Who Owns October in MLB Playoffs 2016 (#WOO) Tallies Updated for October 20, 2016

Well, the Cubs bats are awake and the pennant is there to lose.
Time to see who owned October.
Each winning team for every post season game gets a pitcher and a hitter who earn a full WOO (Who Owns October.)
And at my discretion, I award a 1/2 WOO’S to a worthy player on the losing team.
At the end of the post season, we will see who had the highest WOO total as a pitcher and a hitter.

NLCS Game 5:
Receiving 1 WOO’s
Jon Lester threw 7 strong innings, allowing 1 run and 5 hits and pushed the Cubs past the Dodgers and within a game of the World Series, 8-4.
Addison Russell homered and doubled, scoring twice, and put the Cubs on top for good against the Dodgers, 8-4.
Receiving 1/2 WOO’s
Corey Seager got a pair of hits but could not be driven in as the Dodgers fell to the Cubs, 8-4..

ALCS Game 5 and NLCS Game 4:
Receiving 1 WOO’s
Francisco Lindor collected 3 hits and scored the first run in the 3-0 Cleveland victory that clinched the pennant in Toronto.
Ryan Merritt threw only his second ever major league start and made it count. He pitched shutout ball into the 5th inning and allowed the Indians to tap into their bullpen, who finished up the games, series and pennant, 3-0 over the Blue Jays.
Mike Montgomery threw a pair of shutout innings out of the bullpen and stopped the Dodgers from getting back into the game as the Cubs poured it on, 10-2.
Addison Russell woke up from a nasty slump to go 3 for 5, including a 2 run homer, to lead the Cubs past the Dodgers, 10-2.
Receiving 1/2 WOO’s
Jose Bautista singled and hit a double in the 9th inning but was stranded as Toronto was eliminated in the ALCS by Cleveland, 3-0.
Justin Turner reached base twice and drove in the Dodgers only 2 runs as they were blown out in Game 4 by the Cubs, 10-2.

Five Players to Watch in the Dominican Winter League
Tomorrow will be the fifth edition of Opening Day in the Dominican Winter League (DWL). The opening game will feature Aguilas Cibaeñas vs. their rivals from the northern region, Gigantes Del Cibao.
The DWL has functioned as a bridge to showcase players to major league clubs. This talent was on full display last year as the league produced quite a few notable storylines.
Joey Rickard was the league MVP during the DWL regular season and was deemed “MLB Ready” by scouts. Rickard was selected during the Rule 5 draft by the Baltimore Orioles serving as a part-time starter and backup role. Another interesting story was Tyler White, a Winter League MVP candidate, this performance helped him be considered for the starting job at first base for the Houston Astros. White ended up winning the position out of spring training and started the year off on a torrid pace before MLB pitchers figured him out.
The DWL has a competition level that is closely behind Japan. One of the keys to the league is making adjustments as the players face many different levels of pitching and batting. In one at bat you could be confronted with a 100 MPH fastball. Then next at bat you would be facing a veteran pitcher pitching low 80s with pinpoint accuracy and movement.
This article will cover the top 5 players to watch in the DWL, and then try to figure out who might be the next Joey Rickard or Tyler White.

ALCS Game 4 and NLCS Game 3:
Receiving 1 WOO’s
Josh Donaldson homered to put Toronto on top and played great defense to help the Blue Jays stay alive over the Indians, 5-1.
Yasmani Grandal hit a 2 run homer and drove in another to lead the Dodgers past the Cubs, 6-0.
Rich Hill shutout the Cubs over 6 strong innings, allowing 2 hits and striking out 6 as the Dodgers took control of the series, 6-0.
Aaron Sanchez kept the Blue Jays from getting swept by Cleveland by throwing 6 innings, allowing 2 hits and 1 run, earning the 5-1 decision.
Receiving 1/2 WOO’s
Kris Bryant went 2 for 4 but could not be driven in by his teammates as the Cubs fell to LA, 6-0.
Roberto Perez doubled home the Indians only run in their 5-1 loss in Toronto.

ALCS Game 3:
Receiving 1 WOO’s
Andrew Miller highlighted a brilliant performance by the Cleveland bullpen, who combined for 8 1/3 innings. Miller earned the save by recording the final 4 Toronto outs, 3 by strikeouts, giving him 20 K’s in 9 post season innings, as the Indians won, 4-2.
Mike Napoli homered and later scored a key insurance run to help Cleveland beat Toronto, 4-2.
Receiving 1/2 WOO’s
Michael Saunders launched a game tying homer in the second inning. The Blue Jays would end up dropping the game to Cleveland 4-2.

NLCS Game 2:
Receiving 1 WOO’s
Adrian Gonzalez got on base twice and hit a solo homer that was the only run of the game as the Dodgers blanked the Cubs, 1-0.
Clayton Kershaw threw 7 innings of shutout ball, wiggling out of trouble in the 7th and finishing with 2 hits, 1 walk and earned the razor thin 1-0 for the Dodgers over the Cubs.
Receiving 1/2 WOO’s
Javier Baez broke up the Kershaw no hitter and made some strong defensive plays in the field in the Cubs 1-0 loss to the Dodgers.
Kyle Hendricks pitched into the 6th, allowing 1 run over 5 1/3 innings, and took the hard luck Cubs 1-0 defeat to the Dodgers.

Gregory Polanco Had A Great 2016 Season, but 2017 Could Be Even Better
Gregory Polanco made huge strides in 2016, but this Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder could be in store for an even bigger 2017 season. At only 25 years old, Polanco made significant improvements to his swing and approach at the plate in 2016. He finished the season with a .258/.323/.463 slash line, 34 doubles, four triples, 22 home runs, 86 RBIs, 79 runs, and 17 stolen bases. Out of all Major League hitters this year, only 14 had more than 20 home runs and 15 stolen bases. Out of those 15, only five are 25 years old or younger (Gregory Polanco, Bryce Harper, Mookie Betts, Mike Trout, Wil Myers). As you can see, Polanco is in a very elite group of young talent, but after looking more into his numbers, his game could explode in the upcoming seasons.

Ho hum… another day and another pair of heart stopping playoff games.
Time to see who owned October.
Each winning team for every post season game gets a pitcher and a hitter who earn a full WOO (Who Owns October.)
And at my discretion, I award a 1/2 WOO’S to a worthy player on the losing team.
At the end of the post season, we will see who had the highest WOO total as a pitcher and a hitter.

ALCS Game 2 and NLCS Game 1:
Receiving 1 WOO’s
Jon Lester allowed 4 hits and 1 run, on a solo homer, over 6 innings. He was pulled, probably too early, and did not get a decision but helped set up the Cubs’ 8-4 win over the Dodgers.
Francisco Lindor collected a pair of hits and drove in the run that put Cleveland up for good, 2-1 over the Blue Jays.
Miguel Montero launched a 2 out, 2 strike bottom of the 8th game tying pinch hit grand slam to give the Cubs a dramatic 8-4 Game 1 victory over Los Angeles.
Josh Tomlin allowed only 3 hits and 1 run over 5 2/3 innings, striking out 6 and giving the Indians a victory in his emergency start over Toronto, 2-1.

ALCS Game 1:
Receiving 1 WOO’s
Corey Kluber threw 6 1/3 shutout innings, allowing 6 hits and earning the 2-0 Game 1 decision for Cleveland over Toronto.
Francisco Lindor got 2 hits including the 2 run homer that provided the Indians with all the offense they needed to take Game 1 of the ALCS 2-0 over the Blue Jays.
Receiving 1/2 WOO’s
Marco Estrada went the distance, allowing 6 hits and 2 runs over 8 innings. He would, however, be saddled with a hard luck 2-0 loss for Toronto over the Indians.
Edwin Encarnacion doubled and singled but could not score as the Blue Jays were blanked by the Indians, 2-0.

NL Division Series Game 5:
Receiving 1 WOO’s
Kenley Jansen entered the game in the 7th with nobody out and the Nationals rallying. He stopped the momentum and threw a career high 51 pitched over 2 1/3 tense innings to help preserve the 4-3 Los Angeles win.
Joc Pederson reached base 3 times and launched a game tying homer in the 7th that helped turn the deciding Game 5 around for the Dodgers as they topped Washington, 4-3.
Receiving 1/2 WOO’s
Daniel Murphy reached base 3 times and scored. But he popped up in a critical moment in the 9th and could not push the Nationals over the top as they fell short to Los Angeles, 4-3.
Max Scherzer was brilliant over 6 shutout innings, allowing 4 hits and striking out 7. But he let up a game tying homer in the 7th and was pulled, leading to a disastrous 4-3 finish for the Nationals against the Dodgers.

Asdrubal Cabrera’s Drastic Improvement vs. Fastballs Turned His 2016 Season Around
New York Mets shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera has been with the organization for just one season, but he’s instantly become a fan favorite. A strong April helped start his tenure on a positive note, but it was an epic late-season surge that instantly brings a smile to every Mets fan.
It’s interesting how one player transformed from being the biggest rally killer to the team’s most dependable run producer, but that’s a microcosm of the Mets’ 2016 performance.
His turnaround can be credited toward a number of things, but there was one specific area that tells a lot of the story.

NL Division Series Game 4:
Receiving 1 WOO’s
Aroldis Chapman struck out the side and clinched the Division Series for the Cubs, 6-5 in San Francisco.
Adrian Gonzalez homered and walked, driving in a pair and helped the Dodgers force a deciding game with Washington with a 6-5 final.
Clayton Kershaw struck out 11 Nationals in 6 2/3 innings and doubled and scored.The bullpen let the inherited runners score, making his ERA look ugly, but in the end he set up the Dodgers dramatic 6-5 victory.
Ben Zobrist hit a key double that sparked the Cubs stunning 9th inning rally, driving in a run and scoring a run to break the Giants hearts, 6-5.
Receiving 1/2 WOO’s
Conor Gillaspie continued his October heroics with 4 hits, an RBI and a run scored. But he could not prevent the bullpen disaster that is the 2016 Giants and the Cubs took the game and the series, 6-5.
Matt Moore allowed 2 hits and 1 earned run and 1 unearned run over 8 brilliant innings, striking out 10 along the way. But the Giants bullpen had a total meltdown and the Cubs scored 4 in the 9th and completed the Division Series, 6-5.
Daniel Murphy drove in 4 runs with a pair of hits including a game tying knock in the 7th. The Nationals would lose the game to the Dodgers, 6-5.

The 2017 MLB regular season is the furthest thing from our minds right now with the postseason in full swing, but not for the majority of the league.
Most are at home watching the playoffs, trying to figure out how they could be playing baseball next October instead of sitting on their respective couches. The winter months don’t include any on-field action, but the Hot Stove does plenty to keep us warm and occupied until pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training.
Before the slate officially gets wiped clean for the coming year, front offices around baseball put in a lot of hours to decide what pieces could make their team a playoff contender. Here are 10 MLB teams who have a very important few months ahead:
Is Adam Eaton Underrated or Just a “Good” Ballplayer?

The Chicago White Sox posted a 78-84 record and really lost pace after the All-Star break, finishing 16 games behind the division-winning Cleveland Indians. This was a poorly constructed team that had serious flaws on the roster.
They addressed exactly one of the five needs I outlined last December by shifting Adam Eaton to right field. However, that effectively shifted their problem over to center field.
Chicago’s logic for doing this was nuanced in the belief they’d extract more value by pairing Eaton with a replacement-level center fielder instead of the other way around. Fair enough, but what did it do to Eaton as a player?

NL Division Series and AL Division Series Game 3:
Receiving 1 WOO’s
Coco Crisp hit a key two run homer that helped the Indians sweep the Red Sox, 4-3.
Shawn Kelley stopped any Dodger momentum by retiring all the batters he faced in the 7th and 8th, striking out 8. The Nationals would put the game away in the 9th and win Game 3, 8-3.
Derek Law threw 2 no hit shutout innings after Bumgarner was lifted that helped set up the Giants come from behind rally and ultimately a 6-5 win over the Cubs.
Joe Panik reached base 5 times and delivered the walk off double in the 13th as the Giants held on to beat the Cubs, 6-5.
Josh Tomlin baffled the Red Sox over 5 plus innings, allowing 4 hits and 2 runs but kept getting first pitch strikes with his slow stuff while earning the 4-3 decision for the clinching Indians.
Jayson Werth got 3 hits, including a towering homer, and a walk, driving in 2 and scoring 2 to lead the Nationals past Los Angeles, 8-3.

Mark Melancon closed the 5-2 Nationals victory with a scoreless ninth, saving the game against the Dodgers.
Daniel Murphy reached base 4 times, scoring a run and driving in 2 to help the Nationals take game 2 of the Division Series over Los Angeles, 5-2.
Roberto Osuna threw a scoreless 9th and 10th to send Game 3 into extras and earned the 7-6 decision for Toronto over the Rangers.

Don Larsen’s Perfect Game: Recalling the Pitching Gem On Its 60th Anniversary
Yesterday marked the 60th anniversary of one of baseball’s most cherished feats. On October 8th, 1956, New York Yankees starting pitcher Don Larsen threw the first and onlyperfect game in the history of the World Series (and playoffs). Not only is it one of the major gold standards in the sport, it also still captivates fans as much today as it did six decades ago.
The right-hander’s perfect came in Game 5 at Yankee Stadium against the Brooklyn Dodgers, giving the Bronx Bombers a 3-2 Series lead. They ultimately took the championship two days later in the 7th and deciding game. Here are some interesting facts about Larsen and his perfect game.
