Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (July.22nd) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

Andrew McCutchen homered in the first and in the third, driving in 4 of the Pirates 6 runs as they snuck past reeling Washington, 6-5.
Dillon Gee held the division leading Braves hitless into the 7th inning and pitched 2 hit shutout ball over 7. The bullpen betrayed him as he got a no decision in the Mets 2-1 loss.
J. J. Hardy went 3-5 with a homer, 3 RBI and a pair of runs scored as the Orioles clobbered Kansas City, 9-2.
Matt Moore pitched a complete game 2 hit shutout in Fenway Park to pull Tampa Bay within 1/2 a game of Boston, 3-0.
They all owned baseball on July 22nd, 2013.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (July.21st) – Updated Yearly ‘WOB’ Standings

Mike Napoli put his thumbprint on the Red Sox – Yankees rivalry with a pair of homers including a walk off shot in the 11th inning that sent the Fenway Faithful home happy, 8-7.
Matt Kemp returned to the Dodger lineup and helped complete the sweep of the Nationals by falling a triple short of the cycle. He drove in 3 runs as LA won 9-2.
Bartolo Colon pitched a complete game 4 hit shutout, helping the A’s avoid a sweep of the Angels with a 6-0 triumph.
And in a day where each Cy Young front runner pitched well, Matt Harvey shone brightest. He pitched 7 innings of 3 hit shutout ball, striking out 10 and walking none. He got the win as the Mets topped Philadelphia, 5-0.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (July16th) – Updated Yearly “WOB” Standings

It is an ALL STAR GAME edition of Who Owned Baseball!
MVP Mariano Rivera pitched a perfect inning and had the entire stage to himself, giving the All Star Game its lasting memory for the night.
Prince Fielder legged out a triple in the 9th inning that delighted the crowd and probably gave his manager a heart attack.
Matt Harvey started the game and let the first two runners on. Then he bore down and retired the next 6 All Stars he faced.
And Paul Goldschmidt hit the National League’s lone extra base hit that gave the senior circuit some life in the 9th inning.
They all owned the All Star Game last night.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (July.9th) – Updated Yearly “WOB” Standings

Alex Rios tied an American League record with six hits in a 9 inning game, the first 5 against Justin Verlander. Rios also stole a pair of bases and sparked the game winning 8th inning rally as White Sox clubbed their way to an 11-4 win.
James Shields pitched well over 7 innings, giving up only 1 run and 5 hits, winning the game 3-1 for the Royals over the Yankees.
Marlon Byrd broke open a tense, back and forth game against the Giants by blasting an 8th inning grand slam. The Mets prevailed, 10-6.
Wily Peralta threw a complete game shutout against the mighty Cincinnati Reds. He held the defending division champs to 3 hits as the Brewers won a close game, 2-0.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (July 7th) – Updated Yearly “WOB” Standings

Adam Jones hit a two run 9th inning home run off of Mariano Rivera to give the Orioles a stunning 2-1 victory and avoid the sweep in the Bronx.
David Price went the distance, letting up only 1 run and walking none, getting the win and completing the Rays three game sweep of the White Sox.
Clayton Kershaw was brilliant over 8 innings, giving up only 3 hits, 1 walk and 1 run. He dominated the Giants and ,won a tense game for the Dodgers, 4-1.
Josh Satin scored the first run and drove in the other. The first baseman provided almost all the offense for New York, going 3-4 and leading the Mets to a 2-1 win in Milwaukee.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (July 5th) – Updated Yearly “WOB” Standings

Francisco Liriano pitched the first complete game for the Pirates this season, letting up only 4 hits and 2 runs. He drove in a run for good measure, leading the best team in baseball to a 6-2 victory over the Cubs.
Kirk Nieuwenhuis reached base 6 times, coming around to score 3 times and driving in 5 runs in the process. He was a homer shy of the Cycle while propelling the Mets to a 12-5 drubbing of Milwaukee.
Ivan Nova went the distance for the Yankees, giving up only 3 hits and 1 walk while striking out 11. He benefitted from a 9th inning walk off rally to get the decision in the 3-2 triumph over Baltimore.
Jose Bautista homered in the third and smacked an RBI single in the fourth, giving the Blue Jays more than enough offense to defeat the Twins 4-0.

The Most Recent No Hitter For Each Franchise

Last season had a flurry of no hitters, ending with Homer Bailey‘s gem that eliminated the Pirates from contention.
This season has been filled with one near miss after another, including close calls from Yu Darvish and Anibal Sanchez. When would the first no hitter of 2013 be thrown?
I guess only Homer Bailey is allowed to throw no-nos now. He threw a gem with only one walk against the punchless Giants and joined the likes of Roy Halladay and Mark Buehrle as a pitcher with multiple no hitters.
Let’s take a look at each franchise’s most recent no hitter:

Miguel Cabrera was a triple short of the Cycle. He went 4-4 with a single, a double and a pair of homers. He drove in three and scored three as the Tigers beat the Rays, 6-3.
Delmon Young went 3-6 with a double and six runs batted in, leading the Phillies to a 16-1 embarrassment of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Bartolo Colon threw 8 innings of 1 run, 6 hit ball as the A’s beat the Mighty Cardinals handily, 6-1.
And Matt Harvey may have been ripped off by the Mets bullpen, but he was sensational. He threw perfect game into the 5th inning. He finished the game letting up just 3 hits, 1 run and no walks in 7 innings, striking out 11 along the way. The Mets relievers surrendered the lead and ultimately the game to the Nationals, 6-4. That doesn’t make Harvey’s start any less noteworthy.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (June 27th) – Updated Yearly “WOB” Standings

Derek Holland pitched a complete game 2 hit shutout in the Bronx as the Rangers snuck past the Yankees, 2-0.
Mike Trout collected 4 hits, including one in the game winning 10th inning rally, as the Angels came from behind to beat the Tigers 3-1.
Marlon Byrd hit a 2 run homer in the 8th inning that turned a 2-1 hole into a 3-2 Mets win over the Rockies. Byrd threw out Michael Cuddyer trying to stretch out a single in the 9th inning.
And Patrick Corbin did not get the decision, but he was strong over 7 innings, letting up only 2 runs, helping the Diamondbacks set up a 3-2 victory over the Nationals in Washington.
They all owned baseball on June 27th, 2013.

Who Owned Baseball Yesterday (June 23rd) – Updated Yearly “WOB” Standings

Matt Harvey’s shutout masterpiece was cut short after only 72 pitches because of a rain delay. But that doesn’t short change his six shutout innings with only 2 hits, 1 walk and 6 strikeouts, leading the Mets to an 8-0 win over the Phillies.
Justin Ruggiano homered in the first and in the ninth, driving in 3 of the Marlins 7 runs as Miami won the series against the Giants by a final score of 7-2.
Edwin Encarnacion went 3-5 with a homer and four runs batted in including a two run shot in the second inning as the Blue Jays clobbered the Orioles 13-5.
Joe Blanton pitched and unexpectedly wonderful game, letting up only one earned run in 7 1/3 innings against the Pirates. Unfortunately the Angels bullpen collapsed and Pittsburg prevailed 10-9 in 10 innings.They all owned baseball on June 23rd, 2013.

Dillon Gee was brilliant pitching 8 1/3 innings after a rain delay and before a double header. His bid for a shutout was cruely ended by Freddie Freeman‘s 2 strike, 2 run walk off homer. But that does not diminish his brilliant effort.
Giancarlo Stanton had 2 of the Marlins 3 hits and drove in all three runs with a pair of homers. One was in the 9th inning and broke the tie as the Marlins beat the Diamondbacks 3-2.
Josh Johnson may not have received a decision, but his 7 1/3 innings of shutout ball with 10 strikeouts against 2 walks helped set up the Blue Jays 2-0 win over the Rockies.

Kirk Nieuwenhuis launched a 3 run, bottom of the ninth, come from behind walk off home run to cap off a 4 run rally as the Mets stunned the Cubs, 4-3.
Ricky Nolasco pitched 7 innings letting up 3 hits and 1 run as the Marlins beat the Cardinals 7-3 and the worst team in baseball won a series against the best team in the game.
Josh Reddick was a double short of the cycle as he went 4-5 with a homer and a triple, driving in two, leading the A’s to a 10-2 blow out of the Mariners.
And Corey Kluber pitched 8 innings of shutout ball, striking out 8 and walking none, getting the 2-0 win for the Indians over the Nationals.
They all owned baseball on June 16th, 2013.

If all goes well with the team this year, the Astros could improve on their 2012 year. If all else fails, Houston might challenge the ALL-Time Loss Record. Whatever happens, any Veteran Player with a heartbeat will be on the trading block by June. The Astros will continue to dissolve any of their assets (with expiring contracts) onto other teams in order to pick off some more prospects. The Astros will also Draft 1st overall at the 2013 MLB Amateur Draft. The Astros also play in the toughest Division in the Majors for pitching, plus have already put up back to back 100 Loss Seasons. Their second half Won – Loss Records might challenge historic rates.

Likely Mid season trade targets NL:
I’m assuming these teams will have a winning percentage of at least .475 and therefore will not be sellers although that doesn’t entirely rule out being sellers at the deadline. We are far away from the deadline but it’s nice to see who might be available. Nationals, Braves, Phillies, Reds, Cardinals, Brewers, Diamondbacks, Dodgers, Giants and Rockies (sleeper).
I believe these teams will be sellers and there are not many in the NL because of the parity. Many of these teams don’t have that much to offer so it would not surprise me if a team above (Brewers?) makes a few trades for over slot prices. Marlins, Mets, Pirates, Cubs and Padres.

Josh Thole, Travis d’Arnaud and the Mets Catcher Situation

After Josh Thole’s promising year in 2010, it seemed almost as if Thole was a long-term solution for the New York Mets at catcher. However, over the last three years, Thole has become less and less productive at the plate. In just one day, New York made a statement proving that they no longer believe Josh Thole can be the kind of player he was when he first arrived in the majors. The Mets made a gigantic trade with Toronto yesterday, which will send out Thole and bring in Travis d’Arnaud, one of the finest catching prospects in the game. Thole’s future in New York is over, while d’Arnaud’s is just beginning.
After being selected in the 13th round of the 2005 Amateur Draft, Thole spent five seasons in the minors. While moving up through the minor league ranks, Thole never dominated any level but he hit for average and played solid defense pretty much everywhere he went. Years later, Thole’s value is practically centered around his ability to hit for average and play average defense behind the plate. Read the rest of this entry
Zack Wheeler and Matt Harvey are Signs of Hope in New York

Sam Evans: It has been over a decade since the New York Mets ranked in the top five in the majors in Fielding Independent Pitching. Last year, the Mets had roughly league-average production from their pitching staff and it led to a 74-88 finish. With Citi Field being a pitcher’s park, the Mets are going to need a lot more from their pitching staff in order to be a successful ballclub. Luckily, New York is breeding two very talented young pitchers, both of whom could start for the Mets next season. Zack Wheeler and Matt Harvey should provide hope and confidence to the Mets and their fans.
Zack Wheeler is a twenty-two year old right-handed starting pitcher who has yet to pitch in the majors. Wheeler was drafted out of a Georgia high school in the 2009 MLB Amateur draft by the San Francisco Giants. Standing 6’4’’, Wheeler throws a fastball that can reach up to 95 MPH. His arsenal also includes a plus curveball, a changeup and a cutter. Wheeler came over from the Giants organization in the Carlos Beltran trade after one and a half years in the lower minors. Tyler Austin – Yankees Prospect: A Baseball Story of Courage; Feature Interview by Lori Martini

Lori Martini (Baseball Writer- and @LoriMartini on Twitter): Baseball is my life. Heck, if I could get paid for playing softball- I would have the greatest, happiest job in the world! I’m sure anyone who has played the game feels the same way. So many players go through the system and either get overlooked, marred by injuries or simply can’t perform up to major league standards. Aside from all of that, there are the politics and life in general that can get in the way of success.
So when we see athletes like Lance Armstrong and Mike Lowell, not only overcoming testicular cancer, but rising to the top of their respective sport, one cannot help but feel completely inspired. These guys did NOT give up and in fact, they fought harder than anyone. Given the success they have experienced, the hard work certainly paid off. Which brings me to a very special ballplayer and today’s feature subject, Tyler Austin.
Tyler was born in Macon, GA to Kim and Chris Austin and has two younger brothers, Dylan and Kyle who also play ball. At age 17, Tyler was diagnosed with testicular cancer during the MLB Draft. Read the rest of this entry
