Tigers Trade Justin Wilson & Alex Avila; Fare A Bit Better

In what was a trade that was a foregone conclusion, the Detroit Tigers have traded closer Justin Wilson and catcher Alex Avila to the Chicago Cubs for minor league infielder Jeimer Candelario and another minor league infielder Isaac Paredes. In addition to the two minor leaguers’ the Tigers will also receive cash or a player to be named later.
The defending champion Cubs have a 2.5 game lead over the surprising Milwaukee Brewers currently, but have struggled mightily with their bullpen and were looking for a catcher after trading away the clubhouse cancer that is known as Miguel Montero.
Justin Wilson came to the Tigers in 2015, when he was acquired from the New York Yankees for Luis Cessa and Chad Green. Wilson had his ups and downs last year, but came out strong to start the season and took over for Francisco Rodriguez as the closer after K-Rod looked like he was throwing BP to the other team. Since taking over as the closer, Wilson has a 3.65 ERA, a .205 average against, with 29 K’s, and 11 saves, blowing 2 saves in 13 chances.

Sully Baseball Podcast – Eireann Dolan talks about Sean Doolittle’s trade to Washington and avocados – July 20, 2017

Friend of the Podcast Eireann Dolan returns to talk about her fiancee Sean Doolittle and his trade to the Washington Nationals. Somehow we talked about The Muppets Take Manhattan and fresh avocados as well.

Tigers Fleeced In Trade Of J.D. Martinez

In case you were under a rock yesterday, or at least not on social media, the Tigers finally moved J.D. Martinez in a four player trade to the Arizona Diamondbacks. With Martinez’s free-agency around the corner and a forecasting of a annual salary approaching or exceeding $20MM a year to sign him, the writing was on the wall if the Tigers found themselves out of the race, which of course they are. The Tigers received SS/3B Dawel Lugo, SS/2B Sergio Alcantara, and SS/2B Jose King. Dawel was rated by MLB Pipeline as the 4th best prospect in the organization, with Alcantara 15th, and King outside of the top 30.
The Diamondbacks get what some are referring to as the top bat available at the deadline in J.D., who was hitting .305 with 16 homers after missing the first six weeks of the season and just coming off AL Player of the Week honors. Before this season, J.D. had been averaging 28 homers a year and a .299 average with an OPS of .898. Again though, with the Tigers current payroll issues, and now in a rebuilding mode, it was time for J.D. to go.

Milwaukee Brewers History: July 9-18, 1982
This weekend the Milwaukee Brewers honored the 1982 World Series team with special promotions and ceremonies. I’ve done my fair share of reminiscing of that team over the weekend, and it got me thinking…what exactly were the Brewers up to on these dates in 1982?
I vaguely remembered some of the details from the research for my Brewers book, but started revisiting that specific era (July 14-16, 1982) again to put myself back in the right frame of mind for this blog post. So here are the details…

Daily Fantasy Baseball Lineup Picks (7/14/17): MLB DFS Advice for FanDuel and DraftKings
Baseball is finally back after the 2017 All-Star Break. As we predicted, Aaron Judge was victorious in the HR derby and the American League took it down once again. Enough of that though, we are back with what should be a very exciting second half of the season and we have some big names back off the DL (Madison Bumgarner anyone?) and should be treated to some great baseball. Let’s look at today’s slate because we have all been waiting too long to play some MLB DFS.

Sully Baseball Podcast – Thoughts on the All Star Game, Satchel Paige, Jose Reyes and the 1996 Padres – July 12, 2017

The All Star Break lumbers on. I give some All Star Game rule changes and make a suggestion for the Marlins to honor Satchel Paige.
Meanwhile, the Mets stupidly honor Jose Reyes and I figure out which San Diego Padres team should have won.

The Curious Case of Clyde Wright
Clyde “Skeeter” Wright had his name etched in the Milwaukee Brewers record books in 1974, although not for what anyone would have expected after he was acquired. Wright became the only Brewers pitcher to lose 20 games in a single season after he posted a 9-20 record.
It has often been argued that to achieve a 20-game loss season in baseball means those specific starters were actually very good. The list of pitchers on the all-time list include 20-game winners and members of the Hall of Fame. Some won and lost 20 games in the same season – the most recent being Phil Niekro of the Atlanta Braves with a 21-20 record in 1979.

MLB Reports Is Picking A Aaron Judge/Giancarlo Stanton HR Derby Final
Yeah, quite a prognostication I know, but we have picked perfectly in HR Derby*s the last three years we have put out predictions.
For the record here are the Odds For The EVENT (Courtesy of betdsi.com)
- Aaron Judge +150
- Giancarlo Stanton +180
- Cody Bellinger +400
- Miguel Sano +1300
- Justin Bour +1500
- Mike Moustakas +1700
- Gary Sanchez +1900
- Charlie Blackmon +2200
The big boys are just in a class of power of their own in Judge and Stanton…
We will put down $180 on Judge (pays $450) and $165 on Stanton (pays $462). If either one wins that will be at least $105 profit on the board with $345 in bets.
If it were a different venue than Marlins Park, perhaps we would give some of the other guys a shot, but this park is spacious.
Whatever happens tonight can there please be irreversible damage to the HR monstrous celebration organism that pops up after Marlins jacks!!
Kal Daniels 1987 Topps – Sully Baseball Card of the Day for July 8, 2017
Kal Daniels was a player whose career began with a bang and faded out before his 30th birthday.
He is exactly the kind of player that would have taken PEDs in the 1990s but sure didn’t look like he did in the 1980’s. He also intersected with Pete Rose, Marge Schott and Darry Strawberry in memorable ways.
Kalovski Daniels was drafted by the Reds as the 7th pick overall in the 1982 draft out of Middle Georgia College. By the time he arrived in Cincinnati for the 1986 season, he was a talented left handed hitting outfielder in a crowded outfield. Eddie Milner, Dave Parker and Eric Davis were all established. But Daniels’ .320 average and .917 OPS in 207 plate appearances got manager Pete Rose’s attention.
In 1987, Milner went to San Francisco and Daniels got his playing time. He batted .334, homered 26 times, stole 26 bases and…

Classic Matchups – Milwaukee vs. Baltimore on June 3, 1980
The Milwaukee Brewers played in the American League East division from 1972-93. In 2017, the Brewers will play many of their old foes from the East in Interleague matchups. Baltimore, Boston, Toronto, and the New York Yankees are all on the schedule this season. To celebrate the glory days of the old AL East, I’ve created a “classic opponents” series of blog posts.
Milwaukee welcomes Baltimore to Miller Park this afternoon to kick off a three game series. Back on June 3, 1980, Moose Haas of the Brewers came home to Baltimore to try to pick up his first win in front of family and friends. Haas helped his team win the Baltimore City Sandlot Championship held at Memorial Stadium when he was 16 years old. This time he’d be facing the likes of Al Bumbry, Eddie Murray, and his personal nemesis, Lee May.

Pete Smith: Triple Play Maestro of The Boston Red Sox
Anyone whose time in the major leagues exceeds for than a season or two should consider themselves very lucky given the number of people who fail to even get a call up. For those who do make it but their time ends up being relatively short, packing in as many memorable experiences is exceedingly important. Former Boston Red Sox pitcher Pete Smith may have only had a brief cup of coffee as a big leaguer but created memories that could be envied by even the most grizzled veterans.
