Macho Row: The 1993 Phillies and Baseball’s Unwritten Code- A Review

Although they lost the World Series to the Toronto Blue Jays in dramatic fashion, the 1993 Philadelphia Phillies were one of the most iconic teams in baseball history. With a roster comprised of long-haired, grubby outcasts, they captivated the country once they started winning and proved they were no joke. However, they were not built to last and were gone as quickly as they arrived (The Phillies wouldn’t have another winning season until 2001) —with many of their key players never approaching the same level of effectiveness during the remainder of their careers. William C. Kashatus’ Macho Row: The 1993 Phillies and Baseball’s Unwritten Code (University of Nebraska Press, 2017) takes an in depth look at this motley crew and how they impacted the baseball scene for one fleeting season.

Tigers and Astros Are Taking Care of Business Early This Year

There are so many things that go on during the course of a 162-game season that it’s usually difficult to pinpoint one situation as the difference maker.

A turning point? Yea, that works, but saying one thing in particular was the reason behind a certain team living or not living up to expectations is hard. After all, baseball involves a ton of variables on any given night.

However, upon looking back on 2016, there’s a good chance the Detroit Tigers and Houston Astros wondered what could’ve been if they didn’t struggle so mightily against the Cleveland Indians and Texas Rangers, respectively.

Up to this point in the season, though, the narrative has been flipped on its head.

Top Prospects of the Day: Kolby Allard Outshines Michael Kopech in Pitching Duel

Thursday saw some very good pitching performances by different types of prospects. Kolby Allard and Michael Kopech went head-to-head in Double-A while pitchers Scott Blewett and Anthony Banda both had impressive games in different levels.

Kolby Allard

6 innings pitched-3 hits-0 Runs Allowed-11 strikeouts

Kolby Allard was dominant once again on Thursday night, lowering his season ERA in Double-A to 1.36. Allard keeps on showcasing his talent and it doesn’t matter what level it is, he has looked untouchable. Facing another top prospect in Michael Kopech, Allard brought his A game and it paid dividends. Allard would strike out 2 batters in each of the first 2 innings and would continue this dominance throughout the game. He did not get into much trouble the entire game, spreading out 3 singles through the 6 frames, only allowing 1 at most in an inning. Allard would leave the game after 6, but not after striking out 11 batters, tying his career high. Allard’s pitch count was 95 when he left the game.

Allard is one of the Brave’s top pitching prospects and made the jump directly from Low-A to Double-A this season and to Allard there doesn’t seem to be a difference between the levels. He is just as dominant this year as he was last year in Low-A. Allard keeps upping the ante and putting out better performance after better performance.

Seth Smith reached base 5 times, driving in 2, scoring twice and stealing a base to lead the Orioles past the Red Sox, 8-3.

Adam Jones Incident Provides Unfortunate and Unique Opportunity for the Boston Red Sox

Baltimore Orioles star slugger Adam Jones divulged after yesterday’s game against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park that he was on the receiving end of racial taunts from fans in the stands. The Red Sox swiftly made a public apology and are reportedly considering issuing lifetime bans for fans who are caught perpetrating such behavior in the future, but reaction needs to be stronger and more widespread.

Jose Reyes Is Using the Whole Field Again

The 2017 MLB regular season hasn’t exactly started how the New York Mets envisioned it. Unless they anticipated an 11-14 record and multiple injuries to impact players, that is.

One of the biggest disappointments throughout the first few weeks was Jose Reyes‘ performance at the plate. An integral part of the Mets’ offense at the top of their lineup, manager Terry Collins was forced to move his third baseman to the bottom third because he was in such a deep slump.

How bad was it, exactly? On April 23rd, he sported an uninspiring .104/.189/.134 triple slash with a .158 wOBA and a wRC+ of -3 (and no, that’s not a typo).

While he hasn’t been installed back into the top of the lineup just yet — Michael Conforto is doing quite fine at the moment — Reyes has caught fire after a couple days away from the field. Since April 26th, the veteran is slashing .391/.462/.913 with a .559 wOBA and a wRC+ of 252.

What’s been the cause of him busting out of his slump? The evidence is pretty clear in his batted-ball profile.

Top Prospects of the Day: Chance Adams Continues To Thrive in Double A

There were some nice pitching performances across all levels Monday night, but Chance Adams’ continued domination over his Double-A competition stood out most. Royals top prospect Josh Staumont also found his way back onto our daily lists because he recorded 12 more strikeouts in a single outing yesterday and was throwing more strikes than ever. Offensively, Yandy Diaz and Magneuris Sierra each had themselves big days at the plate and are helping skeptics believe they’re turning corners in their own respective ways.

Chance Adams

6 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 3 BB, 5 K

This is Chance Adams’ second full season as a starter and the results do not vary, they’re just dominant. Through six innings of work on Monday night, Adams allowed just two hits and no runs to the Harrisburg Senators. He did walk three but struck out five over that span, too. It’s not unlike Adams to walk his fair share of opposition, and his three walks Monday aren’t a surprise, but it’s easier to brush them aside when he effortlessly forces soft contact with a solid mid-90s fastball that can touch 97 mph at times and a slider that moves plenty from side to side in the mid-80s.

In addition to Adams’ fastball-slider combo, he nicely rounds out his repertoire as a starting pitching candidate for the Yankees by mixing in an average changeup and curveball that’s under construction.

Adams is generally regarded as a top 10 prospect in this deep Yankees farm system, and is featured at No. 9 on our own list. This season so far, Adams is mowing down his Double-A competition and at this rate he might warrant an end-of-the-year promotion to Scranton.

The 10 Worst MLB Players So Far in 2017

With the 162-game grind that is an MLB regular season, players and teams are bound to go through rough patches. It’s inevitable, and while everyone tries to minimize them as much as possible, the struggles can sometimes wear on for much longer than anyone would like.

Going through a bad month is not uncommon around baseball. It’s just difficult to have it happen to a player or team in April because they’re immediately trying to dig out of a hole in an effort to get back to some level of normalcy.

Unfortunately, plenty of players find themselves in a hole like this once the calendar flips from April to May. We’ve already touched upon the league’s 10 best players so far, but who’s on the other end of the spectrum?

The following 10 players — five starting pitchers and five hitters — have a ton of work to do before they can be happy with what their respective stat lines look like.

The 10 Best MLB Players So Far in 2017

There are still five months left in the 2017 MLB regular season, so there is plenty left to be decided. When we look back on this year by the time September rolls around, we may not even remember how certain players or teams played over the first few weeks.

That doesn’t mean someone doesn’t want to see their name on this particular list, though. Right?

Every ballplayer is well aware of the ups and downs that come with the game of baseball — that’s just the way it is. The best thing anyone can do is to minimize the valleys and maximize the peaks in production as much as possible throughout any given year. However, it does make things a lot easier when they can get their respective seasons off to a fast start.

But who has been the best at doing just that? Now that May is officially upon us, we’re going to highlight 10 players overall — five position players and five starting pitchers — that have just experienced a dominant month of April.

Daily Matchups for 5/2/2017

Pitchers To Target:

Masahiro Tanaka- Not only do I love this match-up due to the fact that Tanaka is coming off a complete game shut out against Boston in 97 pitches, but these Blue Jays are a terrible hitting team this season and Mat Latos is pitching for them. What does that mean? It SHOULD mean that the Yankees are able to clobber him and give Tanaka the lead he needs to take another W tonight.

Career vs Current Blue Jays Roster

AVG: 0.178 [19 for 107], BABIP: 0.224, K%: 25.4, BB%: 5.3
FIP: 2.72 Groundout: 31 Strikeout: 29Single: 13 Lineout: 9 Walk: 6 Flyout: 6Double: 4 Pop Out: 4 Forceout: 3 Grounded Into DP: 2 Home Run: 2 Field Error: 2Fielders Choice Out: 1 Hit By Pitch: 1 Bunt Groundout: 1

Chris Sale- Look at his elbow in this picture. It just makes me cringe as his 112 lb frame has held up this long. He’s coming off a tremendous game against the Yankees although it was a loss since his team couldn’t muster up a single run for him. This should be a different story tonight against Alec Asher and the Orioles. He’s struck them out at a 26% rate while only walking 7.7%.

Career vs Current Orioles Roster

AVG: 0.258 [24 for 93], BABIP: 0.317, K%: 26.0, BB%: 7.7
FIP: 4.16 Strikeout: 27 Single: 17Groundout: 13 Flyout: 11 Walk: 8 Pop Out: 7Forceout: 4 Home Run: 4 Lineout: 4Double: 3 Grounded Into DP: 2 Hit By Pitch:2 Bunt Groundout: 1 Sac Bunt: 1

Jon Lester- Love this match-up against Jeremy Hellickson and the Philadelphia Phillies. He is coming off of a rough start against the Pirates where he lasted only 5.2 innings, gave up 10 hits, 5 ERs, 5 Ks in 107 pitches. People might see this and be off of him but that’s what makes him an intriguing GPP option.

Career vs Current Phillies Roster

AVG: 0.226 [14 for 62], BABIP: 0.293, K%: 30.8, BB%: 3.1
FIP: 2.70 Strikeout: 19 Single: 10Groundout: 9 Flyout: 7 Pop Out: 3 Lineout:3 Home Run: 2 Walk: 2 Double: 2 Bunt Groundout: 2 Grounded Into DP: 1 Fielders Choice Out: 1 Forceout: 1 Field Error: 1Strikeout – DP: 1 Sac Fly: 1

Top Prospects of the Weekend

This weekend saw some very impressive offensive showings as Carter Kieboom put on a fireworks display for Hagerstown and Dustin Fowler hit for the cycle. The Braves’ young pitching depth continued to show their force, this time it was Sean Newcomb with the dominant outing. Francisco Mejia would go deep for the first time in 2017.

Carter Kieboom

7 at-bats- 5 hits- 3 Home Runs- 5 RBIs- 4 runs scored

Nationals’ shortstop prospect Carter Kieboom had himself a day on Sunday. He went 5-7 with 3 home runs in Hagerstown’s beating of Lexington, 22-4, on the same day the Nationals put down a similar score against the Mets. Kieboom began his 5 hit day with a double to left field in the first inning. Kieboom would hit his first home run of the day to left center in the 3rd inning and would follow that up with another home run in the 4th inning. He would fly out in the 5th and then in the 7th would hit his 3rd home run of the night, this one a solo shot. Kieboom would tack on a single later in the game and would get out again in the 9th, popping out to the catcher. Kieboom would finish the day with only 5 RBIs, as there weren’t many runners on base when he hit the home runs.

Kieboom is the Nationals #4 prospect, according to Baseball Ranks. The shortstop is one of three Kieboom brothers playing pro ball and is very raw, but there is a lot to like about him. He has legit bat speed and he flashed his power today. Defensively he is average, but he has plenty of time to improve upon that aspect of his game. Kieboom is only 19 and he definitely turned some heads today with his epic game.

This Day in Milwaukee Brewers History: A Robin Yount and Hank Aaron Hitting Clinic

An old well-known expression is “April showers bring May flowers.”  On May 1, 1975, the Milwaukee Brewers showered hits all over Milwaukee County Stadium in a 17-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers.  Every Brewers starter reached base that day, but it was also one of the rare times that both Hank Aaron and Robin Yount went ballistic on the opposition in the same game.

Anthony Rendon had a game for the ages, going 6 for 6, slugging 3 homers, scoring 5 runs and driving in a mind boggling 10 runs himself as the Nationals smothered the Mets, 23-5.

Patrick Corbin gave up 2 hits and no runs over 6 1/3 innings. He didn’t get a decision but set up the Diamondbacks walk off 2-0 win over Colorado.

Miguel Sano collected 3 hits, including a homer, driving in 5 to help the Twins beat the Royals 7-5.

Dallas Keuchel continued his fast start with 7 2/3 innings allowing 3 hits and 1 run while striking out 9 Oakland batters en route to a 7-2 victory.

Anthony Rendon’s Record-Setting Day Erased an Abysmal Start

In case you missed the New York Mets and Washington Nationals face off in the final game of a three-game weekend series, there’s a pretty good way to describe what happened. All you need to know is that Nats third baseman Anthony Rendon did more at the plate himself than the entire Mets offense.

On a day in which Washington accumulated 23 runs on 23 hits, Rendon was the standout star — which is inevitable when you go 6-for-6 with three home runs, five runs scored and 10 RBI.

It’s hard to escape the spotlight following something like that.

There were a lot of firsts that came with this, as well. He was the first player to record a 10-RBI game since Garret Anderson did it back in 2007, but this factoid pretty much takes the cake.

Boston Red Sox History Tidbits

Baseball is fun as much for the trivia, stories and tidbits of knowledge that accumulate as for the actual action that takes place on the field. The Boston Red Sox are one of the most storied franchises in the sport, and as such have a rich trove of factoids. Here is a sampling.
