Boston Red Sox Ending 2016 Regular Season on Many High Notes

The Boston Red Sox have put their fans in a glass case of emotions this year. The time is quickly counting down on the illustrious career of beloved slugger David Ortiz. Additionally, even though they are currently in first place in the American League East, the team is still fighting for their playoff spot with their finger nails, as a veritable pack of hopefuls nip at their heels. That being said, no matter what happens the rest of the way there are a number of positives that will come out of the 2016 campaign and can be applied to the future.

The Cubs have clinched the Division. After being swept out of the playoffs last year, they have the NL’s best record and with their star former Tampa Bay manager leading the way, this seems like this is THE YEAR! Am I talking about 2016 or 2008?

Washington Nationals: 2016 Could’ve Been Different if the Winter Went How They Expected

With less than three weeks to go in the regular season, the Washington Nationals are all but assured their third National League East title since 2012. One has to wonder how this year would’ve gone if the offseason went as planned for general manager Mike Rizzo and his front office, though.

Rizzo made an appearance on ESPN’s Baseball Tonight podcast with Buster Olney earlier this week to talk about his club in advance of October. No conversation in 2016 about the Nats is complete without singing the praises of two influential people: manager Dusty Baker and second baseman Daniel Murphy.

They have truly been difference makers for this club, who owns a 87-59 record as they travel to face the Atlanta Braves this weekend. Rizzo didn’t hide how he felt about their contributions this year, referring to Baker as the NL Manager of the Year and Murphy as the NL MVP.

Even if they don’t take home hardware come November, it’s hard to fault Rizzo for feeling this way. It’s just ironic because neither of them were Washington’s first choice when it came to filling their jobs last winter.

A Letter To Vin Scully

Dear Vin Scully,

Congratulations on your upcoming retirement. You are the greatest. Your voice, your stories, your knowledge and love of the game is unmatched by anyone in the history of baseball.

I didn’t grow up a Dodgers fan, but yet I still loved listening to you. Never before had I heard someone know so much about every player, including the guy at the end of the bench on the visiting team.  You connected fans to the game and the players in a way that I didn’t think was possible.

Vin Scully’s Final Game Is Coming

By Josh:

Yesterday Vin Scully officially announced that his final game calling baseball will be October 2nd. Even if the Dodgers make the playoffs he is not going to call any of those games.  I have to be honest this makes me pretty sad and honestly as I sit here trying to figure out what to write my thoughts are so scattered because of what Vin’s retirement means for fans and for baseball.

Ivan Nova: The Latest Pirates’ Prosperous Project

Ivan Nova’s trade to the Pittsburgh Pirates at this year’s deadline failed to attract many headlines among the deluge of significant deals completed on the 1st of August. Yet Nova’s performances since arriving in Pittsburgh have brought an under the radar trade firmly into the spotlight. Whilst the Pirates’ playoffs hopes look to have been muted, sitting 6 games back of the 2nd NL wildcard spot, Nova’s performances lend hope to a possible revival of fortunes in 2017. In 7 starts in a Pirates uniform Nova has posted an impressive 5-0 record with a 3.00 ERA, 3.02 FIP and average gamescore (v2) of 62.

Compare that to Nova’s first half of the season in New York as a starter (Nova made 6 relief appearances between April 6th and May 1st) and the apparent improvement since the trade is drastic:

Starts Wins ERA FIP GSv2 BABIP HR/FB
Yankees 15 6 5.15 5.54 46 .294 22.60%
Pirates 7 5 3.00 3.02 62 .274 10.61%

During the second half of the season Nova ranks 14th in the Majors in ERA, 42nd in FIP and 40th in WAR, trailing only Jameson Taillon for the Pirates in the last two categories.

Accepting the Qualifying Offer Hasn’t Gone as Planned for These 3 MLB Players

When the qualifying offer system was developed for MLB free agents, it was supposed to help players, but it’s done just the opposite. After first being put into play for the 2012 offseason, we didn’t even see a pending free agent accept one until last winter.

One would imagine the thought process for Matt Wieters, Brett Anderson and Colby Rasmus to break that cycle was rather simple: Get a guaranteed payday in the short-term while using another solid season to land a multi-year deal the following winter. Given each of their situations, this made sense.

But sometimes, the best-laid plans don’t work out. That’s what’s happened to these three players with the regular season’s final month upon us, forcing them to face free agency once again.

Eddie Gaedel: His Meteoric Rise and Tragically Mysterious End

He died too young, passing away at a young age with enormous untapped potential. When he was found in his mother’s house, unresponsive from a beating suffered during a mugging and a subsequent heart attack, he had just turned 36. Despite having had a career in show business, and even a brief stint as a major league baseball player, he never found the comfort or respect most would expect from such opportunities. Insecurity, alcohol and always feeling on the outside all contributed to his lot in life leading up to his final days. As it turned out, Eddie Gaedel wound up being as overlooked in death as he was in his much too brief life.

P- Adam Wainwright (vs. Milwaukee Brewers): $8,100. It looks like Wainwright has finally snapped out of his funk. Over his last three starts, he has a 1-1 record, 3.71 ERA, and 15 strikeouts in 17 innings pitched. That includes a start against Milwaukee where he went seven innings, giving up only three hits, seven strikeouts, and one earned run. 7 MLB Rookies Who Have Unexpectedly Become X-Factors For Their Teams in 2016

For a Major League Baseball team to experience success, it’s necessary to receive contributions from all 25 men on the active roster. However, because of injuries, lack of production or a combination of the two, it normally takes even more than that to reach the postseason and contend for a World Series title.

That’s why those under-the-radar signings in the winter are so important. You know what else is important? The contributions from rookies, who began their season in the minor leagues, but are ready and able to make a significant impact at the big-league level.

The following seven rookies are in the future plans for their respective organizations, but may have not been expected to do a whole lot in 2016 after starting the year in the minors. Upon getting promoted, they’ve done one of two things:

  1. Fortify the roster for an expected playoff run in October.
  2. Help those far-fetched dreams of reaching the postseason not seem so crazy.

Daily Fantasy MLB DFS Picks For DraftKings 9/8/16

P- Ivan Nova (vs. Cincinatti Reds): $9,800. Over his last three starts, Nova has a 2-0 record, 1.71 ERA, and 16 strikeouts in 21 innings pitched. He has been absolutely dominant since joining the Pirates at the trade deadline. In six starts in the Pirates rotation, he is 4-0 with a 2.89 ERA. The Reds offense is average at best, so hopefully Nova can take care of business at his home field on Thursday.

P- Trevor Bauer (vs. Houston Astros): $7,900. Considering there is only seven match-ups on Thursday, there were some very slim pickings for starting pitching. The Houston Astros offense can be dangerous, but Bauer has done a great job against them in his career. In 51 career at bats against Bauer, the Astros are batting .137, with a .226 OBP, and 21 strikeouts.
