Top Prospects Of The Day: Corey Ray Finally Hits Big
Today’s top prospects looks into Corey Ray, Nick Senzel, Luis Ortiz, Jose De Leon. Every name on today’s list is near the top of the organizational top prospect list and has a significant chance of making an MLB impact.
Corey Ray
3-3, 1 2B, 2 BB, 2 RBI
One of the Brewers’ top prospects, and their first-round selection in the most recent draft, Corey Ray, has gotten off to a sluggish start in his High-A home in Carolina this year. Injuries had much to do with this after he missed the first few weeks of the season, but it’s evident Ray’s climbing back into the minds of the folks who saw four- or even five-tool potential here.
On Tuesday night, Ray had one of his best games of the young season. No one on the Down East Wood Ducks staff was able to get Ray out. He finished the game 3 for 3, recorded his 11th double of the year, and walked two other times. It was encouraging to see his plate discipline on display, too. In the early going, Ray’s striking out in nearly 30 percent of his plate appearances – and has struck out at least twice in five of his last 10 games.
Because of his gifted speed, he’s carrying a contact-first approach to the plate that many evaluators believe is some of the reason as to why Ray is swinging and missing too often. This would lend optimists hope that, if Ray is willing to lessen that approach, he can take more pitches and sit on those he can drive, tapping into more power that he appears to be capable of.

Top Prospects Of The Day: Mitchell White Continues His Dominance
Last nights prospects saw emerging superstars burst through the night. All of Mitchell White, Dustin Fowler, and Shed Long were all on the breakout short list coming into the year and all have been delivering at a very high level.
Mitchell White
7 Innings Pitched – 3 Hits – 1 Earned Run – 8 Strike Outs
White has been on a blistering path to be one of the nation’s top prospects. Outings such as this only help that agenda logging more strikeouts than innings while reducing the batters on the base path. White ultimate was leading the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes over the Visalia Rawhide in a 2-1 win on Monday. White started out the game by grounding out the first five batters with the initial three going to first baseman Ibandel Isabel.
White had Tommy John surgery back in high school, but he has fully recovered from it and is throwing just as hard as he was pre-surgery. White has very good stuff and it could carry him up the promotion ladder of the minor leagues. He has a mid-90s fastball, which probably isn’t his best pitch even though it does have some good movement in addition to the velocity. His best pitch may be his cutter that sits in the high-80s and can make hitters look silly at times. His third pitch is a curveball which is still improving and he has a changeup, but that pitch is still in development so to speak. White has a good build, standing at 6’4 and just over 200 lbs, which is exactly what you want in a starting pitcher. His command has been improving with each season he puts the surgery behind him and right now the command would be graded at about average.
White is currently listed as the Dodgers #13 prospect but that number appears to be incredibly too low for his level of talent. White will easily end the year inside the top 100 prospects in baseball with an outside chance of reaching the top 30.

Top Prospects of the Weekend: Brendan Rodgers Has Big Day At Plate
This weekend saw some good performances by all different types of prospects. Brendan Rodgers, the Rockies’ top prospect, had a fantastic day at the plate on Sunday. Unheralded prospects Chance Adams and Lucas Sims both had great outings. Kyle Lloyd made history on Saturday and Tony Kemp had a solid day at the plate.
Brendan Rodgers
4 at-bats-4 hits-3 runs-2 RBI-1 Home Run
Brendan Rodgers, the Rockies top prospect, continued raking at High-A on Sunday. Rodgers batting average sits at .418 after a 4 hit day on Sunday. Rodgers got off to an exciting start in his first at-bat, hitting a triple off of Logan Shore. Rodgers would come across to score when the next batter grounded out. Rodgers’ next at-bat would come in the 3rd inning and he would single up the middle. He would tally another single in the 5th inning, this time into left field. Rodgers would have a productive at-bat in the 6th inning, hitting a sac fly to right field. In Rodgers’ final at-bat, the big hit would come, a home run to centerfield, capping a big day at the plate for Rodgers.
As mentioned before, Rodgers is hitting at a .418 clip to start 2017 in High-A. The 3rd overall pick by the Rockies in the 2015 draft, Rodgers has had eyes on him throughout his career and thus far is living up to the hype. Last year he spent the entire season in the Sally league and hit 19 home runs, showcasing his power. Rodgers’ power has yet to come to fruition in High-A, only hitting 3 so far, including the one he hit on Sunday. Perhaps the 19 home runs could be attributed to playing in hitter friendly Asheville last season, but Rodgers has power no matter what park he is in. Rodgers probably can’t wait to hit in Coors Field, but he will probably have to wait at least until late 2018 at best.

Pitchers:
Cash Pitchers

Chris Archer- We suggested Archer 5 days ago against the reeling Royals and he didn’t disappoint (8 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 11 Ks). He comes into tonight’s match-up against a hot-hitting Indians team but he’s been able to hold them pretty well in his career.
Career vs Current Indians Roster
AVG: 0.238 [25 for 105], BABIP: 0.235, K%: 16.0, BB%: 10.1

Carlos Carrasco- The pitching slate tonight is quite possibly the worst one I’ve seen all season so far. These first two pitchers are facing each other but Carrasco has had great numbers against the Rays and they are definitely a team that can strike out 8+ times a game. Carrasco is coming into this match-up with a 4-2 record, 1.86 ERA, 0.77 WHIP and 46 Ks. He’s also coming off back to back Wins with 13 IP and 12 Ks.
Career vs Current Rays Roster

Zack Wheeler- This season has been very iffy with taking Mets’ pitchers but I like him in this match-up against the D-Backs. The only problem is it is at Chase Field. He’s actually been able to hold them to a .188 anda 21.1 K% and only a 7.9 BB%.

Ed Scott, Pioneering Scout for the Boston Red Sox
Major League Baseball was segregated until 1947, when Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier by joining the Brooklyn Dodgers. Despite that important first step, the trail blazing athlete was not a cure-all and the game only gradually and begrudgingly trudged towards inclusion. The Boston Red Sox were the last big league franchise to integrate, with backup infielder Pumpsie Green’s appearance on their 1959 roster making them the final team to field a black player. The franchise long battled a wretched reputation when it came to race (which persists to this day), and it might have been even worse if it weren’t for the work of Ed Scott.

Daily Matchups for 5/13/2017
Pitchers:
Cash Pitchers

Luis Severino- Whatever it was this off-season that Severino did, it has been absolutely amazing to see this transformation from last year to this year. He is coming into this match-up with the Astros with a 2-2 record, 3.40 ERA, .91 WHIP. He’s coming off a terrific performance against the Cubs where he pitched 7 innings of 4 hit ball allowing 1 ER and 9 Ks. The only thing we have to look out for today is the weather as it appears that rain is very likely.
Career vs Current Astros Roster
AVG: 0.188 [3 for 16], BABIP: 0.231, K%: 16.7, BB%: 5.6
FIP: 2.47 Groundout: 5 Strikeout: 3Single: 2 Pop Out: 2 Flyout: 2Double: 1 Hit By Pitch: 1 Walk: 1Grounded Into DP: 1

Chris Sale- If there was ever a definition of a pitcher putting the team on his back, it’s this guy right here. Sale has given every thing he has for the Red Sox. Sale has a 3-2 record but an amazing 1.92 ERA with that record. You’d think it would be higher than that but he’s losing games by 1 or 2 runs too often. He’s coming off back to back wins against both BAL and MIN where he has a combined 14 IP and 21 Ks. We definitely expect Sale to mirror his recent results against a Tampa Bay team that he has held to 17 hits in 114 ABs (.149 BA) with 43 Ks and a 34.1 K% to only a 7.9 W%.
Career vs Current Rays Roster
AVG: 0.149 [17 for 114], BABIP: 0.236, K%: 34.1, BB%: 7.9
FIP: 1.46 Strikeout: 43 Groundout: 24 Single: 15Flyout: 12 Walk: 10 Pop Out: 8 Lineout: 6 Double: 2Forceout: 1 Sac Bunt: 1 Grounded Into DP: 1 Double Play: 1 Field Error: 1 Hit By Pitch: 1

Jon Lester- It’s very true that the Cubs are underperforming so far this season as they sit in 4th place, but it’s not due to this guy. He has been his normal self coming into today’s match-up. Lester comes in with a 1-1 record, 3.27 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, and 40 Ks. He’s coming off a great performance against the Yankees where he pitched 7 strong innings of 3 hits, 2 runs, 1 ER and 9 Ks. Most nights that would be enough but remember, this was the game I was supposed to be at and it was the 18 inning affair. He gets a great match-up against the Cardinals who he has dominated allowing only 27 hits in 150 ABs (.180 BA) with a 29.1 K% to only 6.7 BB% and 48 Ks. Look for this to be a great afternoon tilt against Michael Wacha.
Career vs Current Cardinals Roster
AVG: 0.180 [27 for 150], BABIP: 0.240, K%: 29.1, BB%: 6.7
FIP: 2.30 Strikeout: 48 Groundout: 37 Flyout: 21Single: 18 Walk: 11 Lineout: 10 Double: 6 Pop Out: 4Sac Fly: 3 Home Run: 2 Grounded Into DP: 1Forceout: 1 Bunt Groundout: 1 Sac Bunt: 1 Triple: 1

Classic Matchups – Milwaukee vs. New York on April 8, 1979
The Milwaukee Brewers played in the American League East division from 1972-93. In 2017, the Brewers will play many of their old foes from the East in Interleague matchups. Baltimore, Boston, Toronto, and the New York Yankees are all on the schedule this season. To celebrate the glory days of the old AL East, I’ve created a “classic opponents” series of blog posts.
New York was an incredibly tough opponent of those classic Brewers teams. When the two teams met, literally anything could happen from pitcher’s duels to slugfests. With so many classic games to choose from, I selected a great pitching matchup from early 1979 to profile for this blog post.
It was Tommy John’s first game in pinstripes.

Ervin Santana- Santana was never going to hold down that 0.66 ERA but even with him giving up 6 ERs last start against BOS (they won 17-6) he still has a 5-1 record with a 1.72 ERA. Attempting to Figure Out Boston Red Sox Pitcher Joe Kelly
The Boston Red Sox’s confounding power right-handed pitcher Joe Kelly is in his fourth season with the team. While boasting a stellar 2.12 ERA in 14 relief appearances, he is walking batters at a high rate and striking out even fewer. What’s the cause of this and what might his future hold? Down On The Farm: Detroit Tigers Minor League Report

Tigers Prospect Christin Stewart Continuing To Mash In 2017
With a month gone in the Minor League season, we’re starting to see stats stabilizing and getting a good look at who’s breaking out for teams and will also take a look at some other notables. Here’s a look around the Tigers affiliates…
Toledo Mud Hens (Triple-A)
We already know about John Hicks and Jim Adduci, with their hot starts and promotions to the big club, but other notable hitters are struggling currently with…
James Loney, added as a nice in-season pick-up to add depth to the MLB club, Loney has played in 16 games and is hitting .229, with a .637 OPS
Remember Alex Presley’s hot spring training, well, he cooled off considerably in Toledo, as he’s hitting .210 with a .468 OPS in 27 games
Then there is Steven Moya who everyone has been waiting on. This has to be it for him with Detroit, as he continues to struggle hitting .162 with a .468 OPS and 26 strike outs in 68 at bats
Starters Buck Farmer and Warwick Saupold are showing success with sub-3.00 ERA’s, however Chad Bell, is off to the best start on the staff, as he’s thrown 21.2 innings so far, with a 1.25 ERA, with just 7 walks and 25 K’s.

Ben Gamel reached base 5 times, homered, drove in 4, scored 3, stole a base and tied the game in the 7th with a double to help the Mariners take a 10-9 slugfest over the Phillies.
Julio Urias threw a no hitter into the 6th and allowed a single hit and 2 walks over 6 1/3 innings. He would not get the decision as the Dodgers walked off against the Pirates in extra innings, 4-3.
Keon Broxton went 3 for 3 with a homer, a stolen base and 4 RBI in the Brewers 11-7 win over the Boston.

Top Prospects Of The Day: Ronald Acuna Hype Train Full Steam Ahead
Tuesday’s top prospects featured big performances from some of baseball’s most highly touted up-and-comers. The recently promoted Ronald Acuna of the Braves was one of the night’s highlights after a big Double-A debut. One of the Mets top prospects, Dominic Smith, bopped his way out of a slump. Wiry Cleveland righty Triston McKenzie struck out a career-high 14 batters. And Angels lefty Nate Smith made his season debut and pitched a steady 5 2/3 scoreless innings, with dreams of a spot in the big league rotation looming ever closer.
Ronald Acuna
3-4, 2 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI
Strikeouts were never exactly a concern for one of the Braves’ top prospects, Ronald Acuna. He’s always demonstrated patience at the plate and has a history of drawing his walks, that’s why his start to his first season of High-A ball was a little surprising. Acuna was striking out over 30 percent of the time while walking less than seven percent of the time; both numbers were far apart from career norms.
That’s why his promotion to Double-A Mississippi was such a surprise. On Tuesday, the Braves decided to let Acuna try his hand at a much tougher level of competition. He didn’t disappoint. Acuna in his Double-A debut belted a two-run home run in his first at-bat. He collected two more hits on the night and made the Braves brass look like geniuses in the very early going.
The aggressive promotion to Double-A was intriguing. Clearly, in the past, Acuna has exemplified proper bat approach and by all accounts appeared to have a great eye, so his walk and strikeout rates in High-A were surely set to normalize soon. One of the game’s best and most under-the-radar prospects is accruing some well-deserved hype after an exciting debut in Double-A.

Ryan Zimmerman Is Leading the League in Just About Everything
One of the great things about baseball is that it’s always full of surprises. We get reminded of this every single year, and while there have been a handful already in 2017, Washington Nationals first baseman Ryan Zimmerman is a perfect example.
Once a cornerstone of the franchise and an annual offensive force earlier in his career, Zimmerman’s production had taken a nosedive over the years. It seemingly came to a head in 2016 when he slashed just .218/.272/.370 in 467 plate appearances, which led to a .277 wOBA, 67 wRC+ and a -1.3 fWAR.
That’s what we’d like to call suboptimal, guys.
It’s easy to think that the front office was concerned about his future production since they signed Adam Lind to a one-year deal on the eve of Spring Training, which many speculated would lead to a platoon at the corner infield spot.
But here we are, about six weeks into the regular season and no platoon has formed at first base. In fact, Zimmerman’s incredible April performance earned him Player of the Month honors.
The domination all over the league leaderboards hasn’t stopped, either. Entering action on Tuesday, check out where Zimmerman ranks in the following 16 categories.
The K-Rod Situation Brings To Light That Al Avila Must Go

I wasn’t truly a fan of it in the first place, but when Al Avila was named General Manager replacing David Dombrowski on August 4th, 2015, I figured he was worth a shot given who he had learned from. That said with the most recent dumpster fire that is known as the Tiger’s bullpen, it’s time for the spotlight to start shining on not only K-Rod and Ausmus, but also Avila. That said, I believe if the Tigers don’t make the playoffs, it’s also time for Al to go in my opinion.
Let’s take a look the major moves that Avila has made in his tenure…
10 Hot Starts in MLB That Aren’t Built to Last
With each big league ballplayer staring down six months of regular season play on Opening Day, every single one of them hopes for a fast start. However, having a strong month or two doesn’t guarantee that those trends and high levels of production will continue through to September.
As we march toward the dog days of summer, it gets harder to use the “small sample size” argument, but there are still certain statistics that need more time to stabilize before putting a whole lot of stock in them.
Some hot starts appear to be legit — like Yonder Alonso turning into a power hitter and Chris Sale getting back to collecting strikeouts — but not all performances are created equally.
Potentially even more important than the numbers displaying a hot start are the underlying stats telling us whether certain trends appear to be sustainable.
The following 10 players have experienced success to start 2017, but landing on this list doesn’t necessarily mean their performance is going to bottom out at some point (some might, though). However, unless some peripheral stats change, it’ll be awfully hard to keep up their current pace.
Classic Matchups – Milwaukee vs. Boston on May 31, 1980
The Milwaukee Brewers played in the American League East division from 1972-93. I’ll be covering great games, opposing teams, and even individual players from the East, particularly from Milwaukee’s golden baseball era of 1978-82.
Boston was a formidable opponent of those classic Brewers teams, with an impressive roster of their own. Both teams had some memorable battles, including a couple of games in 1980 where the Brewers exploded for a truckload of runs.
The Matchup
Both Boston and Milwaukee were chasing New York when they met at Fenway Park on the afternoon of Saturday, May 31, 1980

Ryan Schimpf got on base 3 times, homered and scored a pair to help San Diego top the Rangers, 5-1.
Kevin Gausman threw 7 strong innings, allowing 2 runs while striking out 8 Washington batters and getting the 6-4 decision for Baltimore.
Alex Wood struck out 11 Pirates batters while throwing 5 innings of 2 hit shutout ball in the Dodgers 12-1 blowout.
