Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (May 25th) – Updated Yearly “WOB” Standings
Josh Donaldson got on base 5 times with a homer, three other hits and a walk, scored twice and drove in two as the A’s won another slug fest in Houston, 11-5.
Jake Peavy pitched a complete game victory, letting up only 6 hits. He lost his bid for a shutout when he let up a game tying homer to Derek Dietrich. But Connor Gillaspie’s walk off hit gave Peavy and the White Sox a 2-1 victory over the Marlins.
Mike Minor pitched 7 1/3 shutout innings, letting up just 3 hits and striking out 10. He also went 2-4 at the plate, hitting a 2 out 2 run homer that helped Atlanta beat the Mets, 6-0.
And Angel Pagan helped wipe away a day full of frustrations and bad calls against the Giants with a 2 run, 1 out, walk off come from behind 10th inning inside the park home run. He went 2-6 as the Giants shocked the Rockies by a final of 6-5.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (May 22nd) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings
Jose Bautista went 4-4 with 2 homers and drove in all four of Toronto’s runs, including a game tying shot in the 9th and a walk off hit in the 10th as the Blue Jays beat the Rays 4-3 in 10.
C. J. Wilson went 8 strong, letting up only one run and striking out 10 as the Angels beat the Mariners, 7-1.
Carlos Gonzalez homered, hit an RBI triple then scored on a wild pitch as the Rockies beat the Diamondbacks, 4-1.
And Francisco Liriano pitched 7 shutout innings as the Pirates beat the Cubs 1-0.
They all owned baseball on May 22nd, 2013.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (May 21st) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

Max Scherzer pitched 8 strong against the first place Indians, striking out 7 and walking 1 as the Tigers pulled a game closer, winning 5-1.
Gregor Blanco stole a base and scored the first and then hit the 2 out, 2 strike bottom of the 9th game tying triple that set up the dramatic 4-2 Giants win over the Nationals.
Adam Wainwright pitched 7 1/3 innings, letting up only 4 hits and one walk as the Cardinals manhandled the Padres, 10-2.
And while it was a hard decision, I guess Mike Trout had an OK day. He went 4-5 with a single, a double, a triple and a homer, and that would be the cycle. He also drove in 5 runs and stole a base. I guess that is a good enough day to own baseball.

Miguel Cabrera has hit 332 HRs, 398 Doubles and 13 Triples in his 11th year in the Major Leagues. With 1170 RBI, and just barely being 30 Years of age, the man has a serious chance to chase the ALL – Time RBI record of 2297 By Hank Aaron. After his 3 HR night on Saturday, he has a 2013 – 3 Slash of .387/.457/1.116 (all lead the AL). He has added 11 HRs (tied for 2nd) and 47 RBI (1st in the MLB). He could challenge a 2nd straight Triple Crown in 2013. Something that hasn’t happened since Honus Wagner in the 1920’s.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday ( May 13th) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings
Justin Upton haunted his old team, the Arizona Diamondbacks, with a 4-5 performance including a double and a massive two run homer to center field as the Braves won 10-1.
Travis Wood pitched seven shutout innings against the Rockies and collected a pair of hits including and RBI double as the Cubs pounded Colorado, 9-1.
Justin Masterson pitched a masterful complete game shutout of the Yankees, letting up only 4 hits as the Indians won by the narrowest of margins, 1-0.
And Aaron Hicks not only hit two homers for the Twins in their 10-3 victory over the White Sox, but he stole Adam Dunn‘s home run with his glove. So as far as the Twins were concerned he was +3 in home runs, adding two and removing one.

Matt Harvey with his stellar outings so far this season – may have just become the New York Mets “ace”. Harvey is now 4-0 with a 1.66 ERA. The time has come for the 1sy May Power Rankings. There will be one each for May, June, July, August, September – and then a special playoff edition Power Rankings will be done in October.
I will not do a weekly Power Rankings during this weeks, because in essence, these are the weekly rankings done on a much larger scale.
These Reports are done with a heavy thought to how the teams project by the end of the season – along with how the clubs have fared so far.

Bryce Harper continued his torrent pace as the Nationals once again beat the Cincinnati Reds.
Travis Wood shut down the Marlins lineup giving the Cubs a rare series win.

The Cubs final payroll from 2012 was just north of $107 Million, and, over the winter, President of Baseball Operations Theo Esptein and GM Jed Hoyer added plenty of pitching depth to the 2013 team.

Only the Houston Astros stood between the Chicago Cubs and last place in the NL Central in 2012. The Cubs lost 101 games – their most losses since 1966, when the team went 51-103 — and finished with the second worst record in baseball. Under President of Baseball Operations Theo Epstein, the Cubs went backwards from the year before, losing 10 more games than in 2011.
Epstein continues to rebuild the Cubs’ farm system, and the organization boasts four top prospects – Shortstop Javier Baez, Outfielder Albert Almora, Outfielder Jorge Soler and Relief Pitcher Arodys Vizcaino — all of whom are represented in the Top 100 Prospects of Baseball America and Baseball Prospectus. Over the winter, the Cubs bolstered their Starting Pitching staff, adding Starters Edwin Jackson, Scott Feldman, Scott Baker and Carlos Villanueva.

Needless to say, it has been a dismal last few years for the Chicago Cubs. The last time they made the playoffs, it was 2008 and they were swept in the NLDS. They have not won a World Series since 1908 and do not look like they will be ending that drought anytime soon. The Cubs had a horrible 2012 in which they went 61-101. The record basically tells the story. The Cubs ended up trading Ryan Dempster, a fixture in the Cubs’ pitching staff for the past decade converting from a closer to a starter mid-tenure. In this feature, I will cover what’s ahead for this storied franchise.
For 2013, the Cubs really have not made any improvements. So far, their big offseason signing has been Nate Schierholtz, who was traded from the Giants to the Phillies as part of a package for Hunter Pence. Schierholtz will be joined in the outfield by Brett Jackson, a highly regarded prospect, and Alfonso Soriano. This outfield is not exactly a marquee group, but it will get the job done. Soriano should continue to provide some pop as he has hit 82 HRs in the past three years combined, and Brett Jackson should get on base and drive in runs with his gap-to-gap power.
