What MLB Park Will Be The Next To Host A WrestleMania?

Wednesday, October.31/2012

Wrestlemania 18 (At SkyDome) was Hulk Hogan vs ‘The Rock.’ Hogan was his heel face character  ‘Hollywood’ Hogan from his NWO days in the WCW for the event. The fans of Toronto gave the Hulkster several standing ovations for his entrance and as well for the Match. He was the most popular wrestler in Canada that day. While he lost to Dwayne Johnson in one of his best contests of his career, this match gave the WWE the idea to turn him Baby Face Again. The next week “Hulkamania” was reborn with Red and Yellow.

Chuck Booth (Lead Baseball Writer):

I have previously mentioned that baseball and wrestling was my entire life as a young kid in the 80’s.  To me, nothing was bigger than the World Series every fall or WrestleMania every spring.  In 1990, the city of Toronto hosted WrestleMania 6 at the (NEWEST) ballpark in the MLB,  “The SkyDome.”  Back in the day, the building was considered state of the art.  I mean they were the 1st park to carry McDonalds as a fast food joint for a concession, they had luxury suite hotel rooms (in which some people forgot to draw the curtains to in heats of passion) and everything was big league.  So when almost 68000 fans packed into SkyDome to watch the 1st ever WrestleMania in Canada (and also an MLB Park), it was an un-believeable atmosphere.

Now I lived in Calgary at the time, yet I had seen my first MLB Game in 1989 at the SKYDOME.  I would have loved to have been in that audience.  I watched the events transpire from CCTV (Closed Circuit Television) in a big Restaurant in Calgary.  (Yes people, there used to be no black box that you would be able to buy ALL PPV events on.)

Hulk Hogan was bigger than life to kids, and was winding down his 1st stint with the WWE.  He really only fought 4-5 times a year anyways as he mixed time between doing movies in Hollywood.  WrestleMania was gathering massive steam in the media for their PPV buys and was their biggest draw of the year.  Hogan lost his 1st match in 6 WrestleMania’s in this event’s final match against the Ultimate Warrior.  It was an incredible Spectacle to watch a Wrestling event live from a Baseball Park that I had been to in person.  Sadly, the WWE would not return to a MLB Park until 2001.

It wasn’t even a current MLB Park as the Houston “Astrodome” was not the home field of the Houston Astros anymore in March of 2001.  It had all of the feelings of a Major League Ball Park.  WrestleMania 17 was the height of the current ratings ERA for the WWE.  Stone Cold Steve Austin and ‘The Rock” ruled the world of the squared ring. It was before the company would take major publicity hits on numerous ex-wrestler and current wrestler deaths.  It was shortly before all of the mainstream media caught wind of all of the rampant steroid and overusing of the wrestlers by the company.   It was considered the “Attitude ERA.”

Vince McMahon was front and center for all of the story-lines.  I love it how this owner fought for his company with his own blood, sweat and tears.  Just to be fair, WWE has instituted their own drug policies and have been suspending, firing and admonishing wrestlers for a long time now.  They have also receded the amount of matches a wrestler will have.  They have taken away the hardcore division and have lessened the high-risk injury maneuvers in order to help the welfare of the all of their employees.  Not enough is being said to commend this company for that because you still hear some horror stories from older wrestlers.

The Astrodome was home to WrestleMania 17. It was the first time in 11 years that the WWE had been back to an MLB Park.

The Iron Sheik:  WWE Legend Speaks with MLB reports in the Interview of a Lifetime

In 2002, the NWO invaded the WWE as the poison that Vince McMahon wanted to inflict on his own company brand.  It was the first time ever that Hulk Hogan was a heel in his wrestling company.  Hogan had been in the WCW for almost a decade and had been the central character that helped the Ted Turner Company actually surpass the giants WWE for ratings.  In what was an incredible turn of events at SKYDOME, Hulk Hogan received the biggest heroes welcome by the Toronto fans.  Hogan was supposed to be the bad guy in his storyline character that was facing ‘The Rock”, however he was the one the crowd loved more.  The man wrestled the match of his life.  Hogan would forever credit the Canadian building as a place where he went back to his roots.  Just like in the Cover picture to this article said, it was the re-birth of ‘Hulkamania.’

In 2003, it was the 3rd straight year that the WWE held and event in a MLB Park that was former or current.  This time the location was Safeco Field in Seattle Washington.  It was a brilliant move by the WWE to go these venues.  It was the last time any wrestling fan would see Stone Cold Steve Austin in action versus ‘The Rock.”  It was another huge success.  It would be another 9 years before the company would return to a baseball park.

The Latest MLB Park to host a WrestleMania was this past year in Sun Life Stadium.  I have a confession to make, I watched this exact event for the first time in 3 years.  The Rock made a triumphant return to the ring and it was the first time that an open-aired baseball venue was used for the event.  Yes the Marlins now play at their new park downtown, but much like when the ‘Astrodome’ was used for WrestleMania 17, a former baseball park had been used once again.

Sun Life Stadium was host to WrestleMania 28, after this year, what ex or current MLB Park will be used next for another WrestleMania?

Much like the Winter Classic in the NHL, that has been held at historical venues such as Wrigley Field and Fenway Park, whatever MLB Park that the WWE picks would ultimately sellout.  You have to factor in the weather though.  So you must look at the Dome Parks first.  Miller Park, Minute Maid Park and Chase Field would have to be on the companies radar.  A return to Miami is not likely for awhile.  I would think that Tropicana Field would also not be a suitable venue.  Safeco Field and The SkyDome are always possibilities as well.  Some of the better weather venues would not be ideal, like Dodger Stadium, Angel Stadium and The Ball Park In Arlington (particularly since the Cowboys Stadium would hold over 100,000 people in capacity and break the ALL-Time Record for WrestleMania.)  Whenever they do go back to use an MLB Park for WrestleMania, I will definitely take a road trip to see it.

Miller Park would be my #1 choice to see a WrestleMania go to next. It is perfectly located in Central USA and has lots of cheap travel opportunities to arrive in Milwaukee. #2 Choice would be Chase Field and my 3rd would be Minute Maid Park. Weather plays a big factor as the event is always held at the End of March or very early April.

About chuckbooth3023

I played competitive baseball until 18 years old and had offers to play NCAA Division 1 University Baseball at Liberty University. Post-concussion symptoms from previous football and baseball head injuries forced me to retire by age 19. After two nearly made World Record Attempts in 2008, I set a New World Record by visiting all 30 MLB Parks (from 1st to last pitch) in only 24 Calendar Days in the summer 0f 2009. In April of 2012, I established yet another new GWR by visiting all 30 Parks in only 23 Calendar Days! You can see the full schedule at the page of the www.mlbreports.com/gwr-tracker . In 2015, I watched 224 MLB Games, spanning all 30 MLB Parks in 183 Days. Read about that World Record Journey at https://mlbreports.com/183in2015/229sked2015/
