Daily Matchups for 4/27/2017
Pitchers To Target:

Noah Syndergaard- After having his start moved from Weds to Thurs, he still makes the top play on the day against a Braves’ team that he has had success against in the past. Thor is coming off a great performance against the Phillies (7 IP, 5 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 10 Ks and 114 pitches.) With that amount of pitches it would appear that his fingernail/blister issue is behind him. Hopefully the Mets’ offense can give him the run support that will allow him to get his 2nd win of the season.
Career vs Current Braves Roster
AVG: 0.279 [19 for 68], BABIP: 0.360, K%: 25.0, BB%: 6.6
FIP: 2.58 Strikeout: 19 Single: 16Groundout: 12 Flyout: 8 Walk: 5Pop Out: 4 Lineout: 4 Forceout: 2Sac Fly: 2 Triple: 1 Double: 1 Hit By Pitch: 1 Home Run: 1

Justin Verlander- This could be a very iffy pick but if it plays out you’ll be ahead of the pack. People might take a look at see that Verlander is 1-2 with a 6.04 ERA but he’s got a great match-up against a Mariners team that is in last place and has had trouble to score runs this season. He makes a great SP2 or a GPP pitcher.
Career vs Current Mariners Roster
AVG: 0.245 [37 for 151], BABIP: 0.290, K%: 24.1, BB%: 7.2
FIP: 4.09 Strikeout: 40 Flyout: 29Groundout: 20 Single: 20 Walk: 12Pop Out: 9 Double: 9 Lineout: 8Home Run: 6 Forceout: 2Grounded Into DP: 2 Triple: 2 Field Error: 2 Fielders Choice Out: 1 Sac Bunt: 1 Hit By Pitch: 1 Sac Fly: 1Bunt Pop Out: 1

Corey Kluber- Kluber is coming off back to back wins against the White Sox and the Tigers. In his last start he pitched 9 innings, gave up only 3 hits and struck out 9 while inducing 11 ground balls. In his start against the Tigers he actually gave up 6 runs but still got the win. His ERA is sitting at 4.28 but he should be good to go against an Astros team that he has had success against in the past.
Career vs Current Astros Roster
AVG: 0.206 [20 for 97], BABIP: 0.265, K%: 26.5, BB%: 4.9
FIP: 2.68 Strikeout: 27 Groundout:23 Single: 12 Flyout: 12 Walk: 5Double: 5 Pop Out: 5 Lineout: 5Forceout: 3 Home Run: 2Grounded Into DP: 2 Triple: 1

Most Recent Cycle Hit For Each MLB Franchise (Updated For Trea Turner, April 25, 2017 )

Matthew Stockman/Getty Images
Another day, another cycle hit at Coors!
OK, maybe Coors is designed for having guys hit for the Cycle. That isn’t to take away from Trea Turner’s remarkable 7 RBI night for the Nationals. It just seems like they come in bunches at Coors where the thin air allows more homers and the big dimensions to keep balls in the yard lead to triples.
Ah well, why rain on Trea’s parade?
Here is the list, updated for today’s action!

This Isn’t The Kind of Performance Kevin Gausman Had in Mind
Fresh off having one of the more disappointing starting rotations in baseball last year, the Baltimore Orioles didn’t do much to change this group in 2017.
Instead, they were hoping their young hurlers would take another step forward to lead the unit as a whole. That included Kevin Gausman, who parlayed a strong second half and impressive performance during Spring Training into an Opening Day start against the Toronto Blue Jays.
The thing is, his strong showing after the 2016 All-Star break hasn’t exactly carried over into this year.
Through 24 innings of work (five starts), the right-hander has posted a 1-2 record with an unsightly 7.50 ERA and 2.04 WHIP. Those looking for some solace in his peripheral numbers won’t find it, with a FIP (5.65), xFIP (5.51) and SIERA (5.39) all north of 5.00.
The Orioles need him to pitch like an ace this year, but he’s done the complete opposite. What’s going on?
Top Prospects Of The Day: Christian Arroyo Called Up To The San Francisco Giants
For different reasons than you’re typically used to seeing on here, Christian Arroyo has just made the list! Off to a blistering start this season – unlike his parent club – Arroyo has slashed .446/.478/.692 in 65 Triple-A at-bats this year despite being just 21-years old in the class. His promotion to San Francisco is likely to be nothing more than a first taste, filling the role of shortstop while regular Brandon Crawford is added to the bereavement list, but it’s a tip of the hat to the type of start he’s gotten off to.
This season was Arroyo’s debut in Triple-A Sacramento and he’s certainly made the most of it. Even though he’s never walked much, he makes a ton of solid contact and might even be adding a greater element of power to his game, having already hit three this season despite never hitting more than nine in a single campaign.
Arroyo’s glove is pretty capable, too, but profiles more so as a fill-in shortstop but is totally going to be able to manage big-league time on the regular at second and even third.
On Twitter, Arroyo posted that his mom didn’t believe he was telling her the truth when he said he’d been promoted. Maybe a Tuesday night debut in San Francisco will provide the proof she needs.

Matt Davidson singled, doubled and homered, driving in 4 and scoring 2 in the White Sox 12-1 pounding of the Royals.
Matt Cain held the Dodgers to 2 hits over 6 shutout innings as the Giants took the 2-1 final over their rivals.
Miguel Gonzalez threw 8 innings of 2 hit shutout ball and earned the White Sox 12-1 decision over Kansas City.

Milwaukee Brewers Week in Review: April 18-23
The week in review: The Milwaukee Brewers wrapped up their road trip with two tough losses in Chicago. Last Thursday they came home to face the St. Louis Cardinals, and promptly won 7-5. The Cards won the next three games 6-3, 4-1, and 6-4. Going into Monday’s action, the Brewers are 9-11 in the NL Central, two games behind the front running Cubs.

This would have been my 6th selection, and I may still yet throw down $15 on this odds, with a 40/1 odd, and an early Adam Wainwright injury, this is good value.

Daily Matchups for 4/24/2017
Pitchers To Target:

Zack Greinke- It’s not too often lately that we would suggest using Greinke but I actually like this match-up against Jhoulys Chacin and the Padres. The only downfall here is it’s in Coors Jr. (Chase Field) instead of Petco Park. Greinke faced these same Padres in his last start and the results are pretty damn good. 8 IP, 5 H, 1 BB, 6 SO, 1 ER, 1 QSTART and 43 FP.
Career vs Current Padres Roster

Jason Vargas- I have absolutely no idea how Jason Vargas is doing what he is doing but he’s so far 3-0 with a .44 (!!!!) ERA and still only $8,500 on Fanduel. He’s had back to back amazing starts where he had 9 Ks, and 8 Ks to go along with 58 FP and 57 FP. He’s got a great match-up tonight against a very shaky White Sox offense and while although his numbers aren’t the very best against him, he’s been pitching way above his numbers. He’s gotta come back down to earth eventually but I’m not too sure that tonight is that night.

Prospects of the Day: Lamet K’s 13 in Impressive Outing
Thursday saw some impressive pitching outings from some prospects who are not that high on many lists. Pitchers such as Dinelson Lamet, Lucas Sims, and Nick Pivetta are all prospects who have not been talked about a ton, but pitched gems on Thursday. Baseball’s top prospect, Yoan Moncada, continued his hot start.
Dinelson Lamet
5.1 Innings Pitched- 13 strikeouts- 3 hits- 3 walks
Dinelson Lamet, one of the Padres’ top prospects, was dealing on Thursday night. Lamet started the night off strong, striking out 2 batters in each of the first 3 innings. He then upped his game and struck out the side in the 4th inning increasing his total to 9 strikeouts through 4 innings pitched. The beginning of the top of the 5th he found himself giving up a walk and a single to begin the inning, but quickly got out of trouble by striking out three in a row. Lamet would give up a home run to Gordon Beckham to begin the 5th inning and would be pulled in the 5th after a few more batters. All said and done, not too shabby of an outing for Lamet, tallying 13 strikeouts over only 5.1 innings pitched.
Other Top Prospects
Hot Starts: South Atlantic League Pitchers
The last article went over hot starts by South Atlantic League hitters, this one highlights the top pitchers over the first two weeks. This is by no means a definitive list and in no particular order, just a quick update on which prospects are starting off the season red hot.
South Atlantic League Pitchers
Luis Escobar
SP (PIT) – Age 20 – 16.2 IP, 14 H, 2 BB, 32 K, 3.24 ERA, 0.96 WHIP
A good way to get your name on this list is to rack up 32 K’s through your first 3 starts. Escobar was signed as a much smaller 16-year-old out of Colombia in 2013. His milb.com page lists him at 6-foot-1, 155 pounds which is laughable to anyone who’s seen him this year. While he’s not exactly Carlos Zambrano, he’s definitely filled in much closer to 200 lbs. With filling out his frame the power stuff has come strong. While he’s still learning how to harness a mid-90s fastball and power curve, minor league hitters are struggling mightily to catch up.
At just 20 years old and starting his first year of full-season baseball, staying healthy and consistent will be a huge key for Escobar. While it’s nice to see him put up these gaudy strikeout numbers, he needs to learn how to pitch for a night where he might not have his best stuff. At this point, he’s only walked 2 batters in 16.2 innings, but he’s been a bit wild at times and helped a bit by some overzealous swings. There is something to be said about a pitcher who generates a lot of swings and misses while still being out of the zone, though I’m not sure how much of it is intentional with him.

We Should Just Expect a Strong Start From Bryce Harper Every Year
There are only three things guaranteed in life: death, taxes and Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper having a huge April.
That’s how the saying goes, right? It’s something like that.
Every ballplayer is wired differently, and that’s usually apparent when looking at how they perform. Some are notorious for getting off to a slow start, while others immediately put the pedal to the floor. Harper has only been in the big leagues since debuting as a 19-year-old in 2012, but he’s already built a reputation on being a fast starter.
Whether it’s his propensity for hitting homers on Opening Day or producing some of the most dominant April performances this decade, it seems like he’s always a top performer in the season’s first month of play.
And that’s pretty much what the statistics say. In fact, there’s no better month of the year for Harper than April.

Stephen Strasburg struck out 10 Braves in 7 innings, walking 2 and allowing only 2 runs, earning the 3-2 decision for the Nationals.

Sully Baseball Podcast – Talking Braves stadium and Angels team that should have won – April 20, 2017

Scott Cunningham
One of my most devoted listeners asked me a question.
@sullybaseball thoughts on the new braves stadium?
— Christopher a austin (@Christopheraau2) April 17, 2017
The Braves new stadium seems nice but kind of what they already had. Meanwhile I discuss the Angels team that should have won.

Will Jordan Zimmermann’s Contract Be One Of The Worst In History?
After Jordan Zimmermann’s shaky outing last night, and it is still too early to tell, but I’m starting to get concerned that Zim’s contract may be one of the worst in baseball history.
Entering his second year of a 5-year $110MM contract and making $18MM this year ($24MM in ’18, $25MM in ’19 & ’20), it’s safe to say that the season isn’t getting off to Jordan’s liking after an injury filled 2016 campaign. After the Tigers offense saved Zimmermann from taking the loss last night (ultimately coughing the game up), he still had his second poor performance in as many outings, giving up 5 earned on 10 hits to the Rays. This follows up a 4.2 inning outing against Minnesota where he also game up 5 earned on hits and 5 walks. The start of the season against Boston gave plenty of hope to fans, but remember, that was against a flu-ridden Red Sox lineup. Through the three starts, Zimmermann has a 5.94 ERA, has given up 18 hits in 16.2 innings, while walking 7, and striking out 10, and has a -0.3 WAR.

Chadd Cady / San Diego Union-Tribune
Jhoulys Chacin pitched 8 innings of 3 hit shutout ball, striking out 5 Arizona batters and getting the 1-0 win in San Diego.
Bryce Harper reached base 5 times, homered twice and drive in 5 to help the Nationals clobber Atlanta, 14-4.
Jason Vargas struck out 9 Giants in 7 innings, allowing 4 walks, no runs and 4 hits as the Royals finished the 2-0 shutout.
Mitch Haniger got on 4 times, scored 3 times and drove in 4 as Seattle beat Miami, 10-5.

Daily Matchups for 4/20/2017
Pitchers To Target:

Chris Sale- Sale has really been the Redsox only good starting pitching this season. He gets a juicy match-up against a struggling last place Blue Jays team. He’s even had a lot of success against a once-potent offense.
Career vs Current Blue Jays Roster
AVG: 0.168 [17 for 101], BABIP: 0.187, K%: 20.9, BB%: 8.2
FIP: 3.91 Flyout: 23Strikeout: 23 Groundout: 18Single: 11 Pop Out: 10 Walk:9 Lineout: 5 Grounded Into DP: 3 Home Run: 3 Double: 3Double Play: 1 Forceout: 1

Noah Syndergaard- Can we please get through one start where he doesn’t leave with a blister? He’s got a tremendous match-up against a Phillies team that he has dominated in his career but it will hinge on his finger apparently. Let’s pray for the best!
Career vs Current Phillies Roster
AVG: 0.175 [10 for 57], BABIP: 0.216, K%: 30.0, BB%: 5.0
FIP: 3.13 Strikeout: 18Groundout: 10 Single: 7Flyout: 6 Lineout: 5 Pop Out:3 Walk: 3 Grounded Into DP:2 Home Run: 2 Field Error: 1Double Play: 1 Forceout: 1Double: 1

James Paxton- If you’d ask me about how viable of an option Paxton would be during Spring Training I might have laughed in your face. But have you seen his success so far this season?! His last game against Texas he pitched 8 innings of 2 hit ball with 9 Ks, and previous start against the Astros he pitched 7 innings of 7 hit ball and 8 Ks.
Career vs Current Athletics Roster
AVG: 0.289 [11 for 38], BABIP: 0.300, K%: 16.3, BB%: 9.3
FIP: 5.87 Groundout: 8Single: 8 Strikeout: 7 Flyout:5 Lineout: 4 Walk: 4 Field Error: 2 Home Run: 2 Triple:1 Sac Fly: 1 Grounded Into DP: 1

Trevor Story Hasn’t Quite Recreated his April Magic From Last Season
Last April, Colorado Rockies shortstop Trevor Story made his presence felt in a big way as a rookie. It’s kind of hard not to when you hit seven home runs in your first 12 career games and tie a rookie record for the most dingers in April (10).
There’s really no way for anyone to replicate that performance (.261/.324/.696 line with 10 homers and 20 RBI, good for a 143 wRC+). Even if he mashed once again this month, coming into the season expecting that level of production — especially in the power department — would be entirely unfair.
However, Story has unfortunately seen the other end of the spectrum this year with regard to April performances. He already experienced what it’s like to be on fire, and now he’s realizing what it feels like to start completely ice cold.
That’s evidenced by his .125/.263/.313 triple slash with 2 homers and 3 RBI in 57 plate appearances. As frustrating as the first handful of games have likely been for him, his results on offense haven’t all been bad. Not a whole lot has been good, though.

Daily Matchups for 4/19/2017
Pitchers To Target:

Madison Bumgarner- MadBum gets a terrific match-up against an under-performing 4th place Royals and he’s absolutely dominated them in his career. If there’s one team that he will get his first win of the season against, it has to be the Royals. He’s had 37, 37 , and 49 FP his first 3 starts of the season and I fully expect him to top that in his start tonight.
Career vs Current Royals Roster
AVG: 0.170 [16 for 94], BABIP: 0.238, K%: 31.3, BB%: 3.0
FIP: 1.66 Strikeout: 31Groundout: 16 Lineout: 10Flyout: 10 Single: 9 Double: 6Pop Out: 6 Walk: 3 Field Error: 2 Grounded Into DP: 2Hit By Pitch: 1 Forceout: 1Sac Bunt: 1 Home Run: 1

Clayton Kershaw- He’s a stud but that means he will cost you a ton. He is coming off of an 8.1 IP, 4 H, 1 BB, 8 SO, 1 ER performance against the D-Backs where he ended up with 56 FP over on Fanduel. Two starts ago Kershaw faced the same Rockies and only got 24 FP but that game was in Coors so we won’t take much heed in those numbers.
Career vs Current Rockies Roster
AVG: 0.238 [58 for 244], BABIP: 0.307, K%: 27.4, BB%: 5.0
FIP: 3.01 Strikeout: 70Groundout: 54 Single: 38Flyout: 24 Lineout: 18 Walk:13 Double: 11 Pop Out: 11Home Run: 7 Forceout: 3Triple: 2 Hit By Pitch: 2Grounded Into DP: 2 Fielders Choice Out: 1 Bunt Groundout: 1 Field Error: 1Strikeout – DP: 1

Vincent Velasquez- He just faced this same Mets team in his last start and only lasted 5 innings, walking 4, struck out 7 and gave up 5 ERs for only 21 FP. We think he bounces back tonight as he’s still only given up 14 hits in 63 ABs. He makes a great GPP pitcher and SP2 tonight.
Career vs Current Mets Roster
AVG: 0.222 [14 for 63], BABIP: 0.289, K%: 32.9, BB%: 10.5
FIP: 4.01 Strikeout: 25Groundout: 10 Flyout: 10Single: 9 Walk: 8 Home Run:3 Pop Out: 3 Double: 2 Hit By Pitch: 2 Sac Fly: 2 Field Error:1 Sac Bunt: 1
