Mastering the 48 Hour Weekend/Week Long Road MLB Trips

For people that work a Monday to Friday job, and are looking to see 3 games for the price of 2 for a weekend,, this blog gives a quick lesson on how to do that.

The whole travel industry works on the 24 hour clock. This actually works to the MLB road trip world out there. During my year long trip, I mastered the art of the 24 hour clock.
My favorite move was to rent a car for Friday – Sunday, that would only cost two rental days at a car company. Most of the time it would include leaving for a Friday game at 5:30 – and the car was due at a 5:30 on Sunday.
This is great for jamming at least 3 games in the 48 hours, and sometimes you can do a doubleheader on the Saturday.
I told my buddy Scott of breaking down the cost of watching baseball games into individual innings – kind of like bowling frames.

Motel 6 and Super 8 motels used to be the best chains to check in early at 12 PM> for an entire day stay. Over the last year, my travel friends and I used a new to obtain that early check in. Simply state that it is your first visit to the city and or hotel chain, and put the onus on the concierge to make your stay pleasant. Most of the time it worked for an early check in.
Sure this meant Sunday games might not include time for extra innings. But this costs per innings is still the best objective.
The way to only stay in hotel for 3 times in a week is kind of the same maneuver. During one visit to a lodging facility, there is two days you are allowed to stay. Most places let you stay for 20 hours, and as much as the full 24 hours if you are able to check in early.
If you do this 3 times a week, and then follow your checkout day, with a travel day wedged in between, then you can save on staying at places.
If you do it properly, you can even go the whole week without missing a shower.
Monday – Lodging (shower in the afternoon)
Tuesday – checkout day, travel day to next city. (shower in the AM)
Wednesday – Lodging (shower in the afternoon)
Thursday – checkout day, travel day to next city. (shower in the AM)
Friday – Lodging (shower in the afternoon)
Saturday – Checkout day, travel to home base. (shower in the AM)
For end of road trips, always try to use a day baseball game to make your own getaway back home.
These suggestions are all based if the person (s) going to the park have never seen the venue before. Obviously if it is someone’s 1st visit, it is way better to arrive at the park as soon as possible.
This time frame is more for extreme ball park chasers.
With the 48 hour weekend, you may have to take a red-eye – or at least a late night flight to save money on fare savers.

I am happy to be back at the helm of the MLB Reports, after completing my record 224 Games in the MLB Trip in 2015. It was the 4th time I have seen all 30 MLB Parks since 2008.
During that time away I was fortunate to do 100 Media Interviews and be named the Baseball Blogger Alliance President.
