Milwaukee Brewers Week in Review: April 11-17
I’m a touch late this week due to travel to see family over Easter weekend. But the Brew Crew had a big week, and I certainly don’t want to skip a week of Brewers Week in Review.
The week in review: The Milwaukee Brewers had a hot week on their nine game road trip. They knocked off Toronto in a two game series (4-3 and 2-0). They won three out of four in Cincinnati over the weekend (wins 5-1, 10-4, 4-2; loss 4-2). Last night they beat the Cubs 6-3 to start a three game series in Chicago. Heading into Tuesday’s action, Milwaukee is 8-6 in the NL Central, .5 behind the Reds.

Daily Matchups for 4/18/2017
Pitchers To Target:

Michael Fulmer- Love this match-up for Fulmer tonight. He gets a terrific game against the Rays that he has had some success against in the past. Tonight is kind of like Sunday’s slate, not many stud pitchers going and the terrible match-ups will be exploited by our batting picks.
Career vs Current Rays Roster
AVG: 0.138 [4 for 29], BABIP: 0.176, K%: 37.9, BB%: 0.0
FIP: 2.09 Strikeout: 11 Groundout: 8 Flyout: 5Single: 2 Home Run: 1 Double: 1 Pop Out: 1

Yuuuuuuuuuu Darvish- Love this match-up against the A’s tonight. Both of these teams being in the same division see each other a ton which gives Darvish’s numbers more exciting as he’s held them to a .200 BA in 110 ABs. He’s coming off of a 10 K outing against the Angels and could see something along those lines in tonight’s match-up.
Career vs Current Athletics Roster
AVG: 0.200 [22 for 110], BABIP: 0.284, K%: 28.6, BB%: 10.3
FIP: 2.51 Strikeout: 36 Flyout: 23 Single: 17Groundout: 16 Walk: 13 Lineout: 7 Double: 4Pop Out: 3 Hit By Pitch: 2 Home Run: 1 Sac Fly:1 Grounded Into DP: 1 Field Error: 1 Double Play: 1

Matt Cain- 100% GPP only play here. I can’t even believe I’m suggesting him. Cain is in a match-up tonight against a reeling Royal’s team that just can’t string much together to start the 2017 campaign. Cain has actually had tremendous success against the current roster and could make for a great SP2. He’s had mixed results in his two starts and hasn’t gone over 5 innings yet so that could deter people from choosing him.
Career vs Current Royals Roster
AVG: 0.081 [3 for 37], BABIP: 0.087, K%: 41.5, BB%: 0.0
FIP: 1.31 Strikeout: 17 Groundout: 6 Flyout: 6Sac Bunt: 4 Pop Out: 3 Single: 2 Home Run: 1Bunt Groundout: 1 Lineout: 1

A. J. Griffin allowed 1 hit and no runs while striking out 8 Oakland batters, earning the 7-0 decision for the Rangers.

Justin Verlander Takes To Twitter With Typical JV Response To Pitch Tipping
I have to say, Justin Verlander‘s social media game is strong and he proves it once again with this response to his tipping pitches.
Verlander was hit hard on Saturday in his start against the Cleveland Indians, as he gave up 9 earned runs, tying a career high, which included 3 home runs in just four innings of work. The response from both James McCann and Brad Ausmus, was that JV could have been tipping his pitches without knowing it.
As you can see, he’s very concerned with effort!

Mookie Betts and Byron Buxton Are on Opposite Ends of the Strikeout Spectrum
Since the 2017 MLB regular season is only a couple weeks old, we still can’t draw concrete conclusions based on player performance just yet. There are definitely certain trends we should be taking note of, though.
After all, don’t tell anyone associated with the Toronto Blue Jays that the first couple weeks can just be shrugged off as no big deal.
Two player trends that have been eye opening for different reasons involve Mookie Betts of the Boston Red Sox and Byron Buxton of the Minnesota Twins. One barely strikes out, but it seems like that’s all the other one does these days.
Prospects of the Weekend: Kyle Tucker Knocks In 7 Runs
The Astros’ farm system flaunted it’s muscles this weekend as top prospects Francis Martes and Kyle Tucker both showed what they are capable of and why they are so highly thought of. There were many solid pitching performances over the weekend, a few by top prospects Josh Hader, Enyel De Los Santos, and Walker Buehler.
Top Prospects
Kyle Tucker
2 doubles- 7 runs batted in- 1 home run
Kyle Tucker, the Astro’s number 2 prospect in the system, had himself a day on Saturday at High-A Buies Creek. Tucker racked up 7 RBIs in the game, all coming in the first three innings. Tucker doubled in his first at-bat, driving in one run. Tucker had his next at-bat in the 2nd inning, this time with bases loaded, and Tucker delivered. He hit a bases-clearing double to center field, racking up 3 more ribeyes. He would get his third at-bat in three innings, hitting a three-run home run to right center. Tucker would another hit to his tally later in the 7th inning, marking a 4-5 day at the plate.
Tucker, the brother of Astros’ Preston Tucker, is 19 years of age and is impressing at High-A thus far, slashing .343/.395/.714 for the Buies Creek Astros. If he continues raking at this rate it won’t be long until he is called up to Double-A. Tucker has a very advanced approach at the plate and is one of the best hitters in the Astros’ farm. Astros fans have a lot to be excited for in this kid.
Ranking Yankees! Who is the Second-Greatest of Them All?

ESPN.com is currently running a poll that asks, “Who is the greatest Yankee in history after Babe Ruth?“
It’s not a question that would hold any interest for the late George Steinbrenner, who once quipped: “Second place is really first loser.” But we baseball fans are suckers for rankings, so rankings shall commence.
Respondents to the poll are asked to choose among some of the usual suspects, presented here in alphabetical order: Berra, DiMaggio, Gehrig, Jeter, Mantle and Rivera. I think it’s pretty clear, even to the most die-hard Mariana Rivera supporter (and really, who among us isn’t a Mariano Rivera supporter?), that the reliever doesn’t belong in this company… READ THE FULL STORY ON PLATE COVERAGE

Daily Matchups for 4/17/2017
Pitchers To Target:

Jordan Montgomery- With no actual stud pitching in today’s slate, it’s going to be a day with value pitching everywhere. Obviously Montgomery hasn’t faced this White Sox team due to the fact that he just made his ML debut 5 days ago and we loved him then and he didn’t disappoint. In his debut against the Rays he only pitched 4.2 innings (5 H, 2 BB, 7 SO, 2 ER and 29 FP on Fanduel.) If he’s given more than 4.2 innings he could be in store for 40+ output.

Ivan Nova- It’s true that we suggested him last time out against Cincy and he pitched 6 innings and gave up 8 hits, with only 1 K and 16 FP. Not sure what happened there but his first start against ATL he ended up with 40 FP. Absolutely think his match-up tonight against the lackluster Cardinals will be more like his ATL start and a lot less like his Cincy start. He’s capable of striking out 6+, hell that’s what CC did on Saturday and Nova is more consistent/potent than Sabathia now a days anyways. He obviously hasn’t seen much of the Cardinals’ bats since he was with the Yankees his whole career up until last trade deadline but he should fair well tonight.
Career vs Current Cardinals Roster

The Boston Red Sox and 2018 MLB Free Agents
The 2017 Major League Baseball season has just kicked off but it’s never too early to look ahead to next year. There is an interesting crop of potential free agents, and the Boston Red Sox, who are annual players in the market, may look to go shopping once again. Let’s take a look at what players might be good fits.
Baltimore Orioles Top 25 Prospects of 2017
It has become general consensus that the Orioles offer one of the worst farm systems in baseball. Various rankings have them placed in the bottom five organizations across the sport. A handful of recent selections have already risen through the rankings as Cody Sedlock (2016 1st round), Ryan Mountcastle (2015 1st round), and Keegan Akin (2016 2nd round) are all in our top ten. Given the offensive success of the team, Baltimore’s focus has turned to developing pitching as these rankings are 60% pitching prospects. Despite regular drafting of young arms, 4 of the 7 best prospects are positional. Chance Sisco is the leading name in the organization with impressive offensive prowess for a catcher. While other organizations are able to offer potential stars like Victor Robles, Austin Meadows, and Francisco Mejia; Baltimore lacks any excitement from top to bottom.
Fans can expect to see a handful of young players work their way to the 25-man roster by season’s end. Trey Mancini began the year at the Major League level with positive results. Jason Garcia may see a return after a full season in Bowie and Gabriel Ynoa brings in exposure with the Mets. The majority of prospects remain a few years off, but the Orioles at least have an exciting enough top level squad to keep the focus away from their desperate farm system.

Ervin Santana threw a complete game 1 hit shutout, striking out 8 White Sox and earned the 6-0 decision for the Twins.
Tyler Chatwood took a perfect game into the 6th and finished with a complete game 2 hitter as the Rockies blanked San Francisco, 5-0.
Jose Ramirez collected 10 total bases including a pair of homers and 6 RBI as a match up of aces turned into a 13-6 slugfest win for the Indians over Detroit.
Nolan Arenado went 3 for 5 with a homer to help Colorado beat San Francisco, 5-0.

Daily Matchups for 4/16/2017
Top Pitchers
Jon Lester- If you can take a pitcher on the Cubs, 9 times out of 10 you’ll be looking at an extra 12 points for the W over at Fanduel. He’s had 2 really good starts this season against both the Dodgers and Cardinals where he scored 40 and 33 FPs. Love his match-up against the Pirates today.
Career vs Current Pirates Roster
AVG: 0.279 [41 for 147], BABIP: 0.339, K%: 21.2, BB%: 6.7
FIP: 3.26 Strikeout: 35 Single: 31 Groundout: 31Flyout: 18 Walk: 11 Lineout: 8 Pop Out: 7Double: 6 Hit By Pitch: 4 Home Run: 3 Sac Bunt:3 Grounded Into DP: 3 Bunt Lineout: 1Forceout: 1 Triple: 1 Double Play: 1 Field Error:1

Cole Hamels- Absolutely love Hamels in this match-up considering the Mariner have been absolutely terrible to start the season. Hamels has had success against them in the past and looks to continue to build on his last start against the Angels where he pitched 7 innings giving up only 4 hits, walking 4, striking out 5 allowing 1 ER and getting the QSTART and 37 FP on Fanduel.
Career vs Current Mariners Roster
AVG: 0.257 [29 for 113], BABIP: 0.268, K%: 21.3, BB%: 8.7
FIP: 5.70 Strikeout: 27 Single: 21 Groundout: 18Flyout: 18 Walk: 11 Home Run: 7 Pop Out: 6Lineout: 6 Sac Bunt: 3 Forceout: 3 Grounded Into DP: 3 Field Error: 2 Double Play: 1 Double: 1

Gio Gonzalez- Love this match-up against the Phillies for Gio today. He has back to back great starts against STL (7 IP, 6 H, 0 BB, 6 SO, 1 ER, 1 QSTART, 1 W and 46 FP) and against Miami (6 IP, 7 H, 2 BB, 7 SO, O ER, 1 QSTART and 43 FP). I expect close to the same today and could see another 7+ innings and 6+ Ks for Gonzalez.
Career vs Current Phillies Roster
AVG: 0.206 [34 for 165], BABIP: 0.250, K%: 23.0, BB%: 6.6
FIP: 2.99 Groundout: 42Strikeout: 42 Single: 24Flyout: 16 Lineout: 14 Walk:12 Grounded Into DP: 8Double: 7 Pop Out: 4 Sac Bunt: 4 Forceout: 4 Home Run: 3 Field Error: 1 Hit By Pitch: 1 Batter Interference: 1
Other Stud Pitchers: Matt Harvey, Michael Pineda, JA Happ, Drew Pomeranz
Value/Sleeper Pitchers:

Dylan Bundy- He makes a great value play as he’s facing a Blue Jays’ offense that has been horrific to start the season. Bundy only had 23 FP in his last start against BOS but he faced this same Blue Jays team (minus Donaldson) where he pitched 7 innings, gave up only 4 hits, 0 walks, 8 Ks, 1 ER, and the W with 52 FP. I could see something very similar to that considering they will most likely be putting Chris Coghlan on 3rd again today.
Career vs Current Blue Jays Roster
AVG: 0.097 [3 for 31], BABIP: 0.143, K%: 30.3, BB%: 6.1

Daily Matchups for 4/15/2017
Top Pitchers

Chris Sale- There honestly isn’t a Red Sox pitcher who we would want to take this season other than Sale. When Sale isn’t on the mound, the Sox are just terrible. Sale has back to back great 7+ inning starts with 51 FP and 46 FP respectively against both DET and PIT. He has a terrific match-up against a TB team he has handled well in the past.
Career vs Current Rays Roster
AVG: 0.156 [14 for 90], BABIP: 0.233, K%: 31.3, BB%: 5.2
FIP: 1.41 Strikeout: 30 Groundout: 21 Single: 12Flyout: 10 Pop Out: 7 Walk: 5 Lineout: 5Double: 2 Grounded Into DP: 1 Field Error: 1Forceout: 1 Hit By Pitch: 1

Jake Arrieta- He’s the second highest pitcher on the slate today but for good reason. He has a great track record against the Pirates and has back to back great starts and is 2-0 to start the season. He had a 52 FP outing against the Brew Crew and a 46 FP outing against the Cardinals to start the season. Arrieta makes a great cash play or even a GPP play but remember, we told you the $8k range is where you’ll take a pitcher to build around to take down the average GPP.
Career vs Current Pirates Roster
AVG: 0.208 [50 for 240], BABIP: 0.267, K%: 24.9, BB%: 6.1
FIP: 2.72 Groundout: 66 Strikeout: 65 Single: 38Flyout: 22 Walk: 16 Lineout: 14 Double: 8 Pop Out: 7 Grounded Into DP: 5 Forceout: 4 Home Run: 4 Hit By Pitch: 4 Fielders Choice Out: 3Field Error: 2 Bunt Groundout: 1 Double Play: 1Sac Bunt: 1

Lance McCullers Jr- You’re reading this thinking stud?! He’s had back to back 46 FP outings over on Fanduel and I absolutely love his match-up against an Oakland team that has started the season 5-6 and hasn’t been hitting as well as people may have thought. It’s true his stats against the A’s isn’t the best, but he’s been a strike out pitcher this season so far with 17 Ks in only 2 starts. Look for him to be an under-the-radar play today.
Career vs Current Athletics Roster
AVG: 0.382 [13 for 34], BABIP: 0.480, K%: 20.0, BB%: 15.0
FIP: 5.34 Single: 9 Strikeout: 8 Groundout: 7Walk: 6 Double: 3 Flyout: 2 Lineout: 2 Pop Out:1 Forceout: 1 Home Run: 1
Other Stud Pitchers: Jose Quintana, Justin Verlander, Kenta Maeda
Value/Sleeper Pitchers:

CC Sabathia- Sabathia has turned from a dominant strikeout pitcher to more of a finesse pitcher the first part of last season and the start of the 2017 campaign. He’s not striking out as many batters as you’re used to (3 against BAL, and 2 against TAM) but he’s gotten the job done for the Yankees. He has dominated the St. Louis Cardinals in the past (when he was with the Brew Crew) and he should fair well again today as long as the offense sticks to the course and continues with their 5 game winning streak.
Career vs Current Cardinals Roster
AVG: 0.147 [5 for 34], BABIP: 0.160, K%: 23.1, BB%: 10.3
FIP: 3.96 Strikeout: 9 Flyout: 7 Groundout: 5Double: 4 Walk: 4 Lineout: 3 Grounded Into DP:2 Sac Fly: 1 Home Run: 1 Pop Out: 1 Field Error:1 Forceout: 1

Prospects of the Day: Kolby Allard Impresses In Double-A
Thursday saw some very good pitching performances by some top pitching prospects in the minor league. Youngster Kolby Allard showed what he is made of at Double-A and Josh Staumont, Erick Fedde, and Tyler Eppler all had outstanding outings. Cody Bellinger went deep for the second time this season.
Players Of The Day
Kolby Allard
5 Innings Pitched- 2 Walks- 3 Strikeouts- 3 Hits Allowed
Kolby Allard and his teammate Mike Soroka are two of the youngest players in the Southern League, both skipping over High-A. That label has not slowed either one down and Allard proved it further yesterday.
Allard did not allow a run in his start against the Tennessee Smokies and lasted 5 innings in the effort. He could have gone farther in the game, but there are restrictions in place on Allard due to an innings limit and the such. He did not strikeout many in the game, only 3, but was still very effective pitching to contact. He made it a focus of his to work on his changeup this year and today and from the early looks of it so far this year it is effective. Besides the changeup, Allard has a low-90s fastball with movement and a devastating 12-6 curve. The low strikeout total yesterday should be of no concern as it is clear he was working on the changeup and not trying to be too fine with his other pitches.
Allard is only 19 years old, but is already in Double-A. Allard keeps impressing with every start and it will be interesting to see how he does next time out to see if he can keep up this success. He could be one of the key pieces in the Braves’ rebuild. He isn’t the top prospect of the day due to the outcome of his performance but rather the magnitude of his performance.
Top Prospects Of The Day
Is Francisco Lindor Adding Legit Power to His Arsenal?
The first two seasons of Francisco Lindor’s MLB career couldn’t have gone much better – especially when specifically talking about his individual performance. He’s paired Gold Glove defense with more-than-adequate production at the plate, but if we had to nitpick, his offense did take a slight step back last year compared to his rookie campaign.
Despite getting over 200 more plate appearances to work with, his wRC+, Isolated Power (ISO), wOBA and OPS all dropped.
But still, it’s not like any club wouldn’t take a 6.3-fWAR player that posted a .301/.358/.435 triple slash with 15 homers, 78 RBI, 99 runs scored, 19 stolen bases and Gold Glove defense at shortstop.
Entering his age-23 campaign, we know there’s room for growth as he continues approaching his physical prime. Could we be seeing that already with an early-season power binge?
Through 42 plate appearances, Lindor has hit 4 home runs and produced a .441 ISO. It took him until May 27th (201 plate appearances) to reach 4 homers last year.
Some could obviously look at this hot start and call it just that – we’re dealing with a small sample size, after all. And they’re not wrong – we’ll indeed have to wait a bit to see how sustainable his current performance is.
But what have been the reasons behind his fast start in the power department this year? Is it just a hot streak or could it be a sign of growth from the young shortstop?

Travis d’Arnaud reached base 5 times, drove in 4 including a 16th inning homer that was the difference in the Mets 9-8 win in Miami.
Jimmy Nelson gave the Brewers 7 innings allowing 5 hits and 1 run and earned the 5-1 victory over the Reds.
Aaron Hicks homered twice as the Yankees beat Tampa Bay, 3-2.
Jason Vargas pitched shutout ball into the 8th, finishing with 7 2/3 innings, allowing 4 hits and striking out 8 A’s batters to get the 3-1 decision for the Royals.

Sully Baseball Podcast – What is good changes plus remembering the 2006 Twins – April 13, 2017

Jim Mone, AP
What we consider to be good and bad used to be objective in baseball. But was it ever really?

Prospects of the Day : Jeimer Candelario’s Aggressive Approach Pays Off
Another day of stud loaded stand out performances continues as Jeimer Candelario logs his third five-RBI game of this short season. Brent Honeywell also continued to show why he is one of the best pitching prospects in baseball with another scoreless outing logging eight strikeouts in seven innings pitched. Lastly, Juan Soto and Albert Abreu continue to enamor scouts and fans with their enormous raw potential lower in the minors and adding fuel to the hype that follows both of them.
Player of the Day
Jeimer Candelario
4-4 2 R 3B BB 5 RBI
The Cubs’ farm is loaded with good hitting prospects and Jeimer Candelario is one of their best hitting prospects. Candelario is only still in the minors because there isn’t a position for him on the Major-league team where he can see regular at-bats and tap into his potential. The left-handed third baseman picked up his third five-RBI game of the young season. The key to his success has come from his coaches stressing him on being more aggressive at the plate especially with runners in scoring position. Swinging early in his at-bats has helped him collected 15 RBI so far and hitting to the tune of .370. His Double-A hitting coach last year Desi Wilson, mentioned that he can see the difference from last year to this year, before he was starting his at bats 0-1 or 0-2 which made it harder for him get a pitch to hit. Last night he hit a triple showcasing his nice line drive swing into the gap of the outfield.
Since joining the Cubs organization in 2010, Candelario’s development has been a roller coaster having superb seasons and then struggling for extended periods. The inconsistency has lead to having to repeat both High A and Double A. Now that he is showcasing a maturity that has produced consistency the Cubs should be trying to find a position for him.

Daily Matchups for 4/13/2017
Top Pitchers

Yu Darvish- Absolutely love his match-up today against Ricky Nolasco and the Angels. Darvish is still looking for his first W of the season and why not tonight? His past two outings he’s combined for 12.1 innings, 8 hits, 5 ERs, 1 HR, 8 Walks, 9 Ks and an 0-1 record. He’s had mild sucess against the Angels in the past and could find himself in the W column after tonight’s game.
Career vs Current Angels Roster
AVG: 0.231 [28 for 121], BABIP: 0.247, K%: 26.2, BB%: 11.3
FIP: 6.14 Strikeout: 36 Single: 17 Groundout: 17Walk: 16 Flyout: 14 Pop Out: 11 Home Run: 9Lineout: 5 Grounded Into DP: 3 Forceout: 2 Hit By Pitch: 2 Field Error: 2 Triple: 1 Sac Fly: 1Double Play: 1 Fielders Choice: 1 Strikeout – DP: 1 Double: 1 Sac Bunt: 1

Madison Bumgarner- Like Darvish, MadBum is still looking for his first win of the season as he’s coming off of a 2-1 loss where he pitched 8 innings, gave up 6 hits, 2 ERs, 2 walks and 5 Ks. In that match-up against the Padres he induced 14 ground balls and 12 fly balls. The Giant’s offense just couldn’t get anything going for him so he looks to regroup and dominate a Rockies’ lineup that didn’t do much offensively in Coors over the past 6 days.
Career vs Current Rockies Roster
AVG: 0.249 [51 for 205], BABIP: 0.289, K%: 22.4, BB%: 9.5
FIP: 4.49 Strikeout: 52 Single: 33 Groundout: 33Flyout: 23 Walk: 21 Pop Out: 13 Lineout: 12Double: 9 Grounded Into DP: 8 Home Run: 8Forceout: 8 Field Error: 5 Sac Fly: 2 Sac Bunt: 2Hit By Pitch: 1 Triple: 1 Intent Walk: 1

Jordan Zimmermann- J-Zimm pitched masterfully against the Red Sox on April 8th with 6 IP, allowing only 4 hits and 1 ER, 1 walk and 3 Ks. He got the W and looks to continue that today against Phil Hughes and the Twins. The Twins can score on anyone this season so far (see Fulmer yesterday) but we like his odds if you’re playing the Early-Only slate.
Career vs Current Twins Roster
AVG: 0.231 [12 for 52], BABIP: 0.333, K%: 34.0, BB%: 1.9
FIP: 1.67 Strikeout: 18 Single: 10 Groundout: 10Flyout: 4 Forceout: 2 Pop Out: 2 Home Run: 1Grounded Into DP: 1 Bunt Groundout: 1 Walk: 1Field Error: 1 Lineout: 1 Double: 1

Classic Milwaukee Brewers Opponents – The 1980 Toronto Blue Jays
The Milwaukee Brewers played in the American League East division from 1972-93. In 2017, the Brewers will play many of their old foes from the East in Interleague matchups. Baltimore, Boston, Toronto, and the New York Yankees are all on the schedule this season. To celebrate the glory days of the old AL East, I’ve created a “classic opponents” series of blog posts. I’ll be covering great games, opposing teams, and even individual players from the East, particularly from Milwaukee’s golden baseball era of 1978-82. I’ll be keeping this series fair and balanced – so Milwaukee isn’t always crushing Toronto or striking Reggie Jackson out four times in a game.
Since the Brewers are in Toronto for an Interleague series this week, let’s kick things off with the 1980 Toronto Blue Jays.

Yoenis Cespedes homered three times and added a double, driving in 5 in the Mets 14-4 blow out over Philadelphia.
Robbie Ray shutout the Giants into the 7th, finishing with 6 2/3 scoreless frames, 4 hits and 8 strikeouts to earn the 4-3 decision for the Diamondbacks.
Christian Vazquez collected 4 hits, including a double and a triple, scored 2, drove in 2 and stole a base to help the Red Sox thrash Baltimore, 8-1.
Matthew Boyd held the Twins to 1 hit and no runs over 6 innings, striking out 6 along the way. He earned the 2-1 final for Detroit.

Daily Fantasy MLB DFS Picks For Fanduel & DraftKings 4/12/17
Wednesday is always a great day for MLB DFS because we normally have a full 15 game slate. That’s the case today for the 4/12/17 slate of MLB DFS Games. Daily Matchups for 4/12/2017
Top Pitchers
Max Scherzer- Scherzer is always a stud when he’s on the bump but we like it even better tonight against a struggling St. Louis Cardinals team who have lost 2 in a row, sit on the bottom of the NL Central and look lost at the plate. Scherzer is coming off his dominating performance on April 7th that saw him pitch 6.2 innings, allowed only 4 hits (2 ERs) walking only 2 and striking out 7. He ending up with 98 pitches so it appears he isn’t on any sort of pitch count and absolutely love his numbers against a Cardinals team that used to be really good.
Career vs Current Cardinals Roster
AVG: 0.219 [28 for 128], BABIP: 0.289, K%: 28.1, BB%: 3.0
FIP: 2.05 Strikeout: 38 Flyout: 22Groundout: 20 Single: 18 Pop Out: 9Lineout: 7 Double: 7 Walk: 4 Forceout: 2Home Run: 2 Bunt Groundout: 1 Triple: 1Sac Bunt: 1 Grounded Into DP: 1 Sac Fly: 1 Hit By Pitch: 1
John Lackey- No matter how many times you say his name, it’s still not sexy. Anytime you can take the Cub’s pitcher with the offense behind them, it’s generally a great idea. Lackey is coming off a great game on April 6th against the foe Cardinals where he pitched 6 innings, gave up only 6 his including 4 runs (3 ERs) walking only 2 and striking out 7 on his way to his first win of his season. He’s also dominated the Dodgers to the tune of under a .200 bA in 74 ABs which we will show you below.
Career vs Current Dodgers Roster
AVG: 0.189 [14 for 74], BABIP: 0.237, K%: 18.8, BB%: 10.6
FIP: 2.95 Flyout: 17 Strikeout: 16Groundout: 16 Single: 12 Walk: 9 Pop Out:5 Lineout: 3 Field Error: 2 Triple: 2 Sac Bunt: 1 Hit By Pitch: 1 Forceout: 1
Michael Fulmer- Stop me if you’ve heard us suggest him before. Fulmer is coming off of his first start of the season against the feared Red Sox offense where he pitched 6 innings of 4 hit ball, walking 2 and only striking out 4 but coming up with the win. Of course we’d love to see more strike outs out of Fulmer, but a W is a win. Fulmer is going up against a Twins team that somehow is in first place right now but he’s opposing the Twins’ Kyle Gibson.
Career vs Current Twins Roster
AVG: 0.353 [6 for 17], BABIP: 0.385, K%: 16.7, BB%: 5.6
FIP: 6.33 Groundout: 5 Single: 4 Strikeout:3 Pop Out: 2 Walk: 1 Double: 1 Home Run:1 Flyout: 1
Marcus Stroman- Stroman has only seen the Brewers for 18 total at bats so around 1 start and the results have been mixed, but he’s coming off a terrific start against a TB team where he pitching into the 7th inning (6.1) allowing 6 hits and only 1 ER with 5 Ks and getting 11 ground balls to only 6 FBs.
Career vs Current Brewers Roster
AVG: 0.333 [6 for 18], BABIP: 0.385, K%: 18.2, BB%: 13.6
FIP: 6.70 Groundout: 4 Strikeout: 4 Flyout:3 Walk: 3 Double: 3 Single: 2 Home Run: 1Hit By Pitch: 1 Lineout: 1
Value/Sleeper Pitchers:

Ivan Nova- We suggested Nova last week when he went up against the Atlanta Braves and that worked out very well for us. In that game he pitched 6 innings allowing only 6 hits, 1 run, striking out 4 and getting the W. He’s got another great match-up pitching at home against the Cincinnati Reds who he has fared well against in the past. Would not be the least bit surprised if Nova goes for 7 innings with 6+ strikeouts tonight.
Career vs Current Reds Roster
AVG: 0.250 [17 for 68], BABIP: 0.276, K%: 14.3, BB%: 1.4
FIP: 2.96 Groundout: 19 Flyout: 11Single: 10 Strikeout: 10 Double: 6Lineout: 6 Grounded Into DP: 3 Home Run: 1 Sac Fly: 1 Pop Out: 1 Field Error: 1 Walk: 1

The Top 250 MLB Prospects For 2017
PLAYERS LIKELY RISING THE TOP PROSPECT RANKING
RANK 218 – FRANKLIN PEREZ
Franklin Perez is a tough cookie to quantify. He is 19 years-old with a decent fastball and a curveball that shows hints of elite status and throws at plus on a bad day.
On the surface, I am in love with Franklin Perez and think he has the chance to be something magnificent long-term.
Question marks arise on pitches outside his curve and are primarily geared at the change up. He also needs to clean up his delivery and become more repeatable. He is very early on in the development for a transitional pitcher from third base.
Though this ranking is likely more passive than aggressive, the future for Perez could net him a top 50 grade by season’s end if he showcases improvement in the mentioned areas. At the moment he looks like a potential SP4 with the upside of an SP2.
With his current offerings and age in mind, he didn’t calculate out higher than other names who are younger or hold better offerings. But, that doesn’t mean he can’t beat them out quickly. Read the rest of this entry
PROSPECTS OF THE DAY: MIKE SOROKA POSTING A 12.6 K/9
Soroka was Atlanta’s first-round pick in 2015 out of high school in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and has gone on to climb organizational charts since. After a steady 2016 in a full season of Class-A ball, the Braves brass felt confident promoting Soroka directly onto the Double-A Mississippi Braves roster where he made his 2017 debut on Monday.
Soroka flourished. He mixed in his regular combination of a sinking fastball, slider, and changeup and avoided walking a single batter in five innings of work. He struck out seven batters over those innings – five of his first nine outs recorded – and validated John Hart & Co.’s decision to accelerate his development after that aggressive promotion to Double-A ball earlier than anyone anticipated.
Soroka’s combination of skills allows for optimism regarding his floor. He already exhibits the characteristics of a solid, mid-rotation starter and his early work as a 19-year old in Double-A grants some further hope that he might even be able to take another leap forward toward a front-end slot.
Yesterday’s Top Prospects
Yoenis Cespedes’ Slow Start Hasn’t Been All That Bad
As evidenced by their young starting rotation, the New York Mets are a team — and organization, for that matter — built around starting pitching. However, while having a dominant starting staff is awesome, we’ve seen that offense is just as important toward their eventual success.
After all, you still have to score more runs than the other team to win.
For the Mets, it doesn’t really matter how deep the offense appears on paper because it all flows through Yoenis Cespedes. Considering the fact that he’s slashed .154/.267/.308 in 30 plate appearances thus far — good for a 63 wRC+ — it shouldn’t be totally shocking to see New York scuffling a bit out of the gate because their offense hasn’t gotten into a groove yet.
And yes, there’s no possible way we can draw any conclusions from a seven-game sample size, but there are a couple of encouraging trends from Cespedes now that we’re one week into the regular season.

Matt Moore threw 8 innings, allowing 3 hits, no walks and 1 run and earned the 4-1 decision for the Giants over Arizona.
Michael Pineda was brilliant into the 8th, striking out 11 Rays batters, allowing 2 hits and 1 walk and won the 8-1 final for the Yankees.
Chase Headley reached base 3 times, including a homer, scoring twice to help the Yankees past Tampa Bay, 8-1.
