Last night was strange in the big leagues.

The Mariners keep giving the ball to a closer who is having a terrible season and he was awful last night. Derrek Norris had a rotten night at the plate. And yet both were celebrating at the end!

Meanwhile in Little League, a nice friendly game turned petty because of one coach and competitive because of my nature!

It is a good sportsman Episode 947 of The Sully Baseball Daily Podcast.

Josh Hamilton, Buster Posey, Taijuan Walker, Chad Bettis, Adam Lind, Cole Hamels, Hanley Ramirez and Trevor Bauer all added to their totals for Who Owns Baseball?

Seattle Is Poised For 2015 Dominance: But Off To A Slow Start

Seattle was everyone's pick to win the American League it seemed. A slow start mirrored the beginning of the 2014 season as well. There are some outliers though, as they spent 10 of their 1st 13 games on the road. The club has looked a lot better of the last week. included in that were awesome starts by Felix Hernandez. Nelson Cruz has also picked up where he left off in 2014, with an MLB leading 9 HRs and 18 RBI in the teams first 16 games.

Forgive me for a second while I didn’t lose sleep on the Mariners losing Chris Taylor for some time early this year  I actually think that Brad Miller may have a chance to breakout this year.

But more importantly Seattle had themselves a great offseason.  Yes.. you read that right.  I am endorsing Jack Z. for a job well done, even though he saw fit to sign Endy Chavez and Franklin Gutierrez for yet one more year.  But since the club is full with depth, I am hoping the guys wont be counted on.

Last year the club had to start the year without Hisashi Iwakuma, James Paxton and Taijuan Walker for the majority of the 1st half, and while Paxton has still been bothered my a flexor strain early in the year, his arsenal speaks to the of an ace. Read the rest of this entry

The Most Recent Cycle Hit For Each Team

Why doesn’t hitting for the Cycle get the same love as throwing a no hitter?

Seriously, hitting for the cycle is just about as uncommon as a no hitter. Only 305 cycles have been hit, as opposed to 287 no hitters.

Getting the perfect combination of a single, double, triple and homer requires skill, consistency and an obscene amount of luck.

Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, Barry Bonds and Willie Mays never did it once.

Michael Cuddyer, Chris Speier and Brad Wilkerson did it twice.

There has never been a cycle hit in the post season, as opposed to a pair of October no-no’s (Don Larsen and Roy Halladay.)

The Marlins have never had a player hit for the cycle. Neither have the Padres, who also have never had a no hitter.

So while I carefully update the list of the most current no hitter for each franchise, I have neglected to do the same for players who hit for the cycle… until now.

The pic is of the last cycle, hit by Michael Cuddyer, who has done so in both leagues (along with Bob Watson and John Olerud.)

Some of the teams have waited a while for an update. Eric Davis’ cycle in 1989 remains the last time it happened for Cincinnati. The Expos (2003) have had one more recently than the Red Sox (1996.)

Here is the list, to be updated when the next cycle is hit!

MLB Shutout Survivor 2015: Which Team Do You Have Last To Be Blanked This Year?

2014's Shutout Survivor Winners. The club nearly made it all the way to Memorial Day before they were shutout last year. The team had a great offense, and rode it to an MLB Best record last year. I would still put the Jays, Red Sox and O's.

2014’s Shutout Survivor Winners were the Angels. The club nearly made it all the way to Memorial Day before they were shutout last year. The team had a great offense, and rode it to an MLB Best record last year. I would still put the Jays, Red Sox and O’s ahead of them in 2015 with those team’s respective lineups all being strong, and playing in a less pitcher friendly Division with the AL East.

Hunter Stokes (Chief Writer)

Follow The MLB Reports On Twitter

Last Year the D’Backs, A’s, Braves and  Cubs were the 1st teams to be blanked before March was even over.  To their credit, Arizona was in their 3rd game while the others were in their season openers.

The winner of the competition last year were the Los Angeles Angels who almost made it all the way to Memorial Day weekend without being bageled.

It was between them and the Rockies (NL Winner) for the overall win, and the Halo’s won out.

Despite a depleted lineup early, the Rangers made it all the way to 3rd place in the category, and their pitching staff also took the most other clubs by hanging a zero on them.

In 2015, I still believe the favorites, if doing a betting line,  would have to be the Colorado Rockies again.  Not only do they play exceedingly well every first 6 weeks of the year, and they play at Coors Field, but they start the campaign at least with Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki. The Struggles Of Josh Hamilton: Despite Massive Talent, He Has Underwhelmed in LA, But Layoff The Guy For His Addiction Battle!

Josh Hamilton from a much younger time in his life. He fought off his drug addiction in his early 20's, to become one of the best players in the game from 2008 - 2012. Following a recent list of injuries and personal battles, he has suffered a relapse in his addiction. In the first two months of 2012 Josh Hamilton was putting up historic numbers and was on his way to a Cooperstown resume.  I even wrote a column on how he was the best baseball player on the planet.

I had evidence to support my statement.  In his 1st 47 Games, the man had 21 HRs and 57 RBI, while batting nearly .400, with an OPS that neared 1.200.  Included in those impressive totals was a 4 HR game at Camden Yards.

During my 30 MLB Park streak the 1st 4 weeks of the season, I saw Hamilton play four games.  He clubbed 3 HRs and added 3 doubles in his AB during the games I witnessed, and he hit one jack at Target Field that may have not landed yet.  This man was pistol hot. I had no doubt he would continue to post Hall Of Fame credentials in that  season, and for many years to come.

Right after that he quit chewing tobacco, and has been plagued with problems since.  He has left the Texas Rangers, been hurt and underperformed since signing with the Angels.  Read the rest of this entry

A Early Look at Future Hall of Fame Candidates

"<strong

Craig Biggio finally got his “call to the hall” and should set an example for players who didn’t get that call on their first try. Other notable players are still on the ballot, and should receive legitimate consideration for induction in the future.

The BBWAA elected four players into the Baseball Hall of Fame for the class of 2015: Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, John Smoltz and Craig Biggio. This is the first time that the BBWAA has elected four players in 60 years, as these four players truly exemplify what the MLB Hall of Fame is all about.

Now that the official results have been released, we can now take a look at not only some of the guys who will return on the ballot in the upcoming years, but also some future eligible players who present a very interesting case for their enshrinement into the Hall of Fame.

The Evil Empire Is About To Crumble In The Bronx!

With almost $100 MIL tied up in contracts for Sabathia, A-Rod, Teixeira and a potential Tommy John Surgery candidate in Masahiro Tanaka, this New York squad is in some deep trouble for next season. Despite the recent playoff misses, and injury prone players brought in by Brian Cashman, the club saw fit to grant him a 3 year extension last month. It may take a small miracle for them to make a playoff spot next campaign..

The Yankees have long used the prolong success of the “core four” to drive them to go far in the playoffs. They then surrounded them by free agents and other homegrown players.

Today the Yankees are in some trouble and if they aren’t smart this offseason they will remain hampered by large contracts for a long time instead of a quick retool to be VERY competitive in two years.

Let me show you what I’m talking about

Here is their Starting lineup and their ages:

LF Brett Gardner 31
3B/2B Martin Prado 31
CF Jacoby Ellsbury 31
C Brian McCann 30
RF Carlos Beltran 37
1B Mark Teixeira 34
DH Alex Rodriguez 39
2B Robert Refsnyder 23 (Or acquisition at 3B, Prado plays 2B)
SS Brendan Ryan 32

Not exactly Spring chickens over there. The only player under 30 is one that will almost absolutely be replaced by someone who is most likely over 30. This at this moment isn’t exactly a star studded lineup, but the way that their being paid might make it seem that way. Read the rest of this entry

As Of Right Now – The Yankees Are A Mess For 2015: End Of The Year ‘State Of The Union’

With almost $100 MIL tied up in contracts for Sabathia, A-Rod, Teixeira and a potential Tommy John Surgery candidate in Masahiro Tanaka, this New York squad is in some deep trouble for next season. Despite the recent playoff misses, and injury prone players brought in by Brian Cashman, the club saw fit to grant him a 3 year extension last week

Let me get this straight…The ‘Bronx Bombers’ have missed the playoff for 2 years straight and no one has lost their jobs?  Man how times have changed in Yankees land.

If George Steinbrenner were alive still right now, the twitter and social media world would be trending his name for all of October.

Since when is it acceptable to miss the playoffs, underachieve and spend to the best payroll in the American League?

Firing Kevin Long is not going to solve the hit crisis the club has.

Before any of you throw daggers at our site, we have had this stance for a couple of years now.

The 1st mistake was to not get under the Luxury Tax Threshold this season.  That was soon followed by inking Brett Gardner to a 4 Year Deal, when you have such a similar player in the Outfield like Jacoby Ellsbury. Read the rest of this entry

2014 ALCS Preview: O’s Vs Royals

This year's 2014 ALCS matches up two teams that not many people predicted to get to this point, but as arguably the two hottest teams in baseball, the Baltimore Orioles and the Kansas City Royals definitely will be a fun and exciting series to watch.

It’s been a while since the Baltimore Orioles and the Kansas City Royals have found themselves in the American League Championship Series, but the wait for these two fan bases is finally over.

These two teams will open up a best-of-seven series at Camden Yards on Friday night.

Although it isn’t the usual suspects we see in the series (such as the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox of the world), baseball fans should definitely keep an eye on this series, as two of the hottest teams in baseball will face off to determine who represents the American League in the World Series.

ATR (Ask The Reports) Sept.20, 2014: World Series Betting + MVP Talk!

Every once in a while we will air the (ATR special, like our founder Jonathan Hacohen used to do every week).  Sometimes a lot of good questions are asked, all at the same time.

Rather than go on for days on social twitter, it is easier writing in a format that doesn’t limit you to 140 characters:

We had 2 such questions that were good enough to write an article about.

Q:  Who do you think should be the MVP in both the AL and NL this year?

A: This one is easier in the AL than the NL, but I would like to point out that the clear-cut favorite (Mike Trout) is not having as good of a year that he did in 2012 and 2013, however this trophy is going his way with the year LA has had.

Will finish with 35 HRs and 110+ RBI, with over 110 Runs scored, (currently has 81 Extra Base Hits for huge MLB Lead) and his stellar defense is definitely the difference separating him from Martinez (a primary DH) and Cabrera.

I will also point out that Victor Martinez  (.970 OPS, 30 HRs and 104 RBI) would certainly be right up there if he weren’t playing on the Tigers.

His numbers, contact rate, and overall professionalism as a hitter have saved Detroit’s bacon this year.

V-Mart is hurt by the fact Cabrera is on the same club.  For as much as the two time reigning MVP has been dealing with injury,. his so-called “down year” still has him with a 3 Slash Line of .318/.380/.527 with 104 RBI.

The big 1B for Detroit has seen his HRs cut nearly in half, but he is still leading the league in Doubles with 49 – and has 73 Extra Base Hits are even more than he had last year.

The Tigers never running away with the competition also is a drawback for both players. Read the rest of this entry

A Regional World Series In 2014? NYY/BOS/ATL Maybe All Out Of The Playoffs For 1st Time Since 1989

battle of the bay

Chuck Booth (Owner/Lead  Analyst), with a heavy assist for the idea to Josh Robbins:

The Nationals and Orioles both locked down their respective league’s East Division’s last night.  Could it be a possible Beltway World  Series?

Or how about a Freeway Series (I-5) between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Los Angeles Angels Of Orange County near Disneyland and Fullerton (or whatever Arte Moreno’s team us called now).

a a angels and dodgers 2

If that doesn’t tickle your fancy, maybe iconic close series of 1985 and 1989 respectively, meaning the I-70 series (KC vs STL) or the Bay Bridge (Earthquake Series), between the A’s and Giants.

Both of those winning clubs have not won the Fall Classic since those years.

Even Detroit and Pittsburgh are only 284 Miles apart, should they have a chance meeting.

Who is not here for the 1st time in 20 years – will probably be the Braves (whose playoff chances are on fumes), and the Yankees/Red Sox all failed to have at least one representative of those 3 in the Post Season since 1989, when the Cubs, Dodgers, A’s and Blue Jays made the playoffs.

2009 was the last time teams within close proximity to each other squared off in the World Series – when the Yanks took out the defending champion Phillies in 6 games.

The Yankees/Mets 2000 “Subway Series” was the last time two teams in the same city played in the Fall Classic, something the 2 Los Angeles squad’s could do.

Stop Praising The Yankees For 2014! + Someone Should Be Held Accountable For This Disaster!

The Yankees can't stop themselves from spending!! A self-imposed cap of under $189 MIL was shot when injuries began to mount. The club should have packed it in for the year, with nothing but a hope and a prayer. Now because they couldn't fall under the Salary Tax Threshold, it will take a miracle to reach underneath this mark before the 2016 CBA. Welcome to financial hell Yanks, and your team is old - and have no Starting Pitcher's above the #5 slot to begin 2015, and your payroll is already nearing $200 MIL.

The club should have packed it in for the year, traded veterans near the deadline, with nothing but a hope and a prayer to make the playoffs. Now because they couldn’t fall under the Salary Tax Threshold, it will take a miracle to reach underneath this mark before the 2016 CBA. Welcome to financial hell Yanks, and your team is old – and have no Starting Pitcher’s likely above the #5 slot to begin the 2015 season currently on your 40 man roster under contract, and your payroll is already nearing $175 MIL on just 17 players as it is.  Despite all of this, the Yankees are set to offer Cashman an extension?  Are they for real?

I am sick and tired of hearing all this praise being bestowed on Brian Cashman for the job he is done.

I will not lump Joe Girardi into this conversation,  Heck, he has done a great job manipulating the roster he has been given.  With the amount of  injuries (which happens to old players – hello!) the Yanks are lucky they are not cellar dwelling with the Red Sox.

Back near the Trade Deadline, Chuck Booth explained the “Pinstripers” were foolish to not take advantage of a seller’s market, giving them the ability to deal some veterans – in order to get under the $189 MIL Luxury Tax Threshold.  They were 47 – 47 at the ALL – Star Break. It Is Time To Move Miguel Cabrera Permanently To The DH Role

Someone should be tackled if they put Cabrera back in the field for the remainder of the 2014 season. I personally believe he should be transitioned to the DH position permanently. You are speaking about the best pure offensive player in the game. The man has to play for the next decade.

Someone should be tackled if they put Cabrera back in the field for the remainder of the 2014 season. I personally believe he should be transitioned to the DH position permanently. You are speaking about the best pure offensive player in the game. The man has to play for the next decade.  Cabrera has fought his off season surgery for a torn groin, to put up decent numbers in 2014 – .310/.370/.514 3 Slash Line with 22 HRs and 101 RBI.  Yes, he is leading the league with 45 Doubles, but he will likely fail to hit 30 HRs for the 1st time as a Tiger this campaign. The .885 OPS would also mark his worst total since his rookie year.  He has shown this week he can handle the DH role.

I am not talking just about 2014 here.  Miguel Cabrera has come off his short rest, to bash out 8 hits in 3 games – since taking the position of DH on the club.  So I say…just leave him there forever.

Often I have wondered why more teams don’t just take advantage of the slot in the American League.  Instead, for most clubs, the Designated Hitter is used as an off day, or for matchup preferences.

You want to know why Boston has 3 World Series in the last 10 years… I will tell you… David Ortiz!!

Big Papi has been so much more productive than every other player at the role, that having him against the pack gives the Red Sox a clear cut upper hand.

I know Cabrera is making megabucks now, but are you really going to miss his defensive prowess at 1B?

Who cares about piling up AL MVP’s because the voters are always biased about 1 way players.  The Tigers should be going for World Series Titles, and what better way to preserve their #1 commodity. Read the rest of this entry

What Masahiro Tanaka’s Injury Means For The Yankees In 2014 + 2015

With Masahiro Tanaka out for at least 6 weeks with a UCL tear, the Yankees are dealing with 4/5ths of their opening day rotation now on the DL - with their 5th starter (Kuroda) having struggled in the 2nd half of 2013. The club is barely at .500, and must realize their is an opportunity to reset the 50% Luxury Tax Threshold to 0, by slashing some payroll via trades in the next 3 weeks. The worst thing this organization could do would try to salvage this year, like they did in 2013, by adding payroll, flipping prospects, for an ill-advised playoff run that the odds are stacked up against.

I have talked at length about the Yankees precarious position of defining whether or not they are contenders or not, and whether they should seek selling off some assets, to fall below the $189 MIL Luxury Tax Threshold – or if the franchise should run at a postseason berth in Derek Jeter‘s last season.

Seeing that Masahiro Tanaka will be out for at least 6 weeks with a partially torn UCL on his pitching arm, and possibly be out with Tommy John Surgery afterwards, this season outlook is becoming bleak.

Even with the Japanese superstar throwing at a premium level, the club would have a longshot chance to make the playoffs – and do some damage. Read the rest of this entry

The Most Recent No Hitter For Each Franchise (Updated For Clayton Kershaw, June 18, 2014)

Chris Carlson - AP

Chris Carlson – AP

The second Dodger no hitter this season!

Well Josh Beckett didn’t last long on this list! Less than a month ago, Beckett threw the first no no of the year. Tonight, the ace of the Dodger staff showed the Rockies why he is a multiple Cy Young winner.

In fact, only Hanley Ramirez‘s error kept him from being perfect.

It is safe to say that he will take it.

Still no San Diego Padres nor Washington Nationals no hitter yet (although the Nationals franchise have no hitters as the Expos and the city of Washington had some with the Senators.)

It is time to update my list!
