Didi Gregorius had a mind boggling opener in the Bronx, reaching base 5 times, doubling and smashing a pair of 3 run homers, driving in 8 altogether, to blow open a tight game with Seattle to a decisive 11-4 Yankees win.
Jakob Junis threw 7 shutout innings, allowing 3 hits and struck out 6 Tigers as the Royals won their first game by a razor thin 1-0 final.
Christian Villanueva clobbered three homers, driving in 5, to lead the Padres past the Rockies, 8-4, for their first win of the year.
Shane Carle came out of the bullpen to throw 3 1/3 one hit shutout innings to stop the bleeding and allow the Braves to give the Nationals their first loss of the year, 13-6.

Who Owns October (#WOO) Tallies Updated For October 21, 2017

FS1
Toughest WOO call I’ve had in a long time was between Charlie Morton’s 5 inning start and Lance McCullers Jr’s 4 inning save. I went with Morton but nothing bust respect for McCullers and clinching the pennant.
So who owned October?
Each winning team for every post season game gets a pitcher and a hitter who earn a full WOO (Who Owns October.)
And at my discretion, I award a 1/2 WOO’S to a worthy player on the losing team.
At the end of the post season, we will see who had the highest WOO total as a pitcher and a hitter.

Receiving 1/2 WOO
Greg Bird smacked a double, the Yankees last extra base hit of the season, but was thrown out at home trying to score the tying run. He would also fly out to end the ALCS and clinch the pennant for the Astros, 4-0.
David Robertson threw 2 shutout innings, striking out 3 Astros but the Yankees bats were dormant in the 4-0 ALCS finale.

Ohhhh boy. This classic Yankee hater is bracing for a Bronx Pennant which I was NOT prepared for this year.
But Gary Sanchez and company are making it a magical fall for a team that has upset one 100 win team and on the verge of beating another one.
Meanwhile the defending Champs are alive for another day… now here comes Kershaw.

Well it is safe to say that Justin Verlander has worked out as a nice trade for Houston. Both he and Kershaw are former Cy Young winners trying to exorcise their October demons. One of them threw a complete game victory.
Meanwhile Carlos Correa and Yasiel Puig showed a flair for the dramatic, especially with homers that juuuuuuust cleared the wall.

Ohhhh we were so close to a Game 5 in Houston with no clue what pitchers were available. Ah well… congrats to the Astros and nice season Red Sox.
The Dodgers have their groove back and finished the only sweep so far. I guess the Diamondbacks weren’t the threat we all thought they were going to be.
Meanwhile Max Scherzer wanted to make history. Instead the Nationals are almost history themselves.
The Yankees of all teams have pushed the mighty Indians to the brink

Andrew Benitendi hit a 2 run go ahead homer to give Boston hope. But the Astros came back to win 5-4 and clinch.
Archie Bradley threw 2 2/3 innings of 1 hit shutout ball to keep the Diamondbacks in the game but the Dodgers topped them 3-1 to finish the series.
Daniel Descalso homered to give the Diamondbacks their only run which was not enough to keep the Dodgers from sweeping the series with a 3-1 final.
Chris Sale kept the Astros scoreless for 4 brilliant innings out of the bullpen. But he could not stretch it to a 5th when he was charged with 2 runs, lost the 5-4 decision and saw the Red Sox get eliminated.
Carlos Santana hit a run homer but it wasn’t enough as the Indians could not close out the Yankees with a 7-3 final.
Max Scherzer took a no hitter into the 7th, whiffing 7 Cubs along the way. He would give up one hit and be charged with one run and the Nationals bullpen took the 2-1 defeat.

Well… we have at least ONE more day where all of the playoff series are alive. At least ONE more day where we will have four playoff games within 24 hours. The Red Sox, who looked dead from the neck up and down 3-0 before they even came to bat, woke up and clobbered Houston.
Meanwhile the Yankees bats were silent but Joe Girardi couldn’t find a way to bungle THIS one run game.
All four series are alive and well (even though 3 can end tomorrow!)

J. D. Martinez got 3 hits, including a homer, in the Diamondbacks 9-5 loss to the Dodgers.
David Price came out of the bullpen to throw 2 2/3 shutout innings and stop the bleeding. Nothing else worked however and the Astros clobbered the Red Sox, 8-2.

Well… it is safe to say Jose Altuve is ready for the big stage. When you hit 3 homers in a game, you join names like Babe Ruth, Reggie Jackson, George Brett, Albert Pujols and Adrian Beltre for all time players to smash a trio of taters. (Oddly Adam Kennedy is also on that list.)
Chris Sale, the Red Sox best hope for a victory in the post season, pulled his best Clayton Kershaw in October impersonation, and that is no compliment.
Meanwhile Terry Francona held back his ace one day but got an ace like performance from the replacement starter. The Indians took Game 1 and have a rested and ready Corey Kluber for Game 2.
Good Luck Yankees.

Well… for 1/2 an inning, everything looked perfect for Minnesota, didn’t it? Then they were out scored 8-1 after that 3 run uprising. It was fun while it lasted for Twins fans and no doubt they will be back as contenders.
But last night was about the Yankees power and their tremendously deep bullpen. The playoffs have begun.
A complete description of the rules can be found HERE.
From October 3
2017 American League Wild Card Game:
Receiving 1 WOO
Brett Gardner reached base 3 times and scored 3 times, hitting a home run along the way and led the Yankees to a come from behind 8-4 victory over the Twins in the Wild Card Game.
David Robertson stopped the bleeding with 3 1/3 innings without being charged with a run, striking out 5 Twins and getting the 8-4 decision for the Yankees in the Wild Card Game.
Receiving 1/2 WOO
Brian Dozier led off the 2017 Wild Card Game with a homer and sparked a first inning 3 run rally for the Twins. He would reach base again but the Yankee bats were too strong in the 8-4 final.
Current WOO Totals MLB 2017
Hitters ‘WOO’ MLB 2017,
Brett Gardner – Yankees 1, Brian Dozier – Twins 1/2,
Pitchers ‘WOO’ MLB 2017,
David Robertson – Yankees 1,

For this daily fantasy baseball season, each day we’ll be writing up a group of pitchers and hitters that we’re considering for our cash and GPP lineups on DraftKings and FanDuel. We’ll also provide a list of stacks to consider. As with any DFS sport, the advice below is relevant for fantasy purposes. A player or team might be better or worse from a fantasy perspective than they are in real life due to match-up, price, park factor, etc. This is important when constructing a roster.
One thing to remember outside of making sure your guy is in the lineup, is to always check the weather. Always. Make this something that is part of your basic research. Baseball games can get postponed! Your players receive no points from postponed games!

Classic Matchups – Milwaukee vs. New York on April 8, 1979
The Milwaukee Brewers played in the American League East division from 1972-93. In 2017, the Brewers will play many of their old foes from the East in Interleague matchups. Baltimore, Boston, Toronto, and the New York Yankees are all on the schedule this season. To celebrate the glory days of the old AL East, I’ve created a “classic opponents” series of blog posts.
New York was an incredibly tough opponent of those classic Brewers teams. When the two teams met, literally anything could happen from pitcher’s duels to slugfests. With so many classic games to choose from, I selected a great pitching matchup from early 1979 to profile for this blog post.
It was Tommy John’s first game in pinstripes.

The Yankees vs The Universe: Who Ya Got?

The Yankees sure are stocked with contenders for mythical “Best-Ever” status. You know the usual suspects: Ruth, Gehrig, Mantle, etc. – but they’re basically flush everywhere. In fact, if one were to compose the “All-Time Yankees Lineup,” it might be competitive with a composite “All-Time Major League Lineup” made up of players from every other franchise.
So, just for fun: The NY Yankees vs the rest of the Universe for “all-time” bragging rights. The rules: 1) To be considered for the Yankees lineup, a player must have spent the bulk of his career with the team, or barring that, have his career most closely associated with the team (the team logo on his HOF plaque might be instructive in this regard); 2) There will be no double-dipping: Since Ruth mans right field for the Yankees, he can’t be drafted by the Universe. Sully Baseball Daily Podcast – March 11, 2017

THE TEAMS THAT SHOULD HAVE WON series continues.
It is tough to feel for the Yankees and their misery needs to be graded on a curve. But I have no doubt that Yankee fans would have given anything to add 2001 to their World Series collection.
27 is not enough on this episode of The Sully Baseball Daily Podcast.
The Easiest Question in Baseball History Might Have a New Answer

Lou Gehrig.
The answer, that is. It’s always Lou Gehrig.
Actually… we’re getting ahead of ourselves. We’ll come back to answer in a minute or two. Let’s first discuss the question.
So there’s a game baseball fans like to play (and by “fans” we also include anybody, anywhere, who has ever written any words, at any time, about the sport). The game, or exercise if you prefer, is to rank the best player who ever lived at every position. Think of it as the all-time, “All-Time Starting Lineup.” Entire books have been devoted the topic, TV shows, countless articles, blog posts… it’s a favorite pastime of devotees of the national past time. Sully Baseball Daily Podcast – December 17, 2016

My final stop on my New York voyage is New Yankee Stadium. I realized that the hugeness and coldness of the stadium makes sense when you consider the pressure of carrying the Yankee label.
But across the street is the place where MOST of the glory took place. It made me bring up an Alexandre Dumas novel.
Ghosts and memories are everywhere on this episode of The Sully Baseball Daily Podcast.

In New York City, I took a look at the Yankees rebuilding process, the assumptions and the last time there were no active World Champion Yankees on the roster.
