Down On The Farm: Detroit Tigers Minor League Report

Stewart, Christin2.jpg

Tigers Prospect Christin Stewart Continuing To Mash In 2017

With a month gone in the Minor League season, we’re starting to see stats stabilizing and getting a good look at who’s breaking out for teams and will also take a look at some other notables.  Here’s a look around the Tigers affiliates…

Toledo Mud Hens (Triple-A)

We already know about John Hicks and Jim Adduci, with their hot starts and promotions to the big club, but other notable hitters are struggling currently with…

James Loney, added as a nice in-season pick-up to add depth to the MLB club, Loney has played in 16 games and is hitting .229, with a .637 OPS

Remember Alex Presley’s hot spring training, well, he cooled off considerably in Toledo, as he’s hitting .210 with a .468 OPS in 27 games

Then there is Steven Moya who everyone has been waiting on.  This has to be it for him with Detroit, as he continues to struggle hitting .162 with a .468 OPS and 26 strike outs in 68 at bats

Starters Buck Farmer and Warwick Saupold are showing success with sub-3.00 ERA’s, however Chad Bell, is off to the best start on the staff, as he’s thrown 21.2 innings so far, with a 1.25 ERA, with just 7 walks and 25 K’s.

Ben Gamel reached base 5 times, homered, drove in 4, scored 3, stole a base and tied the game in the 7th with a double to help the Mariners take a 10-9 slugfest over the Phillies.

Julio Urias threw a no hitter into the 6th and allowed a single hit and 2 walks over 6 1/3 innings. He would not get the decision as the Dodgers walked off against the Pirates in extra innings, 4-3.

Keon Broxton went 3 for 3 with a homer, a stolen base and 4 RBI in the Brewers 11-7 win over the Boston.

Top Prospects Of The Day: Ronald Acuna Hype Train Full Steam Ahead

Tuesday’s top prospects featured big performances from some of baseball’s most highly touted up-and-comers. The recently promoted Ronald Acuna of the Braves was one of the night’s highlights after a big Double-A debut. One of the Mets top prospects, Dominic Smith, bopped his way out of a slump. Wiry Cleveland righty Triston McKenzie struck out a career-high 14 batters. And Angels lefty Nate Smith made his season debut and pitched a steady 5 2/3 scoreless innings, with dreams of a spot in the big league rotation looming ever closer.

Ronald Acuna

3-4, 2 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI

Strikeouts were never exactly a concern for one of the Braves’ top prospects, Ronald Acuna. He’s always demonstrated patience at the plate and has a history of drawing his walks, that’s why his start to his first season of High-A ball was a little surprising. Acuna was striking out over 30 percent of the time while walking less than seven percent of the time; both numbers were far apart from career norms.

That’s why his promotion to Double-A Mississippi was such a surprise. On Tuesday, the Braves decided to let Acuna try his hand at a much tougher level of competition. He didn’t disappoint. Acuna in his Double-A debut belted a two-run home run in his first at-bat. He collected two more hits on the night and made the Braves brass look like geniuses in the very early going.

The aggressive promotion to Double-A was intriguing. Clearly, in the past, Acuna has exemplified proper bat approach and by all accounts appeared to have a great eye, so his walk and strikeout rates in High-A were surely set to normalize soon. One of the game’s best and most under-the-radar prospects is accruing some well-deserved hype after an exciting debut in Double-A.

Ryan Zimmerman Is Leading the League in Just About Everything

One of the great things about baseball is that it’s always full of surprises. We get reminded of this every single year, and while there have been a handful already in 2017, Washington Nationals first baseman Ryan Zimmerman is a perfect example.

Once a cornerstone of the franchise and an annual offensive force earlier in his career, Zimmerman’s production had taken a nosedive over the years. It seemingly came to a head in 2016 when he slashed just .218/.272/.370 in 467 plate appearances, which led to a .277 wOBA, 67 wRC+ and a -1.3 fWAR.

That’s what we’d like to call suboptimal, guys.

It’s easy to think that the front office was concerned about his future production since they signed Adam Lind to a one-year deal on the eve of Spring Training, which many speculated would lead to a platoon at the corner infield spot.

But here we are, about six weeks into the regular season and no platoon has formed at first base. In fact, Zimmerman’s incredible April performance earned him Player of the Month honors.

The domination all over the league leaderboards hasn’t stopped, either. Entering action on Tuesday, check out where Zimmerman ranks in the following 16 categories.

The K-Rod Situation Brings To Light That Al Avila Must Go

Avila, Al.jpg

I wasn’t truly a fan of it in the first place, but when Al Avila was named General Manager replacing David Dombrowski on August 4th, 2015, I figured he was worth a shot given who he had learned from.   That said with the most recent dumpster fire that is known as the Tiger’s bullpen, it’s time for the spotlight to start shining on not only K-Rod and Ausmus, but also Avila.  That said, I believe if the Tigers don’t make the playoffs, it’s also time for Al to go in my opinion.

Let’s take a look the major moves that Avila has made in his tenure…

10 Hot Starts in MLB That Aren’t Built to Last

With each big league ballplayer staring down six months of regular season play on Opening Day, every single one of them hopes for a fast start. However, having a strong month or two doesn’t guarantee that those trends and high levels of production will continue through to September.

As we march toward the dog days of summer, it gets harder to use the “small sample size” argument, but there are still certain statistics that need more time to stabilize before putting a whole lot of stock in them.

Some hot starts appear to be legit — like Yonder Alonso turning into a power hitter and Chris Sale getting back to collecting strikeouts — but not all performances are created equally.

Potentially even more important than the numbers displaying a hot start are the underlying stats telling us whether certain trends appear to be sustainable.

The following 10 players have experienced success to start 2017, but landing on this list doesn’t necessarily mean their performance is going to bottom out at some point (some might, though). However, unless some peripheral stats change, it’ll be awfully hard to keep up their current pace.

Classic Matchups – Milwaukee vs. Boston on May 31, 1980

The Milwaukee Brewers played in the American League East division from 1972-93. In 2017, the Brewers will play many of their old foes from the East in Interleague matchups.  Baltimore, Boston, Toronto, and the New York Yankees are all on the schedule this season.  To celebrate the glory days of the old AL East, I’ve created a “classic opponents” series of blog posts.  I’ll be covering great games, opposing teams, and even individual players from the East, particularly from Milwaukee’s golden baseball era of 1978-82.

Boston was a formidable opponent of those classic Brewers teams, with an impressive roster of their own.  Both teams had some memorable battles, including a couple of games in 1980 where the Brewers exploded for a truckload of runs.

The Matchup

Both Boston and Milwaukee were chasing New York when they met at Fenway Park on the afternoon of Saturday, May 31, 1980

Macho Row: The 1993 Phillies and Baseball’s Unwritten Code- A Review

Although they lost the World Series to the Toronto Blue Jays in dramatic fashion, the 1993 Philadelphia Phillies were one of the most iconic teams in baseball history. With a roster comprised of long-haired, grubby outcasts, they captivated the country once they started winning and proved they were no joke. However, they were not built to last and were gone as quickly as they arrived (The Phillies wouldn’t have another winning season until 2001) —with many of their key players never approaching the same level of effectiveness during the remainder of their careers. William C. Kashatus’ Macho Row: The 1993 Phillies and Baseball’s Unwritten Code (University of Nebraska Press, 2017) takes an in depth look at this motley crew and how they impacted the baseball scene for one fleeting season.

Tigers and Astros Are Taking Care of Business Early This Year

There are so many things that go on during the course of a 162-game season that it’s usually difficult to pinpoint one situation as the difference maker.

A turning point? Yea, that works, but saying one thing in particular was the reason behind a certain team living or not living up to expectations is hard. After all, baseball involves a ton of variables on any given night.

However, upon looking back on 2016, there’s a good chance the Detroit Tigers and Houston Astros wondered what could’ve been if they didn’t struggle so mightily against the Cleveland Indians and Texas Rangers, respectively.

Up to this point in the season, though, the narrative has been flipped on its head.

6 innings pitched-3 hits-0 Runs Allowed-11 strikeouts

Kolby Allard was dominant once again on Thursday night, lowering his season ERA in Double-A to 1.36. Allard keeps on showcasing his talent and it doesn’t matter what level it is, he has looked untouchable. Facing another top prospect in Michael Kopech, Allard brought his A game and it paid dividends. Allard would strike out 2 batters in each of the first 2 innings and would continue this dominance throughout the game. He did not get into much trouble the entire game, spreading out 3 singles through the 6 frames, only allowing 1 at most in an inning. Allard would leave the game after 6, but not after striking out 11 batters, tying his career high. Allard’s pitch count was 95 when he left the game.

Allard is one of the Brave’s top pitching prospects and made the jump directly from Low-A to Double-A this season and to Allard there doesn’t seem to be a difference between the levels. He is just as dominant this year as he was last year in Low-A. Allard keeps upping the ante and putting out better performance after better performance.

Adam Jones Incident Provides Unfortunate and Unique Opportunity for the Boston Red Sox

Baltimore Orioles star slugger Adam Jones divulged after yesterday’s game against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park that he was on the receiving end of racial taunts from fans in the stands. The Red Sox swiftly made a public apology and are reportedly considering issuing lifetime bans for fans who are caught perpetrating such behavior in the future, but reaction needs to be stronger and more widespread.

Jose Reyes Is Using the Whole Field Again

The 2017 MLB regular season hasn’t exactly started how the New York Mets envisioned it. Unless they anticipated an 11-14 record and multiple injuries to impact players, that is.

One of the biggest disappointments throughout the first few weeks was Jose Reyes‘ performance at the plate. An integral part of the Mets’ offense at the top of their lineup, manager Terry Collins was forced to move his third baseman to the bottom third because he was in such a deep slump.

How bad was it, exactly? On April 23rd, he sported an uninspiring .104/.189/.134 triple slash with a .158 wOBA and a wRC+ of -3 (and no, that’s not a typo).

While he hasn’t been installed back into the top of the lineup just yet — Michael Conforto is doing quite fine at the moment — Reyes has caught fire after a couple days away from the field. Since April 26th, the veteran is slashing .391/.462/.913 with a .559 wOBA and a wRC+ of 252.

What’s been the cause of him busting out of his slump? The evidence is pretty clear in his batted-ball profile.

Top Prospects of the Day: Chance Adams Continues To Thrive in Double A

There were some nice pitching performances across all levels Monday night, but Chance Adams’ continued domination over his Double-A competition stood out most. Royals top prospect Josh Staumont also found his way back onto our daily lists because he recorded 12 more strikeouts in a single outing yesterday and was throwing more strikes than ever. Offensively, Yandy Diaz and Magneuris Sierra each had themselves big days at the plate and are helping skeptics believe they’re turning corners in their own respective ways.

Chance Adams

6 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 3 BB, 5 K

This is Chance Adams’ second full season as a starter and the results do not vary, they’re just dominant. Through six innings of work on Monday night, Adams allowed just two hits and no runs to the Harrisburg Senators. He did walk three but struck out five over that span, too. It’s not unlike Adams to walk his fair share of opposition, and his three walks Monday aren’t a surprise, but it’s easier to brush them aside when he effortlessly forces soft contact with a solid mid-90s fastball that can touch 97 mph at times and a slider that moves plenty from side to side in the mid-80s.

In addition to Adams’ fastball-slider combo, he nicely rounds out his repertoire as a starting pitching candidate for the Yankees by mixing in an average changeup and curveball that’s under construction.

Adams is generally regarded as a top 10 prospect in this deep Yankees farm system, and is featured at No. 9 on our own list. This season so far, Adams is mowing down his Double-A competition and at this rate he might warrant an end-of-the-year promotion to Scranton.

Tyler Collins reached base 3 times, homered and drove in 3 as the Tigers clobbered division rival Cleveland, 7-1.

Marco Estrada threw 7 strong innings, allowing 1 run and kept the Yankees from the big rally as Toronto won 7-1.

Jonathan Villar went 2 for 3 with a homer and 3 RBI to help the Brewers get past St. Louis, 7-5.

Amir Garrett gave up just 2 hits and 2 runs over 7 solid innings. He did not get the decision but helped set up the Reds 4-3 extra innings victory over Pittsburgh.
