2016 MLB Amateur Draft Fantasy Baseball Rankings

The 2016 MLB Draft was completed last week, so now it is time to take a look at the impact these rookies will have on fantasy baseball. Keep in mind that these rankings don’t take into account their ETA, but rather their long-term impact. Depending on when you are looking to compete, these rankings could change for you, so pay attention to the estimated time of arrival (ETA) that is stated. If you have any questions about this article or the player, please tweet me @dynasty_digest.

  1. Jason Groome (Boston Red Sox; LHP; ETA- 2020): Jason Groome was drafted 12th overall by the Boston Red Sox. Many people considered Groome a top-3 prospect, but he slid down the board due to multiple reasons. There has been rumor that Groome might not sign unless he receives a signing bonus that a top-5 draft pick would make, but it’s looking like the Red Sox will have enough money left over to give Groome the payday he wants. If he does sign, Groome will become part of an already dominant Boston Red Sox minor league system. Luckily for the Red Sox, Groome has frontline starter potential and could be an elite option in fantasy baseball at his prime. He stands 6’6 and 220 lbs, so he has the physical projectability, but he also has three above average to plus pitches that he can throw for strikes, which is saying a lot for a kid who is only 17 years old.

Daily Fantasy MLB DFS Picks For DraftKings 6/20/16

P- Clayton Kershaw (vs. Washington Nationals): $14,200. It is close to impossible not to start Kershaw every time he steps on the mound. He is averaging 30.1 points per game this season on DraftKings. He currently owns a 19-1 strikeout to walk ratio, so he should provide plenty of points every time he steps on the mound. In 155 career at bats against Kershaw, the Nationals’ offense is batting .219, with 48 strikeouts, and a .265 OBP.

P- Drew Smyly (vs. Cleveland Indians): In 77 career at bats against Smyly, the Indians’ offense is batting .195, with 24 strikeouts, and a .249 OBP. He struggled over the past month or so, but he dominated his last time out, in which he struck out 12 batters over seven innings.

P- Jacob deGrom (vs. Atlanta Braves): $11,300. deGrom has had some pretty bad luck recently when it comes to run support, but this hasn’t affected how well he has pitched. In his last five starts, he has four quality starts and he dominated the Pirates’ over his last two starts. In six career starts against the Braves, deGrom owns a 3-2 record with a 1.89 ERA.

P- Mike Fiers (vs. Cincinnati Reds): $6,500. Fiers is coming off one of his best starts of the season, in which he gave up two runs and five hits against the Rays in seven innings of work. He is pitching at home, which is very good. He owns a 3.67 ERA at home, compared to a 6.19 ERA on the road. In 67 career at bats against Fiers, the Reds’ lineup is batting .179, with one home run, seven XBH, 10 RBIs, 14 strikeouts, and a .242 OBP.

PETITION: Bartolo Colon Needs To Be In The Home Run Derby

There has been a lot of hype surrounding a possible pitcher’s home run derby this year, but it has not been confirmed. Most of the hype is surrounding guys like Madison Bumgarner or Jake Arrieta, but let’s be honest, there is only one pitcher that truly needs to be in the home run derby. That one pitcher is big sexy himself, Bartolo Colon.

Out of all the years I have watched baseball, I have never seen a player get more attention every time he swings the bat, sometimes makes contact, and even when he runs. This man would be an absolute gem if he received an invitation to the home run derby and we need to find a way to make it happen.  I have started a vote to try and petition Bartolo into the derby, so please join me and help!

Daily Fantasy MLB DFS Picks For DraftKings 6/17/16

P- Matt Harvey (vs. Atlanta Braves): $10,300. Harvey finally looks like he has turned it around. In his last three starts, he has only allowed two runs in 20 innings while striking out 17. He is facing a very bad Atlanta Brave offense, so he should continue his recent success. There are lots of other elite options for pitching today, but I think Harvey provides to most value at his price.

P- Julio Urias (vs. Milwaukee Brewers): $7,600. Milwaukee has struggled against left-handed pitching this year, so this is great for Urias. Urias struggled in his first few starts, but he has gotten better every start. He will be pitching in his home stadium, against a pretty bad lineup, so this should be a favorable matchup for Urias. Urias is currently sporting an 11.1 strikeout rate per nine innings pitched, which should net some good points on DraftKings.

Daily Fantasy MLB DFS Picks For DraftKings 6/16/16

P- Tanner Roark (vs. San Diego Padres): $10,300. Roark is by far the best pitching matchup on the slate for Thursday. He is facing a San Diego Padres offense that has struggled all season, and more importantly, recently. Over the last seven games, the Padres are batting .229 (25th overall), with 23 runs (26th overall), and a .286 OBP (28th overall). He will also be pitching at PetCo Park, which is known as a pitchers’ park. In 2016, Roark owns a 5-4 record, with 73 strikeouts, and a 2.93 ERA.

P- Dan Straily (vs. Atlanta Braves): $9,200. Honestly, I think any pitcher is a good start against the Atlanta Braves. Unless I’m stepping on that mound, you should feel comfortable that any MLB pitcher has a good shot at taking care of the Atlanta offense. In Straily’s last 10 starts, he has gone at least six innings in nine of those starts. He has gone at least seven innings in three of his last four starts. So far this season, he is 4-2, with 64 strikeouts, and a 3.15 ERA.

Daily Fantasy MLB DFS Picks For DraftKings 6/15/16

P- Corey Kluber (vs. Kansas City Royals): $13,100. This matchup almost looks too good to be true. Kluber has been very successful as of late. He is coming off his second complete game of the season, in which he gave up only three hits, with eight strikeouts against the Angels. He has gone at least six innings in his last six starts. He has also dominated the Royals throughout his career. In 240 career at bats against Kluber, the Royals’ offense is batting .204, with 60 strikeouts, and a .235 OBP.

P- Sonny Gray (vs. Texas Rangers): $7,100. Gray has really excelled in his first two starts since returning from the disabled list. In his first start, he threw five innings against the Astros giving up five hits, one run, and five strikeouts. In his second outing, he faced the Reds, in which he gave up five hits, two runs, and four strikeouts in 7.2 innings pitched. Gray does face a tough offense, but he is pitching at his home park, which is always a good sign. In 176 career at bats against Gray, the Rangers’ lineup is batting .210, with 34 strikeouts, and a .291 OBP.

Why Clayton Kershaw Should Be The National League MVP

That title is a bold statement, but I’m standing by my words. Clayton Kershaw is playing at a level that isn’t even comparable to other pitchers in 2016. It is very difficult to compare the statistics of a batter to a pitcher for the MVP race, but in my opinion, it is very obvious that Kershaw deserves this award if he continues at this pace.

Of course there are plenty of deserving bats who will compete for the NL MVP award, including Nolan Arenado, Kris Bryant, Daniel Murphy, Anthony Rizzo, and many more, but Kershaw is putting together one of the most dominant pitching seasons we have seen in the the history of baseball. Please click the link below to see how Kershaw compares to his peers in 2016 and in baseball history:

MLB Trade Rumors: San Francisco Giants Trying To Acquire Ryan Braun

It is no secret that the San Francisco Giants are trying to land an outfielder after losing all-star outfielder, Hunter Pence, for the next few months due to a very severe hamstring injury. As of right now, the Giants have filled the outfield with Gregor Blanco, Denard Span, Jarrett Parker, and Mac Williamson. As you can imagine, this outfield is not doing the trick considering Span is only outfielder with an on base percentage higher than .310 this season.

The Giants currently have a five game lead in the National League West, but over the last seven games, their offense is ranked last in OBP, 28th in runs scored, and dead last in slugging. If the Giants want to keep this lead in their division, they need to find a way to add an elite bat to their lineup during Pence’s absence.

Daily Fantasy MLB DFS Picks For DraftKings 6/14/16

P- Madison Bumgarner (vs. Milwaukee Brewers): $13,800. Bumgarner is the top pitcher on the slate for Tuesday and for good reason. First of all, he is facing the 21st ranked offense of the Brewers. Second, he is 7-2 this season, with a 1.88 ERA, and 99 strikeouts in 86 innings pitched. Third, he is pitching in his home park. Fourth, he will probably hit a home run to bolster his lead at some point in the game. This guy can do it all.

P- Brandon Finnegan (vs. Atlanta Braves): $8,100. Finnegan has been on a roll as of late. In hist past four starts, he has thrown at least 6.1 innings in each start. He now has seven quality starts in his 13 total outings this season. He will be facing one of the worst offenses in baseball on Tuesday, so this shouldn’t pose a threat to Finnegan’s hot streak.

Daily Fantasy MLB DFS Picks For DraftKings 6/13/16

P- Jerad Eickhoff (vs. Toronto Blue Jays): $8,700. Over his last five starts, Eickoff owns a 2.76 ERA. He is facing a struggling Blue Jays’ offense on Monday. Over the last seven games, the Blue Jays are batting only .221. In 12 starts this year, Eickhoff has a 3.68 ERA, 62 strikeouts, and 15 walks in 73.1 innings pitched.

P- Zack Greinke (vs. Los Angeles Dodgers): $11,200. Greinke will be facing his old team on Monday. In only 42 career at bats against Greinke, the Dodgers’ lineup is batting .238, with 9 strikeouts, and a .273 OBP. Over the last seven days, the Los Angeles Dodgers are only batting .208, which is ranked 29th in Major League Baseball.

Daily Fantasy MLB DFS Picks For DraftKings 6/12/16

P- Steven Matz (vs. Milwaukee Brewers): $10,700. Earlier this season, Matz dominated the Brewers over seven innings, giving up two runs, and striking out eight. He lost his first start in eight starts this week, so he should be hungry to get back to his winning ways against a very average team.

P- Cole Hamels (vs. Seattle Mariners): $8,500. Hamels has already made one start against the Mariners this year and it was a good one. In seven innings, he only gave up two runs, while striking out eight. The Mariners offense has been very good recently, but a veteran pitcher like Hamels should be able to shut them down. At only $8,500, Hamels could be a steal.

Daily Fantasy MLB DFS Picks For DraftKings 6/11/16

P- Chris Archer (vs. Houston Astros): $10,400. I’m taking a pretty big risk here, but Archer’s strikeout ability and the Astros free swinging bats could be a great combination for this matchup. In Archer’s last start, he struck out 12 batters in six innings pitched, so hopefully he can transfer this success to Saturday. In 64 career at bats against Archer, the Astros’ lineup is batting .172, with only two XBH, 22 strikeouts, and a .229 OBP. The Houston Astros are currently ranked last overall in strikeouts, with 605 strikeouts, which is 40 more than the second place team.

P- Eduardo Rodriguez (vs. Minnesota Twins): $7,100. E-Rod has only had two starts since returning from an injury, but they have been against some very difficult offenses, the Baltimore Orioles and the Toronto Blue Jays. He will face a much easier offense on Saturday, the Minnesota Twins. In his one career start against the Twins, the Twins recorded 24 at bats, with only one run, seven strikeouts, and a .125 BA. The Twins offense is currently ranked 26th overall in runs, 19th overall in batting average, and 22nd in on base percentage.

P- Clayton Kershaw (vs. San Francisco Giants): $13,900. In 237 career at bats against Kershaw, the Giants’ offense is batting .148, with 76 strikeouts, and only 10 walks, with a .189 OBP. Kershaw has been absolutely dominant all year long and regardless of his high price, he is a must start. In 12 starts, he is 8-1, with a 1.46 ERA, 54 hits against, 109 strikeouts, and only 6 walks in 92.2 innings pitched.

P- Ian Kennedy (vs. Chicago White Sox): $9,300. In 78 career at bats against Kennedy, the White Sox’ offense is batting .244, with 20 strikeouts, five RBIs, and a .272 OBP. The White Sox offense has also struggled quite a bit recently. In the past seven days, the White Sox rank 28th in runs scored (20), 27th in batting average (.212), and 21st in OBP (.300).

Biggest Day One Steal Of The MLB Draft

There were many people who fell in the draft on day one, but A.J. Puk might have been the biggest steal of them all. Many believed Puk would go 1st overall to the Philadelphia Phillies, but instead he slipped to 6th overall to the Oakland Athletics. He has the tangible and intangible assets to be a star in Major League Baseball.

Puk has the body and and potential of a frontline starter. He stands 6’7 and weighs 230 lbs. This left-handed pitcher from the University of Florida has gained a lot of attention since he was a freshman. He has a plus-plus fastball and his secondary pitches all have the potential to be above average.

Daily Fantasy MLB DFS Picks For DraftKings 6/9/16

P- Gio Gonzalez (vs. Chicago White Sox): $8,900. In 76 career at bats against Gonzalez, the White Sox are batting a cool .197, with one home run, three RBIs, 15 strikeouts, and a .291 OBP. The White Sox offense has struggled recently. In their last seven games, the White Sox are ranked 27th in runs scored (22), 25th in batting average (.210), and 22nd in on base percentage (.303).

Based on the Sox recent struggles and Gio’s career success, this should be a good matchup on Thursday. There is a really good chance of rain for this game tomorrow, so check the weather forecast prior to his start. If the game does get postponed, check the “other hot starts” for other options.

P- Bartolo Colon (vs. Milwaukee Brewers): $6,900. The pitching match-ups are very limited on Thursday because there are only nine games being played. Colon has been very solid all year, but he won’t put up elite points. Luckily, he is playing the 24th ranked offense in baseball.

P- Yu Darvish (vs. Houston Astros): $11,000. Darvish won’t go incredibly deep into games, but that is okay because of his elite strikeout rates. He is facing the Houston Astros on Wednesday, whom have the worst strikeout rate in baseball. In Darvish’s first two starts since returning from Tommy John Surgery, he owns a 2-0 record, 3.38 ERA, and 12 strikeouts in 10.2 innings pitched.

P- Archie Bradley (vs. Tampa Bay Rays): $7,700. Bradley is coming off one of his best starts in his career last week. In six innings pitched against a dangerous Chicago Cubs offense, he have up four hits, one earned run, three walks, and 10 strikeouts. Hopefully Bradley can carry over that success to Wednesday when he faces a much easier opponent.

The Time Has Finally Come… Jameson Taillon To Be Called Up To The Big Leagues

You read that correctly folks, Pirates’ right-handed pitching prospect, Jameson Taillon, is finally getting called up! As many of you well know, I am a huge fan of this pitcher. He has the potential to be a frontline starter in the Pirates rotation in the future and he could be there faster than you think.

Taillon has had a very difficult road to the major leagues. He was drafted in the first round (second overall) by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2010. From 2011 to 2013, he shot up the organization and was on the fast track to a promotion to the big league team. Unfortunately, he was sidelined in 2014 after receiving Tommy John Surgery.

P- Jacob deGrom (vs. Pittsburgh Pirates): $9,500. In the last seven games, the Pirates offense is only batting .230, which is ranked 22nd in Major League Baseball. While the Pirates do have a solid lineup, an elite arm like deGrom should be able to handle them. At only $9,500, deGrom could be a steal.

P- Joe Ross (vs. Chicago White Sox): $9,700. In the past seven games, the White Sox offense has been absolutely brutal. They are batting 202, which is the third worst in baseball. They have also only scored 21 runs, which is the second worst in baseball. Joe Ross has the ability to put up huge strikeout numbers and really dominate a struggling team such as the White Sox.

James Shields To Be Traded In The Next 24 Hours, But To Which Team?

Well folks, we could have the first big trade of the 2016 season within the next 24 hours. The San Diego Padres are looking to deal right-handed pitcher, James Shields, as soon as they can. As of right now, it is reported that there are a few teams interested in Shields, but the Chicago White Sox are the front runners.

The White Sox could use another arm in their rotation. Currently, their rotation has four very solid starters, but the fifth starter has brought about many questions. Shields has struggled in 2016, but if he can turn it around, everyone knows how good he can really be.

If the White Sox were to land Shields, their rotation would include Chris SaleJose QuintanaCarlos RodonMat Latos, and James Shields.  Trading for Shields could not only bolster their rotation, but it would also bring about a pitcher who goes deep into games to give their bullpen a rest.

Daily Fantasy MLB DFS Picks For DraftKings 6/5/16

Typically I post a lineup that fits the cash limits of DraftKings, but I will be on a plane to Los Angeles today (going to see Clayton Kershaw pitch!), so I have decided to post an article with multiple options.

P- Jose Fernandez (vs. Miami Marlins): Fernandez has been on fire recently. So far in 2016, he has thrown 67.2 innings, with an 8-2 record, 2.53 ERA, 50 hits against, 96 strikeouts, and 25 walks. The Mets are currently ranked 27th overall in run production, so Fernandez shouldn’t have any problems shutting down their offense.

P- Corey Kluber (vs. Kansas City Royals): In 216 career at bats against Kluber, the Royals’ lineup is batting .218, with four home runs, 22 RBIs, 52 strikeouts, and a .245 OBP. Kluber did struggle in his last start (7 IP, 6 ER, 6 Ks), but prior to that start, he had two quality starts. Based on his past success against the Royals, he could be a very solid option on Sunday.

Daily Fantasy MLB DFS Picks For DraftKings 6/4/16

P- Clayton Kershaw (vs. Atlanta Braves): $14,100. I don’t care how expensive Kershaw is, he is a must start against one of the worst offenses in baseball. In 104 career at bats against Kershaw, the Braves’ offense is batting .240, with 35 strikeouts, and a .288 OBP.

Kershaw is currently on pace for one of the best seasons in baseball by a pitcher in a long time. In his 86.2 innings pitched in 2016, he owns a 7-1 record, 1.56 ERA, 51 hits against, 105 strikeouts, and only 5 walks.

P- Bartolo Colon (vs. Miami Marlins): $7,000. In 262 career at bats, the Marlins’ offense is batting .279 with a .287 OBP. In his last 10 starts, Colon has given up more than three runs in only one of those starts. He won’t put up elite numbers, but he is a very viable option for solid statistics.
