Colin Rea Traded Back To The Padres After One Start With The Marlins
Colin Rea and Andrew Cashner were acquired by the Miami Marlins on July 29th from the San Diego Padres. The Marlins sent top prospect, Josh Naylor, and multiple other prospects to the Padres in return. Unfortunately, it looks like Rea’s time in Miami has been cut short after an arm injury suffered in his first start. Little did we all know, but there was a return policy also included in the original trade.

Los Angeles Dodgers Acquire Rich Hill and Josh Reddick From The Oakland A’s
It’s the most wonderful time of the year!! The trade deadline will end at 4 PM EST today, so that means we will see plenty of trades in baseball. The first big trade of the day includes the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Oakland A’s. The Dodgers will acquire starting pitcher, Rich Hill, and outfielder, Josh Reddick. Considering the Dodgers are only two games out of first place in the National League West, this is a huge move to win now. Both players are rentals since their contracts are up at the conclusion of the season.

Cincinnati Reds Have A Trade Partner For Jay Bruce, But Who Is It?
The trade deadline is quickly approaching, but Jay Bruce is still on the Cincinnati Reds, which is a surprise to many baseball fans. Many teams have expressed interest in the Reds’ outfielder, so it is expected that there will be a trade within the next few hours. It was reported this morning that the Reds have a deal in place with a National League organization, but who could it be?
As of right now, it is rumored that the New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers, and San Francisco Giants have the best chance at landing the Reds’ outfielder. All of those teams could drastically improve their lineup with the addition of Bruce. In 2016, Bruce is currently batting .265, with 25 home runs, 80 RBIs, 60 runs, .316 OBP, and a .559 slugging percentage. His impressive season led to his third all-star appearance in nine years.

Daily Fantasy MLB DFS Picks For DraftKings 8/1/16
P – Stephen Strasburg (vs. Arizona Diamondbacks): $12,900. With such a small slate today, Strasburg is easily the best option at pitcher. He is averaging 10.93 strikeouts per nine innings this year, which is huge for daily fantasy. The Diamondbacks offense has struggled over the past seven days, so hopefully Strasburg can take advantage.
P – CC Sabathia (vs. New York Mets): $7,600. In 116 career at bats against Sabathia, the New York Mets are only batting .216, with a .248 OBP, and 35 strikeouts. In his last outing, he was pretty impressive against a very tough Astros lineup, so the Mets should be a cake walk.

Which Team Will Sign Ian Desmond To A $100 Million Contract This Offseason?
After turning down a seven year/$107 million contract from the Washington Nationals two years ago, people thought Ian Desmond made a huge mistake. The following year, his contract year, Desmond folded under pressure. He hit .233, with 19 home runs, 62 RBIs, 69 runs, 13 stolen bases, and a .290 OBP. After that tough year, that $107 million contract extension that Desmond declined looked like a very bad decision.
Following Desmond’s tough 2015 campaign, the Texas Rangers decided to take a chance on the shortstop and sign him to a one-year, $8-million-dollar deal. The Rangers already had a starting shortstop, so they moved the former all-star to the outfield. While many people thought Desmond’s career was doomed, he is proving everyone wrong in 2016. If he continues at this pace, he could be looking at another $100 million contract offer.

Neil Walker was a double shy of the cycle, driving in 4 runs and scoring 2 more to give the Mets a much needed 6-4 victory over Colorado.
Carl Edwards Jr. came out of the bullpen, struck out 5 of the 6 batters he faced and stopped the bleeding as the Cubs fell into a deep early hole against Seattle. He did not fare in the decision, but his relief help set up Chicago’s comeback and their walk off 7-6 win in the 12th.
Miguel Cabrera went 3 for 4 with 2 homers, 3 runs scored and 4 RBI to help the Tigers finish the sweep of Houston, 11-0.
Corey Kluber threw 7 shutout innings, striking out 7 A’s and allowing just 5 hits as the Indians won again, 8-0.

Well here we are, the dog days of summer are upon us as we hit the first of August. We are greeted with a so-so 8 game slate and had amazing success yesterday, so let’s continue that today!
Daily Matchups for 8/1/2016
Pitcher
STUD
Stephen Strasburg– Stras comes into this matchup having a dominating season so far. He’s pitched 127 innings allowing only 90 hits while striking out 155 and walking only 36. He is sporting a 2.68 ERA with 14 wins. He draws a great matchup against the Diamondbacks who he has been able to hold to a .230 BA (14 for 61) while giving up only 1 HR to the current roster. He’s averaging 47.47 FP this season and coming off of a great performance against a good Indians’ team where he pitched 7 innings, allowing only 3 hits, 2 walks, 7 Ks picking up the win and 54 FP. We are looking for another 50+ FP outing from him tonight.
Kyle Hendricks– If you asked me at the beginning of the season if I would ever put Hendricks into the stud category I would most likely just laugh in your face. But here we are, Hendricks coming into Monday’s matchup with 9 wins, 116 IPs, allowing 91 hits, 32 walks, striking out 103 and a 2.39 ERA. He had a down game his last one against the White Sox where he pitched 5.2 innings, allowing 6 hits, 2 walks, 7 Ks and only 29 FP. Tonight he draws a great matchup against the Marlins who he has held to a .207 BA (12 for 58) with a 19.7 K%, 10.6 B%, and striking out 13 Marlins’ bats. He has given up 10 singles, inducing 19 groundouts, 7 flyouts, 6 walks and 3 pop outs. He hasn’t given up a HR to this current Miami roster and he comes in as a great option if you don’t want to pay up for
MID RANGE
VALUE
CC Sabathia – Why do I like him? Well, the Mets struggle against lefties and he has held them to a .222 BA (26 for 117) in his lifetime. Their most feared hitter (besides the oft-injured Cespedes) is the switch-hitting Asdrubal Cabrera and he left with a left knee injury on Sunday. CC is coming off a terrific game against Houston where he pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing only 4 hits, 2 walks, striking out 5, picking up the W and 41 FP on FanDuel. He’s more of a tournament option but he’s got a 27.6 K%, 4.1 B%, while striking out 34 current Mets, inducing 29 groundouts, 15 flyouts, and only allowing 21 singles. Can’t trust CC in cash games on this small slate, but love him for a tourney or two.

Noah Syndergaard- Absolutely love Thor in this matchup against the Rockies as the spacious Citi Field. Syndergaard has held Colorado to a .200 BA (4 for 20) with a 13.6 K%, 9.1 B%. This includes 5 flyouts, 3 groundouts, 3 popouts, 3 strikeouts, 2 walks and 2 HRs. He’s averaging 39.80 FanDuel FP this season and Is coming off of a 6 IP, 7 hits, 3 walks, 8 Ks, 2.45 ERA, and 36 FP his last start against the Cardinals.
Corey Kluber- He’s our next stud of the day. He’s facing an Oakland team that he has been able to handle all of his career. Kluber has allowed only a .231 BA (15 for 65) with a 22.2 K%, 6.9 B% including 18 groundouts, 16 strikeouts, 11 flyouts, 10 singles, 5 walks, 2 Hrs. Kluber himself is averaging 38.70 FanDuel FP this season and draws a great matchup. He’s only had 2 down games in his lasat 10 and is coming off of a great game against the Orioles’ power bats where we saw Kluber pitch 7 innings, allowing 6 hits, 1 walk, 8 strikeouts and 36 FP. I could see him go for 40+ FP today.
MID RANGE
Jerad Eickhoff- He is going up against the Braves which is a dream for most pitchers this season. Eickhoff has allowed only a .200 BA (14 for 70) with a 20.5 K% anda 7.7 B%. He’s struck out 16 batters with 16 flyouts, 12 groundouts, allowing only 2 HRs. He’s averaging 29.71 FanDuel FP. Eickhoff had a tremendous game his last start where he pitched against Miami for 7 innings, allowing only 5 hits, 1 walk, striking out 8 and getting 42 FP. We think he will be under 10% owned and should be in store for a great game.
Steven Wright- You have to make sure the humidity and weather is just Wright (get it?!) because he’s absolutely terrible when it’s too humid or wet out. Normally we don’t like targeting pitchers against Angels’ bats as they just don’t strike out enough, but a knuckleball pitcher is a whole different ballgame. Wright has held LAA to a .238 BA (10 for 42) with a 14.6 K%, and a 10.4 B%. He’s struck out 7 while getting 9 groundouts, 7 flyouts, and walking 5. He’s more of a tournament option as well considering he is coming off an absolutely terrible performance against Detroit this week where he gave up 9 hits, 3 walks, only punching out 2 and getting -4 FanDuel FP.
VALUE
Carlos Rodon- Now this is more of a GPP flyer as Rodon is coming off the DL with a wrist injury. He draws a great matchup against the Twins who he has faced a few times as they are both in the AL Central division. Rodon has held the Twins’ bats to a .218 BA (12 for 55) with a 22.1 K%, 14.7 B%. He’s struck out 15 batters while also getting 12 groundouts, 9 flyouts, 9 walks, and 3 HRs. Rodon hasn’t pitched since July 5th where he allowed 12 hits in 5 innings to the Yankees. You can’t trust him in cash today, but use him in a small $1 or $2 tourney.
Francisco Liriano- Absolutely love Liriano as a sleeper pick today that people will be off of. Liriano is coming off an absolute nightmare of a matchup against the Mariners where he only lasted 3.1 innings, giving up 8 hits, walking 4, and getting -2 FP. The matchup before that he faced this exact Milwaukee team he is facing today. In that matchup on July 21st he pitched 6.2 innings striking out 13 and getting the win with 65 FP. Lifetime against the Brewers Liriano has held them to a .239 BA (22 for 92), striking out 28 and keeping up a 26.4 K%. Look for him to go under-owned and could prove to be a great asset on a slate like today.

Daily Fantasy MLB DFS Picks For DraftKings 7/30/16
P – Anthony DeSclafani (vs. San Diego Padres): $9,400. DeSclafani has been incredibly reliable this season when he is healthy. He is 6-0 on the year, with a 3.09 ERA, and 46 strikeouts in 55.1 innings pitched.
He is pitching in San Diego’s home stadium, which is a much better pitcher’s park than what DeSclafani is used to in Cincinnati. If this righty continues to pitch like he has over the last two months, the Padres’ offense shouldn’t pose a problem on Saturday..
P – Jeremy Hellickson (vs. Atlanta Braves): $8,900. Now is Hellickson’s time to shine if he wants to get dealt to a competing team. Over his last seven starts, he has a 2.20 ERA, which is obviously very appealing to teams looking to acquire pitching around the trade deadline.
He will be facing one of the worst offenses in baseball, so this should be a great matchup for the righty.

What would a Nationals trade for Mark Melancon look like?
The Pittsburgh Pirates historically move closers at the right time. Is history about to repeat itself?
Today, Ken Rosenthal reported that the Pittsburgh Pirates have been in talks with teams regarding Mark Melancon.
With the Washington Nationals specifically named, how do the Pirates line up as trade partners with the franchise formerly known as the Expos?
Before we can delve into that, we should note that the Nationals were in on Aroldis Chapman. As Jon Heyman reported:
The Nats declined to give up Lucas Giolito for Chapman, then they declined to give up Joe Ross. After those two attempts by the Yankees, New York is said to have requested a four-player package centered around young pitching. Anyway, the Nats didn’t do it and never got close
First, let’s be very clear. In the closer market, there is Chapman, and then there is everyone else. We can use logic to tell us that the Nats will not give up Lucas Giolito – the consensus top pitching prospect in baseball entering 2015 – in any type of 1-for-1 deal. Thus, any deal that includes Giolito and Player X or Prospect Y likely will not work either.
Joe Ross is interesting as he can be seen as somewhat expendable. He’s been a very solid performer, with an ERA in the mid 3.5 or lower range with low-enough walk and home run per nine rates. This year he is averaging about 7.5 K/9. He is controllable through 2022, and is pre-arbitration.
Despite all these accolades, the Nationals are set at the top of their rotation with Stephen Strasburg, Max Scherzer and Giolito. Tanner Roark is in tow and controllable through 2020. Gio Gonzalez has a team option for the next two years, but the club might want to clear space for Erick Fedde, another talented starting pitching prospect.
Putting Together the Package
Taking all of that into consideration, and it would appear that Ross or Roark would be imminently available. Roark might have a slight edge over Ross in esteem due to a slightly longer track record and having slightly better control.
It is easy to envision a 1-for-1 swap of either Ross or Roark for Melancon’s services. We have seen a plethora of “baseball trades” in recent years, afterall.
But, as is often the case, trade deadline deals are rarely that easy. If we expand our criteria to see how the team’s farm systems match up, there is a lot of similarity. The Nationals have an abundance of infielders with multiple position chops as well as the usual assortment of pitching. Much like the Pittsburgh Pirates, their pipeline is surprisingly well-stocked for a team that traditionally has been built through free agency.
I could easily see a swap of B-level prospects being included in a potential deal, or a prospect going to the Pirates as a throw-in. Regardless, any deal with the Nationals would have to involve either Roark or Ross. Both are young, controllable and capable.
With just over 72 hours left until the deadline, the club might just be able to find a better deal elsewhere, but it’s clear that the Pittsburgh Pirates and Washington Nationals line up well as trade partners.

Chris Archer’s Very Good, Straight Fastball
The Tampa Bay Rays have reportedly been shopping their starting pitching, a move that I called for back in May. The Rays have more than enough pitching, but lack the position players to compete in the very difficult AL East. Their team just doesn’t quite all fit together. I guess that’s what happens when you’re poor and are constantly collecting items that other people have seemingly failed to value properly.
Think about it: does a homeless man ever seem to have a full wardrobe or ensemble? No, his shiny new shoes might look fly, but they’ll be paired with socks that have seen better days. The Rays have always had Evan Longoria as their shiny new shoes, and they seem to constantly pair that with a supa-fly button-down shirt of a rotation, but lack the run-scoring pant’s, socks, and underwear necessary to support it. That the approach has led to a last place standing here in 2016.
With news that they’re shopping Archer, it would appear that their thinking evolving: they’re trying to swap that swanky button-down for a nice T-shirt, and set themselves up with a decent pair of pants that will score some runs. It makes sense to me (and I hope you followed that analogy).
Analogies aside, the bigger issue Chris Archer, his 2016 season, and what he might command on the market.
Archer currently sports a 4.42 ERA and leads the league in losses. That’s the type of guy who wouldn’t fetch much in return. But those two basic stats fail to highlight Archer’s overall package. The guy currently leads the league in strikeouts, with 155 in 130 innings. He’s 27 now, and coming off of a 5th place Cy Young performance last year. He’s signed through 2021 on a very reasonable contract, and is still chucking his fastball in there at an average of 94.1 mph.
When the rumors cropped up that Archer was being shopped, plenty of teams started doing their homework. They were, and likely still are, trying to determine if he’s the pitcher that had the baseball world abuzz last year, or if he’s like a really nice and likable AJ Burnett. Let’s do our homework along with those other teams.
The first thing to understand about Archer is that he’s simply been wildly inconsistent. Below are his single game ERA’s for the season (thanks Fangraphs!). You’ll notice that good performances are followed by bad ones, or vice versa. He’s been all over the place. That’s way more frustrating for fans, Archer, and evaluators than if he were simply good/bad.
OK, we’ve established that he’s been inconsistent, but I really wanted to find out why. I went to Statcast and started playing around, looking for anything that could help explain these fluctuations. I looked at all kinds of stuff: Velocity differences, straight velocity, perceived velocity, spin rate, spin rate differences across pitches, pitch selection. None of them correlated very well with Archer’s Game Scores. I used game scores, because that combines his ERA with other predictors of success, like walks, strikeouts, and hits allowed into a single metric.

Which Relief Pitcher Will The Washington Nationals Acquire At The Trade Deadline?
The Washington Nationals are currently in first place in the National League East, but they are in desperate need of some help in their bullpen. Their current closer, Jonathan Papelbon, has struggled all season long, which has cost the Nationals multiple games. He currently has a 4.18 ERA, 19 saves, and three blown saves in 34 appearances. Daily Fantasy MLB DFS Picks For DraftKings 7/29/16
P – Collin McHugh (vs. Detroit Tigers): $8,600. McHugh struggled to start the season, but he has been very reliable in the month of July. In four starts this months, he has a 2.66 ERA and 28 strikeouts. He is pitching in a pitcher favorable ballpark as well, which is also to his favor. Over his last four starts, he is averaging 20.5 points on DraftKings. There is a chance of rain at the start of this game, so keep an eye on the weather forecast.
P – Ivan Nova (vs. Tampa Bay Rays): $8,300. Over his last four starts, Nova has been a great option for daily fantasy. He is averaging 19.9 points on DraftKings in that timespan. Tampa Bays’ offense has been brutal all season, specifically over the last seven days, so this should be a great matchup for Nova.
