Daily Fantasy MLB DFS Picks For DraftKings 6/11/16

P- Chris Archer (vs. Houston Astros): $10,400. I’m taking a pretty big risk here, but Archer’s strikeout ability and the Astros free swinging bats could be a great combination for this matchup. In Archer’s last start, he struck out 12 batters in six innings pitched, so hopefully he can transfer this success to Saturday. In 64 career at bats against Archer, the Astros’ lineup is batting .172, with only two XBH, 22 strikeouts, and a .229 OBP. The Houston Astros are currently ranked last overall in strikeouts, with 605 strikeouts, which is 40 more than the second place team.

P- Eduardo Rodriguez (vs. Minnesota Twins): $7,100. E-Rod has only had two starts since returning from an injury, but they have been against some very difficult offenses, the Baltimore Orioles and the Toronto Blue Jays. He will face a much easier offense on Saturday, the Minnesota Twins. In his one career start against the Twins, the Twins recorded 24 at bats, with only one run, seven strikeouts, and a .125 BA. The Twins offense is currently ranked 26th overall in runs, 19th overall in batting average, and 22nd in on base percentage.

Sully Baseball Daily Podcast – June 10, 2016

I began talking about the MLB Draft and I wound up trying to figure out the direction of my life and the podcast and somehow I compare myself to Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Typical baseball stuff.

It is an “at the cross roads” episode of The Sully Baseball Daily Podcast

DJ LeMahieu, Chris Davis, Jorge De La Rosa, Miguel Gonzalez, Scooter Gennett, Gio Gonzalez and Robinson Cano all added to their totals for Who Owns Baseball yesterday.

P- Clayton Kershaw (vs. San Francisco Giants): $13,900. In 237 career at bats against Kershaw, the Giants’ offense is batting .148, with 76 strikeouts, and only 10 walks, with a .189 OBP. Kershaw has been absolutely dominant all year long and regardless of his high price, he is a must start. In 12 starts, he is 8-1, with a 1.46 ERA, 54 hits against, 109 strikeouts, and only 6 walks in 92.2 innings pitched.

P- Ian Kennedy (vs. Chicago White Sox): $9,300. In 78 career at bats against Kennedy, the White Sox’ offense is batting .244, with 20 strikeouts, five RBIs, and a .272 OBP. The White Sox offense has also struggled quite a bit recently. In the past seven days, the White Sox rank 28th in runs scored (20), 27th in batting average (.212), and 21st in OBP (.300).

Biggest Day One Steal Of The MLB Draft

There were many people who fell in the draft on day one, but A.J. Puk might have been the biggest steal of them all. Many believed Puk would go 1st overall to the Philadelphia Phillies, but instead he slipped to 6th overall to the Oakland Athletics. He has the tangible and intangible assets to be a star in Major League Baseball.

Puk has the body and and potential of a frontline starter. He stands 6’7 and weighs 230 lbs. This left-handed pitcher from the University of Florida has gained a lot of attention since he was a freshman. He has a plus-plus fastball and his secondary pitches all have the potential to be above average.

The Padres are going to have 4 picks of the first 48 chosen in the draft today. The organization is in disarray but a good draft could turn it around. A bad draft could cost everyone their jobs.

No pressure.

Daily Fantasy MLB DFS Picks For DraftKings 6/5/16

Typically I post a lineup that fits the cash limits of DraftKings, but I will be on a plane to Los Angeles today (going to see Clayton Kershaw pitch!), so I have decided to post an article with multiple options.

P- Jose Fernandez (vs. Miami Marlins): Fernandez has been on fire recently. So far in 2016, he has thrown 67.2 innings, with an 8-2 record, 2.53 ERA, 50 hits against, 96 strikeouts, and 25 walks. The Mets are currently ranked 27th overall in run production, so Fernandez shouldn’t have any problems shutting down their offense.

P- Corey Kluber (vs. Kansas City Royals): In 216 career at bats against Kluber, the Royals’ lineup is batting .218, with four home runs, 22 RBIs, 52 strikeouts, and a .245 OBP. Kluber did struggle in his last start (7 IP, 6 ER, 6 Ks), but prior to that start, he had two quality starts. Based on his past success against the Royals, he could be a very solid option on Sunday.

Saturday could be a very rough day for pitchers, which is why I’m spending more money on hitters.

Out of the 15 games on the slate, 11 games are being played at a stadium that has at least a 10 MPH wind blowing towards the outfield.

Weather can play a huge role in daily fantasy, which is why the intense winds on Saturday could really shake up some of the potential pitching match-ups.

P – Aaron Nola (vs. Cincinnati Reds): $9,500

P – Ervin Santana (vs. Cleveland Indians): $7,000

Daily Fantasy MLB DFS Picks For DraftKings 5/11/16

Francisco Liriano

Trey Rose (Featured BBBA Fantasy Baseball Writer/Owner – dynastydigest.sportsblog.com)

P – Francisco Liriano (@ Cincinnati Reds): $9,000. Liriano has been fairly consistent over his first few starts in 2016. He has thrown 35 innings, with a 3-1 record, 3.60 ERA, 39 strikeouts, and 19 walks.

He will be facing the 25th ranked offense on Wednesday, which is a great matchup for Liriano.

The Reds’ lineup has really struggled against the left-handed throughout his career.

In 170 career at bats against Liriano, the Reds’ lineup is batting .224, with 5 home runs, 40 strikeouts, and a .298 OBP. These numbers are very much in favor of Liriano on Wednesday.

He is currently averaging 15.8 points per game on DraftKings this season.

P – Wei-Yin Chen (vs. Milwaukee Brewers): $7,800. Chen is facing another struggling offense on Wednesday.

The Milwaukee Brewers are currently ranked as the 22nd overall offense in Major League Baseball.

In 62 career at bats against Chen, the Brewers’ lineup is batting .210, with 1 home run, 17 strikeouts, and a .258 OBP.

There will be a 12 MPH wind blowing towards home plate, which is a great sign for Chen considering this should limit the number of potential home runs.

Chen has faced the Milwaukee lineup one time this year and he got the win after throwing 6.2 innings, giving up 4 hits, 3 earned runs, 2 walks, and 4 strikeouts. Chen is averaging 12.1 points per game on DraftKings this season.

If you have any questions or comments about this article or fantasy baseball, please Tweet me. I post daily DFS lineups for Draft Kings everyday, so please make sure to follow my blog and my Twitter for updates.

P – Kevin Gausman (vs. Minnesota Twins): $8,200. Gausman has proven he is a great play in daily fantasy over his first few starts in 2016. He is currently averaging 18.8 points per game on DraftKings this season.

He will be facing the 26th ranked offense on Tuesday, whom ranks as the 4th worst in the MLB when it comes to striking out. To top it all off, there is an 11 MPH wind blowing towards home plate, so the baseball should stay in the ballpark on Tuesday.

P – Derek Holland (vs. Chicago White Sox): $6,200. Holland hasn’t been spectacular in 2016, but Tuesday could be the day to turn it around. He is facing the Chicago White Sox, whom are ranked as the 18th overall offense in the MLB. When it comes to facing left-handed pitching, the White Sox are hitting a mediocre .237.

There will also be some very favorable weather for Mr. Holland on Tuesday. In Texas, it is expected to see winds upwards of 20 MPH towards home plate, which means there is a very slim chance of any power production.

If you have any questions or comments about this article or fantasy baseball, please Tweet me I post daily DFS lineups for Draft Kings everyday, so please make sure to follow my blog and my Twitter for updates.

P – Kevin Gausman (vs. New York Yankees): $6,900. Gausman was impressive in his first 2 starts in 2016. He will be facing a mediocre, New York Yankees, offense on Thursday.

Due to lack of games on the slate, Gausman’s price is what made him so attractive.

His strikeout potential makes him a decent play on Thursday. This is a bit of a risky pick, but he has showed a lot of promise over his first few starts. He is averaging 16.1 points per game on Draft Kings this season.

P – Jacob deGrom (vs. San Diego Padres): $11,400. deGrom will be facing the worst offensive team in Major League Baseball on Thursday, the San Diego Padres.

He will also be pitching in San Diego’s park, which is known as a pitcher’s park. For those two reasons, he is a must play on Thursday. He is averaging 21.5 points per game on Draft Kings this season.

P – Steven Matz (vs. Atlanta Braves): $9,200. He is facing the 25th overall offense in baseball on Wednesday. His strikeout rate against a mediocre offense should be a great play. The wind will also be blowing towards home plate around 10 MPH, so this should limit and potential long balls against Matz.

P – Felix Hernandez (vs. Oakland A’s): $10,700. he is facing the 24th overall offense in baseball on Wednesday. In 275 career at bats against King Felix, the A’s are hitting .229 with a .264 OBP and only 5 home runs.

Based on his B v. P, I think King Felix is a great play on Monday.

Trey Rose: Daily Fantasy MLB DFS Picks For Draft Kings 5/2/16

Johnny Cueto

Trey Rose (Featured BBBA Fantasy Baseball Writer/Owner – dynastydigest.sportsblog.com)

P- Jon Gray (vs. San Diego Padres): $7,900. This is a pretty risky play on Monday, but many factors point towards Gray having a big game.

Gray struggled in his first two starts this season, but they have been against two very tough teams, the Pirates and Dodgers, and they were played at Coors Field.

Coors Field has not been kind to Gray in his 7 career starts at home. In those starts, he has thrown 29.1 innings, with a 9.20 ERA, 52 hits against, 9 walks, and 29 strikeouts.

In 4 career starts on the road, he has thrown 20 innings, with a 2.70 ERA, 16 hits, 8 walks, and 25 strikeouts. Luckily, Gray will be on the road on Monday.

Not only will he be on the road, but he is pitching at a pitcher’s park in San Diego against a mediocre offense. In his only career start versus the Padres, he threw 5 innings, giving up 2 hits, 2 walks, and 6 strikeouts.

Gray’s impressive career strikeout rate (9.5 strikeouts per 9 innings), success on the road, and favorable matchup all point to a great performance on Monday.

P – Johnny Cueto (vs. Cincinnati Reds): $10,800. This start is going to be an emotional one for Cueto. He will be returning to Cincinnati for the first time since he was traded.

He played 8 years in Cincinnati, so the fans will be behind him and I’m sure he wants to put on a show.

Not only will his emotions play a factor, but he is facing one of the worst offenses in Major League Baseball.

The Reds are ranked as the 28th overall offense, which is clearly a huge advantage for Cueto. In Cueto’s first 5 starts in 2016, he is 4-1, with a 2.65 ERA, 33 strikeouts, and only 5 walks.

In his 98 career starts at Cincinnati’s home stadium, he has a 48-22 record, and a 2.91 ERA.

All signs point to a huge day for Cueto on Monday. He is averaging 25 points per game on Draft Kings this season.

JON LAVENGETTO/MLB.COM

JON LAVENGETTO/MLB.COM

Trey Rose (Featured BBBA Fantasy Baseball Writer/Owner – dynastydigest.sportsblog.com)

Note: There are only 8 games on Thursday, which means the match-ups are very limited. There is also a very good chance of rain for the following games, so pay attention to the forecast: Phillies vs. Nationals, Pirates vs. Rockies, Athletics vs. Tigers.

P – Jon Lester (vs. Milwaukee Brewers): Through 4 starts in 2016, Lester has been absolutely domin

ant. In 27.1 innings pitched, he has a 1.98 ERA, 23 strikeouts, 5 walks, and a 2-1 record. The Brewers’ offense has struggled this season. They are currently ranked as the 25th ranked offense in Major League Baseball.

Lester will be throwing off of his home mound on Thursday as well. All of these factors should work in Lester’s favor.

NOTE: The Chicago Cubs game was postponed on Wednesday night, so Jake Arrieta may take Lester’s spot on Thursday, and if that is the case, Arrieta is a must add.

P – Tanner Roark (vs. Philadelphia Phillies): Roark has been a pleasant surprise for the Washington Nationals this season. In his first 4 starts, he has thrown 24 innings, with a 2.63 ERA, 24 strikeouts, 11 walks, and a 2-2 record.

In his most recent start, he threw 7 innings against the Minnesota Twins, giving up 0 runs, striking out 15, and walking 3. He has a favorable matchup against the Phillies on Thursday, so he is a great start in daily fantasy baseball.

Red Sox 2013 Draft Recap

A look into the Red Sox Draft Room

A look into the Red Sox Draft Room. The Red Sox were aggressive in drafting the best talent they could, and trying to get their bonus pool to lineup in order to sign some of this talent, but how much will they be able to actually sign? Some people also say they might have reached on 1st pick Trey Ball as he was considered by many as more of a middle 1st round talent, but if you believe in a player you have to take him where you are. There is no trading draft picks like in other sports. I think their best pick was Jon Denney, but they really did have a great all-around draft in my opinion.

By Ryan Dana (MLB Reports Writer and Red Sox Correspondent):

The First-Year Player Draft in the MLB (also known as the “Rule 4 Draft”) can make or break organizations. Drafting well will provide sustainability for even the smallest market teams, but drafting poorly could leave any team in a drought of epic proportions.

The Red Sox have had some good and some bad picks in recent drafts, but the 2011 draft was the end of the draft as we previously knew it. 2012 was the 1st year of a new draft system.

So before I get into the 2013 draft I want to talk a little about the Red Sox 2012 draft because not only is that draft over, but the signing period is over and the prospects are all in the Minors developing, so you can see a team’s strategy and how is working out so far.

I won’t get too into the rules of the new system because that could warrant a whole article itself, but feel free to ask any questions about it that you have and I will answer. I’m easy to get a hold of via twitter usually.

The Method To Pirates GM Neal Huntington’s Team Building Strategy

Like us on Facebook here

Tuesday March 12, 2013

Neal Huntington was named General Manager by the Pirates in 2007 and has yet to produce a winning season.

Neal Huntington was named General Manager by the Pirates in 2007 – and has yet to produce a winning season.  Expectations are becoming higher with each passing year.  The Pirates are the only NL Team not to make the playoffs since the 1994 Lockout.

Bernie Olshansky (Baseball Writer):

There is no question that the Pittsburgh Pirates have gone through their fair share of struggles. They have not had a winning season since 1992, and the closest the team has come to a .500 season was last year, when they went 79 – 83. It looks, though, as if there is light at the end of the tunnel for Pirates fans.

General Manager Neal Huntington has made some nice moves to strengthen the team since he was named in 2007.

He immediately went to work, hiring a new manager and making major trades up to the 2008 trading deadline. One of two major trades included sending Xavier Nady to the Yankees for pitchers, notably Jeff Karstens, Ross Ohlendorf, and Outfielder Jose Tabata.

The second major trade was sending Jason Bay to the Red Sox for Brandon Moss, Andy Laroche, and others. Although these deals never really came to fruition, Huntington made it clear that he would not stand idly by and let his team suffer.

Interview with Prospect Jeremy Patton: 2011 Cardinals Draftee

Monday December 12, 2011

Jonathan Hacohen:  We are thrilled to welcome to MLB reports:  2011 St. Louis Cardinals draftee, Jeremy Patton.   A steal of a pick in the 38th round, the 23-year-old Jeremy played this past year for the Batavia Muckdogs (Low-A Ball).   Jeremy played nearly every position for the Muckdogs, except shortstop, catcher and pitcher.  His primary position is second base, which gives him a good chance of shooting up to St. Louis in the next couple of years.  Jeremy showed a very strong bat in his professional debut, which is rare for his position.  I have often preached that the ideal hitter shows the “power and patience” combination.  Jeremy has indeed done that.  In 63 games, he popped 4 home runs, 20 doubles, while walking 30 times to 28 strikeouts.  More walks than strikeouts?  I’m sold!  Jeremy hit .292 last season, with a .374 OBP and .451 SLG.  A great start to his baseball career.  But this is just the tip of the iceberg, as Jeremy begins his journey to St. Louis.

Featured on MLB reports, I proudly present my interview with Jeremy Patton – Prospect and 2011 Draft Pick of the St. Louis Cardinals:

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________

MLB reports:  Welcome to the Reports Jeremy:  First question- Who was your favorite baseball player growing up, that you most idolized and patterned your game after?

Jeremy Patton:  My favorite player growing up was Chipper Jones.

MLB reports:  Which current MLB star do you most admire and why?

Jeremy Patton:  Derek Jeter, because you never hear his name in a negative way.  When you hear his name it is always positive on and off the baseball field. And when his team needs him most, he always comes up with the big hit.

MLB reports:  Reflecting on your career to-date, what are your proudest accomplishments on the baseball field?

Jeremy Patton:  I feel like my greatest accomplishments were winning the 2010 Sun Belt Conference Tournament and being named the Sun Belt Conference Tournament MVP. My proudest accomplishment was being drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals.

MLB reports:  What are your goals going into the 2012 season?

Jeremy Patton:  My goals are to make a long season team after Spring Training, then keep working my way through the minors and making it as high as possible by the end of the season.

MLB reports:  Were you surprised when you were drafted in the 38th round- did you have any expectations on the draft?  What was the process like signing with the Cards?

Jeremy Patton:  Yes, I was surprised when I was drafted.  I was even more surprised that it was by the Cardinals because I am from Missouri and I am a Cardinals fan.  Yes, I was expecting to be drafted sooner than I was, but I was drafted and that is all that matters.  The process was very fast.  They called me on June 8th and told me that I had been drafted and they would call me in a couple of days.  Then a couple of days passed and they called me and told me that they had a flight booked for me to go to Batavia, New York on June 12th to sign my contract.

MLB reports:  What do you consider your greatest baseball skill(s)?

Jeremy Patton:  I have always considered Hitting to be my greatest skill.  I also consider my leadership to be a great skill on the baseball field.

MLB reports:  What facets of your game do you most wish to improve upon?

Jeremy Patton:   I want to keep improving every aspect of my game. I feel that you can never get too good at this game and there is always room for improvement.

MLB reports:  How do strikeouts and walks figure into your game?  Do you see any of these items changing over time and to what degree?  I was very impressed with your 2011 numbers, especially the fact that you had more walks than strikeouts.

Jeremy Patton:  I always try to keep my strikeouts to a minimum.  The less you strikeout, the more you put the ball in play and the higher your on-base percentage. My goal every year is to have more walks than strikeouts and I don’t ever see this goal changing. (Jonathan claps and gives Jeremy a standing ovation)

MLB reports:  Long term- do you see yourself as a second baseman, third baseman, outfielder or at another position? How do you view your role in the organization?

Jeremy Patton:  I see myself as a second baseman, but I am versatile and willing to play whatever position they need me to.  I will know more about what my role is after spring training.

MLB reports:  What do you need to do in order to be successful in this game?

Jeremy Patton:  Stay confident because baseball is a game of confidence and without it you will never be successful. Also, keep putting up exceptional numbers consistently every season.

MLB reports:  If you had to look into a crystal ball, when do you see your expected time of arrival in the big leagues and what do you think you need to do most to get there?

Jeremy Patton:  I see myself in the big leagues in 2014. I need to keep improving my game and produce numbers at every level in the minors.

MLB reports:  Has pro ball been everything you expected it to be thus far?

Jeremy Patton:  Pro ball is everything I have always dreamed it to be.  I am one step closer to my lifelong dream of playing in the big leagues.

MLB reports:  What do you do for fun when you are not playing baseball?

Jeremy Patton:  I like to go hunting, play golf, and spend time with family and friends.

MLB reports:  Do you have a favorite pre-game meal?

Jeremy Patton:  I don’t really have a favorite pre-game meal. I guess it would have to be whatever they put out, which is usually peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

MLB reports:  Final Thoughts?

Jeremy Patton:  Thanks for the interview and maybe we can do a follow-up when I make the big leagues

MLB reports:  Maybe??!!  Count on it!  We would love to have you back on the Reports before then and of course, when you reach St. Louis.  Good luck on the upcoming season Jeremy.

Understanding the New MLB Collective Bargaining Agreement

Friday November 25, 2011

Rob Bland (Baseball Writer – MLB reports):  With the new Collective Bargaining Agreement signed between Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association, comes an opportunity to see where baseball has failed and succeeded.  While many have said that the agreement hurts small market teams or is unfair to teams with bigger scouting departments, I believe it affects all teams in a grand way.  By now, most of you have heard the details of the agreement, so I will only touch upon a few of the main points.

Houston Astros will move to the AL West in 2013. There will be 15 teams per league and interleague games played all year round.

Interleague all year round can be a tricky subject.  Especially if an AL team is playing interleague games in the last week of a playoff race, and their pitcher has to hit.  This may cause a major headache, where teams will want the designated hitter in both leagues.

A second wild card team will be added no later than 2013.

The two wild card teams of each league will play in a one game winner take all sudden death playoff.  This can give a distinct disadvantage to the winning wild card team, as they will only be able to use their ace once in the LDS.

The Elias system of ranking free agents as Type A, Type B or Type C (unranked) will no longer be used to gauge compensation for the teams losing free agents.

The only way a team will receive compensation for losing a free agent is if they make a guaranteed qualifying one year contract equal to the average salary of the top 125 highest paid players.  This is approximately $12.4M for this year.

The minimum salary will rise from $414,000 in 2011 to $480,000 in 2012. It will also rise to $490,000 in 2013 and $500,000 in 2014.

Major League Baseball Amateur Draft Signing Deadline will not be between July 12 and July 18, depending on when the All-Star Game is played.

This pushes the deadline for drafted players to sign up a month.  Seeing as most players wouldn’t sign until the last minutes of the deadline in the past, this will make a huge difference.  Signed players can be assigned to teams and get their professional careers started.  Teams will be able to develop them for longer and put their stamp on them sooner.

Each team will be assigned an aggregate signing bonus pool for their first 10 rounds of the draft.

The number of money available to be spent is dependent upon a team’s standing in the draft and how many picks they possess.  Therefore, if a team picks 1st overall and has 14 picks in the first 10 rounds, they will have more available money to spend than a team that drafts 30th and has only 10 picks.  After the first 10 rounds, teams may only sign players for no more than $100,000.  If a player signs for more than that amount, the excess gets counted against the pool of money for the first 10 rounds.  What this means is that if a player is drafted in the 18th round and signs for $125,000, the extra $25,000 goes against their spending pool.

It is possible to go over this threshold; however MLB has placed very large penalties for doing so.  If a team goes over their allotted pool by 0-5%, a 75% tax is implemented.

  • 5-10% over equals a 75% tax + loss of 1st round draft pick in the following draft
  • 10-15% over equals 100% tax + loss of 1st and 2nd round draft pick in the following draft
  • 15%+ equals 100% tax + loss of 1st round draft pick in the next two drafts

While this seems like it could be a recipe for disaster, the MLB recommended slots will be higher and more realistic than in the past.  The top 10 picks in the draft will have slots of the following:

1 – $7.2M
2 – $6.2M
3 – $5.2M
4 – $4.2M
5 – $3.5M
6 – $3.25M
7 – $3M
8 – $2.9M
9 – $2.8M
10 – $2.7M

This represents approximately 1.5 times the slot from previous years, so the cap will not be as drastic as most would assume.

There will be a new Competitive Balance Lottery to award draft picks to small market and low revenue teams.

The 10 teams in the smallest markets with the lowest revenue will be entered into a lottery for 6 draft picks after the first round, with the teams with the lowest winning percentage the previous year having a higher chance of picking first.

Each club will be given a pool of money to spend on International free agents.

For 2012 and 2013 international free agent signing period, the soft cap will be $2.9M.  After that, teams will be given more or less money dependent on record in the previous year.  There will also be penalties for going over this limit, which are as follows:

  • 0-5% – 75% tax
  • 5-10% – 75% tax and will not be able to spend more than $500,000 on one player
  • 10-15% – 100% tax and will not be able to spend more than $500,000 on one player
  • 15%+ – 100% tax and will not be able to spend more than $250,000 on one player

Players, managers and coaches are prohibited from using smokeless tobacco anytime that fans are permitted into the ballpark.  They also must not be visible in interviews or club interviews.  They may not carry the product on them or in their uniforms.

Most see this as a deterrent for the players from using the products and giving less exposure to impressionable youth.  While this may be true, players will still continue to use smokeless tobacco, they will just keep their wads out of sight.  No more seeing guys like Nick Swisher with his lip stuck out halfway to the pitcher, that’s for sure.

HGH Blood testing will be implemented starting in Spring Training 2012.

There are many arguments for and against this, and I agree with both.  It eases the minds of millions of people that the “Steroid Era” is behind us, yet if testing is done during Spring Training, it gives ample time for someone to get off HGH and resume normal workouts before tested.  Tests will also be administered with reasonable cause throughout the season, and random, unannounced testing could be done as early as next off-season.

New helmets designed by Rawlings will be used by 2013.

These helmets will protect up to speeds of 100mph, as opposed to the helmets used now, which protect a batter up to speeds of 90mph.  Previous versions have been worn by players coming back from concussions such as David Wright, but players disapproved because they were too bulky and uncomfortable.  This version will apparently be much sleeker and more comfortable.

If a player is selected to play in the All-Star Game, he must attend, unless excused by the Office of the Commissioner.

There will be a Social Media Policy in place for all players, coaches and executives.

The policy is being drawn up, and there is a chance that you could see fan favorites on Twitter such as Logan Morrison of the Miami Marlins slightly more censored.  His new manager, Ozzie Guillen, could also see censorship or face penalties.  I think that part of the allure of the game is that players speak their minds.  From Dirk Hayhurst opening up about life in the minor leagues, to Logan Morrison saying what he feels on Twitter, it is something that can bring more youth to the games.  Censoring these players may not be in the best interest of the game, but I will reserve judgment until I find out the exact parameters of the policy.

Instant replay will be expanded.

Replay will be used on plays involving “trapped” catches, as well as fair or foul ball calls.  While everyone loves the human element of the game, and most argue that more instant replay will slow the game down, I am of the ilk that it will speed the game up.  Rather than a manager visiting the umpire to argue a call, yell for five minutes, kick dirt on him and get ejected, the umpire crew can simply go straight to replay, and the play is withheld or upturned in a matter of a minute.

This is basically a very condensed version of the whole CBA, but radical changes are certainly abound in the MLB.  While some are seen as good changes, and some are seen as bad, I am fairly neutral on the matter.  Whereas the MLB achieved close to its goal of having a hard slotting system, the MLBPA also received higher minimum salaries and less restrictions on free agents.  It is a give and take system, and it will take a few years to really see how it affects teams.  Expect teams and agents to find loopholes in the agreement and exploit them to their greatest benefit.

Interview with Shawon Dunston Jr.: Future Cubs Superstar

Sunday November 6, 2011

Jonathan Hacohen:  We are proud to welcome to MLB reports: Shawon Dunston Jr., outfield prospect for the Chicago Cubs.  Shawon was an 11th round pick for the Cubs this past year.  While he was expected to go as high as the 1st round, signability issues centering on his commitment to Vanderbilt allowed him to drop to Chicago.  The Cubs were able to get Dunston Jr. to sign on the dotted line before the signing deadline and just like that, Shawon Dunston Jr. was a Chicago Cub.  Expected to be the team’s center fielder of the future, Chicago is happy to have yet another Dunston in its system. While Dunston Sr. played shortstop for 18 seasons, Dunston Jr. is starting his own career and legacy in professional baseball.  A player with strong tools and reputation in the game, we look forward to watching Shawon Dunston Jr. patrolling the outfield of Wrigley Field in the near future.

Featured on MLB reports, I proudly present my interview with Cubs prospect and 2nd generation Major League Baseball player, Shawon Dunston Jr.:

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________

MLB reports:  Who was your favorite baseball player growing up, that you most idolized and patterned your game after?

Dunston Jr.:  Growing up, I wanted to be just like Ken Griffey Jr. I loved watching him play.  I was also a fan of Barry Bonds

MLB reports:  Which current MLB star do you most admire and why?

Dunston Jr.:  I look up to B.J. Upton.  He makes everything look effortless.  I want to be a Jacoby Ellsbury type player.  Dexter Fowler as well has speed and pop at the CF position.

MLB reports:  Reflecting on your career to-date, what are your proudest accomplishments on the baseball field?

Dunston Jr.:  Playing in the Aflac All-American Baseball Classic during the summer of my junior year.

MLB reports:  Did you fully expect from the start of the draft to sign with the Cubs?  When was the final decision made in the process to sign with Chicago?  Any disappointment with being drafted in the 11th round or did have to do more with your signability status than anything else?

Dunston Jr.:  I was actually surprised they chose me.  I thought three teams were going to get me earlier; I talked to the Cubs’ area guys, but didn’t think they were going to choose me.  I was going to Vanderbilt right up until the last day of the deadline.  It was a tough decision, but my decision came down to the Cubs getting close to my (final dollar) number, getting into the system early and developing now (by playing everyday).  On draft day I was mad and no, I don’t think that I am an 11th round type player.  My bonus I got says it all (got back-end, 1st round money).  My signablity hurt me and also being very committed to Vandy, where I intended to attend.  But that is the past and I am ready to get going.

MLB reports:  When you first found out you were drafted, what were your reactions?  Did those reactions change over time?

Dunston Jr.:  It was more of a relief, like: “Finally- I got drafted!”  I was still upset though that I did not go higher.  Over time my reactions did not change, as looking back I still expected that I should have been drafted higher.  But I use my feelings as a motivator go-forward.

MLB reports:  What do you consider your greatest baseball skill(s)?

Dunston Jr.:  My athleticism.  I am very athletic.

MLB reports:  What facets of your game do you most wish to improve upon?

Dunston Jr.:  All part of my game can be improved.  I am just trying to be a better player overall.

MLB reports:  How do strikeouts and walks figure into your game?  Do you see any of these items changing over time and to what degree?

Dunston Jr.:  Yes, I am going to need to take a better approach at the plate. I am confident that will happen.  I am young and have time to develop.

MLB reports:  Long term what position do you see yourself playing?  How do you see defense as part of your overall game?

Dunston Jr.:  Center field.  That is the position that I am playing now and that will be (the position) I will be playing down the road as well.  I play good defense.

MLB reports:  If you had to look into a crystal ball, when do you see your expected time of arrival in the big leagues and what do you think you need to do most to get there?

Dunston Jr.:  I just need to work hard.  Through development and time, I will get there soon.  I just need some time.

MLB reports:  What are your offseason plans?  Have the Cubs indicated to you at what level you will likely start 2012 and at which position?

Dunston Jr.:  I plan to get bigger, stronger and faster.  I am excited to be getting ready for spring training and my first professional season!

MLB reports:  What do you do for fun when you are not playing baseball?

Dunston Jr.:  I enjoy hanging out with friends and family.

MLB reports:  Have you visited Chicago often in your life?  Any impressions?

Dunston Jr.:  I don’t really remember much from it when my dad played there.  The last time I was there was in the 2003 playoffs at the NLDS with my dad.

MLB reports:  If you could send out a message to the Cubs fans, what would it be?

Dunston Jr.:  I am glad to be a part of this great organization and cannot wait to be playing in Wrigley Field soon!

Thank you again to Shawon Dunston Jr. for taking the time to join us today on MLB reports.  We highly encourage our readers to post at the bottom of the article any questions and/or comments that you may have for Shawon.  As well, please follow Shawon on Twitter (@SDUNSTONJR)

Interview with Robbie Erlin: San Diego Padres Prospect

Monday October 31, 2011

Jeff P (Guest Writer – MLB reports):  I had the pleasure to recently interview one of the top prospects in the game, Robert Erlin of the San Diego Padres.  The 21-year-old Erlin was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 3rd round of the 2009 draft.  After posting incredible numbers in his brief time in the Rangers organization, Erlin was traded in July 2011, with Joe Wieland for reliever Mike Adams.  While Adams was a solid addition to the Rangers bullpen on the road to the World Series, Erlin exploded after the trade.  In 6 starts with San Antonio in AA, Erlin had a 1.38 ERA, 1.154 WHIP and 31/4 SO/BB.  On the fast track with the Padres, Erlin has a good chance of making his major league debut as early as 2012.  Featured on MLB reports, I proudly present my interview with Padres Prospect, Robbie Erlin:

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________

MLB reports:  Hey, Robbie.  First of all, I want to thank you for being with us today, it really is an honor to have you with us.  I’m sure you have a busy schedule so, let’s get this started.  First off:

MLB reports:  You have been outstanding to late, and even became a nominee of MLB.com‘s top 50 prospects, who can you thank for your success?

Robbie Erlin:  I would thank my dad who taught me how to pitch at a young age, Dave Salter, my pitching coach since I was 13 years old, all the coaches in the Texas Rangers organization who I have worked with during my first couple years of pro ball, and the coaches on the San Antonio Missions who I got to work with for a couple of months this season.

MLB reports:  Was it hard to adjust from the Rangers to the Padres?

Robbie Erlin:  It wasn’t too hard to make the adjustment. The Padres and Missions staff let me stick with my routines and throwing program and the players were very helpful with any questions that I had.

MLB reports:  What do you think is unique about the San Diego Padres organization?

Robbie Erlin:  The amount of young talent that they have in both the minor leagues and at the major league level.

MLB reports:  What are your daily rituals, and hobbies off the field?

Robbie Erlin:  I watch the TV show “Las Vegas” everyday before I go to the field. In the offseason I enjoy spending time with my family and visiting my friends who are in college.

MLB reports:  You have been dominating lately. What changes have you made in order to succeed?

Robbie Erlin:  I have really tried to concentrate on hitters’ tendencies and gaining information about offenses so I can apply it in my outings. Also, I have made small adjustments in my delivery so it looks the same on every pitch.

MLB reports:  What were the reactions on you getting drafted, and the after party?

Robbie Erlin:  My family, friends, and I were very excited about getting drafted. I wanted to play baseball after high school and the Rangers provided me with the opportunity.

MLB reports:  Out of your fastball, curveball, and change-up, what would you say is your strongest pitch?

Robbie Erlin:  Fastball.

MLB reports:  Is it safe to say we can see you in MLB in late 2012, or 2013?

Robbie Erlin:  That is a decision for the Padres to make. I am going to focus on pitching and improving as much as I can.

MLB reports:  Who do you look up to in the MLB?

Robbie Erlin:  There is not one specific player. I watch all of them and try to learn from how they play the game.

MLB reports: What kind of music can one find on your iPod?

Robbie Erlin:  Country, Classic Rock, Pop, and Rap.

MLB reports:  What’s your favorite sport besides baseball?

Robbie Erlin:  Football.

MLB reports:  Who was the hardest batter you’ve faced in your professional career?

Robbie Erlin:  Cody Hinze from Houston has always been a tough out for me.

MLB reports:  Let’s end it off here: If you weren’t a baseball player, where would you see yourself today?

Robbie Erlin:  I would be in college working towards a degree.

MLB reports:  Thank you very much for taking your time out of your busy schedule so we can have you with us. Much appreciated!

Robbie Erlin:  No problem. Thank you very much for the interview!

Thank you again to Robbie Erlin for taking the time to join us today on MLB reports.  We highly encourage our readers to post at the bottom of the article any questions and/or comments that you may have for Robbie.  As well, please follow Robbie on Twitter (@RobbieErlin11)

Interview with Christian Friedrich: Colorado Rockies Prospect

Friday October 14, 2011

Jeff P (Guest Writer – MLB reports):  Recently I had the honor of interviewing Christian Friedrich, top MLB pitching prospect.   Speaking to Friedrich, I had the sense that he has the same key goal as many other baseball players:  working hard to achieve his dream.  Friedrich is a great guy and it was a pleasure interviewing him.

Firstly, I would like to relay some information on Chris, courtesy of Wikipedia:

“Christ Louis Friedrich (July 8, 1987 in Evanston, Illinois) is a left-handed starting pitcher in the Colorado Rockies organization. He currently plays for the Class AA Tulsa Drillers. He was drafted in the first round (25th overall) in the 2008 Amateur Draft out of Eastern Kentucky University.”

Considering that he was a prestigious first round selection, Chris is one of the most interesting guys you will ever meet in baseball.  Chris has tremendous talent, to go along with his strong reputation in the game.  Featured on MLB reports, I proudly present my interview with Rockies Prospect, Chris Friedrich:

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________

MLB reports:  Welcome to MLB reports, Chris.  I am starting you off with a tough question:  you have struggled throughout your time in double-A ball.  What do you feel has been the most difficult part of moving from A+ to AA?

Friedrich:  The hardest part about AA is being consistent.  At the lower levels you can still get by on some of your bad days. In AA you have to be in it every day.  The days you’re not pitching are just as important as the 5th day.  Your routine has to be perfect and the same, your mental and physical preparation can’t skip a beat.  All those things sum up in my mind to confidence.  If you forget a certain lift, change your running routine, mental prep, or even your warm up before the game, it leaves doubt in your mind that doesn’t need to be lingering with you when you toe the rubber.

MLB reports:  A few months ago, did you worry about the trade speculation around the clubhouse that you might be traded?

Friedrich:  When the trade deadline comes around every year, you can’t help to listen in on what some of the guys or reporters are saying.  For the most part though it’s something I can’t control and would deal with it if it happened.  In all honesty though I didn’t and don’t think there’s a whole lot of teams looking for a guy like me after the season I put up and no one is more disappointed with that than myself.  I had a good three months but couldn’t put it all together.  I understand what I have to do, and that’s why this offseason is so important.  There was a bit of a smile when that time passes because I love being a Rockie.

MLB reports:  Daily rituals and hobbies, outside of the clubhouse?

Friedrich:  For daily rituals as of now it’s a wonderful routine.  Wake up and breakfast might be my favorite part of the day.  Two eggs, two sausages, two toasts, and my beloved coffee from the Keurig.  I’ll get my workout done in the mornings and then go for a swim.  After that I usually go on the course or the range.  I’m really roughing it (ha ha).  It’s nice to be in one place for and extended period of time and develop the consistent routines.  In the evening my other favorite hobby as many around me know is video games.  I turned a closet into a video gamer’s paradise.  My favorite part about video games is playing competitive games online with friends.  It allows me to connect with buddies from back home, college teammates, guys I’ve played against, and even guys in our organization.  It’s a lot easier than just sitting talking on the phone.  I get to catch up with them and involve teamwork.  I’m really excited for Modern Warfare 3 to come out.

MLB reports:  What kind of music can one find on your iPod?

Friedrich:  I have all genres of music on my apple products.  My favorite would definitely be rock and roll.  Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Steely Dan, Doobie Brothers, Grand Funk Railroad, and a lot of Fall out Boy.  Home town band I really like.  No Beatles!

MLB reports:  You have suffered from injuries during your career.  What effects did your health have on your baseball activities?

Friedrich:  Injuries have plagued me through my career but I’m thankful they weren’t and major ones.  You learn to deal with them and do everything you can to prevent them.  When they first happen it’s hard to accept and deal with them. It’s a great way to train yourself mentally but that’s my only positive.  All you can do is work your behind off to get back out there and help out the club.  The past three years I’ve dealt with some tendonitis in my elbow.  It’s a nagging injury that doesn’t sit you down always but prohibits you from keep up your routine.  For example it doesn’t bother you much the day you pitch because you are usually amped up.  But on those important days in-between, it makes it harder to work on the things you normally do. Certain lifts bother it, and most of all, certain pitches.  I noticed this year my breaking pitches during that time weren’t as sharp and I was getting ahead, but not putting guys away.  This comes from not practicing with them as much through your five-day routine.  Now I have time to strengthen my body and smaller muscle groups to make sure I can prevent these (injuries) as much as possible.

MLB reports:  Do you think we will see you in the big leagues sometime next year?

Friedrich:  I’m hoping to shock some people come spring training and reach the expectations I’ve set for myself.  I’m doing everything I can to get there but that’s not under my control.  But I will try to make the decision very easy for them.

MLB reports:   What do you think is unique about the Rockies organization?

Friedrich:  The Rockies organization is unlike any other.  Our staff is made up of the best around with great knowledge and experience.  I feel like we’re taken in, like it’s a family.  This is a very classy organization the prides itself on homegrown talent.  I couldn’t be happier with where I’m at.  From my experience, players who have left our organization and players that come to it, say it’s the best they’ve been a part of.

MLB reports:  What was the worst moment of your baseball career thus far?

Friedrich:  The worst moment of my career would probably be the collapse at the end of my season this year.  Last year our big league club lost a lot of starting pitching to injuries and Ubaldo Jimenez to the trade.  It would have been a prime opportunity for me to shine and I went in the opposite direction.  I’m looking to fix that.

MLB reports:  What are you planning to work on in the offseason to improve your pitching status?

Friedrich:  This offseason is again all about my routine and keeping good habits.  I took about a week off and got straight to work.  I’m using dry work everyday to solidify my mechanics so come February it’s an after thought.  I’m incorporating swimming into my workouts to strengthen my shoulders and lats.  I have dropped the bad weight and adding the good weight.  My eating routine is helping with my energy and muscle-building.  I am currently living in Florida by myself, so I don’t have distractions and have loved every minute of it.  I started just a month ago and can’t wait come February.

MLB reports:  You were drafted 25th, in the 2008 draft.  What was the after party and the phone call like?

Friedrich:  The draft day was a day I’ll never forget.  I was blessed to have friends and family there to celebrate with me.  It was hard to think while talking to reporters and answer questions, when I was still trying to wrap my head around it!

MLB reports:  Who do you look up to in the big leagues?

Friedrich:  I look up to a lot of our own players even at some of our levels. What I’m most impressed with, with majority of the big leaguers I have been around is their work ethic.  Guys like Tulo, Helton,  Blackmon, Belisle and EY all are workhorses in their own way. And there isn’t one way they all go about doing things.  They have all learned for themselves what works best for them.  They each have become machines of routine and excellence.  My favorite pitcher by far though, like many others is Cliff Lee.  He masters the strike zone and his command for all of his pitches is superb.  My favorite thing is to watch his sequences and see how he sets up all his opponents.  You watch highlights and can’t believe guys miss a pitch, but it’s how he has set them up.

MLB reports:  I’ll end off here, if you were not currently a baseball player, what do you think you would be doing right now?

Friedrich:  If I wasn’t in baseball?  Tough one.  If I never played in college, I would have like to go into dentistry or design.  Since I am in baseball, I can’t get out.  I love it.  I would stay in the game whether it would be coaching or scouting.

MLB reports:  Thank you very much for taking your time out of your busy schedule so we can have you with us.  Much appreciated!
