small bit in Spring Training and they wanted him to get some extra innings in.

He’s absolutely dominated the Phillies in his career by giving up only 40 hits in 178 ABs which is a .225 BA. He’s struck out 46 batters while only giving up 1 HR.

Scherzer is part of the early games on Friday but should be a lock if you play either the early only or all day slate.

Career vs Current Phillies Roster

AVG: 0.225 [40 for 178], BABIP: 0.290, K%: 24.0, BB%: 5.2
FIP: 2.42 Strikeout: 46 Groundout:35 Single: 27 Flyout: 27 Pop Out:18 Walk: 10 Double: 9 Lineout: 7Hit By Pitch: 3 Triple: 2 Home Run:2 Double Play: 1 Fielders Choice Out: 1 Bunt Groundout: 1 Sac Bunt: 1 Bunt Pop Out: 1 Grounded Into DP: 1

Ivan Nova Talk about reinvigorating your career 10 fold. Ever since last trade deadline when the Yankees sent Nova to the Pirates, he was a completely different pitcher. He gets a great matchup against the Braves with who he has only given up 18 hits in 73 ABs (.247 BA) while getting 19 ground outs, 12 strike outs and only 2 HRs.

Absolutely love him for both cash and GPPs tonight. Nova has a 14.6 K% and only a 4.9 BB% against the Braves and could be a sneaky play tonight.

Career vs Current Braves Roster

AVG: 0.247 [18 for 73], BABIP: 0.238, K%: 14.6, BB%: 4.9
FIP: 4.69 Groundout: 19 Strikeout:12 Single: 11 Flyout: 10 Lineout: 8Double: 4 Grounded Into DP: 3 Sac Fly: 3 Home Run: 3 Walk: 3 Sac Bunt: 2 Pop Out: 2 Forceout: 1Intent Walk: 1

Steven Wright He’s the 2nd highest priced pitcher after Scherzer on the All-Day slate over at Fanduel. That seems crazy considering Wright is going up against the AL

Rookie of the Year Michael Fulmer. Knuckleball pitchers are always scary to take because at any given night they could be well off of their game and get slaughtered or be pulled early.

It’s true that Wright hasn’t given up much to the Tigers with 9 hits in 33 ABs (.273 BA) with 6 strikeouts and only 1 HR given up. He makes a very expensive GPP-only play on today’s slate.

Career vs Current Tigers Roster

AVG: 0.273 [9 for 33], BABIP: 0.308, K%: 16.2, BB%: 10.8
FIP: 4.83 Flyout: 7 Strikeout: 6Groundout: 6 Single: 6 Walk: 4 Pop Out: 2 Double: 2 Double Play: 1Home Run: 1 Forceout: 1 Lineout:1

Value/Sleeper Pitchers:

Luis Severino Now I know exactly what you’re thinking. “You’re only putting him on there because you’re a Yankees fan.” WRONG. It’s true that he struggled mightily last season with a 3-8 record and a 5.83 ERA but some of that is due to the anemic Yankee’s offense before the trade deadline.

He had a pretty damn good Spring and even added a pitch to his arsenal with the help of Pedro “Who’s Your Daddy” Martinez and that makes Sevy a very interesting sleeper/GPP pick for your Friday night slate. He’s also had some success against the Oriole’s offense.

Career vs Current Orioles Roster

AVG: 0.170 [9 for 53], BABIP: 0.139, K%: 22.0, BB%: 8.5
FIP: 6.09 Strikeout: 13 Groundout:11 Pop Out: 6 Flyout: 6 Walk: 5Home Run: 4 Lineout: 4 Double: 4Field Error: 3 Single: 1 Hit By Pitch:1 Fielders Choice Out: 1
