By Josh Robbins (Special Guest Writer And Co – Creator for The Factor12 Rating Pitching Metric.)

The Factor 12 (F12) is an analytic measurement utilizing league average performance to compare the value of all MLB pitchers on 60ft6in.com.

“Bill James has a pitcher stat called game score. So, I renamed my stat, “My Favorite Game.”

What is My Favorite Game?

Baseball fans often rekindle memories of their favorite games using anecdotal stories.  The accounts are often muddled by faint and inaccurate details lost over time.

My Favorite Game is intended to provide an unbiased statistical analysis using a points-based system to properly assign a value to every MLB game attended.

Here’s the breakdown of each event:

Lots of baseball fans keep score at games while attending. As such, have a lot of information about the teams, dates, ballparks and special occurrences they may have witnessed live. Giving a unique way to look at the totals gives you some historical significance of how unique certain games have been

Start with 9 points (GAME OF 9): 9 innings/9 players

Add .10 for each HR
Add .30 for each Grand Slam
Add .10 for each extra IP
Add .15 for each walk-off win
Add .60 for each walk-off HR
Add .20 for each CG/.50 SHO
Add .30 for each SP 10+K game
Subtract .20 pts for each SP(s) failing to pitch 5 IP
Add 1pts Cycle
Add 2pts No-Hitter
Add 3pts Perfect Game
Add 4pts 4-HR game
Add 5pts Unassisted Triple Play
Add 3pts 300W/4000K/500HR/3000H/MLB First
Add 3pts MLB Historical First
Add 1 pt 2000H/300HR/400HR/MLB Record Tied
Add 1pt 3-HR game/10+RBI game
Add 4 pts WS Clincher/2 WSG
Add 2 pts LCS Clincher/1 LCSG
Add 1 pt LDS Clincher/.5 LDSG
Add .25 pt ASG/WBC
Add 1 pt for each team scoring 20 runs
Add .1 pt for each lead change (LC)
Subtract .1 pt for each game deciding run (ex .1*2 if 2 run game)

Example

Utilizing My Favorite Game, let’s test out the method using my highest scoring regular season game.  The New York Yankees vs. Oakland Athletics on August 25, 2011.  In general, a 22 – 9 game should not provide any drama but this game had everything.

7 HR (multiply by .1)

3 Grand Slams (multiply by .3)

Both SP failed to throw 5 IP (multiply by .2)

Historic Milestone (3pts=3 GS first time ever by one team)

Add 1 pt (20+ runs scored)

3 lead changes (multiply by .1)

Subtract 13-run deficit (multiply by .1)

13.20 represent the highest total of the 265 MLB games attended in my life.  With all the home runs, historic grand slams, and lead changes provided this 22-9 game with more drama than most blowouts of this magnitude.

The next time you attend an MLB game, review the box score and figure out exactly what you witnessed.

My journey included 4 doubleheader attempts (LAA - SD), (NYY - NYM). (PHI - WSH) and (CHC - MIL) to conclude my 30 park journey in 26 days. Ironically again, Chuck Booth was in attendance for his 1st 30 park tour for that very doubleheader attempt at Wrigley Field and Miller Park.

A huge thanks goes out to our Guest Writer/Land Record Holder Of Fastest 30 MLB Parks Ever (2008) – Josh Robbins.
